We had some extended family visit us and loved having extra time with my mom’s cousin, her daughter and Roo, the sweet 70-pound dog Katie rescued during her veterinary rotation in St. Kitts. It was wonderful having a dog in the house again and the boys loved taking Roo through all of her tricks before rewarding her with her treats! I’m also fairly certain Chase thought Katie was a superhero when we told him she’s a real veterinarian. He brought all of his stuffed “real animals” downstairs to show to Katie and her mom, Kris, and peppered Katie with questions about bearded dragons and lizards.
Buuut enough about the weekend! Let’s fast forward to today because I’m in the mood to kick it old school this morning and recap my Monday so far!
Today
Ryan and I called it an early night on Sunday and after reading for about 45 minutes — The Unhoneymooners, my latest Christina Lauren novel (you’re shocked, I know) — I fell asleep and slept hard until Ryder came tapping on my shoulder around 1 a.m. He had a burning question he just had to ask me in the middle of the night.
“Mom, why do we have to sleep for so long?”
Oh, my child.
I eventually got him settled back into his bed and after a second visit from Ryder about 45 minutes later, I finally got back to sleep. My alarm had me up at 5:30 a.m. for a quick workout to start the day.
I joined Ryan in the garage and went through a biceps, triceps and shoulder workout.
(Legggings: Lululemon Super High Rise Align Leggings / Sneakers: Adidas / Tumbler: 28-ounce Simple Modern — my fav!)
I finished it off with this one-song shoulder burner video from my blogging friend Nicole! It’s been a hot second since I’ve done a barre-inspired workout with super light weights and I almost forgot how much it can light my muscles on fiiire.
After my workout, I hopped in the shower, got dressed, said goodbye to Ryan as he headed into work and then checked on Chase and Ryder who were up “reading,” aka taking every single book out of their book case and flipping through the pages.
Since the big kids were content, I headed downstairs to pack their lunches for the day and then made my way into Rhett’s room to nurse him and get him up as well. (He didn’t have one of his super-early morning nursing sessions this morning and was in his crib from 6:45 p.m. until 7:15 a.m. which was a nice little treat for me!)
The boys’ lunches were more snacky than usual because we didn’t make it to the grocery store this weekend and I just tried my best to make something work!
Once everyone was downstairs, we all ate breakfast together. On Sunday evening, I prepped a few jars of peanut butter oatmeal cookie dough overnight oats for the week ahead and dug into one jar and spooned some of another jar into a bowl for Rhett. (The big kids opted for yogurt, a banana and no-bake oatmeal nut butter balls.)
After a few rounds of indoor football and some car races, I had the boys loaded into my car for Chase’s school drop off. We blasted the Encanto soundtrack on the way to school for the one thousandth time (it’s the BEST and just so darn happy) and then said goodbye to Chase as he headed off!
Ryder, Rhett and I then headed back home for a little playtime before Annemarie arrived to watch Rhett while I took Ryder to school.
Aaand that’s when I had a lovely little mom fail. As I pulled into Ryder’s preschool parking lot, I noticed there weren’t any cars lined up. Not a single one. Yeahhh today was definitely a teacher work day at the preschool and Ryder does not have school. Oops! I immediately texted two of my friends whose kids also go to Ryder’s preschool with all of the frazzled and embarrassed mom emojis and they all made me feel instantly better saying they’ve done the same thing before. If your Monday started off with a mom fail or two today, just know you’re not alone. Haha!
Immediately called Annemarie from the parking lot and she was awesome and agreed to watch Ryder, too, so I could still get some work done this morning at a local coffee shop.
Once I finally made it to the coffee shop I knew I wanted to chat with you guys this morning before diving into my to-do list because the opportunity to chat in real-time always feels like a treat to me. It definitely brings me back to the good ol’ days!
I hope you all have a great Monday and hopefully I’ll see ya back here for more blogging shenanigans later this week!

You’re not alone! I had a similar mom fail but it was early evening and about 40 minutes away at what I thought was our son’s soccer game. I was not only there earlier then we needed to be but it didn’t dawn on me until about 10 minutes later. I was looking around at the empty parking lot thinking where is everybody?🤦🏼♀️ By the way our boys were playing with the same race car tracks this weekend!

Some weeks are smoother than others — haha! Thanks for making me feel less alone in my frazzled morning!

Hi Julie!! Wondering when you go to pick up Chase from kindergarten in the afternoons, do you have to take Rhett and Ryder with you every afternoon?! If so how do you make that…not suck LOL
Julie says
Your comment made me LOL! Rhett always comes and Ryder almost always comes unless Ryan happens to be working from home and he’s having quiet time/napping. As for making it suck less, we’re all about having fun car snacks and playing good music but it can absolutely feel like a grind some days. And if Ryder knows we’re going to get Chase and then going to a park afterward or something like that, he’s way more interested in piling back into the car so we’ll try to do something fun after school a few times a week.

Thank you for taking the time! Great tips!! I’m okay right now with dropping off my oldest with my other two littles in tow, but for pickup we have to go IN to the school which is just A LOT! <3

I just HAVE to know. Why DO we have to sleep for so long?
LOL That kid cracks me up.
Julie says
It was apparently VERY pressing question at 1 a.m. Haha!

“Mom, why do we have to sleep for so long?” ~ that cracked me up. Ha!!

My 5 year old daughter woke me up at 1:30 because she wanted to cuddle with me. How can I say no to that?!?! My latest mom fail was taking my son, 10, to wrestling practice at 5:45 when I thought it started but it really started at 5:00 so he missed 45 minutes of it. I’m sure I’ll have another fail soon 🙂

I think I was around 10 or so and my mom was going to drive me to swim practice. For some reason, though, I got in my dad’s car to wait for her and was reading quietly in the backseat. I apparently was so engrossed in my book that I didn’t notice my mom get into her car and drive away without me. She got about 10 minutes away from the house before she asked me a question and when I didn’t respond realized she had left me at home. It was a ‘fail’ on both our parts haha 😛
It happens to the best of us! Have a good week!
Julie says
Oh my gosh! Too funny! Apparently it happens to all of us at some point. Haha!
Sarah says
Hey Julie- random question. But I remember a long time ago you asking people on the blog about car recommendations for a family a five. What did you guys end up deciding? We have baby #3 on the way and currently in the same dilemma! Gotta fit three car seats in this new car ha! Thanks!!

My boys pressured me into getting a bearded dragon last year after much research. I must say he has really grown on me, they are fairly low maintenance (I could do without feeding the live crickets and worms though!) and he has such a fun personality!

I’m 95% sure we’re going to get one when we move!
