Like the memory of our wedding kiss.
You would think looking back on our wedding kiss would evoke feelings of romance and love, but when Ryan and I think back on our wedding kiss, we laugh. And we laugh hard.
A couple of weeks after our wedding, Ryan and I were sitting on the couch talking about random memories from that special day.
Then, out of nowhere, Ryan said, “So, about our wedding kiss…”
I looked at him with hesitation and then started cracking up.
“YOUR HANDS!!” I laughed. “What were you doing with your hands!? How have we not talked about this yet!?!?”
Ryan then started talking a mile a minute, explaining that during our ceremony he was excited and his head was spinning, so when our pastor said, “You may now kiss the bride,” his mind was all over the place and he thought he should touch my face or something.
“But you never touch my face! I usually have my hands around your neck and your hands are almost always around my waist!” I said.
Why not use a wedding ceremony as a place to change it up, ya know?
You can almost see his indecision in the pictures…
Ahhh!
Ryan and I look at all of our other wedding pictures and smile, but we laugh when we look at our wedding kiss pictures.
When we shared this story with our families, they assured us that no one had any idea our kiss was anything out of the ordinary for us, but it has turned into one of my favorite wedding memories because of the fact that both Ryan and I were likely thinking, “What the heck is going on!?!?” during one of the most romantic moments of our wedding ceremony.
Now, whenever a couple asks us for wedding day advice, we tell them to practice their wedding day kiss!
Question of the Afternoon
- What is the most awkward thing you’ve witnessed at a wedding?
- If you’re married, did your wedding day include any awkward moments?

i feel like i don’t remember my wedding it went by so fast. We just got our pictures back so it’s coming back to me i can’t WAIT to get the video back. I wish i could do it all over again i’m putting my wedding dress on when we get the video back i don’t care – i want it on one more time before i get it preserved.

Hahaha ohhhh this made me laugh so much! Being very newly married I was sooo happy that we did a wedding rehearsal the day before BUT our kiss at the rehearsal was so awkward that I thought the day of was going to be ridiculous! Thankfully we pulled it together for the actual moment. My groom did however start to put my wedding ring on and then panicked when he saw my engagement ring on the other hand, took my wedding ring back off and then dropped it! It was so funny!! Ohhhh awkward moments. The best!!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
they are the best and really make you laugh years later. 🙂 glad your rehearsal kiss prepared you for your wedding day kiss!
Elle says
We got married on an outdoor balcony at the Grand Floridian Hotel in Disney World.. just me, him , a JP and a photographer. He dropped my ring and it rolled across the floor toward the dropoff edge. And he managed to pick it up before it got there… I still tease him that he tried to get out of marrying me by throwing my ring away!
Your pics are lovely.

There was a show on TLC about a year ago called “American Virgins” or something like that, and one couple hadn’t even kissed before their wedding. The groom came at the bride and the word “Anteater” springs to mind. (Available for your viewing pleasure on youtube!)
Still the most disturbing wedding moment I’ve ever witnessed, and I wasn’t even there!
Linda says
I was the one with the hand problem. I didn’t know where to put my hands. We didn’t practice it. I think I went with his arm but it felt awkward.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
LOL! glad to know we’re not alone!!
Casey says
This is an adorable story. 🙂
I just got married on Saturday!!—and I so empathize with Ryan’s wedding nerves. During our cake cutting, no one had really showed us how to cut it, and I wasn’t thinking it would be up so high—I had to lift my arm up a lot. Well, I ended up accidentally cutting off basically half the cake, and it tumbled off the plate heading for the table! I somewhow miraculously grabbed a plate and it plopped onto it, but it was a close one—all of our guests burst out laughing!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
aw! so glad you caught it! and CONGRATS on your wedding!
Molly Antos says
I LOVE that wedding story! One that my husband and I always laugh about is crying during the ceremony. We always argue about who started it, and of course … it was him! There’s even this great picture of the whole wedding party gathered in the church directly following the ceremony – Dan is trying to say I started it, and everyone is yelling “no” and pointing at him. 🙂
Jenica says
Haha! What a funny memory and it’s sweet you both laugh about it.
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
That is adorably funny. And I love that you have pictures to showcase what you described. lol. 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I’m definitely the kind of person who if my workout doesn’t happen in the morning, there’s only a 30% chance of it happening. And if it’s happening after work, there IS NO WAY I’m going home first or I’ll never leave again. HA!
And as for that picture of your wedding kiss, particularly where his hand is on our head, it’s hilarious! But definitely a memory for sure! 🙂
Amber says
That was hilarious!!! I saw the first pic and thought thats not weird then I scrolled down to the 2nd lol!!! What was he thinking?? Thanks for sharing…too funny!

My friend got married and she told her (now) husband “whatever you do, do NOT dip me for our first kiss”. He promised that he wouldn’t. But he did anyways and she was so startled that she sort of freaked out and he dropped her on the floor!
Bailey @ Onederland or Bust! says
I never would’ve noticed if I had just been scrolling through your wedding pictures, but after reading your story, the second picture made me laugh! Such a cute and funny story. You’re so right though.. I don’t even know what I would do when it was time to kiss.. I’m pretty sure my boyfriend would do something awkward as well.
Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual says
This is entirely too cute! 😉
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
What a cute story! That’s hilarious! I personally think the wedding kiss is so awkward…I never looked forward to sharing such a private moment with all my family and friends!
Shannon says
I just got married in August and the most awkward thing that happened was during the ceremony. The wind really picked up and blew my veil straight up and it got stuck in the arch! My sister/MOH had to get it out. I couldn’t stop laughing and neither could my husband. So many people got pictures of it. Funniest part..the exact same thing happened to my mother on her and my dad’s wedding day. They’ve been married 30 years so I’m taking it as a good omen 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
that is too funny! and SO crazy about your the same thing happening to your mom. if you have a daughter in the future, make sure she glues her veil down or something! 🙂

OMGoodness im cracking up!!!! “dont know what to do with my hands “- step brothers

Oh my gosh. This whole post, comments included had me in tears. So hilarious. I am getting married next year and I never though to worry about those little things. My main goal is to not trip as I walk down to aisle. I think I can handle most things, but not that. LOL Congrats on two years Julie! Thanks for sharing with us!
Christine says
I agree with your advice! I never thought to talk to my husband about our kiss, but I wish I would have. When it came time to kiss I was expecting more of a romantic kiss but my husband just gave me a super quick peck on the lips. When I asked him about it, he said he didn’t want to have a long kiss in front of his family (he’s kind of shy about any public affection). I’m surprised our photographer was able to get a picture of it, it happened so fast!
Mary Babicki says
You guys are so cute! Happy Anniversary!
Lindsay @ Fit with Farrar says
We had a small, immediate-family only, outdoor ceremony. A massive summer thunderstorm was looming, the wind was whipping, and quite obviously, I was full of excited nerves!! The preacher starts going through the motions of the ceremony, and I thought he had skipped a part so I leaned in and whispered it to him, and he politely told me all was good. The funniest part was when I leaned in to whisper to him, everyone in the audience also leaned in, all holding their breath, trying to hear me….like I was going to be a runaway bride or something! 🙂 My husband and all our family laugh about it to this day!
Julie says
Random curiosity about your tracker you wear, I’m guessing you have to wear the thing around your chest area to get the measurements? I’ve been wanting to get one but hubby says to trust the machines (which I don’t).
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
the machines can be really off. i highly recommend a heart rate monitor for more accurate calorie counts (if that’s what you’re after) or the garmin 305 that i’m using is great to also track distance!
Jen @nutcaseinpoint says
So, my hubs and I got married in a civil ceremony in April (shh don’t tell, we are still planning a big wedding for July 2013) but the best part of that day in April was that we chose to get married on a cliff overlooking Two Jack Lake in Banff, Alberta. As soon as we kissed, we turned around for some pictures and realized we got hitched right next to a big pile of mountain goat poop. ohhhhhhh shi*t. 🙂
Kristy @ Kristy's Health Revolution says
Oh my, I just CRACKED up looking at that photo! You can tell from the close up how awkward it was! I think it’s adorable that he was so nervous/awkward. Happy Anniversary!

That is tooo funny about your wedding kiss. I have to laugh when I think of my wedding kiss with my husband too. We got married in a very conservative church in front of a very conservative crowd (mostly my husband’s family) and during our meetings with the pastor before the wedding, he stressed to be quick and “appropriate” during our kiss. They don’t even say “you may kiss the bride” because it is not part of the hymnal’s ceremony.
Anyways, I guess we were both really concerned about making people mad so we had the SHORTEST peck of a wedding kiss in the history of weddings. I am shocked we even had a picture of the fleeting moment. We definitely snicker every time it comes up. AWKWARD!!!!
char eats greens says
Oh my goodness…after hearing that story THEN seeing the pictures, I couldn’t help but laugh. I’m so happy you have that awkward part of your wedding to remember.
Mine is totally my hubby grabbing the wrong hand when he was about to put on my wedding band. There are several pictures of us laughing at each other during that moment and I love every one of them!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
That’s an awesome story! I love it!
At our wedding, my now husband couldn’t get the wedding ring on my finger. It took him at least 30 seconds to get it on there. Everyone was cracking up! Another part of the Indian ceremony is when the groom puts a special necklace on the bride (it’s what signifies marriage in the Indian culture). Well, the hook thing was so small that he couldn’t figure it out with everything I was wearing. My best friend had to come on stage and help him! It was so funny and so us!
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
We got married in the Catholic church – we didn’t even have a first kiss during the ceremony! When it didn’t happen at our rehearsal, I just thought it was because that would, like, make it “official.” Umm, I was not thrilled, that’s for sure! So I always tell couples: ASK about the first kiss during the rehearsal!
Your pictures totally made me laugh! 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
who knew the kiss could be so complicated!?!
Beth says
Haha, I did this exact same thing! And we share a wedding date – 10.30.10 – Happy 2 year to you! Back to the point, I suddenly didn’t know what to do with my hands (usually they’re on his chest because I’m too short to reach his neck) but maybe the 4″ wedding shoes got to me and my arms were suddenly, weirdly on top of his shoulders? Like, as if I was going to hoist myself up or something? So weird. I corrected it for a second quick kiss, but only have one photo of that one. Haha
Michelle says
Awh so cute! Nice to have a funny moment to share! I’ve been to hardly any weddings…most cringe worthy moments include a wedding I was at last March were my boss and work friends attended and my boss got INCREDIBLY drunk and was sliding across the dance floor on his knees in the early hours. That was awkward! 🙂
Katie @ Livehalffull says
Agreed! Our wedding kiss was awkward too! It came so quickly-we went from vows to kiss so quickly we were still holding hands when we kissed. It was like an awkward middle school dance!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
hahaha! this comment gave me a great visual! 🙂 kisses are tough, man.
Sonya says
By far the greatest thing Ive read in awhile. You guys crack me up!
Amy H. says
Oh, that is so funny! You really can see the indecision in the pictures!
I got married this summer, and when my husband was giving me the ring, he was supposed to say “With this ring, I thee wed.” Instead, he said “With this ring, I BE wed.” i haven’t actually pointed this out to him because I think he’d be embarrassed, but it makes me chuckle whenever I think about it 🙂
Happy anniversary to y’all, by the way!
Gabby @ Gabby's Gluten-Free says
That is so cute!
Our wedding kiss was hysterical. My stepdad performed our ceremony and I was a ball of nerves and emotion the entire time (which was about 10 minutes). He pronounced us husband and wife and without thinking about it, I just went in for the kiss without him saying “kiss the bride”. It was pretty hilarious at the moment and one of my favorite memories of our wedding ceremony.
Kristin says
Haha, that is a hilarious picture of you two!
I’m getting married in Nov 2013, but I’ve been to lots of weddings so I have 2 funny stories that stick out. One friend’s sister (a bridesmaid) fainted during the ceremony and somehow, her dad in the front row saw it happening and caught her from slamming into the ground! It was awkward to move on from for a few minutes. The other wedding was a friend of mine and during the ceremony, the pastor’s message to the couple kept including the word “divorce”. He must have said it at least 30 times throughout the ceremony and it was SO WEIRD. I was too afraid to ask her about it in case she thought it was ok, so I just kept my feelings to myself. =)
Alysha @Shesontherun says
This is hilarious!! I love how you guys can still laugh about it years later. Your story made me smile!

I was so sick on our wedding day we almost cancelled the ceremony and let the reception go on as a “postponed wedding shindig” (with me absent). (I actually had salmonella poisoning from a “quick lunch out” the day before )
We decided the show must go on … Hubby’s dad is a doctor so he had me on IV and injected me with anti-nauseant med stematil.
I was TRIPPIN!
Stoned out of my gourd.
(Remeber 16Candles bride who took the pain pills…she was composed compared to me!)
They had to bring me a chair to sit on during the ceremony … And I kept dozing off.
When it was time to kiss Gareth, the eternal joker said “NO FREAKING WAY!!!” And I flipped him the bird!
Very few wewdding pix were taken as I got sicker and spent my wedding night in the hospital (aparantly the reception was a blast…I’ve seen the video of it.
SO now when we go to weddings and they say “kiss the bride” we always kiss … And people we know know why we are kissing…others wonder why we are making out!
Lauren Rees says
My husband’s name is Gareth too! 🙂
janet says
Cool!! There are very few Gareths … he is working in Japan and no one can pronoice his name (and as he is 6″10″ everyone and i mean EVERYONE asks him if he plays basketball.
He also has a GREAT sense of humour … if we could survive that wedding we can survive anything.
(best part? I missed the speeches!!!!!!)
(worst part? Me throwing up on my wedding gown!

Our friend who is a photographer was actually at our proposal as were both sets of parents who all surprised me. After the actual proposal, our photographer friend took some pictures of us and I felt so silly kissing my fiance in front of both our sets of parents and posing for pictures that way. I got over it after a couple shots, but I just remembered thinking, “Ok Chelsea, if it’s okay for you to be engaged, it’s probably okay to kiss Shane in front of your dad now.”
Christina @ livedreamrun.wordpress.com says
That’s awesome! Even more so that you can both look back and laugh about it. We all have those moments that make our day “ours.”

It’s so funny that you talk about practicing the kiss! Last month my (then) fiancé and I decided as we were leaving our rehearsal dinner, we would practice our kiss (since we wouldn’t be seeing each other again until I walked down the aisle). It was great because we wound up with a Dip/Kiss and it was perfect because it expressed just how excited we were in that moment (though, I was afraid that in the process of dipping me he would drop me!).
Mrs Type A says
Oh I’ve got a good one for you. My husband is Jewish so we incorporated Jewish traditions throughout the wedding. At the reception, we did the whole put the bride and groom up on a chair. I was nervous about this, but my friend assured me she’s been to tons of jewish weddings and has never seen anyone fall….
After being up there for maybe 30 seconds, our drunk friends hoisted me further upward and OUT and I fell OFF the chair! Luckily I landed on my feet and my dress didn’t rip or anything… but it was scary!
Needless to say, when our friends put the chair back and motioned for me to sit in it and go up again I said NO WAY. My friend felt like she jinxed me by saying she’s never seen anyone fall!
Karianne Salisbury says
Oh that is TOO funny! The story was great…but then came the pictures. That just made my day. 🙂
ash says
I kept saying we needed to practice our kiss half joking, half serious. We never did and we were both frazzled when the minister said “you may now kiss the bride.” We knew it was coming but you know what I mean about that awkward moment when he says it. I ended up with my hands on my husband’s face which I never do, and I’m not sure where his hands ended up because the photographer only got a photo from elbows up. So, I don’t really know what the crowd saw 🙂
