Hello there!
It’s officially MOVING WEEK for the Fagan family! On Wednesday night we will be driving back to Florida and officially moving all of our stuff out of our house on Thursday and Friday. Am I looking forward to it? Not even a little bit. But thank goodness we will have the help of movers for the first time ever. I am so used to packing everything up in a Uhaul, so it will be really nice to have some professional help this time around.
I can pretty much guarantee the professional movers will be more helpful than Sadie…
I will never forget Sadie sprawling out on the lawn and sighing dramatically as we packed up the Uhaul for our move from Orlando to Ocala. She cracked us up!
We said she was clearly depressed about leaving behind all of her dog park friends and the mouse infestation that provided her with a lot of entertainment (and me with a lot of nightmares).
I’m also really, really excited to see my family this week! We will be spending the weekend with them after all of our stuff is packed up. I’m counting down the days!
Weekend
Backing up a little bit… How was everyone’s weekend? Mine was filled with outdoor fun, a girls’ night sushi dinner uptown with Caitlin and her best friend Nicole, errand-running and more.
You know you’re an adult when furniture shopping becomes a highlight of your weekend.
Ryan and I are on a mission to find a ridiculously comfortable couch. The current owners of the house we’re in the process of buying have a fantastic sectional in their living room that we tried our best to negotiate into the price of the house. They weren’t having it, so we’re on a mission to buy a similar one that will basically swallow me whole when I sit on it. Our current leather couch/loveseat combo is far from comfortable and while we find it aesthetically pleasing, I’m dying for a couch that feels super comfy.
We managed to find one we like yesterday but want to move into the house, measure everything and get a real feel for the space before making the commitment. I spent some time on Houzz and Pinterest last night trying to come up with a vision for our family room and definitely gravitate toward white and beige rooms with little pops of light blue or a blue-gray color here and there.
Ryan is just happy I don’t want the room to be mint green because apparently that’s the color I’m loving most right now. (I will have a mint green laundry room. Just you wait!)
Yesterday’s furniture shopping extravaganza came with some fun breaks in the form of food. We stopped for brunch and frozen yogurt which made the process a little more fun.
Toast is quickly becoming our go-to brunch spot. It’s delicious and yesterday I ordered a terrific omelet and almost gave our waitress a high five for loading it up with lots of brie. Fantastic!
Hope you had a fabulous weekend!
Questions of the Morning
- Furniture shopping: Love it or loathe it?
- Do you own a couch that you think is the most comfortable couch in all the land? Where did you get it (…because I want to buy it)?

SO true. I’m sure we will be donating/getting rid of a ton of stuff this weekend!
Laura O says
we recently found a really comfy couch at West Elm. They are having a furniture sale right now too!
Laura @ Raise Your Garden says
Love West Elm for style. But I don’t think you can beat Arhaus furniture for comfort!
Right now, using couches that husband brought from a co-worker. They’re leather but so NOT comfortable. Or stylish for that matter, but we were desperate. They were $25 a piece. In retrospect, we think we overpaid. hehe.
ashley says
we bought a Catnapper Harbor Reclining Sectional last summer. Seriously, everyone who sits in it loves it! its more comfortable than most beds.
Karen says
Here is my tip for you Julie: I buy a ton from Craigslist. Things that can be washed down ( not a couch) but sometimes you can get things from a furniture warehouse. Look at my Blog on this just to see the cool, cheap things we have gotten. You don’t have to spend a lot to get cool stuff!
http://fabinyour40s.wordpress.com/2014/05/19/my-addiction/
Julie says
A ton of our furniture is actually craigslist furniture! Totally agree that it is a great resource. I’ve been checking the Charlotte-area craigslist for (clean!) couches and haven’t found anything that I love just yet, but I’m still looking!
Karen says
Too funny. People look at me like I am crazy when I tell them I always look at Craigslist first. Many people think it’s a scam but you can get great stuff, as you know!
aladygoeswest says
I’ve used movers for my last few moves (especially the one in which I went from Orlando to San Francisco, because that was a necessity) and it really helps the process.
I have a couch suggestion: Have you looked at Macy’s furniture? Macy’s has a huge sectional leather sofa with a pull-out bed that my husband I had before moving into our smaller city apartment. It was the BEST couch ever.
Good luck this week!
Julie says
No, I didn’t even think to look there! Thanks for the rec. I’ll definitely check it out.
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
Oh my gosh. I could furniture shop ALL.DAY.LONG. A comfy couch is basically the most important part of the house! Second only to a comfy bed.
We are living in our first apartment since getting married in the spring and I bought a nice couch from a friend who was moving. I think it’s fine (especially for the deal we got!) but my husband can’t wait till the day we move and can splurge on a couch that we just melt into! Hope you find one like that!
Julie says
A couch I can melt into is my goal!!!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
Moving is definitely no easy task! Packing stuff and figuring out where to put it all is so overwhelming, but it’ll all be worth it and come together before you know it. Good luck!!
Jenn says
We just moved into our new house in June and we bought THE MOST comfy couch from Macy’s. Not sure if you have Macy’s furniture up there, we are in Tampa. It has three power recliners which is the best invention, and it has the most durable, comfortable fabric ever. It also was by the far the best price we found when comparing similar sectionals. Here’s a link, I can’t reccomend it enough!! Good luck in your search and with your move!

Comfy couches are a must 🙂 We have a Weekends Only which is like overstock for furniture so we got a great deal. Not sure if they have those in NC!
I LOVE furniture shopping, as long as the staff are polite. We’ve had people give us some looks and try to give us the run around because they assume we’re young and either not serious or not well informed.
Kelly b says
We bought the Pearce sectional from pottery barn bc it was a deep couch…my husband is 6’5″. It is very comfortable and big! The only downfall is our dogs like to sit on the back cushions so they have lost their shape :(. Something to think about if Sadie likes to sit on the couch. Good luck with your move
Lauren @ Beautiful Plant-Based Life says
I LOVE your idea for a mint green laundry room. I think small rooms like a private office, laundry room, or even a bathroom are the perfect place to experiment and just go for it (in terms of colors or patterns)! Living in a rental apartment in NYC, my husband and I are stuck with white walls for now. But we can dream… 😉
kristin @ W [H] A T C H says
i loveeee furniture shopping. we’ve never invested in a great couch — but we almost bought a couch on the spot from crate + barrel because it was so comfortable…sort of regret not buying it.
Kristin says
My brother found the most comfortable leather couches at Value City Furniture. 7 years and a move from Florida to Virginia later and all of their guests still say they would rather sleep on the couch than in the guest room!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
I love furniture shopping when I don’t actually need it. When I seem to need a specific piece, it becomes a quest. However, we just bought the Chesterfield couch/loveseat from Pottery Barn. We’ve had it almost a full month and hmm, I don’t know. It’s aesthetically a gorgeous couch but I haven’t found my comfort groove with it yet. But then again my rump was used to a well broken in 8 year old couch so I hope this is just a breaking in period. All I know is I’m glad to not be fighting with back cushion pillows anymore. Those only look good the first year and then look like deflated balloons. 🙂

Being in the Navy, I have had to move quite a few times. I have always used professional movers! It makes your life so much easier! I had a company once that packed everything for me. They even unpacked and repacked stuff I had already done to account for everything. Good luck!!
Brynn says
We got our sectional from Ethan Allen and it is AMAZING! I am in love. Good luck with the move!
pieceofcaitlin says
happy moving week!!! <3 it will be worth all the craziness once its over! 🙂

If you’re looking for a cozy fabric couch then check out La-z-boy. We had an amazing one from them with a chaise, but sadly we had to sell it when we moved because it wouldn’t fit in our new house. Now we have a great, and rediciously comfortable, leather reclining couch from Craftmaster, which is built in NC by the way! Check out their website and see if there is a store nearby with some pieces. I swear you will love it!!
Lindsey @ Simply Lindsey says
I love furniture shopping!! My husband and I recently visited friends in Charlotte and went to two awesome furniture stores near Tupelo Honey (amazing biscuits btw!). Wish I could remember the names!
Paige @ Your Trainer Paige says
YES. Movers FTW. We didn’t use them moving from IL to CO, but when we buy a home in March, movers are definitely part of the plan 😉
Amanda says
OMG girl good luck, I loathe it only because I feel like I need to see EVERY option before I can make a choice. I love looking through gorgeous, put together homes, but always feel like my final creations fall short of that. GOOD LUCK!
Chelsea @ A Fit LittleOne says
I can just see Sadie sighing, that literally made me LOL hahaha. She is just too funny! Well I’ve never had to buy furniture yet, but come next summer I will be, and I’m super excited about doing it!! But after looking at a couple places I’ll probably be eating my words haha.
Amanda says
Good luck finding the perfect couch! My husband and I moved to Charleston SC from FL and ever since moving we have talked about upgrading our furniture and a comfy couch is a must! We are still on the hunt! Hope you find something amazing!!
Beth @ Running with the Sunrise says
I love furniture shopping! It’s so fun to nest and make your home pretty. And Houzz is super addicting when you’re moving or redecorating. I spent hours on that site before I moved last winter. Good luck finding the perfect couch!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Moving is always more work that I think it will be. You don’t realize how much stuff you have til you have to pack it all up!
Michelle Hunt (@PeachyPalate) says
We’re getting a new couch just because our one isn’t! It’s just a must! One mint green wall in the living room might be nice?!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
I really enjoy furniture shopping too! Haha The highlight of my weekend was a girl’s trip to Kansas City. It was so fun!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I had movers 1 time when I moved from Boston to NY. When I had first moved into that Boston apartment it happened to be the week the elevator broke and I was moving from a 4th floor apartment to a 4th floor apartment. Needless to say, we were all exhausted by the end of that weekend and my dad said when I moved out we were getting movers, just in case. So we did!
Megan @ Piece of Kake says
Decorating a new house can be so much fun! It will be a lot of work but in 6 months when you are all settled and your house looks exactly how you want it will all be worth it!
Brittany says
My couch is from Z Gallerie. Sometimes I fear that it is just TOO comfortable because my boyfriend and I tend to get stuck there indefinitely in relaxed bliss. One of my friends just got a couch from there as well after an exhausting search of big box stores and it is soooo lovely. Both aesthetically pleasing and mad comfortable.
Jacki @ Two Forks One Love says
We’re looking at one from Z Gallerie too. The reviews I read online have lots of complaints about the fabric piling and the cushions not holding their shape. How long have you had yours and have you had similar problems? (It’s the Cameron sectional that we’re considering.)
Brittany says
My couch is actually a velvet material (you can see it on my blog) and I haven’t had any issues with pilling and its REALLY easy to clean (the fabric seriously still looks brand new). Everything wipes right away with just some water and the occasional magic eraser. It may depend on the fabric you choose though. We also haven’t had any issues with the cushions really and we’ve had the couch for two years. It just takes a little bit of punching to get the back pillows back in shape after my boyfriend slumps down into them. Its like a fun workout–hah! I have noticed the seat cushions getting a little–and I hesitate to say–lumpy (they’re not so much lumpy as just a bit imperfect). It doesn’t bother me at all though and I haven’t done anything to try to fix it as its barely noticeable and hasn’t impacted the comfort level at all. Good luck with your couch search! The Cameron is actually the one my friend bought and she LOVES it!
Lauren says
Couches are such a tricky piece to buy! I remember going to furniture stores, walking around plopping down onto every.single.couch. Too stiff. Too squashy. To narrow. To scratchy. I was like goldilocks. And then I sat into the most comfortable thing ever. Unfortunately, it was a gold velour color which didn’t exactly go with my color scheme, but I thought it was so comfortable I didn’t care. I’ve had to for 5 years now, and still find it ridiculously comfortable. When my husband is out of town sometimes I purposely just go to bed on the couch… (it’s in the main picture here: http://www.flexsteel.com/home-furniture/products/sofas-and-sectionals/sofas/page/all)
Kelly Runs for Food says
Good luck with couch shopping! We need a new one too, and I love the ones from Pottery Barn, but they’re super pricey.
Keep the restaurant recommendations coming- I’ll be in Charlotte for work in a couple weeks, so I love reading about your favorite spots!
Lee@tri*inspired*life says
We have an awesome sectional from Crate & Barrel (it is the Lounge line)! We had been shopping FOREVER for a new piece for our bonus room, and found this! What we like most about this piece is that you can totally customize it and we have a chaise on both ends of ours. The chaises are over sized (can comfortably fit two snugglers). We selected the microfiber fabric and it is great! The matching ottoman is over sized as well and is a storage unit! It is super, duper comfy!!!! Good luck!!!
Jen @ Bagels to Broccoli says
My husband and I are moving on Monday as well, except not to our own house – just to *yet another* apartment in Boston! I’ve moved every year for the past five years and I am ALL KINDS OF SICK OF IT. Hate. You’ll get through it, though, and then it will be exciting times from here on out!
Amy says
We bought our sectional at Steinhafels and it is hands down the greatest couch in the world. Our Rhodesian Ridgeback sighs with pleasure every time he sneaks up there. I told my husband we should have bought two and put the other in storage until we need it just in case they no longer have it when this couch needs to be replaced… 🙂
Jessie @ Just Jessie says
Couches that are so comfortable that they basically swallow you are the best kind. Sometimes I like going furniture shopping just to sit in the comfy couches that I can’t afford (yet). 😉
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Moving is not easy! It can help to wait to buy furniture around holiday weekends. They often have special deals and discounts. Good luck this week!
Liz L. says
You are lucky because you live so close to the High Point area….all of those great furniture stores! Have you been furniture shopping there yet? We live in New England and flew down to NC when we moved into our house to go furniture shopping. We saved thousands of dollars on our new furniture…plus the selection is amazing! I can’t remember all of the stores we visited except for Furnitureland South…wow, it was huge! We bought our bedroom set there. I also second/third Macy’s…we bought our family room couch at Macy’s for a great price and plan to buy our next one there again soon. Have fun shopping and good luck with your move!
My Cajun Trinity says
The Bernhardt line of couches are super comfy. That’s what we have. It’s super deep, which enables my fiancé and I to both fit comfortably on the couch together.
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
Oh my goodness, our couch and love seat, aka “chofa” are AMAZEBALLS. They’re a super soft, chocolate brown color, and everyone who sits on them asks us about them! They are perfect for napping, and while they may not look like the most mature couch set ever, my toosh is always pleased to have them! We bought them here in Arkansas at a store called “Hank’s Fiiiiiiiine Furniture.” If that doesn’t sound like a red neck furniture store, I don’t know what does. But definitely go for comfort over design – I grew up with leather couches..but oh my goodness those things are NOT comfortable!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Yay! Such an exciting and busy week ahead for you guys!
I’m a couch hunt too. I want one that is practical with kids, comfortable, and lighter beige in color that won’t break the bank. Let us know what you find!!! I may end up copying you. 😉
Jacki @ Two Forks One Love says
Good luck on your move! We’re trying to hire movers for our move from DC to Atlanta, but the quotes we’ve received are INSANE — one was $7000! For a two bedroom apartment!!!!! We also went furniture shopping this weekend. Found my desk, our dining room table and we think our couch. We found it at Z Gallerie — it’s a super comfy sectional, so you may want to check there!
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
omg our couch is SO COMFY! We have a huge couch and a matching HUGE comfy chair and they are just the best. I keep telling my bf that we are never ever getting another couch because this one is so great! Sadly I have no idea where it’s from- my bro found it on craigslist and then passed it on to me, ha! Hope your search is successful!!
Fit 'N' Cookies says
I can’t wait to see what you do to your new house! I hated furniture shopping. Everything was either ridiculously uncomfortable, or very very expensive! I know what you mean with an awesome couch, though. I love the ones that swallow you up!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Movers will change your life. I guarantee it. I moved a couple of weeks ago and hired movers, and it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done. They’re worth every single penny (or at least mine were!).

This makes me laugh! I have been helping my parents unpack in their new place. I thought the packing process was awful, but unpacking everything has been worse! And…we went couch shopping the other day. It was all going fine until we went to pay & my father backed out at the last possible second. It was pretty funny. I have a sofa from Norwalk )Metro is the style) that I absolutely love. 11 years in & I won’t give it up. LOVE IT!
Laur says
I am SO obsessed with mint green. Actually, I’ve been picking it up whenever I see a shirt with the color option so much I realized I was wearing mint green almost every day! I cannot get enough of it!

I’m a fairly new reader, but yours has quickly become one of my favorite blogs to read! I so appreciate your optimism and positive posts, and I’ve enjoyed all of the updates on house-hunting! So excited for you to be able to OFFICIALLY move over the next few days – wishing you nothing but the best in this whole new adventure! 🙂
Amy says
Yay for furniture shopping! And also, I am taking my first trip to Florida next week to stay with my cousin who is completing a Physician’s Assistance rotation. I’ve been reading your blog for years, and couldn’t believe it when she said that the condo she is staying at is in Ocala! If you have any must-see activities in Ocala, please let me know! I’ll be doing plenty of lounging around while she’s in ‘school’, so I’ll be lookin’ for things to do (I’d make a pretty good Sadie-watcher, I think).
