Flashback: New Year’s Eve 2011 in Orlando
Flashback: New Year’s Eve 2008 in Chicago (<—Lesson learned on this trip: Do not book a flight on New Year’s Day after a night out on NYE. Miserable.)
Ryan and I will be heading to our friends’ house for a party with dinner and drinks and I’m really looking forward to a fun night out! I’m not a big fan of the downtown/bar scene on New Year’s Eve (not at all), so a house party suits me perfectly and I’m excited!
Workout
This morning my day began with an early workout. When the alarm went off I really wasn’t feeling it and was so tempted to stay curled up under the warm blankets, but since I registered for the 6 a.m. Pure Barre class last night, that motivated me to get out of bed and head off to the studio.
My particular studio requires you to cancel a class you’ve registered for two hours ahead of time to give others the chance to go (or fees may apply), so as you can imagine, this policy definitely keeps our 6 a.m. group accountable because no one is waking up at 4 a.m. to cancel their reservation.
In the end, I was glad I made it to the class, as today’s instructor brought the heat and definitely made me feel the burn!
Breakfast
Once I arrived home, I was more than ready for breakfast. I fixed myself a repeat of yesterday’s morning meal, paired with a white peach and a cup of eggnog coffee I recently received from my blogging buddy Tina!
Tina knows I have an intense love for her local Marylou’s Coffee and sent me a bag for Christmas. Yum!
Time to head off to work. Have a great day and Happy New Year!
Questions of the Morning
- Do you enjoy the party scene on New Year’s Eve or do you prefer to lay low?
- Tell me about your most memorable NYE!
- What are your NYE plans this year?
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
Happy NYE!! My friends and I are doing a black tie house party. I can’t wait! Although I do wish I didn’t have a broken tailbone for the festivities. 😉
Julie says
that sounds like SO much fun!! so sorry to hear about your tailbone though 🙁 🙁 — sending lots of healing wishes your way, erin! <3
Amanda says
My NYE sounds similar to yours – small get together at my sister in-laws. The night is centered around a few friends, delicious food, fancy cocktails, and Cards Against Humanity.
Fun NYE story, when I was 16 my parents let me have a huge party. At 11:57 my boyfriend started to stick close to me. I did everything I could ( including take the trash out and hide in the pantry “looking for napkins”) to be as busy as possible from 11:57 until 12:30 – no way was my first kiss going to be in front of 20+ friends. And yes, I was 16.
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Happy NYE! I prefer celebations that aren’t part of the downtown/bar scene either. We are planning to either go to dinner and a movie or a low-key festival in downtown Austin. The fireworks are at 10pm so we think it will not be a crazy night! Have fun!
Ashley says
I soooo much prefer house parties for NYE! This year we’re having a few friends over and then walking downtown to a bar… not my fav activity but oh well, it’ll make my bf happy, haha! Hope you have an awesome NYE!
Stephanie says
The last 2 years, I’ve slept through the new year (both of my kids were babies around the time). This year, I’ll try and stay up with my hubby but me, hubs, and our son are all sick. Another year were we’ll try but we’ll probably fall asleep early.
Julie says
hope you feel better soon!!!
Alex @ get big, go to work says
A house party sounds like a perfect entrance into the new year! I prefer a low-key New Years too. We are traveling home from PA today after a week and a half celebrating the holidays with different family members. Our evening is going to be very low-key tonight. I see a take-out and movie in our future!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
Now a days I am more into house parties and ringing in the year with friends or family. I can say though that while in college I loved the bar scene. I’m glad I tried it but my priorities have changed as I’ve gotten older.
Angela says
Happy New Year! I’m with you on house parties. That way if you drink too much you can just spend the night.
PS- I felt super immature typing the above statement. Oh well.
Bethany says
I love staying home in fuzzy warm PJ’s and going to bed early 🙂 I am so old!!!
Angela @ HonestlyAngela says
Happy nye! My gym has the same policy with childcare. I have to cancel at least 2 hours before or pay a few. It has helped me to stay accountable to working out since I’ve had my little one!
Emily says
I definitely made that flying on New Year’s Day mistake about 2 years ago. Partied all night in downtown ATL and then my friend and I had to get up by 6:45 to get me to the airport for my flight at 9:15. Worst mistake EVER! lol Enjoy your New Year’s. I’ll also be doing the same- dinner & drinks with friends in their first/new house!
Julie says
i feel your pain! i’ve done it TWICE. you think after on time i would learn my lesson… so, so miserable!
Megan @ Skinny Fitalicious says
I definitely prefer low key. Celebrating NYE is more fun when it’s in an intimate setting. Hope you have a great time with your friends. Happy NYE!
Sky @ Blonde Freedom says
My NYE plans got a little messed up due to some bad weather!! I planned to go out with my friends, but now I’ll at home with my family. Last year, I was passed out in my friends bedroom by 9. We went a little too hard right out the gate to say the least haha so I’ll be happy to make it to midnight this year. Hope you and Ryan have a great New Years Eve!!
Kelsey C. says
I’m jealous of your 2 hours cancellation policy! My barre studio has a 12 hour cancellation policy and it seriously kills me!
I’m with you on the bar scene on NYE, I always try to stay away! We usually go on a trip to the bowl game but this year we did not so it’s a very low key one for us too!
Christina M says
Eggnog coffee?? I would gladly cancel any NYE plans to stay curled in bed with that!! 🙂
It’s a house party for me and my BF tonight too! We are going to my best friend from high school’s house.. in previous years we’ve down the downtown big NYE party thing. The first year it was actually a lot of fun, but last year.. not the best. So house party it is! 🙂 🙂 I don’t have a favorite moment… I think I just love being surrounded by people I love.
Our barre studio is pretty lenient – luckily! I rarely cancel a class and not go at all, but sometimes when I sign up for the noon class, my boss likes to call me at exactly 12 and request five million things, so I’ve literally walked into the studio – told the owner I couldn’t come to class and walked back out… at 11:58! 🙁 They are pretty chill there… 🙂
Chrissy @ Pink Polish and Running Shoes says
I’m also headed to a house part with my boyfriend tonight. I would much rather be there than at the bars. It’s always crazy and packed anywhere you go NYE.
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Happy New Year’s Eve, my friend! Jealous of your Marylou’s 😉
Julie says
happy nye to you, too!! <3 <3 miss you!!
Kate @ Endorphin Junkie says
My husband and I are definitely not bar people on NYE. We’re actually going to a game night at one of my friends house tonight, so that should be fun 🙂
Nicole @ Squash on Squash says
Sounds like a good time! To be honest, I think that New years eve is pretty overrated…This year I’m flying all NYE and have a feeling I’ll be way too gross and tired to want to do anything by the time I land. I have to say that my most memorable NYE’s were those when I was about 8-11 and would go to my grandparents house, watch movies, and eat cinnamon toast while they played card games with their friends. Tonight might actually end up being that kind of night! 🙂
Stacie@SimplySouthernStacie says
Oh shoot, I have a flight booked for tomorrow. Thankfully, it is after noon. And I will be spending NYE with family versus going out, so hopefully I will be all good tomorrow! haha. Hope y’all have a great and safe NYE!
Julie says
ha! be prepared for some rough-looking people on your flight tomorrow. 🙂
kelsierakay says
We are doing a girls night in – wearing Onesie’s 🙂 We aren’t a fan on the downtown scene either, so a night in playing games is right up my alley. Then we decided we are going to go to brunch somewhere in our Onesie’s in the morning haha
Natalie @ The Ravenous Mommy says
Ever since my son was born, we have the most boring NYE! I’ll probably be in bed by 10 😉
Kristen @ Glitter and Dust says
I’ve done both the party scene and the lay-low scene on NYE. Last year my husband and I went on a long snowy hike and watched the sun set –celebrating out NYE outside and with Mother Nature. The year before we did the party scene and rented a condo with a few of our friends, celebrating by getting dressed up and heading out to a NYE party. This year we will be getting dressed up and celebrating with friends. Hopefully. My husband has been fighting off a cold and seems to be experiencing the worst of it this morning. Praying that he will feel better by this evening!
Have a wonderful NYE Julie, Ryan, and Sadie!
Christa @ Living Unbalanced says
House party > Bar scene…ALWAYS! Our CrossFit classes work the same way…if you sign up and don’t show up, you waste a credit so it’s definitely motivation to get my butt to the class in the morning!
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
We’re having a NYE housewarming party! We’ve been running around like crazy people trying to get the house ready, but it’s forced us to make some major progress. Have a wonderful time 🙂
Stephanie says
My roommate and I are hosting our last party of the year at our apartment with slow cooker chili, appetizers, desserts, and a champagne-blood orange punch. Just have to push through these last few hours of work… so excited! Happy New Year!
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
We’re definitely laying low this year, just a small party with a group of friends! Easy peasy! Happy New Year!!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Happy New Years Eve, Julie!! Enjoy your evening – sounds perfect to me. I’m with you…a get together or party at a house definitely trumps a night out on the town on NYE!
Amy @ Run with Perseverance says
Most memorable NYE was spending it in New York and getting to see the ball drop from my brother-in-law’s apartment! No waiting in Times Square all day for this girl!
My landlord (who lives next door) throws a big party each NYE, so we’re going to that. We went last year and had a BLAST, so I expect nothing less tonight!
Les @ The Balanced Berry says
Happy New Year Julie! In years past I loved a good party, but this year I’m opting for a more low-key night with friends and hoping to get to bed early so I can feel refreshed tomorrow. Is this what getting old feels like? 😉
Beks says
My sister said she was going to try to make me go out tonight, but I’ve had the last two weeks from hell, am super tired from major overtime, and would much rather stay home, making my dad watch “When Harry Met Sally…” (It’s TOTALLY a NYE movie!). That’s my plan, and after talking to my sister the last few days, sounds like she’d rather be partying at home with me. 😉
Leslie @ Life Begins at 30? says
I’m definitely with you on the low key NYE. Each year we go to someone’s house for a party and we rotate who hosts so it is fair and fun!
aladygoeswest says
Hi Julie! Happy NYE to you. My husband and I have been visiting Orlando (by way of San Francisco) for the past two years on NYE to finish up our holiday travel and we’ve always flown out on New Years Day. It’s always rough, but definitely cost effective hehehe. Hope you have a good one! This year, we’re staying put in SF.
Kaci @ Running the Next Step says
That’s the only reason I went to my workout class this morning too! I didn’t feel like going but I didn’t want to lose one of my classes either. I’m glad they do it that way because I”m always so glad that I go! Happy New Year’s Eve! No big plans here, just drinks at home with the boyfriend 🙂
laceyzaiser says
Happy New Years! I’ve never been too into the party scene, although I had a few memorable NYE’s in college, this year I’m looking forward to catching up with some friends, making a nice dinner and maybe a few glasses of champagne 🙂
Becky says
I am definitely a lay-low kind of person, though I have had a couple of fun NYEs out at a place that does 80’s music videos the whole night!
Tonight will be a few friends, some drinks and a bonfire 🙂
slimsanity says
We are usually in a party scene, but this year we are laying low! A small get together at a friend’s place just down the road 🙂
Janet Pole says
Movie night at home …. bad movies, great food.
Lizzie S. says
Ugh, the bar scene in Chicago on NYE is the. worst. I think a house party is the best option for the holiday. This is actually my first year staying in, like ever! We are going to an afternoon movie then enjoying a home cooked meal for dinner. We’ll see if I can even stay up to watch the ball drop 🙂 Happy New Years to you guys!
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
I haven’t wanted to go out in a couple years, especially since I stopped drinking. I much prefer to sit on the couch and be comfortable than parading all around the city. It’s also like 8 degrees here, so the longer I can stay in and be warm the better!
Have a great time tonight!
Marielle says
Your hair looks so pretty in that first pic, like always!! Jealous! I just got back from my Pure Barre class too, always feels great once I get there 🙂 My hubby and I are just heading over to a friends house tonight, should be fun and low key…just the way I like it! Happy New Years to you!
Kristen @ Vitamin K Girl says
Happy New Year’s! My husband and I have dinner reservations at 5pm because that’s all that was available at our favorite restaurant..haha! However, with a baby on the way I guess we need to get used to the early bird special;-)
Mary says
happy new year! I hope you have a great time tonight.
Mattie @ Comfy & Confident says
Happy NYE! I am not one for the bar scene on big nights like tonight either. I plan on going to a familly party and laying low. I hope I stay up until midnight!
Michelle Hunt (@PeachyPalate) says
Just in from work, almost 10pm, in my PJS…I’ll be in bed by 12.10!
Annette Perkins (@FitnessPerks) says
Happy NYE! Have fun with friends!
We’re going to a house party too, one that is kid friendly, so it’ll be fun for all of us, which I’m so excited about!
Nona @ RunningHigh says
Happy New Years! Have a blast at your party! We’ve gotten a foot of snow already today, so a quiet evening is on the agenda for tonight! We’ve got a bottle of champagne to enjoy by the fire! 🙂
Sally says
I prefer a low key house party with friends and family, but this year I am working. I’m a 911 Operator/Dispatcher, so the evening will definitely keep me on my toes!! I hope everyone has a safe and fun New Years Eve!!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
I love having friends over for NYE! All the fun, but I don’t have to travel or freeze outside!!!
Kim says
Since I’m reading your blog on NYE, I’m definitely a stay-at-home New Year’s celebrator. This year, it’s me, my husband, and our DVD player. Woo hoo! And last year we watched House of Cards on Netflix. I’ve just gotten to the point where I want to RELAX and not worry about hair, make-up, or people on the road.
HOWEVER, prior to recent years, I was a go-big-and-go-wild NYE celebrator, and I was the one who planned the festivities for all my friends. One year we went to a HUGE black tie gala at a hotel. Suits, long evening gowns, a sit down dinner, and a big balloon and confetti drop at midnight. And we’ve had big, game-night, pot luck get-togethers at each other’s houses too (complete with invitations and strong urges for homemade food.) My best guy bff (he was even on my side in my wedding!) has a birthday today, so a lot of times it’s a combo NYE celebration/birthday party.
But no matter what, I always have fun! And vacation days. 🙂
Happy New Year! Thanks for giving us consistently entertaining posts and for sharing your vibrant life with us. 🙂 Very inspirational AND aspirational.
