I’m also trying to get better and better about drinking lots of water throughout the day. Now that I’m teaching a water fitness class in the middle of the day in the stifling Florida heat, I’m sweating more than ever and need to stay hydrated. I try to make sure to drink a big glass of water before every meal and snack and carry a water bottle with me everywhere. I love adding sliced cucumber, lemons and limes or strawberries to water for a little flavor.
My Favorite Healthy Snacks
- Greek Yogurt with Nuts and Chia Seeds
This snack is creamy, crunchy and protein-packed. Another benefit? According to a Harvard review, nuts such as walnuts may help lower cholesterol and cardiovascular risk.
- High Fiber, Whole Grain Cereal and Nut Trail Mix
When I’m in the mood for something slightly sweeter, I opt for a homemade trail mix made with high fiber, whole grain cereal, nuts and yogurt-covered almonds. A few of the yogurt almonds add a kick of sweetness that satisfies my sweet tooth while also providing my body with healthy fats and a bit of protein.
I made these last week and they were perfectly portable and poppable. In less than 30 seconds, I can pop into the break room, grab two of these oatmeal walnut date balls and head out to meet with my next client. A super-fast snack!
- Fresh vegetables with homemade tzatzki sauce or hummus
This lighter snack is one of my favorites to eat right before I have to teach my group exercise class. It doesn’t sit heavy in my stomach and is an easy way to incorporate vegetables into my diet. Fresh peppers and cucumbers are my favorite because they’re extra hydrating. According to SHAPE magazine, bell peppers are 92 percent water!
- Granola Bar or Whole Wheat English Muffin Topped with Peanut Butter
As a big-time peanut butter lover, you know I’m all about this snack. Healthy fats and whole grains. Nice and filling!
I cannot get enough of this stuff! I love sprinkling it on top of Greek yogurt or cottage cheese and make a big batch of the granola couple of times a month to have on hand for easy snacking. The ingredient list is short and includes stuff I almost always have on hand in the pantry.
- Fresh Fruit with Nuts or Nut Butter
Another hydrating snack, and one of my favorites to eat right after I’m done teaching water fitness! There’s something so refreshing about cold grapes and I make sure to eat them with a handful of nuts for some staying power.
- Cottage Cheese with Fresh Berries and Cinnamon
I know many people are creeped out by cottage cheese, but I love the stuff. Adding a dash of cinnamon really kicks up the flavor! I’ll also often add some chopped nuts to this snack for some healthy fats.
- Hard Boiled Eggs with Veggies
Does anyone else always seem to forget about hard boiled eggs as a great protein-packed snack food? They fell off my radar for a while, but they recently made a come back and I am loving them!

I am a HUGE hard boiled egg fan! I’ve been loving them as a snack with blackberries and blueberries. so yummy 🙂 also those oatmeal walnut date balls looks soo good, I need to make those.
peanutbutterfingers says
If you make them, I hope you love them! I want to play around with the ingredients. I think they could taste delicious with a variety of mix-ins!
Alison says
Julie, can you post instructions on how to make hard boiled eggs? I’m sure it’s super easy but I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know how!
Alicia says
It’s easy! Just turn a burner on high. Fill a pot with hot water from the tap. Put eggs in the water and place on burner. Wait until it’s at a rolling boil then immediately turn heat to Medium. Let them go for 10 mins. Take them out and place into an ice bath immediately. Voila!
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
I love having frozen grapes as a snack on hot days. Hard boiled eggs, carrots with hummus, almonds, and yogurt are my go to snacks.
peanutbutterfingers says
I am feeling ya on the frozen fruit these days. I’ve been snacking on slices of frozen banana after dinner like crazy. So, so good!
Genee says
Every time I go to freeze my bananas they get so brown and unappetizing. Am I doing something wrong?
Susie Miller says
Take the peel off and put them in a ziploc freezer bag!
Amanda says
When I studied on exchange in Spain in summer it got HOT. I used to chop up bananas and strawberries and freeze them, and it was pretty much the only thing I felt like eating!
Lisa says
Definitely a huge fresh fruit and nut fan. I can’t have dairy or eggs so that one’s out of the picture for me. I also love making a “freezer fudge” with coconut oil, almond butter, and some mashed banana or pumpkin. It’s pretty darn tasty. Otherwise, I’ll reach for some veggies and hummus too. Or homemade baked goods, like protein bars.
I definitely rely on them a lot.
peanutbutterfingers says
must try freezer fudge!!!
jules says
You have to try the almond butter fudge and the PB blondies from “the detoxinista”…I literally eat the WHOLE pan….yipes.
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
I’m definitely a Greek yogurt fan. Lately I’ve found myself snacking on granola by the handful. There are so many great ones out there, and I’ve been wanting to experiment with homemade.
Emily says
Going to have to try the almond butter granola! Looks delicious.
Lauren says
I love apricot season because I love slicing them in half, filling them with cottage cheese and a dash of cinnamon. The combination is SO good!
Caitlyn @ City and the Cubicle says
love this! since starting in “the real world” this year, finding healthy, portable and easy breakfast, lunch and snacks that i can whip up & that will keep me going through the 8 hours has been so hard. i’m finally starting to get my act together now!
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny says
I’m definitely addicted to hummus and fresh veggies…and you can’t go wrong with an apple with peanut butter!
Renee @ Fit For Motherhood says
Peanut butter on anything is delicious. I love peanut butter too!
Fruit is always a go to snack for me. I love how it is so satisfying. I have also been into carrots and hummus. Well actually hummus and anything. 🙂
Sarah @ Yogi in Action says
Hard boiled eggs always fall off my radar! And then I eat them again and remember how much I love them.
My main snack is fruit. But that’s because I have an office job where I sit all day- so I don’t need to snack for the calorie burn. Half the time, I snack just cause I’m bored and it gives me something to do 🙂
Megan (The Lyons' Share) says
I love every one of your healthy snacks and will definitely be trying the date balls! Sadly, I travel for work 4 days a week so I have to rely on packaged snacks (since I pack them in my suitcase and don’t have a refrigerator at my client sites). I usually go for seaweed snacks, individual packs of trail mix or almonds, freeze dried fruit/ veggies or natural “fruit snacks” like Matt’s Munchies, or sometimes bars like Quest/ Kind/ Larabars. Thanks for the great ideas!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
awesome options! i love apples because they are so convenient, but paired with some type of nut butter is definitely my favorite!!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I love cottage cheese but since I’m severely lactose intolerant I no longer get to enjoy it, I can’t even do the “lactose free” stuff. 🙁 But I love peanut butter on celery, apples or rice cakes – definitely a favorite!
Emily:2:design:cents says
Hard boiled eggs and banannas with almond butter-though not together:)
Carrie says
I don’t know how you manage it, but you make every single snack on here look mouth-watering…. My favorite has to been chicken and apples- WEIRD combo I know, but its so good! Love the different textures together 🙂
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy says
Hummus! I could eat it with a spoon, and sometimes maybe I do 😉 Eat it with celery, pretzels, whole grain crackers. I usually get roasted red pepper hummus but I love garlic, and cayenne too!

Hard boiled eggs are awesome! I just wish there was a way to peel them more quickly.
Annette@FitnessPerks says

Chelsea says
I love each and every one of these snack ideas! I’m a huge fan of peanut-butter-and-banana toast, veggies with hummus, and apples with peanut butter. I was just wondering – do you have a recipe for granola you love/a store-bought brand that is nutritionally sound? Great post, Julie!
Lexie says
I love all of these… And I’m with you on the cottage cheese, but I’ve never tried cinnamon!! 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
All of these look SO good! I have been LOVING roasted kobucha squash for a snack…weird? I find it to be so fun that I now love vegetables as snacks :).
Ellie@Fit for the soul says
I love all these snacks you mentioned including boiled eggs! Except, I tend to become lazy with boiling them and checking up on them and thus, I don’t eat them as often as I like, haha. I need to change that though~! Honestly, lately I haven’t liked snacks as much as my non-pregnant self because of hormones playing tricks on me, so I usually snack on nuts/nut butters and refreshing fruit like watermelon, pineapple, etc.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Great snack ideas! I, too, often forget about hard boiled eggs. I absolutely love them too. Just these last couple weeks I’ve been better about boiling a bunch for the week. I use them as quick snacks or mash them up for an egg salad sandwich!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
I love having healthy snacks with me at all times. Your snack ideas are great, especially the walnut oatmeal date balls (can’t wait to try them!). Lately, my healthy snacks include a luna bar, fresh veggies with homemade humus or an organic apple with some raw almonds.

It’s fast, healthy, and absolutely yummy!

I’ve been pretty much addicted to baby carrot sticks and love to dip them in hummus or nutbutter, but they’re also great alone. Apple slices with sunbutter is an all time favorite snack. Love all of your ideas and I’m a fellow cottage cheese lover too!!

Nicole says
And now I’m hungry haha
Jess says
I love hard boiled eggs…I just boil 3-4 in the morning and if I get hungry I grab one from the fridge. Or a spoonful of Organic natural peanut butter….it keeps me from getting too hungry.
..I try to think of food a fuel and just eat what I need.
Oh, and your date balls look delish!
Jamie @ Sometimes Healthy Living Blog says
Such a perfect post because I just wrote about my favorite snacks (and tips too!) I’ve really been feeling snap peas and sundried tomatoes lately. I get them from the local market, and they are so fresh and delicious – I don’t even need to dip them anything. But, sometimes I do because I love ketchup and bbq sauce 😉
Elle @ The Clean Project says
I love whole wheat pretzel sticks with goat cheese, baby carrots and homemade protein bars
Ashley says
Ahh now Im hungry! I love granola or apple slices with peanut butter.

Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I like hard boiled eggs too. For some reason I never think of them when it comes to snacks – just meals. I have an awesome granola recipe that I make fairly often. I eat that for a snack too once in awhile.
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
Love all of your snack ideas! I’m a huge snacker myself, so love hearing other people’s favourites. You captured all my favourites above. I also love popcorn, though I need to exercise portion control or I’ll end up eating the whole bag 😉

I’m loving chipotle hummus with carrots. I seriously can’t get enough and my family makes fun of me for it haha
