(Sadie was less than interested.)
In just over an hour, I fell in love with Luna, a sweet whale who was separated from his family and sought out human contact in Nootka Sound, Canada. The footage of Luna was truly incredible. The film touched on his odd behavior, anthropomorphism (the attribution of human characteristics to animals – they called him “lonely” and discussed his desire for “friendship”), the dangers of interacting with whales and Luna’s unshakable desire for human attention. It was an incredible film, but grab a tissue if you decide to watch it!

Workout + Breakfast
This morning began with a 6 a.m. Pure Barre class followed by breakfast!
On the menu for today was a bowl of my hot egg white oatmeal paired with a cup of mocha mint coffee and a sweet clementine.
And now it’s off to work.
Have a fantastic Wednesday!
Question of the Morning
- Do you enjoy documentaries?
- Please recommend any of your favorite “must watch” documentaries!
Yes, we enjoy documentaries. We just watched one on Netflix about Honeybadgers – those things are crazy smart. Next on our list to watch is Burt’s Buzz.
I’m with you, I love nerdy educational movies! There’s a marathon documentary on Netflix but I forget what’s it’s called. Either way, it’s great and you should look into it!
I love watching documentaries! I like a wide range. I loved The Cove, Forks Over Knives, American Meth, Tapped, and Devil’s Playground to name a few! I’ll have to look into some on your list!
I don’t know if it is still on there but you must see Head Games. It’s about all the post-concussion injuries in sports and it’s insane.
You MUST watch the documentary Monica & David on Netflix! It’s about a young couple with Down Syndrome who are getting married. It’s interesting and so sweet and uplifting, I promise you will love it (and them)!
I watched the Business of Being Born before having my baby girl and thought it was super interesting. Although I didn’t agree with all that was said (I had my baby girl in a hospital with an epidural), I DID find the documentary super informative.
I’m ALL about the documentaries on Netflix! Some of my favorites on Netflix include First Position, Jig, (those first two are uplifting films about elite kid dancers!) Elephant in the Living Room (<– grab those tissues again) and The Waiting Room.
You just need to go to Maui in January – boom – whales!!!
I’m also a huge documentary nerd! I love feeling like I’m learning something. I highly recommend Cutie and the Boxer & Jiro Dreams of Sushi (especially if you’re a sushi fan).
And I’m not sure if this is available on Netflix or not (I think it is), but Katie Couric’s documentary Fed Up is really well done and offers an eye-opening look at the state of food production, sugar consumption , and the obesity epidemic – a topic I’m personally super passionate about.
Thanks for the great list!
Add in The Queen of Versailes! Scathing look at conspicuous consumption.
Both the 7 Up series and Exit through the Gift Shop are excellent picks. I have seen few of the others, but these really stand out.
I love the documentary Forks Over Knives. It is very eye opening. I have been reading your blog for some time and figured it was time to say hello. Thank you for all the great food/workout tips and for creatu a blog that exudes positivity!
Jaclyn
Francis Ha is a great Netflix indy movie. A coming of age story about a girl in New York trying to figure out her life, I loved it!
Oh how I miss eggy oats now!! I, the ultimate oatmeal lover, haven’t had it in like 2.5 months. 0_0 And I haven’t watched anything close to a movie/documentary for 1.5 years now, haha! Unless you count Despicable Me2 and Tangled, thanks to our little Selah. 😛
We Watched The Whale last weekend!
I think I saw Hoop Dreams in grade school. Kind of a prerequisite for Chicagoans.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi is excellent. Don’t watch when hungry though!!
I shared this with my mother! We don’t have Netflix in Australia, but she still gets to enjoy all the Netflix fun. http://www.eatallovertheworld.weebly.com
I saw that someone already wrote this, but I wanted to recommend it too… ‘”Dear Zachary” is really a great suspenseful documentary. DON’T read anything about it beforehand!
PS. I couldn’t get into Jiro either haha
I haven’t heard of many of those documentaries – I like history films usually, but “Jiro Dreams of Sushi” is on the top of my list to watch!
Young @ Heart! It’s a group of seniors that sing pop/rock songs (arranged differently, of course). We loved the movie so much we traveled to Cape Cod to see them in concert! So fun!
I HIGHLY recommend Blackfish. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Also, Netflix has great sports documentaries!
I just watched the documentary, Dear Zachary, and it was the most heartbreaking thing I’ve ever seen. I wouldn’t really recommend it, as it was too painful. However, I do recommend The Invisible War. Though it’s also heartbreaking, that documentary has been very instrumental in increasing awareness about the high prevalence of sexual assault in the military. And, while not on Netflix, Escape Fire and Fed Up are also great docs!
I second the Queen of Versailles! Jaw-dropping over-the-top materialism but you just can’t stop watching. I love documentaries and will be bookmarking this list 🙂
New to your blog BTW – saw a pic of a vizsla on bloglovin and knew I HAD to read your post! Mine’s 5.

We really enjoyed Jiro Loves Sushi! What a fascinating life to lead. Even though he spends so much of his time and life worrying about his sushi craft, he inspired me to try and see things a little more simply. And, since we are on the topic of documentaries, my beau and I also really enjoyed the documentary Burn. It’s about the Detroit Fire Department, and while “enjoyed” might sound callous – it was definitely eye-opening!
Best documentaries on Netfilx:
Jiro Dreams of Sushi – If you are a sushi fan, it’s fascinating the dedication that it takes to become the best of the best.
The Short Game – One of the cutest, happiest documentaries ever! World championship for golfers in the 8 and under category. They are crazy talented, determined, and hilariously goofy.
You should watch Somme on Netflix. It makes you think about wine in a whole new way!
I live on Vancouver Island, the region where The Whale was filmed. The sad and scary thing is that orcas our endangered and continue to be threatened further by proposed oil pipelines on our coast.
My old roomie’s folks created The Whale so it was neat to see you post about it. We’re going on a trip to Nootka Sound soon to film a few characters again for a separate project! Cheers 🙂
The pic of Sadie is hilarious, I brought my son Reece as i often do to a local book store yday, they have a cosy area to sit and read the books, we chose one of puppies under water, There were a few of Sadies Breed (spelling?) and I thought of Sadie, so so cute:) Oh documentaries? we never stop although we have the weirdest taste, We are both really into history, mostly military (geeky i know) so spend a lot of time watching those, also ANY to do with wild cats and great whites. Our household is so freaked out by great whites but yet obsessed with any docs on them! I will look out for that one on whales, such stunning animals, I watched one before (more a programme than doc) where the mother was attacked by Killer whales and separated from the calf, she fought them of for hours and in the end managed to push them away:) sniff okay i best stop nowxx
I watched “I am Santa Claus” last night on Netflix that is a documentary about 4 Santas and their lives when its not Christmas. Really funny and heart-warming. Definitely recommend!
My fiancé and I loved the documentary Happy People! Such an interesting look at how it doesn’t take much to be happy 🙂
I love watching documentaries also! One of the first ones I watched after getting netflix was Tapped, about the bottled water industry. It completely changed the way I look at water and I almost never drink bottled water now.
It’s amazing what a little free knowledge can do 🙂
My family loves documentaries, as well. The documentary Ballerina (on Netflix) about dancers in the Russian Ballet was very interesting. I don’t know if Ryan would like it, 😉 but my daughter and I loved it.
