I had a lunch meeting early this afternoon with one of my local freelance clients. We met up at Earth Origins, a local health food store, and ate at the little tables set up inside the market.
The salad bar intrigued me, but a wrap sounded better, so I bought a tuna salad wrap from the prepared foods section to eat.
It was a great choice!
I typically steer clear of store-bought tuna salad because I don’t really love mayonnaise (I’m a Miracle Whip girl – don’t hate) and feel like many store-bought versions of tuna salad overuse mayo which creeps me out. This version had just the right amount of mayonnaise and incorporated some unexpected Asian spices that I liked a lot!
After lunch, the two of us walked next door to grab cookies at Betty Cakes.
My cookie was packed with chocolate chips and pecans! Fantastic!
Obstacle Course Races
During lunch, our conversation strayed from work-related talk to an obstacle course race that’s coming to Ocala. Last night I attended a meeting for the Junior League of Ocala and a bunch of the women are forming a team for the same race. Ryan’s work also has a team. Apparently it’s going to be quite popular!
The Hero Rush obstacle course 5K race is coming to Ocala on November 3 and sounds like a blast!
According to the website, the Hero Rush is “a challenging, tough, heroic and fun 5K+ race with 17+ totally unique firefighter and hero-themed obstacles, entertainment, food, drink, kid’s races and more.”
(Source)
I’ve heard a lot about obstacle races, mud races, color runs and more and they all intrigue me and sound like so much fun!
The Color Run, in particular, sounds like a blast! During a 5K race, each kilometer of the event is associated with a designated color. As runners pass through each color zone, they are splattered in color and cross the finish line looking like a rainbow!
(Source – Can we take a moment to recognize the two hilarious guys in the background of this picture!?)
The Color run is coming to St. Pete and Orlando in December and my sister and I are thinking about signing up for the St. Pete race if we have that weekend free. Doesn’t it look like fun!?
Questions of the Afternoon
- Have you ever done an obstacle course race, a mud run or The Color Run? Would you want to?
Ariana says
DO THE COLOR RUN!!!!!!!!!! I just did it in Indianapolis back in July and it was a BLAST! It was my first 5k and I had a ton of fun.
Do it! You will definitely not regret it 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
oooh this makes me want to do it even more! it looks like such a good time!
Ariana says
It is. Mind if I repeat myself?? Do it. Do it, Julie!!! And it would be great to do with your sister! Definitely not about time, just about fun! I live in Chicago and missed signing up for that one and drove 2.5 hours just to participate in one this year! SO worth time and money!
Khushboo says
You gotta do the color run!!! It looks SO fun 🙂
Shawna Vite says
I did the Color Run this past August and it was a blast! Such a fun time and it was great to do it with friends. Definitely recommended. There is also another race called the Warrior Dash which seems like a lot of fun as well and something that is on my list for the future.
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
I would love to do a race like one of these! Working out and staying fit should always be fun!=)
Niki says
I did my first Warrior Dash in April, which was also my first race that I competed in. I am doing my second Warrior in October and my first half marathon in November. The Zombie runs also look like a blast!
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ve never heard of zombie runs! i’ll have to check them out!
Lauren says
I did a zombie run a couple weeks ago and it is amazingggg!!! it was a 5k and it took my friends and me about 1.5 hours to finish LOL but just so so fun!!!
Simone says
I did the spartan race with my sister and 2 friends a few months ago and it was awesome! it was only a 5 km race but we had to crawl through mud pits, climb over walls, jump over fire trenches etc., I had a few friends do the colour me rad run and they loved it!
Amanda says
My sister and I JUST signed up for the color run in Memphis! I am so excited! It looks like a blast.
Sabrina says
I am doing Run for Your Lives (zombie run) in Orlando in November and the St. Pete Color run in December! I am hoping for a good time a minimal injuries! 🙂
A says
The Color Run was SO much fun! I did it with my sister and we had a great time 🙂 It’s definitely a “fun run” (so lots of walkers and it isn’t even timed) but it’s still a cool way to do something active.
Side note: it takes forever to wash the color off of you but it’s so worth it!
Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale says
I wish there were more fun races in my area!! I’m seriously at the point of wanting to start up an organizing committee to have a fabulously fun one!
Sara says
I did the Color Run this summer! It was a lot of fun! Definitely do it with friends though, and don’t worry about actually running…just enjoy the craziness 🙂
Lauren Stevenson says
I loved the Color Run!! I couldn’t run the whole thing, but it was still so fun and I made sure to run through all of the color stations! I’ll for sure be doing it again when it comes back to Denver next year. =)
Taryn says
We’re planning on trekking down to Orlando in December to do the Color Run there!
On another note.. how did you first find work when you decided to go the freelance route?
Sara says
I’m the only one among my friends who has this opinion but I will never pay money to have colored corn starch thrown on me. I see the point of obstacle course but the color run shows people will buy into any gimmick
Kelsey@ kelseyruns says
You and your sister definitely have to do the color run! It is the most fun I’ve ever had running! It was actually the first “race” I ever ran and it was definitely the greatest! It makes for some awesome pictures too!
Ellen @ Wannabe Health Nut says
Paint, I could probably do. Mud? Not so much. I’m the prissiest non-girlie girl ever! ha!
Taylor @ Liftingrevolution says
I’ve done 2 mudruns, and getting ready for another next month! I love them, because you’re challenged in so many ways. This one is a 10K race, with 30+ obstacles, i can’t wait.
Megan says
I am doing the color run in Houston in November! I think it looks like a total blast, and 5Ks are my absolute favorite!
Megan says
I heard once that each color of the color run was associated with a different charity (like pink for breast cancer). Do you know if that’s true? I just tried to look on the website and didn’t see anything about it, but I think that would be very cool if it was true and they gave the proceeds away or something.
Erica says
I’ve never done an obstacle race (or any race actually) but I’m dying to do one! They don’t come through the redneck riviera often though 🙂
Tina @ Best Body Fitness says
I so want to do a color run. It’s coming to ATL in March and I’m hoping it’s not the same weekend as the marathon I’m looking at doing.
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I’ve always wanted to do a mud run!!! I had a chance to do one here in Chicago but it was this past Saturday, the day before my 20 miler… Haha I decided that would NOT be a good way to rest up my legs!
Carrie @ Fitness and Frozen Grapes says
I’ve never done an obstacle race or Color Run, but I want to so badly–they look like so much fun! Both are on my fitness bucket list, so they will eventually happen. 🙂
Michelle says
This one is coming up really close to me…but I’m yet to sign up, so tempted!!! http://www.hellandback.ie/ but it will be freezing cold by the time it’s on, only thing holding me back!
Emily says
I agree with the first comment! The color run was my first 5k and it was AWESOME!…if you do it and have blonde highlights be careful..my hair was purple for WEEKS!! I put everything in my hair to try and get the color out (including anti bacterial gel)…ultimately i just had to get my hair done to cover it! no regrets though!
Hanna says
Have you heard of Tough Mudder? It’s a 12-mile obstacle course that is designed by the British Special Forces. Seems very intimidating to me!
Dianne says
The Color Me Rad 5k in Pittsburgh, PA benefitted the Ronald McDonald House charaties, and it was a blast!!! So much fun- you and your sister have to do the color run near you.
Also, I did a Warrior Dash last year, I never thought I’d have that in me, and next to completing my first half marathon, it was my proudest moment from a mental toughness standpoint!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
I think a color run or obstacle course run could be fun! I don’t think I’d like a mud run though. It just doesn’t appeal to me. Hah.
That cookie looks delish!
Nicole says
I have wanted to do a color run. There was one coming up in Charlotte before we left NC. Will have to check here in AZ.
The Kidless Kronicles
Lindsey says
I did my first obstacle race this summer, called the Spartan Race it was a total blast! I really want to do a color race soon too 🙂
Marci says
The Color Run is SO MUCH FUN!! Definitely worth it for a silly, good time. My group had many color “fights” at each station to get maximum coverage.
The down side: my shoes are still slightly green! Wear your old sneakers, for sure!
Melissa @ runscootsrun says
I did the Tough Mudder in PA this past April and had an absolute blast. It was between 12-13 miles with over 2 dozens obstacles. Highly recommend doing any type of run that is not your typical road race…just to change it up and have a different experience! 🙂
Karen says
Oh my god, I just did the Mid-Atlantic Tough Mudder two weekends ago. Hardest physical thing I’ve ever done, and I am by far prouder of that finish than any other race. We ran 11 miles through pouring rain and I ended up with three stitches but I’m so glad I did it!
Erin (Running Tall) says
Out of the millions of times I’ve seen that Color Run promo photo, I’ve NEVER noticed those two dudes! Now it’s all I see hahah. I’m in Canada and these kind of fun runs tend to stay in the states. Color Me Rad 5K is coming to Calgary next July so I’ll probably do that! Even though it’s the closest fun run location, it’s still an 8 hour drive from where I am (Saskatchewan). FUN RUNS: Come to Saskatchewan!
Kate says
THE COLOR RUN IS THE BEST! I’ve run a bunch of races, but that one has been, by far, my favorite. I even got my mom to run it — she HATES running — and she was laughing by the end 🙂
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
I think the Color Run is a must! My friend did one in Tulsa a few months ago and had such a blast! That cookie looks amazing 🙂
Lauren says
I’m not about to rain on the parade of those that do obstacle course type races, but I’ve read some iffy articles about their safety. So, for me, all I think it would mean is a twisted ankle of some kind. I’ll stick to flat road races.
Elizabeth @ Southern Color says
I completed my first mud run this past weekend, it was so much fun! There were about 10 mud related obstacles – much more exciting than a traditional 5k!! You should definitely do one 🙂
Kaylyn says
I did the Color Run, too!! It is seriously the most fun I have ever had running 🙂
Check out my blog post about it if you’re interested or need more convincing- we did it this summer!

Meg says
I just did the Color Run last week in Salt Lake City. It was a BLAST! They have music and dancing before the race starts and the workers are hilarious. I would definitely do it again!
Sarah says
The Color Run is coming to Reno this weekend and I wanted to do it so badly! But the friend I was going to do it with already signed up for Tough Mudder that same weekend (that’s a little too intense for me!)
The Foam Fest sounds like fun too! Hopefully we’ll be able to do both of them next year.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
I’m hoping to do an obstacle course race next summer…it sounds pretty awesome!
Lisa says
The Color Run looks like the absolute most fun race. I hate running, and even I’d like to do that one!
Heather O says
I ran the Dirty Girl last year and it was so much fun. I’m running it with all the women I know next Saturday and I’m so excited. We have hot pink tutus and amazing knee socks. The energy from the runs is really worth it. Everyone is there to have a great time.
Jenna says
I did the color run this summer and I loved it! For someone who is not a huge runner, this made it so easy and “doable” plus my friends and I had so much fun.
Pia says
Do the Hero Rush! I did it this past year in Maryland it was awesome! I had such a great time, the obstacles were challenging and the 5K was the perfect distance. There are fire fighters that run along with you so its really motivating and fun to run and do the obstacles along side them.
Connie says
I did the Color Run in Philadelphia with some of my friends! It was my first 5k, but I was surprised that by half way through, no one was really running anymore…haha, it was still so much fun though! It was an incredible site afterwards with so many people covered in neon colors! You and your sister should definitely do it.
I also get really creeped out by mayo, especially when there is a lot of it!! I guess I still like the taste of it but only in veryyyy small amounts 🙂
Nina @ Sweating It says
I hate to be a scrooge, but I just did the Color Run two weekends ago in DC and I unfortunately didn’t love it. The race itself was fun but it was poorly organized in terms of parking and start lines (what was supposed to be 30 minutes of wave starts took an hour, and I was at the very end…). I probably went into the whole thing too seriously, but if poorly organized races irk you, I might stay away.
Amy says
YES! We had one near where I live in Massachusetts and it was so poorly organized. The whole race was a nightmare – tons of traffic, running out of water, etc. Those obstacle races are known to be really dangerous too. Between that and the zombie races, I’ve known a few people with sprained ankles, etc. I, personally, stick to regular races run by people who know how to run races and want their runners to be safe.
Samantha says
I agree as well! I had a good time but the race (I did the San Francisco Color Run) was incredibly unorganized! They had confusion over start times and didn’t notify us the change by email but over their Facebook group they encourage you to join. For me that wasn’t an issue, but I just didn’t think it was professional because not everyone religiously checks facebook (and with how confusing that has gotten!) or thinks to double check race times!
All in all I had a good time, but it was a one time thing for me. Pretty expensive and the color dispensing wasnt quite as cool as expected. Oh and neither was the course… We ran around Candlestick parking lot. Wahoo! Anyways back to normal races for me!
Amanda says
I want to do the color run SO BAD! I had planned on doing one that was near me on my birthday this year, but it turns out a friend of mine is getting married that day so it was a no go! Maybe next year!
Jamie says
I did the color run in Chicago with my mom and best friend, and it was SO much fun! The people are so great and it’s seriously just a giant party! I would definitely recommend it!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
We’ve done the Muddy Buddy three times – running, biking, obstacles courses, and a giant mud pit with a partner. It’s so much more fun than just running!
