I am so glad you guys are as excited about this morning’s giveaway as I am! I can’t believe we’re already at 1,000+ entries. Amazing.
New Nikes
Around lunchtime today, I took a break to run to Sports Authority to hopefully pick up a new pair of my favorite running shoes since I’m getting into longer runs again as I train for the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon.
Sadly Sports Authority doesn’t carry my specific shoe, so I was out of luck.
I didn’t leave empty handed though!
I finally found a pair of shoes to wear to the gym on days when I focus on strength training.
(I had a gift card so they were free. Score!)
I’ve been wearing the same pair of running shoes for both running and weight training ever since last June when I bought them and figured my new running shoes will last longer if I save them for only running (once I actually buy them, of course).
Sadie thinks the hot pink is ridiculous.
She’s all about au natural running.
The shoes are super comfortable thanks to the plush Nike Comfort Footbed.
Lunch
Once I arrived home from my little errand, I fixed myself a fast lunch that included a smoothie and a toasted English muffin, topped with a bit of butter.
I actually meant to make the smoothie thin enough to slurp out of a straw, but it came out pretty thick, so it became a smoothie bowl, topped with chia seeds.
In the mix:
- 1 1/2 frozen bananas
- 1 heaping scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons creamy peanut butter
- 1 cup 2 percent milk
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 large handful fresh spinach
Inhaled!
Question of the Afternoon
- Are you loyal to a specific brand when it comes to gym shoes?
- Do you wear different gym shoes for cardio and strength training?
I am very, very loyal to Mizuno when it comes to running shoes. They’ve been fantastic running shoes and have carried me through two half marathons with minimal blisters. As far as weight training, I pick shoes based on how snazzy they look.
RunEatRepeat says
Super loyal to asics and adidas. Well, until I got a free pair of Brooks. Free > loyalty.
Claire says
Wow I am a computer junkie today…must.pry.myself.away.! I am also getting new shoes today…I jammed a HOLE through the front of my running shoes! Ouch!
I am really loyal to Adidas but am gonna try a switch to Nike I think. I hear they are super light! I don’t wear a different shoe for cardio or weights, I don’t lift more than my body weight though (trust me it’s enough…haha)!
Happy Friday! Oh, and you should check out my Fun Fact Friday Video: http://www.navigatingnorth.com/2011/09/fun-fact-fridaytotally-truthful.html
You need to do one too!
xoxo
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
always change between running and cross. Rykas for cross training Brooks for running. Ravennas to be exact. Although I am often X training at home with a three year old and an akita, so we are barefoot all the way!!!
Meg says
Yes! I have shoes for running, Pear Izumi which are crazy pricey so you can bet I only use them for serious runs. And shoes for weight training, Brooks (which I LOVE and can also be used for light running).
Faith @ For the Health of It says
Yep, I’m a Asics girl through and through! I don’t know if there’s a better brand for my feet, but these are what I’ve worn ever since I started running (not the same pair, of course!) and they’ve never done me wrong, so that’s enough for me!
Karina says
Mizunos for running, definitely!:)
forloveofcarrots says
I am an asic lover all the way, I can’t buy anything else!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Love those shoes!! I like Nikes and Asics, although my favorite workout wear is Lululemon. If only it didn’t cost a fortune! ;p
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
I have the same pair of Mizunos that you do! Lovelovelove them so much
Shannon says
Loving your new shoes! The look awesome! 🙂
Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee says
I used to wear the Mizuno Wave Rider 13s until they “upgraded” to the 14s. It’s definitely a different shoe, so you might want to get refitted. Hopefully the 14 works for you though!
I’m not loyal when it comes to shoes. 🙂 One a new version comes out, I try to get refitted because the new version isnt always better (learned that the hard way during marathon training). I’ve been in Asics, Mizunos, Newtons, and now Sauconys which I’m loving a lot!
Your strength training shoes are super cute!! I dont strength train at a gym but if I did, I’d want really fun shoes!
peanutbutterfingers says
really? that’s great to know b/c i was about to order them online! thanks for the head’s up.
Lisa S says
I’m all about Nike air for running shoes. They are super light, and I got my first pair of them when I was in high school. They helped me kick butt at track practice 🙂
Brittany says
I just like shoes that are comfortable! I have Brooks Adrenaline for running and I LOVE them. I actually use them for strength too because I usually do cardio on strength days as well so I wear them all the time.
Ally says
I just got my first pair of Mizunos and I love them for running so far! I’ve only had them a couple weeks but no complaints so far.
For strength training I typically use Nike’s.. I just got a pair of Nike minimalist at Dillards on sale for $60 (down from $100ish) that are bright blue. I’ll probably put neon green laces on them when I find some. Brighter the better in my opinion 😉
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I am an Asics lover. However.. I recently bought a pair of Ryka shoes because.. well.. I liked the purple and silver design. They don’t suit me well on long runs – but they are fine for cross trainingand lifting!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oooh your smoothie looks so rich and decadent! I’m a loyal Asics girl – I won’t run in anything else! Usually I do my strength training in my Asics too, just because I go from the treadmill to the weights section of my gym, but sometimes I wear others (especially if I’m really trying to make my Asics last a long time!)
Erinn says
What is the name of the shoes? I really want a pair, but I don’t know the name.
Dawn @ Blonde on a Mission says
LOVE the pink runners. I have a pair too 🙂
I was just wondering… and forgive me if this has been brought up already, but do you still use xanthan gum as a thickener in smoothies?
Jillian @ sprinkle massacre says
I’ve recently fallen in love with Brooks. I hear that it is good to have a seperate pair of shoes for running vs. strength training days so you don’t wear out your running shoes. I intend to buy a new pair of running shoes and just use my old Brooks for lifting days…
Maddie says
I am all about Asics for running, but that’s because that’s what I was fitted in about 4 years ago at the running store and I’ve never looked back. I also just got another pair of kicks for the gym/weight training stuff. I went with some gray and pink Pumas for the pure fact that they were light and I LOVE the colors. Obviously it’s the best way to pick out shoes 🙂
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
I love my Asics too! I’d definitely consider branching out, though, especially if I had a gift card–I’ve had so much trouble with my feet/ankles/tendons as a runner that proper support is really my #1 priority.
Alysha @ She's on the Run says
I’m in love with Brook’s Adrenaline – i have two pairs so i wear my newer ones for only running and the older ones are for the gym. I was fitted for them at a specialty running store. i don’t think i could ever buy running shoes on my own again! (unless I bought the same ones i already had).
Love the pink!
Hope says
Cute shoes! I’ve been wearing Asics. 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
Amen to everything you said about shoes. Mizunos for running. Anything cute for weight training and other workouts. 🙂
Megan says
Those Nike’s are insanely cute! I love the grey.. it reminds me of a comfy sweatshirt.
Lindsey says
Love the new shoes 🙂 I just bought a pair of Nike 3.0 Frees to wear for my shorter runs and weight training. I usually wear Mizuno Wave Riders for running and training but was finding on non running days I feet wanted something different so I bought a second pair and alternate now. So far I love it!
Nicole says
I am super loyal to my Nike Moto’s, to the point where I buy them two at a time at the outlet and just store them till I need them. I rotate a blue pair and a red pair. And for strength or elliptical, I use an old pair that is no longer in the running rotation. But I have been considering trying a pair of Brooks.

Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs says
I am totally in love with my new Brooks running shoes. They are fantastic! It was really hard for me to move on from my old ones that I was totally in love with, but it was worth it.
Molly says
I bought Nike Free’s 3 weeks ago for weight training and treadmill intervals and am obsessed! They form to my feet perfectly. I think I’ll stick with them for awhile.
Sweet and Savvy says
Those are so cute! I’m in search of new tennis shoes!
Rachel @ Runner's Tales says
I just bought a new pair of running shoes too. I bought a pair of Nike Free 3.0 and I really love them. They are super lightweight and really move with my feet. I used to have a pair of Nike Zooms but they don’t make those shoes anymore.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I usually go for Asics when it comes to running, and Nikes when it comes to looks and/or weight training. Your new shoes are so cute! Love them!
Lena says
I absolutely LOVE the Nike Free TR Fit for general training/lifting shoes. They’re so ridiculously lightweight and minimal. Plus, they make them in a ton of snazzy color combos 😉
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I definitely have TWO different pairs. It is MY JOB to have ’em (I teach BodyPUMP, Zumba, and a myriad of other classes). My feet hurt if I wear the same shoe all the time. My husband doesn’t love this….but i say it is a business expense! (I do fitness coaching as well on the side). So good choice on choosing another pair, Julie!
I am such a fan of smoothies…but it is hard to crave ’em when it’s cold outside! Brrrrr.
Tichina says
I actually have never used different shoes for running and strength training.. just use the same pair 🙂 maaaa gym shoes:) Very good idea though. I’m a huge fan of Asics sneakers. They have different “levels” of support depending on how much you need/ how much you wanna break the bank!
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
I kind of jump around on the shoes. I seem to always get injured so I always blame it on the shoes! Haha. Love the pink Nikes! 🙂
Khushboo says
Love how bright your new shoes are- SO fun! I stick with Asics for running shoes! I’m on my 3rd pair and only have great things to say about them! I am however curious to try out those trainers which mimic being barefoot!
peanutbutterfingers says
agreed! those intrigue me, too.
Katie says
I can’t belive there aren’t any VIBRAM fans out there! When I first started “running” (I use the term loosely) I was wearing a standard pair of New Balances. I started to have terrible ankle pain and soreness, so thought “I better get some supportive shoes!” I can’t remember what I bought, but that didn’t help at all.
I then went to Philadelphia Runner here in Center City and they analyzed my stride and looked at my feet and told me that I didn’t need all that fancy crap! I bought a pair of Vibram Five Fingers and I flyyyyyyyy 🙂
Julia says
AGREED! Love my Vibrams! Best $100 ever spent.
beth says
ditto! i love running in my vibrams also! cured so many foot problems i used to have in my asics!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
I am super loyal to Asics, since I know they work for me. 🙂 I’ve been wanting to take some Brooks on a long run just to test how they fit me, though… if I buy them from the running store, I can take them back if I don’t like them after a few runs. Scooore.
I have three pairs of Asics I’m rotating between for marathon training (did you know it takes the foot bed over 24 hours to raise back up after all the pounding your heal does on them? CRAZY!), but I don’t typically have a pair *just* for lifting.
Cait @ Cait hates Cake says
LOVE your new shoes!! I have hot pink Nikes, too! I go with Nike for my gym shoes (cross trainers), but I go with some other brand for my running shoes (I don’t even know what they are, some shoe Fleet Feet told me to buy).
chelsea says
Loyal Nike! My running shoes are suppper super bright as well =D I used to have specific shoes but not anymore. I really need some though!
dana says
Mizuno all the way! I have one pair of Saucony minimalist shoes. Although most swear by them, I’m not a huge fan. I love my Mizuno Wave Riders.
sunshine says
I am a BIG fan of Saucony running shoes. I’ve bought the same shoe model since I first discovered it almost 3 years ago!(Omni)
I don’t wear any shoes at all when I weight train. I work out at home though. When I was working out in a gym, I would wear flat “skater” style shoes. I was always advised not to lift in running shoes because the cushion of the shoe makes your feet unsafely unstable. The way the cushion/support of running shoes is structured also slightly elevates the heel, which is also apparently something you don’t want when you weight train.
stacey says
Love that HOT pink! haha I love Brooks Glycerin, they rock for running. I’m going to also purchase my first pair of Vibram’s. On another note, I only like Nike Zoom. Anywho, I noticed you used 2% milk, I just read an article last week that was titled “Is skim milk making you fat?” hmm….
Mac says
Love the new pink color! I have a pair of shoes specifically for running. I usually wear my old running shoes as my lifting/other things shoes.
Kari Burghardt says
It’s hard to switch brands once you find a running shoe that seems to work for you. I have been in love with Asics Nimbus for the past 3 years. They got me through my first marathon and they are amazing!! 🙂
~Kari
Rebecca @ Miss Magnolia Muches & Moves says
Love the nikes! They are cute! I wear different shoes for running and weight training.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Right now I use the same shoes for running & lifting. I really need to get a pair just for lifting. I’m super loyal to Asics. They’ve never given me blisters or any other problems and last about 400-500 miles for me 🙂
Mary says
Cute new shoes! I’m not a hard-core runner (but some day I dream of being one) but when I do make it to work out I wear Asics. They fit me like a glove and make my feet feel amazing! I’m interested in trying the Five Fingers shoes someday though 🙂
Kristine @ Running on Hungry says
Love the shoes! (And Sports Authority! My favorite place to buy workout stuff!)
PS- I was in Hawaii on vacation the last couple of weeks and went to Tommy Bahama restaurant for dinner/drinks… and they had the BEST Cucumber cocktail – the “Cucumber Smash” and I thought of your love for all things cucumber cocktails! It was muddled cucumber, St Germaine, and elderflower. Most of their locations are in FL – so if you’re ever near one – stop in for a cocktail – it was SO tasty and refreshing!
peanutbutterfingers says
JEALOUS!!
LeeAnn says
I ONLY run in my running shoes…I love Saucony ProGrid Rides…started with the 3 and am in love with the 4s that I just got to finish off training and then run my marathon in. They rock my world.
I dont think I will ever stray from the Brook’s Cascadias for trail running-they are the best!!
Love the pink 🙂
