Baby Updates
Baby weighs about two pounds, or as much as a head of cauliflower, and is 14 1/2 inches long!
Weight Gained
I didn’t weigh myself at 27 weeks, but at my 28 week appointment, I was up about 19 pounds!
Workouts
Another great week on the workout front! Spinning, BodyPump and Pure Barre classes rounded out my workouts this week, along with some great walks outside with Sadie.
Symptoms
I’m really starting to notice the extra weight I’m carrying when I am doing simple activities like walking up a hill. I can definitely tell I have more weight in my belly and find myself getting much more easily winded when I walk uphill or take stairs too quickly. It’s kind of weird because I feel fine during spinning classes but inclines and stairs get me every time! Sometimes I feel like I have to place a hand underneath my belly as I walk uphill for a little extra support which surprisingly really does seem to help relieve pressure and make me feel a little more comfortable.
I am also beginning to feel like I am becoming way more sensitive to heat. Temperatures in the high 70s or low 80s used to feel “perfect” to me (especially when we lived in Florida and that would actually feel cool), but now 80+ degree temperatures make me break out in a sweat if I do anything other than sit! (Ryan said I finally understand what it feels like to be him all the time!) The weather here is gorgeous right now and I’m trying to spend as much time outside as possible before the summer heat kicks in and I will likely evaporate into a pool of sweat.
Any other Father of the Bride Part II fans out there remember the scene when Annie and Nina are sweating to death and George is all bundled up and freezing?
I feel your pain, ladies!
Sore gums also surfaced this week. I’ve read a lot about the importance of keeping up with oral hygiene during pregnancy and I’ve tried to stick with a good routine, but this week I noticed a definite increase in sensitivity in my gums which wasn’t so fun.
Food Aversions
Nothing too strong this week! There are still foods I definitely have no desire to eat that I loved pre-pregnancy (like tomato-based soups), but the simple thought of them no longer makes me gag.
Food Cravings
- WATERMELON
- WATERMELON
- WATERMELON
Um, watermelon?
Sleep
This was one of my worst weeks for sleep in a while. I am still waking up multiple times each night (usually because I have to pee… again), but I’m having more difficulty returning to sleep afterward. One night I was up for a solid 90 minutes at 2 a.m. because my mind just wouldn’t shut off! I am still able to get comfortable at night thanks to the Snoogle, but I do miss being able to sleep on my stomach.
Looking Forward To…
My 28-week prenatal appointment! Feeling a combination of nervous and excited about this one!
Also, if you read last week’s pregnancy recap, you may remember Alaska popping up under this category. Well, the following day, all of our Alaska travel plans fell through. We planned to go on a an Alaskan cruise babymoon through a press trip and unfortunately the PR agency I was working with didn’t realize how far along I am in my pregnancy. Apparently there’s an industry-wide restriction against women cruising after 24 weeks. This completely shocked me (I truly never thought it would be an issue as long as I had my doctor’s approval) and was so, so disappointed when the trip got canceled 1.5 weeks out from when we were supposed to leave. I’m trying not to dwell on it (I swear I will see whales in the wild one day! It’s still the top item on my travel bucket list!) and Ryan and I are hoping to pull together some sort of a fun vacation before our baby arrives.
Rather than the big week-long Alaska vacation, we’re now hoping to plan two mini weekend getaways. We already had one on the agenda for June that we’re trying to move up to next weekend and then the other idea we have is to make a quick trip to Charleston, South Carolina since we’ve never been and have heard great things! Charleston is drivable from here for us which makes it extra appealing. If you have any recommendations for fun things to do or places to stay in Charleston, please let me know!
Any Baby/Pregnancy-Related Purchases?
I owe you guys a BIG thank you for recommending ASOS maternity clothes to me. Their dresses are adorable and I spent a little too much money ordering some baby shower dress possibilities from their website.
My possibilities:
- Bardot Dress – Love the length of this one. I wanted it in blue, but they didn’t have my size in stock, so I opted for red.
- Double Layer Color Block Dress – My favorite!!! I think this one is ridiculously cute and pretty unique… But I have no idea how it will actually look on me.
- Shift Dress with Cut Out – I have a feeling this will be the one I feel most comfortable in and I love cut out in the back and the cobalt color.
- Shift Dress with Cutaway Neck – I ordered this one solely for the neckline. Love it! I just hope it doesn’t look too orange when it arrives…
- Off-The-Shoulder Bardot Dress – I love the off-the-shoulder look of this dress but I’m not sure I want to wear black to my baby shower. I would try to make it more fun by pairing funky/colorful shoes with this one.
I am planning on keeping two (assuming I actually like the look/fit of two – fingers crossed!) and returning the rest, so my credit card will feel a little happier soon enough. The last dress I had my eye on from Nordstrom Rack for my baby shower ended up selling out, so I didn’t want to take any chances this time around!
Belly Button In Or Out?
Flat!
Feeling…
I am finding myself feeling more and more caught up in the fact that our baby is almost here. Some days it feels like we have forever to go and other days it feels like he’ll be here any second.
My mom always said pregnancy typically lasts for nine months for a reason and I am feeling like this could not be more true right now. I felt like things were progressing slowly there for a few months and then right around 24 or 25 weeks, I looked down and saw a big ol’ bump and truly felt pregnant.
I started to feel a little stressed out when I began looking at the classes my OB/GYN highlighted for us to take. When I checked the hospital’s website almost all of the classes in the coming weeks were already full but fortunately we were able to claim spots in a breastfeeding class and childbirth prep class in the middle of June. Though I already have my CPR certification thanks to my personal training and group exercise certifications, I figured a refresher wouldn’t hurt and signed Ryan and myself up for an infant CPR class in the beginning of July as well. Oh! And we nabbed a spot in the oh-so-popular Preparing to Parent a Baby class at the end of July… two weeks before my due date. Eek! That was the only class we could get into and if baby comes early, I guess we’re out of luck on that one!
Quick question for the moms out there: Did you take any classes before you had your little one? Did you find them helpful?
Any Movement?
Yes! I feel him move a lot but not ALL the time like it seems like many pregnant women do. I still seem to feel him move most right before bed! Loving it!
Sarah says
I LOVE Charleston! That will be such a fun baby moon trip! You have to go to Hominy Grill for brunch and if you like shrimp n grits, they are amazing there!
Brynn says
Sorry about your trip, but I do highly recommend a baby moon. My husband and I jetted off to hawaii for a week and it was suck a special time to be together and celebrate. I did not take classes and was perfectly fine without them.
Marina D says
The Charleston Waterfront Park is so beautiful!! It’s perfect for long walks, relaxing, and lovely picture-taking. If you’re bringing Sadie along with you I’m sure she’ll LOVE it! 🙂
Dacon says
Our babymoon was around Charleston too! We got a room on the beach in Isle of Palms and then spent most evenings strolling around and eating dinner in Charleston. Very relaxing!
Julie says
That sounds like heaven!
Jami says
Yes, my husband and I took a half day course on a weekend and they covered everything. It was perfect and overwhelming at the same time. Good for you on planning to breastfeed! It’s such a wonderful thing to be able to nourish your child and bond. Word of advice- have lots of support because it can be a difficult journey with ups and downs. Find out who the lactation consultant is at your local hospital and befriend them!! Also kellymom.com is a great site for useful breastfeeding tips and tricks for common issues that arise. You will do great!!! I made it 1 year even though I exclusively pumped for probably 7-8 months. Hope you find the classes helpful, I sure did! Best to you guys in your last trimester! It will fly by!

If you go to Charleston {which happens to be where I was at 28 weeks into my 1st pregnancy}, make sure to grab pizza from EVOO {super yummy brick oven pizza made with all natural ingredients}. We didn’t take any classes, but my mom owns a daycare and I was a nanny pre-children, so I’m pretty comfortable with kids. 🙂
Julie says
YUMMMM! Sounds delicious!
Erin says
Sorry about your trip 🙁 I’m taking an infant care class 3 weeks before my due date. Those classes are hard to get into!!
Julie says
Aren’t they!? Apparently I should’ve signed up months ago!
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
I am soooo sorry about Alaska!!!! What a bummer.
Charleston is one of my favorite places. Try eating at Hanks, Husk and SNOB. I also really like going out to Folly Beach.
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
I love your bump! I’m sorry your trip fell through. 🙁 But Charleston is supposed to be beautiful! I’d love to hear all about it!
Chelsea says
Hi Julie!
My boyfriend and I actually just got back from a trip to Charleson! (Our first time, as we live in Lexington KY which is a 8+ hour drive!). Folly Beach was a lot of fun, but my highlight was seeing the Angel Oak Tree! It is actually on Johns Island, but it’s not a bad drive and it is simply gorgeous! (It is HUGE and about 400 yrs old!). Just one note- we brought our dog Tootie because it didn’t say anything about dogs on the website that I could find, but once we got there, there were several signs that’s said dogs weren’t allowed in the same area as the tree. In case you were to bring Sadie, just a heads up!
Enjoy your trip- I very much enjoyed Charleston and plan to go back again soon!!
Julie says
Thank you, Chelsea! So glad you enjoyed your vacation!
Mallory says
Hi Julie! I’m 35 weeks pregnant and living in Charleston. Just a reminder if you come to visit in June/July….The humidity will be about 100% (no joke) and will “feel like” at least 90-100 degrees. No fun for pregnancy and not something I’m looking forward to :/
But make sure you try Stars (restaurant downtown) on the weekend. They have an AMAZING breakfast buffet that is perfect for any pregnant woman with an appetite 🙂
Megan says
You’ll love Charleston! I second Hominy Grill and a trip to Folly Beach (Rita’s was a great lunch spot there!) and I’ll also add it’s so fun to peruse the city market. Other restaurant recs include Poogan’s Porch (SO good for dinner) and Cru Cafe. We’ve stayed at the Andrew Pickney Inn and really liked it. Oh yeah – with your sweet tooth you must go to Kaminsky’s for dessert!
Goldie says
I’m so glad you mentioned the movement thing. I can get really worried all day long. I had a few days around week 26 where s/he went bonkers in there (and I thought “oh, this is what people mean, it’ll be like this from now on”) and then s/he quietened down and one day there was nothing until bed time and even then it felt light. Then the next day it was all day gentle movement and nothing through the night!
worst thing I did was google it :-/
big mistake – how I didn’t end up at the maternity unit begging for a scan is beyond me! I realise now that it’s just different for everyone and I have to stop panicking!
Stacey says
I am loving your pregnancy updates, since I’m a week behind you it has definitely given me things to look forward to and expect 🙂 My husband and I are going to Charleston for our Babymoon, it looks like a great place for eating and exploring!! We can’t wait!
Julie says
Awesome!! Have you started planning yet? I am a little overwhelmed w/ where to stay and what to do at the moment, especially w/ not much time to plan!
Caitlin says
I live in Charleston and love it! So much to do and see. If you can swing it the Charleston Place is an awesome hotel and right in the middle of downtown. The Charleston’s Farmer’s market is on Saturday morning and you could check that out. I am partial to Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms for beaches which are just over the Ravenel bridge (BTW the bridge is a popular workout location). Sullivan’s has a lot of restaurants for lunch. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions!
Courtney Richardson says
So excited for you!
Kate says
I was told not being able to sleep during pregnancy was Mother Nature’s way of preparing you for life with a baby. So not cool of Mother Nature 🙂
Julie says
Ha!! I’ve heard the same thing! Cruel! 🙂
Haelena says
I love the look of your ponytail in the picture of you under “workouts!” Could you maybe do a tutorial for that bump that you have with the ponytail? It looks super cute!
Kelly says
I am sitting here with my 8week old baby, and reminiscing about the 3rd trimester sleep. I think I was up 4 times a night at the end!! And you are right, sometimes I would end up reading an entire book because I was so awake and uncomfortable. My childbirth class experience still makes me chuckle, we took hypnobirthing, I hired a doula, I was ready! Then Andrew decided to stay breech and I ended up with a planned c-section 🙂
Lisa says
Maybe a stupid question, but is this going to classes thing an American thing? Im Swedish myself and have not heard of similar things over here. We do get advice for breast feeding (everyone is assumed to at least try) and you can, in most places, join a CPR class but apart from that you just do it yourself. Its interesting to read about how different it can be!
sara c says
we lived in greenville, sc for a few years (also a great weekend trip location!) and did a weekend trip to charleston, and we STILL talk about it today! its such a quaint and historical city. hominy grill is great for breakfast, and five loaves is the cutest (smallest) little place for a cozy dinner date. also, take a carraige tour first thing! its very cheesy i know, but you learn so much about the city!
when we were there, we detoured to sullivans island before driving home. great beach to walk, and poe’s tavern is a must! they’re on many “best burger” lists!
Jenessa @ Straight Laces says
What a bummer for your trip to fall through at the last minute! At least you two are able to roll with the punches and make other fun plans!
Amanda @ Slimplify Life says
Loving the shift dress! But they’re all adorable 🙂
You look great girlfriend!!!
Christine says
We went to Charlestown in March – I was about 23 weeks pregnant at the time. Def go to Hominy Grill and Poogans Porch – so yummy! We walked everywhere which kind of took a toll on me being pregnant and all – we would go back to the hotel for mid day naps…haha!
We also just took a breastfeeding class and newborn care class – both were great and we learned a lot. We opted out of the birthing class just b/c a few of my girlfriends took it and said it was a waste and since all births are different what they learned in the class didn’t really apply to them (I think it was based on a more natural childbirth with no epidural).
Good luck with the classes! 🙂
Heather says
It’s too bad your Alaska trip was cancelled. If you’re looking for whales, have you ever considered visiting Newfoundland? Lots of whales here! They swim and play all around the tour boats. It’s absolutely amazing! We love taking our kids out to watch them every summer. And right now we have stunning icebergs to go with the whales! 🙂
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
TIME FOR A VACA TO RICHMOND! 😉
But for real though, Richmond was just rated #1 by Business Insider in the Top 10 places to visit this summer (http://www.businessinsider.com/best-us-summer-travel-destinations-2015-5#1-richmond-virginia-in-the-summer-the-james-river-is-a-prime-location-for-locals-who-flock-to-its-island-the-belle-isle-to-go-swimming-fishing-mountain-climbing-and-mountain-biking-the-james-river-also-hosts-class-iii-whitewater-conditions-making-it-a-favorite-for-rafting-enthusiasts-10).
C’mon down. Britt and I will have Pure Barre and mocktails waiting for you.

Awww, I’m so sorry about your Alaska trip. I’d commented last week that it sounded amazing, but I was surprised you’d be able to cruise at this stage in pregnancy. Cruise ships get very odd about any sort of “condition”, and I guess pregnancy is one of them 🙂
In regards to classes, I’m not sure if you’re planning to breastfeed your little one, but if so, I highly, highly recommend a breastfeeding class. I found it extremely helpful and I routinely went back to the notes/pamphlets that were provided when I was struggling in the early days (and early/late night feedings). Also, I recommend looking into renting a high-end breast pump from your hospital. They’re very good quality and are, in my experience, a better option than owning one that does nothing but take up space. It’s a monthly fee and you return it once you’ve completed breastfeeding (3 months, 6 months, 12 months). If you want to register for a cheaper, portable pump (to take when traveling), that’s a good plan, as well. It will help on family trips and/or even when you’re in the car on long travel trips.
I’ve heard great things about Charleston, as well! I think that would make an excellent babymoon 🙂
Bridget says
We ADORE Charleston! My husband & I honeymooned there & it will always hold such a special place in our hearts! We stayed at a nice hotel (thanks to my very generous in-laws) and I would recommend Charleston Place if you feel like doing something a bit fancier. As far as sight seeing goes, we loved touring around and just walking through Charleston every day, taking in the sights! So many yummy restaurants to stop by, I would say two “must dos” are Dixie Supply Bakery & Cafe (pecan pancakes = heaven) and Hank’s for some out of this world seafood. We also enjoyed treating ourselves to praline ice cream at Jestine’s Sweet Shop. So jealous, I hope you decide to go!
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
Hahaha, I laughed out loud at the FOTB reference! Too funny! And you look so cute, as always!

I’m bummed your Alaska trip didn’t work out, but have fun on your upcoming mini trips! I’m glad to see you’re taking a breastfeeding class. There is so much so learn! I am a La Leche League leader and getting good information early on is key! If you can find a LLL group in your area, it would be great to start going to meetings to get more info…:) Email me if you have any questions!
Jenna says
Oh my gosh, I love Charleston so much! You definitely need to eat at FIG!!! We had the best experience there and all of the food in wonderful. Exploring the local plantations is also fun, but you need to bathe in bug spray before you go.
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
When I was pregnant with the twins, I could not believe how winded I got doing simple tasks. It got to the point where I had to resort to taking the elevator at work because I just could not do the stairs. Walking to and from the parking lot to my office building felt like running a marathon. It was crazy!
We took a Baby 101 class. I did think it was helpful in teaching you the basics (like diapering, bathing, feeding, etc.), so I would definitely recommend taking something like that.
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
Awww, such a bummer about the trip! But I guess it’s for the best, they’re just trying to keep you safe and healthy! Also, you’re looking SO good!!! cutest little bump 🙂 And that watermelon picture made me crave it too… haha
Briana says
Charleston is so amazing, the food is to die for! Magnolias had some of the best shrimp and grits and Mac and cheese. Poogans Porch had a delicious lunch. We stayed at the Vendue Inn its b&b style and so quaint.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
Too bad about your Alaska trip, but it makes much more sense to stay closer to home for your babymoon. Charleston sounds lovely! I’m pretty sure you don’t watch Bravo without cable, but if you do go to Charleston, try and catch an episode of “Southern Charm” first heheh! 🙂
Rachel says
What a bummer about your cruise! Definitely make that trip happen some other time; we went a few years ago and saw TONS of whales. It’s also a really family friendly cruise 🙂
When I was pregnant with my first (I’m 5 weeks along with my second now shhhhhh), we took a breastfeeding class, a childbirth prep class, and a newborn care class. They really made us feel like a team and I know my husband felt more prepared after taking them. He had never held a baby before our nephew was born and he’d never changed a diaper before!
This pregnancy I think I want to take the natural childbirth class. I got an epidural last time but it wore off. They took it out and replaced it but that second one didn’t work at all. I have scar tissue in my lumbar spine from a surgery, so I’m thinking epidurals just might not work for me at all. I would have loved to have been prepared for my accidentally natural delivery last time hahaha 🙂
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
you look so healthy and vibrant!

Honestly I would also be SUPER disappointed in having to miss out on a free trip to Alaska, but it’s probably for the best! I just flew to Rhode Island at 24 weeks for a press trip that involved spending a lot of time on boats and it was more difficult than I anticipated. I haven’t had any issues this pregnancy but both times I was on a plane I felt like I was nearly suffocating from lack of oxygen, and my feet kept going numb from lack of circulation. I’m glad I went….but 24 weeks was definitely pushing it.
Kelly Nemitz says
Girl you are giving me baby fever! I’m getting married next summer so I need to chill out a bit but I’m LOVING these pregnancy updates! So happy for you and Ryan 🙂
Charleston is amazing!! You will love it! My cousin lives there and owns Charleston Rickshaw and Holy City Brewing. The rickshaws are SO fun to ride around town on. Obviously you aren’t drinking right now but if breweries interest you and Ryan, Holy City is definitely worth the visit whether you are drinking or not. I’m obviously bias towards these because of the family connection but all of Charleston is so beautiful and you’ll have a blast no matter what you do!
Gabriela says
I took all the classes and read all the books. They’re informative but pretty much repeat the same information that you can find just about anywhere. And in the end I didn’t believe they were necessary because nothing can really prepare you for parenthood and you just learn along as you go.
Brandy H. says
I LOVE Father of the Bride 1 & 2! Hilarious movies! I actually went into labor at my birthing prep class! It was crazy! We made it through the first half of class and then my water broke. So we missed the last part and the second day (it was a two day class,)!
Shawna says
hopefully you’ll make it to Alaska one day, but enjoy Charleston! i’m headed there in June to visit a friend for a long wknd for the first time and have heard such great things about that city — supposed to be so charming — so i’m stoked for that. you look great!
Christina says
My husband and I signed up for a 6 week class offered by our hospital that covered all the baby basics….only we ended up leaving midway through the third class with me in tears, and never went back after that. I think the class was just making me feel really overwhelmed and stressed out, and I decided I didn’t need that at 30 weeks pregnant. I also took a breastfeeding class, but honestly, nothing can really prepare you for breastfeeding except doing it. Apparently I’m just not a class kind of girl 🙂
Heather B says
These posts make me so excited to be a mother one day haha! Congratulations on your third trimester!

I didn’t take a single baby class when I was pregnant, since none worked with our schedule
I don’t regret it though, even though I had zero baby experience,I Googled and read a bit and the rest just clicked when he got here#

How did your glucose test go yesterday? I hope the needles weren’t too bad <3

My husband and I took a 5 week childbirth class that was helpful when it came to knowing more about labor, and seeing the hospital beforehand. I really wish I had taken a breastfeeding class because breastfeeding is just tough at the beginning. I took full advantage and got a lactation consultant to visit me at home right away after the baby was born and it was possibly the best thing I did post-baby. 🙂

We took a child birth class during my first pregnancy, and although I was disappointed the natural birth class was full, I still felt this was helpful for my husband especially.

You have the cutest little bump! Ha, I always feel like George in our house. Scott likes it FREEZING so I guess I’ll be in luck when that time comes… 😉
