Number of Race Miles = Days of Recovery

November 22, 2011 by Julie 50 Comments

This morning at the gym I read something interesting in Runner’s World.

The magazine said that after a race, runners should take it easy for the number of days that correspond to the number of miles in their race. For example, half marathoners should take it easy for 13 days following their race.

I’m assuming this applies to races run hard, as I’d think that a race run at a leisurely pace wouldn’t need as much recovery time.

I read this excerpt while doing light cardio on the adaptive motion trainer and am taking it to heart. My quads are still pretty darn sore from the Women’s Half Marathon and I have a feeling I won’t be running hard for a good week or so.

(If you’d like lessons on how to look like a complete goober in race photos, please email me. I’ll give you a good price.)

For Thursday’s Turkey Trot, my plan is to simply run for fun and have a great time.

Speaking of the Turkey Trot, I’m headed to St. Pete today and will be assembling Turkey Trot costumes with my sister this evening.

Items currently purchased:

  • Feathers
  • Boas
  • Paint
  • Knee Socks
  • Clothing dye
  • Plain white hats
  • Googly eyes

Things are about to get interesting!

Breakfast

Breakfast this morning was supposed to include cheese. Apparently in my quest for anything salty yesterday, I ate it all and was left cheeseless this morning.

Luckily I had some olive tapenade Tibe hummus on hand and used that in place of cheese on my breakfast sandwich.

My two eggs did a good job of hiding the top half of my whole wheat English muffin that I basically finished before toasting anyway due to my odd English muffin habit.

Hope your day is off to a good start!

Hummus is so great on breakfast sandwiches. Especially if you put feta in the eggs 😀

I’m considering a Turkey Trot, I want to dress as syphilis in honor of what we REALLY gave the Native Americans, but I can’t picture the costume. JUST KIDDING! I’m going as a turkey.

I think that some might take the “recovery” a little too far. I took one day off after my half and then did other non-running activities for a few more days. My first real run was a week later, although I did try before that. It just didn’t feel right. So for me, it doesn’t mean sit on the couch and do nothing. I do other things.

Sounds like you’ve got an interesting costume coming up! For the whole rest and race mileage thing, I have sort of followed it in the past, but taking 26 days off after a marathon seemed a bit much for me! I tend to go easier (as in no HIIT or intervals) for the week following, but after that, do what my body feels it can do. It again, may not be anything crazy, but if I’m feeling good, you can bet I’ll be running again! Have a great day Julie!

I am a huge fan of the Dartmouth Aires! They’re just so energetic and fun. Their Queen performance is my favorite of the season so far.

I’m definitely breaking the Runner’s World recovery rule. I ran a marathon 9 days ago and I’m racing a Turkey Trot on Thursday and I’m running RnR Las Vegas. Oops!

I definitely think the amount of recovery time needed is personal to every person, but sometimes you do need a good long break. That’s at least my plan after my brutal marathon yesterday.
And that hummus looks delicious with eggs!

If I was that sore, I’d take it easy too! I’m sure it depends on how sore you are after the race though. Those songs are awesome. I don’t watch that show but I really enjoyed watching those performances just now! I’m running a Turkey Trot for fun too. It’s only a 5k though, so it’ll be a quick one!

I don’t think I could go 13 days without running. I ran my first Half on Sunday, and I rested one day. 🙂 I guess I’m a glutton for punishment. I was back out there this morning, sore legs and all.

Have to start Full Marathon training! No rest for me!

My quads are killing me today after Sunday’s race and that article is making me worry considering I just literally purchased the entry into the Palm Beach half on Dec. 4th! Eek! Hopefully the almost 2 weeks will be enough time to recuperate because I have big plans for that (flat) race. 🙂

    Hi ,

I’d like to ask what a typical morning snack for you is like (for example this morning, or yesterdy morning, etc). I’m struggling with midmorning snack ideas.

I’ve been eating a lot of grains lately and I’m thinking I should cut back maybe? (I’m not a runner or cardio person other than walking).

I tried to make a single-serving oatmeal muffin recipe this morning that turned out “just okay”. I used 20 g (3 tablespoons ) of oat flour, 1/2 tablespoon of oil, and 1/4 cup egg beaters, and a mini-box of raisins.
A bit weird? I know, I know. I got curious and didn’t want to dump it out, so it was okay, but not quite right.
