Apparently this grassroots marketing worked on me, because ever since then, I’ve wanted a pastrami sandwich. Unfortunately for TooJay’s, I made my own and didn’t purchase one from their delicious deli (though if there was a TooJay’s within walking distance of my office, I likely would have).
I made my pastrami on rye using pastrami deli meat, stone ground mustard, romaine lettuce and an Arnold rye sandwich thin!
I was pretty darn excited when I saw that Arnold sandwich thins were on sale at Publix this weekend, and when I found rye sandwich thins I was all the more excited! I didn’t know that they even made rye sandwich thins. Score!
Along with my pastrami sandwich, I also enjoyed roasted curried cauliflower and carrots that I prepped last night when I was baking the fish for our fish tacos. Multitasking at its finest!
Back to work for the rest of the day…
Questions of the Afternoon
- What is the best sandwich you’ve ever had from a restaurant?
- What is your favorite homemade sandwich?
From a restaurant, my favorite sandwich is the French dip sandwich from Houston’s (now Hillstone) in Winter Park, Florida. Hands-down the best sandwich I’ve ever had.
When it comes to homemade sandwiches, I gravitate toward roast beef with cheese, tuna salad or peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Oh and my breakfast bagelwiches, of course. 😉
P.S. The Fashion page was updated this afternoon!
P.P.S. If you’re interested in more blogging tips, definitely read the comments on yesterday’s lunchtime post. You guys are so wise and I definitely picked up a thing or two from the advice that was shared. Thank you for weighing in!

Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
Oh gosh, hard to say…I love ALL sandwiches! But there is a grilled chicken panini with roasted red peppers, provolone cheese, basil pesto, and tomatoes from a local restaurant near me that ROCKS. 🙂
Stephanie @ LiveCookLove says
My all time favorite sandwich to make is a BLT with mayo and really crispy bacon. YUM. Get’s me every time.
Hope says
I had NO idea that Arnold made Rye sandwich thins!! That just made my day! 🙂 I need to get some asap! I love egg salad or chicken salad sandwiches. I don’t know why I don’t make them. They are my absolute favorites 🙂
Hannah says
At a restaurant I always go for anything with avocado. But, at home it’s straight up peanut butter, honey, raisins and banana. 🙂
Alexis says
My favorite sandwich is the Larkspur from Isaac’s Restaurant & Deli in York, PA. Muenster and cheddar cheeses, fresh tomatoes, spinach and sprouts, wrapped in a grilled flatbread with ranch dressing. I have dreams about it. I try to recreate it at home but it never tastes the same!
Jess (Daly Authenticity) says

The only thing that comes to mind is the Cheesecake Factory’s Incredible Eggplant Sandwich, but w/o the eggplant, lol.
Best homemade sandwich? Hmmm, that’s tough! Does PB&J count?
peanutbutterfingers says
absolutely! pb&j is a classic.
Chelsey @ Jam&Run says
There is a local sandwich shop in the mall near my office called Press’d, they bake their own bread and use the freshest veggies! It’s all made to order in front of you. My favorite sandwich so far is the hot buffalo press’d sandwich, to DIE for!!!
peanutbutterfingers says
i love their name! press’d = too cute.
Mendie says
Reubens are my favorite!!! French Dip at Brookwood in Atlanta is also a fav! I didnt know they made the rye thins – I would love that, will have to keep an eye out for them! Hopefully they will be on sale at my Publix too! 😉
Caitlin @ The Caitie Experiment says
So tough to say, but I think my favorite sandwich from a restaurant is a good BLT on white, with American cheese and mayo. So bad for you but I don’t get them often, so I LOVE them when I do! Close runner up is the Super Turkey bagelwich from a place in my college town: turkey, honey mustard aioli, sprouts, lettuce and tomato on an open-faced bagel. Y-U-M.
Favorite from home: it’s a tough call, but I am obsessed with my Foreman as a panini maker, so it’s either a fresh mozzarella-roma tomato-fresh basil on sourdough OR a smoked gouda-roasted red pepper on sourdough, both grilled on the Foreman until the cheese melts!
Amber Mitchell says
Mmmm…the turkado from Murrays!! Its smoked turkey, bacon, avacado, sprouts, with mayo! Yum-O!
Katy @ A Healthy Shot of Life says
I found my all-time favorite sandwich at a cafe in Australia- pumpkin, spinach, feta, pine nuts and pesto on foccocia. Panini-style. Yum 🙂

I hate picking a chain restaurant, but Friendly’s seriously has an AMAZING grilled cheese.
My favorite sandwich to make at home is a fake chicken cheesesteak. MMM.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
The best sandwich I’ve ever had in a restaurant was so good that I dedicated part of a post to it. It was filled with miso-marinated tempeh, portobello mushrooms, spinach, and garlic aioli. The bread was organic light rye, lightly brushed with coconut oil and toasted. (http://eatspinrunrepeat.wordpress.com/2010/12/30/thrive-juice-bar-and-my-top-5-meals-of-2010/). I’m not vegan, but this seriously was one of the best meals I’ve ever had!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I had a delicious ham and gruyere sandwich on ciabatta at Popover Cafe in Manhattan. I still think about it to this day! Then again, I haven’t met a sandwich that I don’t love, lol. Sandwiches are my fav! <3
Love pastrami with mustard. So yummy!
Dana says
I think the best sandwich I’ve had from a restaurant was a fried green tomato BLT from Regi’s in Baltimore. And, the best homemade sandwich…hmmmm. Does a turkey burger count?

Healthier(?) sandwich: The Hummer from Hopkins. It is on rye pumpernickle bread and has hummus, feta cheese, italian dressing, mayo, turkey, olive, onion, lettuce and tomato. It’s deeeelish.
Not-so-healthy: Philly cheesesteak. hands down.
Homemade: Salami and any kind of cheese, or peanut butter and banana.
Can you tell I love sandwiches? lol
Joanna@ Drizzle of Sunshine says
Hmmm… My favorite sandwhich would have to be from Philippe’s…where the original French Dip was started..or so they say.
My favorite homemade sandwhich would have to be my mom’s egg salad sandwhich!
Jenn from Much to My Delight says
I am a major sucker for an Original at Schlotzky’s. If they had them in NYC I would weigh 400 pounds. And every one of those extra pounds would be worth it.
At home, my favorite to make is a fresh fig–goat cheese—prosciutto panini.
Shari @ Chicago Cuisine Critique says
I absolutely love Toojay’s. They have some of the best tuna sandwiches on the planet. Seriously!
Tara @The Game of Life says

My favorite sandwich comes from a local deli. Maple glazed chicken breast, Brie, arugula, tomatoes and Cajun remoulade served on a baguette. So good.
Emma (Namaste Everyday) says
I make a mean grilled cheese: the trick is hearty, artisan bread, CRUMBLED cheddar cheese, a sauce (BBQ, hot sauce, mustard) plus some veggies (tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach) then slap it on the lean mean grillin maching–a george foreman! you’ll die and go to heaven in one bite
Hayley says
I’d have to say a Ball Tip Sandwich from Kinders Meats and Deli…Strange name I know, but its something you won’t find anywhere but a Kinder’s deli. Its to die for!
orrr this since sandwich obviously equals an ice cream sandwich in my mind: http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=1ArdBetF-pM3Y4eP1pgNPA&select=fjqYNeOEB49q0b3r5ic44A
Homemade would have to be a blue cheese burger which I top with a slab of this creamy St.Agur blue cheese, caramelized onion, grilled lettuce and tomato all on a light and airy grilled bun! Now I’m making myself hungry!
Natalie from Nat Attacks a Balanced Life says
The Caprese sandwich ( fresh buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, tomatoes with added pesto and italian salami, which i used to order but now order all veggie served a fresh baguette that is served crispy on the outside and freshly soft and chewy on the inside) from BAY CITIES in Santa Monica. It is a little italian grocer and deli, a very local spot. This place is the best if your ever in Santa Monica you have to visit and order the ‘godfather’.
Christina says
Rye bread is the best!
The best sandwich ever though was from the dining hall at Boston College called a “New England Classic”. It is turkey and cheddar cheese, granny smith apple slices, and honey mustard on cranberry bread and grilled on the panini press. Even though I graduated almost 3 years ago (eeek!!) I still crave this sandwich. Plus, they made their own chips there which were soooo good.
At home though, I’ve been really into tuna fish made with avocado and hummus instead of mayo! It’s super good.
stefanie says
What is Pastrami?! It looks soo good! Can it be found at the deli counter in any market? Im getting sick of turkey sandwiches & want to mix it up.
