Good afternoon! It’s time for the second installment of the new PBF Favorites series! I started this series on the blog last week and kicked things off by sharing some of my favorite hair products.
Over the course of the next several weeks, I’m hoping to share a few lists of favorites that will touch on a bunch of categories ranging from beauty and fitness to fashion and blogging. And if you have any requests for an upcoming PBF Favorites post, please let me know!
Today’s PBF Favorites post highlights my all-time favorite workout capris and tights/leggings.
I am incredibly picky when it comes to workout capris and tights and feel like I am always on the hunt for the next best thing. I need my workout capris and leggings to be functional, comfortable and flattering. The pants and capris you will find below meet all of these requirements.
Please feel free to share your favorites in the comments section of this post!
PBF Favorites: Workout Capris and Tights
I have these in both black and a dark heather gray and can honestly say they are the most comfortable workout leggings I own. I truly could sleep in them! They aren’t as tight as some of the other pairs I own, but they are still very flattering and I love wearing them for barre and yoga workouts, as well as during chilly outdoor runs or long hikes with Ryan and Sadie. (Moving Comfort’s endurance tights are also a personal favorite!)
Bottom line: Comfortable enough for lounging, but great for workouts, too!
Reebok initially sent me a pair of these capris in a deep purple color before the IDEAWorld conference and I ended up buying them in black as well because I loved them so much. They stay up without a problem during plyometric exercises like burpees and never slip during squats or lunges. The material is also thicker than other Reebok capris I’ve worn, making them more flattering.
Bottom line: They stay in place and are perfect for plyometric workouts.
I only had to wear these tights one time to know they were going to be a favorite of mine. The material is thick and smoothing, but it doesn’t trap heat and make me feel overheated during a workout. And I sneakily wore them under my sweater during my trip to Boulder because I forgot to pack other leggings and loved wearing them as non-workout leggings, too!
Bottom line: Quality, breathable material and a flattering fit!
The perfect leggings for tall girls! I actually have rather short legs (I am all torso!), but I still appreciate longer leggings. These are a fabulous affordable option and I’ve recommended them to some of my taller friends who rave about the extra length. They’re comfortable and functional. I love them for wintertime runs outside.
Bottom line: A great affordable option, offering a longer length than most workout leggings out there.
These crops are probably the best crops I own and I cannot remember where I bought them. (I’m thinking I bought them at a fitness conference, maybe? They’re available online, but I don’t think they ship to the United States. I still wanted to include them for some of my international readers.) The quality is absolutely fabulous and I do not have one negative thing to say about them. I’ve worn them for every type of workout under the sun and they’ve impressed me time and time again. They’re great for running (I’ve worn them during two half marathons!), yoga, barre, boot camp and strength training workouts. The best!
Bottom line: A high-quality crop for almost every workout under the sun!
This is the only pair of lululemon pants/capris I own and I’ve had them for years! Though they don’t fit quite as tight as they used to, they’re still in great condition. The fabric is breathable and sweat-wicking and they’re a personal favorite for running and boot camp-style workouts. (I do not wear them for yoga or barre workouts because the material feels a little too thin for stretching.)
Bottom line: Breathable and sweat-wicking – perfect for running!
I discovered Splits 59 at my local Pure Barre studio and quickly noticed how many of my fellow barre lovers seemed to wear their apparel. It’s quite pricey, but I managed to snag a bright blue pair of their capris on NorstromRack.com for less than $30 and now understand the hype. (I couldn’t find the exact pair online anymore, but most of their capris looks very similar.) I typically wear darker colors on my bottom half, so I was nervous how the blue color would look on me but I was happy to find the material smoothing and the capris have a wide waistband and a low-rise fit that is quite flattering. They stay up during my barre workouts and have quickly become a personal favorite.
Bottom line: A wide waistband and low rise make these tights extra flattering.
- Fabletics Lima Capri
I will actually be going into much more detail about these capris in my Things I’m Loving Friday post tomorrow, so stay tuned! Brief synopsis: I love them!
Bottom line: Fabulous fit with a thick, sweat-wicking material.

Melissa says
The lululemon run inspire pant is my absolute favorite. My sister used to work retail for lulu and got a great discount, so she stocked me up with a full supply of these. I wear them for spinning, rowing, running, and bootcamp style classes. I’ve worn and washed them hundreds of times, and they still look and feel almost as good as new!
Julie says
Yes!! Glad you’re a fan, too. 🙂
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
I have a pair of lululemon capris that an old roomie handed down to me– I LOVE THOSE THINGS! They still are as fitted as they were when I got them 2 years ago. I know the pants are expensive (so let’s be serious, I probably won’t be buying any on my own haha) but dang- if they’re gonna last forever, I guess it’s kinda worth it!!
Lauren says
I have a pair of Lorna Jane capris that I LOVE, but I definitely think my Lululemon Run Inspire crops are still #1. Great product!!
Elissa Quilici says
Love this review Julie! I’m always looking for new comfortable “workout” capris/leggings that can also be work just out and about!
Question on the Fabletics, did you find they run true to size? I’m interested in trying out a pair but I always find sizing tricky! (and I hate when returns aren’t free, thank you Zappos!)
Julie says
I actually do think they run true to size, but I would read the reviews because it seems like some people think those specific capris run a bit small. And I think Fabletics offers free returns, but I could be wrong?
kelly says says
Check all the user reviews on Fabletics. I find them especially useful on the fabletics site, in particular.
Julie says
Agreed!
Elissa says
Ok, another question on this topic, what are you favorite everyday, casual wear legging capris? I’m looking for something to wear under long tops and dresses that is flattering and compressive like workout capris but at a lower price point.
Carrie (This Fit Chick) says
MY FAVORITE workout pants are Lululemon’s In the Flow II. I hardly ever buy from Lulu because its pricey, but these pants are so worth it. I honestly cannot wear any other pair… ever.
Kelsey says
I love my lululemons, btu get frustrated running in them (maybe because they’re stretching out) because until I get a little sweaty, they fall down constantly (as in, the other day, I was running and holding them up at the same time for the first 10 minutes…). I have a pair of Old Navy capris that are my go-to for running!
Julie says
I am continually impressed with Old Navy’s workout apparel! It really is great!
Lila says
Agreed on the lululemon tights! I have a pair of Run Inspire and a pair of the Run a Marathon tights and they are hands down my favorites for all types of workouts. I feel like there should be a separate category for favorite cold weather workout gear because it’s going to be that time of the year far too soon 🙁 ….. I have a pair of Mizuno running tights that have an extra layer of wind protection on the thighs and they are great for runs on snowy days!
Kristy says
Nothing to do with capris or tights, but have you tried Under Armour’s Get Going Shorts? They are amazing and I’ve bought a pair for every day of the week! I’m bummed that here in PA it’s starting to get too cool to wear them on my morning runs, but I wear them for my HIIT class and do take BodyPump. They are so comfy with a really wide, not restrictive waist band.
Also, your boots in your Tea blog post…they are fabulous…where are they from?
Julie says
I haven’t tried their shorts but apparently I should!! 🙂 And about the boots — I actually got them years ago online from a brand called Miss Me (only $30!), but I think they actually stopped making all shoes/boots since then, which is a bummer because I love them! Wish I could be of more help!

I’ve also found them on 6pm.com for cheap!
Amanda says
I love lululemons wunder under (regular length and crops), but for a less expensive option I usually go with Old Navy. Although I love wearing colors other than black (I have purple and gray), I never opt to wear them when I’ll be doing a super sweaty workout and not heading straight home because they show my sweat and it looks like I peed myself!!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
I love leggings with a big waistband– so comfy and flattering!
Kelly says
I’m surprised no one said the Athleta Be Free knickers. They are the only ones I have ever found with pockets on both hips that are big enough for an iphone. I LOVE them simply because of the pockets. They are all I ever wear.
Sky @ Blonde Freedom says
My favorite workout capris are definitely my Reebok ones. They’re thicker and always stay where they need to during squats and any moving activity. Moving Comfort tights are next on my to buy list! I love this series you’re doing!
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
Great post, Julie! Your selections are a great range of prices too. I am currently loving tights by Zella – the Nordstrom brand. I am trying to add more color to my life!
Julie says
I still need to try Zella workout apparel! I’ve heard such great things!
Kristle says
Another vote for Zella. They are the best capris and tights. You can usually find them on sale during the annual Nordstrom’s anniversary sale. Thick, sweat wicking, wide waistband, stay up, and comfy enough for sleeping.
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
I really do realize (especially during winter running!) how important that little back key pocket is! I love all of your suggestions! I’m usually boring and stick with black, but I need to get out of that rut!
Amy says
I love Zella (I heard a rumor they are designed by the same people as Lululemon) from Nordstrom and Lole which I have bought from Amazon.
I love all the different colors you have featured – I need to break out of my black capri rut!
Julie says
I also have a few things from Lole and think their stuff is great as well!
Daisy @ Fit Wanderlust Runner says
For costs purposes I think Old Navy compression pants are a steal! They are super comfy and flattering. My other two I love are my Nike and UA pants. Can’t remember what style or how much but they have lasted me for years. I can’t wear shorts anymore. The chafing has gotten too bad 🙁
Cher Rezac says
Any tips on washing and keeping your workout gear in good shape? Favorite detergents?
Thanks!
Julie says
I don’t put ANY of my workout pants/capris in the dryer. I think that actually helps a lot!!
Kathryn @ Chicks Dig Running says
I just got some Splits59 leggings and I love them but they will definitely be gym leggings because they have the little footie straps.
Some of my favorite capris are by Gap Body. I am very tall (so I’ll definitely be looking into those Old Navy tights!) and I find that most capris hit me right in the back of the knee so that they bunch up when my legs bend. Of course, this gets super annoying during any class or during a run. The Gap capris fall mid-calf, and I love the fit and the material. I’ve been wearing them for years, they’re definitely a staple!
Thanks for sharing your favorites! Also I’ll be looking out for the review on Fabletics, I’ve been eyeing their stuff for a while so I want to hear an opinion on them!
J says
Would you consider doing a favorite things-dog/vizsla addition? Always looking for better gear, toys, food, etc.!
Julie says
Yes!!! Love this idea!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
The Fabletics Lima Capris have quickly become my favorites too! They also have a Rio Run Capri that’s are a little shorter, and they are another favorite of mine.
Julie says
You were the reason I tried Fabletics!!! You always look so cute in their stuff and have such great things to say about them so I couldn’t resist!
Joy Nindel-Edwards says
I think workout capris are one of my favorite things to buy! I’m a recent convert to old navy compression capris and proudly own 3 pairs and wear the heck out of them! I always grab a pair or two when they go on super sale (you can never have too many workout clothes!)
Other faves include Nike Pro-fit capris, they just fit me really well, Marika capris that I can usually snag for under $20 at TJ Maxx or Marshalls, Fabletics Lima even though I typically like to wear them in the winter (since they’re a little thicker) and my current fave are the Glyder Ninja Crops — lightweight, cute as can be (I always get complements on these!) and they STAY PUT no matter what exercise I’m doing. Highly recommend: http://work-sweat-play.com/glyder-apparel/Ninja-pants/
meredith @ The Cookie ChRUNicles says
The Run Inspire Crop II are my absolute favorite!
Linda @ the Fitty says
Leggings are so in right now–I can do everything in them–sports, running, yoga, dance…everything except swimming. I live in leggings.
Julie says
You and me both! Absolutely love them!
Marijke Van Dornick says
Wow! These are all so beautiful. I must admit that I’m not quite brave enough to wear these outside of my apartment – YET! But looking this good is another incentive for me to stay on track, lose weight, get fit, and so on. Thanks, from Mari
Amy Ramos says
I am surprised Zella has not been mentioned. Hands down the BEST workout pants for me. They are a little $$ but their quality is topnotch and they come is bright colors too. Oh, did I mention they make my butt look fabulous???
You can only get them at Nordstrom’s (in store and online). They do go on sale during their anniversary event, which when I stock up.
Julie says
Any pants that make the booty look good are worth a try!! Keeping my eye out for them!
L. R says
Maybe you could do a post on favorite blogs to read? I love discovering new blogs of all different genres!
xo
Kristina Kehoe @Run Long, Live Well says
I really like Target’s workout leggings. They work for running, yoga, and everything in between!
sarah t says
I have long legs and I bought a pair of the Old Navy Active Compression Leggings last year on just randomly because they were on clearance–OMG these are the best!! They are such good quality for the price.
Natalie says
I fell in love with the Oiselle running capri’s! They have a higher waist that never slides and helps hold the “mommy pooch” tight when running. I highly recommend trying a pair out if you haven’t already!
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says
I absolutely LOVE the run inspire crops from lululemon. They are my favorite running pants.
Ashley Pitt @ A Lady Goes West says
My favorite leggings to date are Nike run full-length pants. They fit great and have lasted a long time.
L. R says
Christina M says
I am loving this series so much already! I just discovered Fabletics and I am IN LOVE! I love their bottoms and tops! All super cute and really affordable. I just bought the Switch Back Tee and it is ADORABLE – I can wear it to barre or out to dinner! I really want to try Splits 59 – but it is so pricey, I’d definitely need to find a deal lol I also bought (2) pairs of long Reebok leggings @ Burlington and I LOVE them! 🙂 Plus, I go them both for $30 total instead of $120! Woot woot for sales!!
Julie says
Amazing deal!!! I’m jealous! 🙂 And definitely check out NordstromRack.com for Splits 59 apparel for much cheaper! They update their site fairly regularly!
Elizabeth says
I’d be curious to read a future post highlighting the best non-workout leggings. I have trouble finding ones that aren’t paper thin and flatter my lower half.!
Julie says
Love that idea!! Thanks!
Jess says
Do you have any recommendations for running capris with pockets? I’m running my first half in just under a month (Wine & Dine at Disney!) and I would love to carry my phone & some energy chews in a pocket or 2 while running. I carry my iPod while I run but it’s such an old model it doesn’t take photos! Ha! But I’d love to find good capris with multiple pockets that can fit an iPhone! Thanks!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse says
I love the lululemon capris with the zipper in the back! Also the color of the fabletics capris is super cute!!
Chantal says
Fabletics just started shipping to Canada and I got my first order a few days ago. I have placed 2 more orders since then, so in love! Amazing quality for the price and unique colours and styles.
Random but too bad you didn’t make it to Nelson BC last month. Such a beautiful place, you would love it.
Julie says
Dying to make it out there! My fingers are crossed that it will happen eventually!
Alex says
Gosh, I haven’t worn capris or tights in a really long time with the summer heat and humidity, but Lulu Wunder Unders are some of my favorite to lounge in!
Kristin S says
I love my Fabletics ones but my Zella capris are my all time favorites. They are so comfy and perfect amount of compression.
Jaleh says
Thanks for this! I’m looking into getting a new pair of tights before it gets super cold here in Colorado. Just curious, do ever have problems with your sweat showing in any of these tights? I usually stick with black because I get super self-conscious if I start sweating in less-than-ideal spots (if you know what I mean). Thanks!
Julie says
TOTALLY get what you mean. To be honest, I don’t wear the bright/colorful leggings/capris when I run because of this very reason. I haven’t noticed sweat showing when I strength train in them or wear them during Pure Barre but, admittedly, I do not sweat as much during barre workouts as I do in others like running or plyometric workouts.
Jaleh says
Awesome – thanks for sharing your experience!
Kelly @ Femme Fitale says
Ah, love all of these recommendations Julie! I have a drawer full of Lululemon pants, as they’ve proven to withstand the test of time. HOWEVER! Since moving to Australia, I’ve fallen in love with Lorna Jane tights, particularly the “Amy” styles (all lengths) They’re amazing. They fit perfectly, and I’m still wearing them at 36 weeks pregnant!!! 🙂
I haven’t heard of the Fabletics brand, but I’m curious! Love that color!
Kellen McAvoy says
I was looking into the Fabletics capris so I can’t wait to read your post tomorrow about them! I actually love Target’s Champion line of workout apparel. Their capris are moisture wicking and tight (perfect for running).
Leila says
I too, love my Zella capris! They are my go to pair! On another note, I was wondering if you could recommend work out tops that are longer are meant for long torsos ?? I’ve followed your blog for awhile and feel like you might’ve done a blog post on this before but I can’t remember! Any suggestions you may have would be great! 🙂
Julie says
YES!! This is on my list! Long torso girls UNITE! 🙂
natjtan says
I’m after some new leggings for autumn/winter and like you am all torso and little legs! I normally stick to Lululemon crops as the full length leggings are way too long! I’ll check out your recommendations and fingers crossed some are available in Europe!
Nikki says
Zobha and Beyond Yoga
Lindsay says
I absolutely love Athleta’s Chaturanga tights. I have the capris in teal, bright blue, black and I just ordered them in pink. I have a full length black pair as well. They’re perfect for running and hot yoga – they don’t slip or move and the material is thick. The Lima tights look awesome and I love the color, so cute! I’m going to check them out 🙂
Elissa says
Random question about the Chaturanga tights, is the black a true dark black? My friend has a pair and they seem like a faded black. Almost like a really dark charcoal.
Lindsay says
The pairs I have are a true black! I just double checked their website and the ones I ordered were black but there also is a black heather. Hope that helps!
Kristen says
Do your tall friends buy the Old Navy leggings in the tall size or do they find that the regular length works fine?
Jessica says
Thanks for the ideas! I’ve been a Lulu girl for a long time, but have branched recently into Hard Tail (soooo comfy but they don’t stay up during workouts) and Cory Vines (awesome!!). I also highly recommend Onzie capris! They have awesome fun patterns and are so comfortable. They are a smooth material so dog hair doesn’t get stuck! (so many leggings are horrible with dog hair 🙂
