After an uneventful hotel dinner (tortellini), Ryan and I decided to head out to Mochi again to see if the place was still as slammed as it was last week when we went for some frozen yogurt.
Well… it was.
Mochi must be the watering hole of Ocala or something. I swear we walked in behind a flippin’ birthday party tonight.
We decided it was way too packed to wait, so we knocked some ice cream cones out of some little kid’s hands in anger (kidding!) and drove away, determined to find an alternative place to get some ice cream.
Eventually we stumbled upon Ariel’s Ice Cream and wandered inside.
Not one person in line! (Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing, now that I think about it.)
We decided to split a large bowl of cake batter ice cream.
The ice cream didn’t taste anything like cake batter (unlike the fabulous Ben & Jerry’s flavor), but it did taste fantastic. It was full of brownie pieces and had thick fudge ribbons throughout the sweet and creamy ice cream.
There’s nothing like a yummy bowl of ice cream to make you forget about a cruddy hotel buffet dinner!
Time to read The Glass Castle. I’m now halfway through the book and it’s improved a lot in the last hundred pages. (For those of you who have read it, they’re now living in Appalachia and are no longer in the boring dessert. Praise sweet baby Sadie!) I think I’m actually make it through the whole book!
Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health says
Glad your book is getting better! I just had some fro-yo with awesome mix ins. I think I may need to take a page out of your book though, and start saying “no” to more things. I’ve been indulging a little too much this summer haha
gabby says
I am in love with cake batter ice cream… it is the best of both worlds!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Ahahahaha froyo places are HOPPIN these days!! Cake batter is mah favvveee after moose tracks, and/or anything with pb cups 🙂 or oreos….geeze now I’m hungry!! Anywhooo I am proud of you for getting through some of the book ,it’s a slow one 😉
Brittany (healthy slice of life) says
Mmm ice cream sounds so yummy! I could totally go for some mint chocolate chip right now 🙂
Lily says
Yum! I was hoping maybe the place would be Little Mermaid themed b/c it’s called Ariel’s 😉
Alysha @ She's on the Run says
We read the Glass Castle in my book club and that was one book I was telling EVERYONE about – I loved it. If you like it too, check out her next book, Half Broke Horses.
sara @ the foodie diaries says
I love all of the book reviews you’re doing. I’m an avid reader and I love looking for new reading material 🙂 After you finish this book I recommend: The Da Vinci Code, The Lost Symbol, My Sisters Keeper and any book by James Patterson 🙂
FYI I couldn’t stop giggling at the Sadie email updates!! My mom used to send me video messages of my puppy Cole while I was away at college 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
I love alllll of Dan Brown’s books!
Girl In The Pink says
umm this post made me want ice cream for dinner!! I was about to drink a smoothie, but my blender broke mid smoothie creation – ice cream it is I suppose?!
Brittany says
Glad you’re no longer hating the glass castle. It’s one of my all time favorite books. Jeanette walls actually came to my school two years ago. She is so interesting.
Paige says
Haaaaaaaaa omg the dessert part was so boring. Who knew a reader could be EXCITED about Appalachia?
peanutbutterfingers says
No kidding!!!
Paige says
Ugh I just realized I misspelled desert and I sort of want to slap myself across the face. Especially since dessert is almost NEVER boring!
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
LOL…I quickly read that comment and thought “Wow, I find dessert REALLY exciting!” 😉
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
ahhhhh ice cream sounds sooo good right now~I think you’d love this placed called SCOOPS that I recently went to in LA! If you’re here ever 🙂 They have so many crazy flavors–haven’t tried this one but there’s a goat cheese/fig flavor hehe
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I’m RIGHT at that part too! I agree it has gotten a lot better!
Lara says
I LOVED that book. I read her second one, Half Broke Horses, which is the story of her grandmother. It wasn’t quite as good, but I still really enjoyed it.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
I have yet to try cake batter ice cream! It sounds so good 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
So weird, I bought that Ben and Jerry’s one because of your post and I don’t think that one tastes like cake batter. More like french vanilla with some fudge swirls. I mean, it’s GOOD and I will eat the whole thing without blinking, but I thought the cake batter froyo from Sweet! tasted more like it. Have you had that one before?
I think I’m not on a mission to try the Ben and Jerry’s S’mores flavor. 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
that would be “now” not “not” – I will never not be on a mission to try ice cream. 🙂
Cait's Plate says
You just gave me a HUGE craving for ice cream!! I was already craving it and unfortunately we don’t have any 🙁 I see a grocery store trip in the VERY near future for me!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
Ooh, I like that there are brownie bits in the cake batter ice cream. Sounds great! But really, I haven’t met a flavor of ice cream I didn’t like! 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
that ice cream looks delicious!!! For your next book, I recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein (if you haven’t already read it). It’s written from the point of view of a dog, so as a dog owner I think you’d enjoy it!
Jenny @ loveeatrun says
I read The Glass Castle and by the end, I couldn’t put it down. It’s just amazing to me how these kids grew up and that they were actually able to survive. So sad, yet so inspiring. My co-worker actually brought me in Half Broke Horses today, which is the story of the grandmother and how she raised the mother…I’m excited to read it just because I want to know how someone turns out the way she did!
Emily says
Ice Cream is my favorite! I could eat it everyday! Cake batter is always a plus!
Liz @ Something To Chew On says
Yummy looking ice cream! And I’m glad your opinion of the book is improving…I sure liked it 🙂
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Cake batter ice cream rocks my socks off! Have you ever put a tablespoon of cake mix in Greek Yogurt? It’s a WINNER!
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
Ice cream always makes things better!

I used to live in Gainesville and Mochi was starting to take over there. Considering the posts where you have mentioned fro yo, they are seriously lacking in the flavor department (only one chocolate flavor?! Nothing nutty?). Plus, they took over the Ben & Jerry’s that I could once walk to. I guess northern Florida needs a few lessons in frozen yogurt. Haha
Also, have you noticed the movie trend to your latest book reads? Sarah’s Key just came out too. The trailer gave me goosebumps–looks good!
alli says
Might have to check out the glass castle! Have you read any Kristin Hannah books? If not..they are all great!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I liked the Appalachia part best too. The scenery does change again one more time though so be prepared!
Brooke says
Next time, make your own cake batter ice cream. My husband and I have been adding 1-2tablespoons of funfetti mix to our vanilla bean light ice cream. It tastes amaazing!

I just had a cup of ice cream, myself. Breyer’s chocolate chip cookie dough :). My boyfriend bought me a half gallon last night because he knew that I had a rough day. He knows me too well :).
Daniella @Runner at Heart says
One of my favorite books I think you will leave it!
Jordan @ food, sweat, and beers says
I realized earlier today, when I went to my local froyospo (frozen yogurt spot. use it, spread it like wild fire.) that apparently, 3:40 pm is THE time to beat the lines. So if you guys start beating the dinner rush by eating dinner at 2:30 pm, I think you’ll be set.
Is that some sort of super-duper early bird special?
Sarah B. says
There is a gelato place near me that has cake batter gelato! The owner literally takes a cake, icing and all, and puts in the gelato maker! It is as epic as it sounds 🙂
Michelle @ Crazy*Running*Legs says
So I’m guessing you aren’t going to read her 2nd book? Hee.
Lindsey @ SoundEats says
I don’t know what it is about Mochi but it is ALWAYS slammed! We used to live in Gainesville and it was slammed there. We now live in Jacksonville, and even though there’s a better organic place nearly the same price in the same area, that Mochi is still always bumpin’. It’s cray cray! They must put crack in it. (For what it’s worth though, my husband does say that Mochi’s peanut butter frozen yogurt is the absolute best, most creamy and delicious fro yo he’s ever tasted!)
Amy says
yummm i could eat ice cream all day long!
Ashley@MyFoodFitnessFun says
I was on a mission for some ice cream tonight too. 🙂 Glad the ice cream was able to make up for the not so good hotel dinner…ice cream is wonderful like that!

So my family and I went on a 10 day long road trip across the whole entire USA (yes, we’re that crazy family) so I’ve pretty much been eating hotel breakfasts every morning and every time I think “I feel like Julie right now!” Anyways the other day I added a little waffle batter to some original oatmeal and it blew my mind. Waffle batter oatmeal?!? I even surprised myself with that little concoction. You’re doing a great job of putting up with those hotel meals and hope you get your vitamix back real soon though!
Khushboo says
Any ice cream which involves chocolate is good enough for me! 🙂
Allison (Allison's Delicious Life) says
Ice cream is my favorite thing in the world. Besides family and friends, that is… 🙂

The ice cream looks delish! Glass Castle is one of my fav books of all time! Yes you will make it through, but I am a lover of memoirs! You didn’t enjoy the desert parts?lol I was intrigued by that bc I couldn’t imagine ever living in the desert . But it’s very inspiring and makes you appreciate life a lot more:)

Some nights I get on a crazy trip for sorbet (my dairy-free love) and muuust go to one certain place to get it. It’s always packed but I wait in line forever to get it. I wish I had a few more near-by options for the stuff 🙂 Icecream is good at so many other places!

The other day Keith and I got fro-yo and I mixed cake batter with coconut and then topped with cinnamon toast crunch…I thought I had died.
