We are officially all moved into our new house!
I wish I had a fun weekend recap to share with you, but unless you want to see tons of pictures of boxes, protective wrapping paper, miscellaneous junk and stuff splayed out all over every table and countertop in our house, I don’t have much!
The movers arrived later than expected on Friday (around 11 a.m.) but they worked like crazy and had everything in our new house by 6:30 p.m. I spent the entire day helping with the move and unpacking. I didn’t sit down or take a break until close to 8 p.m. when I basically collapsed in a heap on the floor and inhaled a burrito from Chipotle.
I know this may sound strange, but I kind of like unpacking and organizing. It gives me a chance to thoroughly sift through our stuff and determine what we need or should donate. Ryan laughed at me last night when it took me a solid 20 minutes to organize my “gift wrap” box where I store wrapping paper, gift bags, ribbon, etc. Our house may still be in shambles but now our tissue paper and gift wrap container is nice and tidy!
Our main goal for the weekend was to unpack everything, take things out of boxes and get the kitchen set up. I am happy to report that everything kitchen-related has a home in a drawer or cabinet!
Ryan also did bit of closet deconstruction yesterday and took out some shelving units and added more hanging racks which allowed us to unpack and organize our clothes. The master bedroom is also almost done which is a great feeling. We just need to hang some pictures.
We’ve been unpacking and organizing ever since the movers arrived and there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. For those who have asked, yes I will definitely share some pictures as rooms start to come together a bit!
My mission for today is to get the internet set up (I’m currently blogging from a coffee shop), organize my home office (easier said than done) and work on an outside project.
Oh! And I cannot sign off this morning without giving an update on Sadie! She seems to be loving her new home but she proved, yet again, to be the least helpful little creature during moving day. She did serve as comic relief for the movers, Ryan and me, though!
I think I’ve mentioned this before, but Sadie is super weird about sitting on hardwood or tile floors. Ever since she was a puppy, she has refused to sit down on hard surfaces and will only sit on carpeted or soft surfaces (or, preferably, our laps). We don’t understand why, but it’s one of her many goofy quirks that amuses us.
The entire downstairs of our new house has hardwood flooring and an hour or so into the move, I looked over at Sadie as I unpacked a box in the kitchen and saw her pitifully looking at me in downward dog (butt in the air, paws on the ground). She would not put her butt on the ground and naturally I babied her and put a towel on the floor. She instantly sprawled out and relaxed on the towel like a little princess.
Once we unpacked a box with blankets, she got upgraded to a quilt.
I love that crazy little lady.
Questions of Morning
- Pet owners: Do your pets have any ridiculous quirks that you don’t understand?
- Any amusing moving-related stories out there?
Umm come organize my house please! We moved like 6 years ago, but I absolutely hate unpacking and organizing! Zoey prefers sitting/laying on the couch or a mat, blanket, or towel too!
one of my pups is the same way with hard floors – he refuses to sit down on them and will always go over to the carpeted area to sit. too funny.
I like unpacking and reorganizing too! I hate to be a pack rat so going through things and clearing out what I don’t need makes me very happy.
My boxer Reina does the same thing. Refuses to sit on anything hard. She too, is a princess. My dachshund Rhett will not go outside in the rain.
Congrats on the new house!
My dog gets scared of any un-carpeted surface. It kind of comes and goes, but it’s frustrated because we only have carpeting in our master bedroom. The room he stays in while we aren’t home is tile, and the steps that go down to the basement (where his doggie door is) is also a slick flooring, so you can imagine how frustrating it can be. We’ve had to get an area rug for that room and put down these ugly tread strips on the stairs, and he still hesitates when going up/down. Often when we come home on our lunch break, he’s standing at the bottom of the steps, refusing to come up until we coax him up. It’s so silly because when he crosses a slick floor, he walks funny which always causes him to slip. If he would just walk normally, he would be fine! Dogs are so silly.
Awwww! I’m sure this gets old for you, but reading about it made me smile — your dog sounds adorable. 🙂 Glad I’m not the only pet owner whose dog is a little ridiculous about things like this!
My dog has so many quirks that picking one out was a difficult task. I don’t know if it is something that is directly related to him having been adopted from a shelter, but the guy is a little “off”. Luckily, where he lacks in smarts he makes up for in lovey-ness 🙂 One of Henry’s oddest quirks has to be the fact that he does laps between our master bedroom and guest bedroom every.single.night. I know everyone has their nightly routine, but momentarily taking up the body of an Olympic track star is an odd one! I HATE moving because I have done it entirely too much but I do like the feeling of someplace new and I also enjoy unpacking and organizing. Congrats on the new place!
HAHA too funny about Sadie not sitting on hard floors! Your house looks amazing and I can’t wait to see more pictures! Have fun organizing and unpacking 🙂
I totally get it! I LOVE moving simply for the sake of organizing and cleaning a new space and hoping for it to be cleaner and more efficient than the last. I get that it’s weird. 😉
Exactly! I think that’s why it’s taking me so long… I am thoroughly cleaning everrrrything before putting it away. 🙂
Hahahahaha I love that Sadie won’t lay down on a hardwood floor. My brother’s golden retriever, Molly, will lay down just about anywhere!
Congrats on the move! I’m actually headed to Charlotte today for a work trip. I hate the packing up part of moving, but I LOVE unpacking and finding new homes for things.
Me too!
Haha! That story about Sadie cracks me up! Moving can definitely be tiring, but I also love the process of going through all of my old things and throwing out/donating whatever I don’t need anymore. It’s almost cleansing, in a weird way lol!
When my husband and I helped my brother move into his new apartment, it happened to be a second floor walk-up, and at the top of the stairs, the hall way curved a little. He had this giant couch he wanted us to help him with, and it was literally like the episode of Friends when Rachel and Chandler help Ross move his couch up a flight of steps. My brother kept yelling, “PIVOT! PIVOT!” over and over, and the couch wasn’t moving at all… I couldn’t help but to laugh at the entire situation, and how much it resembled that episode lol! We ended up not being able to fit the couch up the stairs, but at least it didn’t break in half!
Hope you have a wonderful Monday!
Hahaha – Sadie is HILARIOUS.
I agree with you totally on unpacking! It’s definitely hectic, but it’s chance to start fresh, and I love that! PS Love what I see of your house, the windows are gorgeous!
My husband and I just moved to a new [rental] apartment as well, and like you, I didn’t eat ALL MORNING until it was done (NOT TYPICAL) and also inhaled a Chipotle burrito at the end of it all. Clearly it’s a moving thang.
WOOHOO!!! Based on the entryway, the house looks adorable!! 🙂 Congrats again, Julie!!
Our black lab one day started to hate walking on hardwood floors. It got to the point where my husband had to pick him up and carry him in/out of the living room (which was actually quite comical since our dog weighs about 100 pounds) because he refused to walk on the floors. We finally broke down and bought two more rugs so our big guy can move about without actually touching the hardwood floors, ha. The things we do for our animals 🙂
We spent all weekend scrubbing walls, mopping floors, and putting primer on the walls! We’re still working on packing up the old house, but getting rid of stuff is so tough! I can’t wait to unpack and organize at the new house, so exciting.
Congrats!!!!
Our dog loves popcorn. But refuses to eat it if it does not have butter on it! He begs for it and once he realizes it not buttered he turns his nose up to it. Pets are so funny! Congrats on the move!
Hahaha!
Excited for you guys! The kitchen was the first room I put my time and energy into as well. I feel like once the kitchen is done, the house already feels SO much homier. I think we have a similar lamp! HomeGoods? Mine has the burlap top, but the base is a little different. Love it!
Sadie is too cute! My neighbor has a 5-month-old Vizla, and he also refuses to sit on hardwood floor. Too funny!
Congratulations on your move!
Oh my gosh if they were my neighbor I would never leave their house. Vizsla puppies are so darn adorable!! 🙂
Glad the move went well! I love unpacking/organizing as well 🙂
Can’t wait to see some photos!
We have a Rhodesian Ridgeback (similar to a viszla) and he flat out refuses to sit on hardwood floors as well. We asked our vet if there was something wrong because we were very concerned. We were told that that type of breed, because of the way their…hindquarters are shaped, they have a very hard time sitting on hard surfaces, very similar to a human that has a bony behind and it hurts to sit on concrete, etc. Sadie might be the same way since the breeds are similar…or our dogs are just very high maintenance 🙂
I love that you asked your vet about this!! Makes sense to me. And I love Rhodesian Ridgebacks! Sometimes people think Sadie is a Rhodesian puppy. 🙂
Love love LOVE your dishes – I like to mix and match also, it’s very fun – can you see the cabinet, ie are the on display with no doors?
Good luck with the rest!
This is the one cabinet with opaque doors so you can see through a little bit! And thanks for the compliment! Most of the dishes were actually Fiesta dishes that were once my grandmas but I just picked certain colors to place together. 🙂
Aww Sadie is too adorable! She must have been so happy when you put down that towel. 😀
That’s so funny about Sadie!! Hope the unpacking is going well!! My husband was a gypsy before we met, and we still kind of are, so I kind of like the packing up (or getting rid of stuff haha) and moving to a new place. More so the moving to a new place though than the packing haha!
Hey I had a thought for you- I was telling my Mom about your consignment store problem and she said you should try Craigslist! She is in Chapel Hill and has had a lot of success. But I think it takes time and commitment to check and check
You can get SUCH nice stuff on Craigslist! Search “Ethan Allen” and you’ll have to sort through, but good values + beautiful furniture!
My dog isn’t a fan of our hardwoods either. She walks funny on them and gets no traction (like a cat with her nails splayed out). She only lays on the area rugs when we’re in a room with hardwoods. She will sit on them though so not as extreme as Sadie. I think it’s a comfort/traction thing for most dogs. She’s even taken a tumble a few times when trying to run on them. Poor girl!
Congrats on the move! Looking forward to seeing some pics of the inside. 🙂
My cat actually loves splaying out on the hardwood floor. Especially in the summer when she’s really hot. She’ll do it in the middle of the floor and will lay all twisted in weird shapes it’s hard to believe it’s comfortable for her.
That’s how my sister and her husband’s chocolate lab is– Kona looooves hardwood floors!
I loved moving last year because it gave me a chance to organize and de clutter. Unfortunately after only a year, I think I’ve already accumulated more stuff.
Ha, what a little princess!
I always think that moving is a great time to get rid of things (and it is!) but somehow I always end up getting rid of more things while I’m unpacking than while I’m packing it up to begin with! I wonder how many fewer boxes I’d pack if I got rid of it in the beginning?!
Oh, absolutely. My dog scratches our family room carpet as if she is digging a hole. She scratches and scratches thinking she is making a nice little bed and then lays down. The carpet is ruined but she is too cute to get mad at!!
So distructively adorable! 🙂
So exciting that you are now moved into your new home! I love moving and unpacking, the feeling once everything has a place is so rewarding! Look forward to seeing pictures of the house in the future 🙂
i actually like unpacking too! ESP home stuff.. its fun to also set up a room a new way 🙂
Moving day is unreal! I have had a few of them recently – time seems to fly by and yet it is SO exhausting!
Moving is such a workout. Keep everything clean! The house usually starts off neat and tidy but by mid year it looks like a tornado.
Congrats on the move! So exciting! Roadie has normal dog quirks, but one thing that always cracks me up is that he always buries himself in our closet clothes. We have a low hanging shelf and I always her him scratching and burrowing from above when I am downstairs. I’ll walk up and find him in the back corner engulfed in all of scott’s jackets and long sleeved shirts. I’m sure he appreciates it. 😉
Also, my friend’s dog (Macy) can’t stand rugs on the floor. I guess she’s the opposite of Sadie! Every time she comes over the first thing she does is go to our bathroom and move it out of the way. It’s hilarious.
My vizsla is the same way with sitting on hard surfaces! Every now & then she’ll shock me & be sprawled out on the hard wood floor, but that is very rare.
LMAO …. when we moved all the pets hid in the sinks … out of the way and able to hide.
Maybe the hardwood makes her skinny little butt cold? 🙂
Congrats on the new house!! Can’t wait for a virtual tour 😉
Love the arched brick in your entryway!
Thank you!
Glad to hear that the move went well! Enjoy getting settled 🙂
My dog will only eat treats or chew his rawhide’ chewies’ on carpet. He wont eat them on the tile or hardwood so he has to go all the way to one of tbe back bedrooms every time since they are the only carpeted areas
Our 70lb Yellow Lab hates the laminate woof floors in our rental we moved into 4 months. She gets no traction and slips and slides all over the places which terrifies her. She has gotten stuck on sofas because she is so scared to get down. It’s gotten better…but not by much.
Unpacking and reorganizing is totally fun! Everything can be put where you want and how it should be!
Whew! I bet you feel relieved to finally be moved in, now the fun of unpacking begins! My Daisy is spoiled in that she never lies or sits on the bare floor. If there is a rug she’ll lay on that. My husband brings her to work sometimes and he has to bring her bed otherwise she will steal people’s office chairs when they get up cause she hates the floor.
When we moved almost two years ago, our dogs went crazy. We lived with my in-laws for a few long months and that was an adjustment for them. When we moved into the new house, they did not know what to do – especially since we had stairs and new furniture. There was a lot of running and jumping and sniffing and I was so grateful for some of our old furniture so that they had something familiar.
Lol, our hound refuses to sit on any hard flooring too, and all but 2 bedrooms in our house have hardwood/laminate wood flooring. He does really enjoy sprawling out on the wood floor in the entryway/library next to our A/C vents when we get back from a run though, much cooler than carpet!
I LOVE unpacking and putting everything away!! We just bought our first condo and waiting for it to be built, I cannot WAIT to get in there and start organizing haha! Also I am in love with your lamp in the first pic, where is it from?
First of all, Sadie is adorable and has me seriously considering getting a vizsla when I get a dog! Also, this: http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/blogs/vitamin-g/2014/09/dunkin-donuts-almond-milk
Hooray!
Congrats on the new house! You sound like a much better unpacker than I am. My husband and I moved 3 months ago and we STILL have boxes to go through. Yikes!
Our dog Kona is a 1 yr old golden retriever. She’s got a bunch of weird quirks, but the funniest one is that she likes to walk the back of the couch like its a tight rope and then she lays down. It always freaks me out that she is going to fall over, but she never does. She is like a cat!
Enjoy the new house!
Congratulations on the new house! I’m sure you are so happy moving day is over with!
My dog is a good mover but when we bought our house we found out she is not a fan of hardwood floors as is Sadie. We have rugs, blankets and dog beds all over our main floor. Plus as she’s gotten older she slips on them and has injured herself, so we have carpet runners down on her normal paths for her to walk on.
I think her biggest quirk is not laying fully on her bed. She’s little and her beds are more than big enough – but she will always have at least one body part hanging off of her beds – a leg, her behind, even her head at times is dangling off her bed. I don’t know how she rests like that but she seems to like it!
