Nothing Makes Sense Any More

March 2, 2011 by Julie 36 Comments

Check out this little nugget of information I came across on PeanutButterLovers.com today:

Peanuts are not actually nuts at all! They are legumes, like beans, peas and lentils.

What!?

Nothing makes sense any more.

I’m so confused.

Sorry Jules…a “nut” is a specific type of fruit, and these would be your “tree nuts” like almonds, walnuts, cashews, chestnuts, beechnuts, horsechestnuts, acorns, hickories, and the like.

The “nuts” which are legumes (and if they’re a legume, they aren’t a true nut) are peanuts.

I know that, but they’re nuts to me. All this crazy food classification is confusing – tomatoes are fruits, peanuts are legumes, quinoa is a seed (not a grain). I just know it’s all yummy!

Wow, I had no idea!! That seems so weird because peanuts are usually the first thing that comes to mind when I think of “nuts”. I still count them in the nut category!! 🙂

That is why certain individuals who are allergic to nuts can eat peanuts! (Not always the case, though).

Yes, I did know that 😉 But I guess my love for almond butter is stronger, so I never really cared if it was a legume or a nut, haha! I hope your world isn’t turned upside down too much, Julie!

Yep, peanuts aren’t like other nuts and I’m SO GLAD because I’m allergic to “tree nuts”. Peanuts are the only kind of nut I can have! They can still be a nut even if they grow in the ground and I accept them gladly. 🙂
