Last night, as Ryan watched football and I read a new book on the couch beside him, the fantastic smell of cheddar corn chowder simmering on the stovetop made my mouth water.
When I was in Oregon a little less than two weeks ago, I bought a ton of stuff at the Harry & David Country Village and brought it back to Ocala with me. I figured I would save a lot of my goodies for a special occasion, but last night the package of cheddar corn chowder soup mix called to me from inside the pantry.
A lazy Sunday night at home can be special too, right?
The soup came together quickly and made plenty of soup, so I reheated a bowl of it for myself to enjoy for lunch today!
I added an extra cup of frozen corn and some sliced turkey bacon to the soup mix last night and loved the additions.
Even after eating that bowl of soup, I still feel like I’m in a soup mood today. My mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup is the front-runner for tonight’s dinner at the moment!
And now for some random movie talk!
Popular Movies You’ve Never Seen
Every once in a while Ryan and I will be discussing something and he’ll make reference to a popular movie and my face will go blank.
He’ll look at me incredulously and say, dumbfounded, “You haven’t seen that movie!?”
It happened with The Matrix.
It happened with The Princess Bride.
It happened with The Goonies.
It happened with The Sandlot.
(I’ve since seen all four at Ryan’s urging.)
Most recently it happened with The Nightmare Before Christmas. We now have a hot weeknight movie date on the books for later this week so we can rectify this situation. Apparently I must see The Nightmare Before Christmas before Halloween this year.
Truth be told, I’m not really a huge movie person. I get bored really easily and unless the movie really captivates me (or I’m seeing it in the theatre), I have a hard time sitting still and watching a movie from start to finish. Only once in a blue moon do movie previews really intrigue me, so I guess I miss out on a lot of movies other people seem to love!
Question of the Afternoon
- What’s a movie that you’ve never seen that seems to baffle other people when they find out you’ve never seen it?
- What is a classic “must see” movie in your eyes?
My two “must see” movies: Father of the Bride and Christmas Vacation. Two of my all-time favorites!
Andrea @ Barbells and Buttercream says
The Princess Bride is the best! My boys love quoting the one-liners in that movie, and it’s got a LOT of great ones. My kids and husband also love the Nightmare Before Christmas, but I’m not much of a fan. Maybe you’ll like it though. Either way, “Have fun stormin’ the castle!” 😀
Julie says
I have a whole list of movies but never seems like the right time to watch THAT movie. I haven’t seen “The Nightmare Before Christmas” either and someone brought it up the other day!
Kelsey @ Crappy Kid Art says
I’ve never seen Wayne’s World. My friends still can’t believe it.
AJ says
I’m the same way with lots of movies! My boyfriend freaked out when I said I hadn’t seen The Goonies, then he made me watch it. I feel like its just not the same when you’re an adult and I fell asleep during some part of it (which completely upset him).
I haven’t seen Bridesmaids. I feel like my list of “have NOT seen” is much longer than my “have seen” list! I’m ok with that, quality over quantity! 😉

There is something just so satisfying about soup. I make giant batches to eat throughout the week, all the time.
Joanne says
I’ve never seen The Matrix either and I dont intend to!
Danielle says
This is the story of my life. I am THE worst person to see a movie with. I can never sit still through an entire movie which explains why I too, have not seen “all the popular movies.” 😛
Bek @ Crave says
I am someone who usually only likes watching a movie once- but my bf can watch the same movie over and over- how borang!
Sarah says
Confession time… I’ve never seen Titanic as well and it shocks people all the time when they find out! And they’re even more shocked when I tell them I don’t intend on changing that 😉 I’m not a Leo-girl at all 😉
I recently saw Hitchcock’s Psycho for the first time and actually really loved it, although I’m really not into horror movies at all and normally don’t watch any b/c I get paranoid, haha! But I really loved that one and it wasn’t scary at all imho.
Hope you like A Nightmare before Christmas, it’s one of my favourite films 🙂 And I really do recommend all of Tim Burton’s films, they’re both funny and intelligent and I really like that combination 🙂
Cher @ Weddicted says
Christmas Vacation is definitely a must-see! One of my favorites.. and Vegas Vacation!
Rachel R says
I’ve never seen any of the Pirates of the Caribbean.
Katie says
My boyfriend can’t believe I haven’t seen any of the Star Wars movies… but I have seen all three Lord of the Rings at least two dozen times each, so that should count for something in the nerd department! 😉 🙂
Katie says
Oh yah, a must see is Super Troopers!
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud! says
ive still never seen the matrix….or avatar! And up until last year i had never seen City Slickers which Torrance made me watch (he was baffled too)
Liza says
Haven’t seen Caddyshack, Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, or Christmas Vacation. My coworkers are often shocked and horrified when a movie comes up in conversation and I haven’t seen it! I really do need to catch up on all of these and then some!
Liza says
Oh and Julie make SURE you watch The Holiday this Christmas season if you haven’t already seen it before. It is my “must-watch” 🙂
Corey @ When We Wander says
3/4 movies that Ryan was surprised you havent seen — are my FAVORITE!! (I’ve never seen the Matrix) but The Princess Bride is a classic!
Lisa says
A few of the Must See movies for the Fall/Christmas seasons are A Christmas Story, It’s a Wonderful Life, Christmas Vacation. And my absolute must see Halloween movie is Hocus Pocus. I watched this movie probably 100 times between the ages of 7 and 10!!! Now it’s a yearly movie around Halloween time!
Lisa says
Oh and also Space Balls… LOVE this movie! “She’s gone from suck to blow.” I quote this all the time and I think it freaks people out who have not seen the movie or know what I’m referencing (as I usually say at the most random times!)
Melissa says
I love this – I just bought the Nightmare Before Christmas because I’ve never seen it either. I also have never seen ET.
Laura says
I love movies and made a point to add a bunch of classics that i hadn’t seen to my Netflix a while back. But i still have never seen The Goonies, Stand By Me or The Princess Bride. Ive also never seen Godfather 1 or 2 in its entirety!
Sabina says
I get that all the time. The one i’m proud of most is ” Star Wars”. Haven’t seen any of them.
Meghan @ After the Ivy League says
Christmas Vacation is a family tradition come holiday season or any season really. Obsessed with that movie! Can’t believe you hadn’t seen The Sandlot, you’re killin me smallz!!
Chelsea says
It is the complete opposite with me and my boyfriend. I have seen so many movies. Coming from a family who are very big movie buffs. My boyfriend has only watched this to do with history or sports. Go figure haha
Someone mentioned The Sweetest Thing, love this movie !
however I am a huuuge dork and re watch Jurrasic Park way too many times for a 24 year old LOL
Katie says
I’ve never seen Top Gun and it blows. people’s. minds. Clueless is a must see in my opinion!
Carol @ Lucky Zucca says
I love Nightmare before Christmas!! Jesse and I actually dressed up as characters from that movie for Halloween one year!
Jennifer says
I’ve never seen the Wizard of Oz. For some reason it always creeped me out and I never had a desire to watch it.
I’m not a big movie person so there are plenty that I haven’t seen! Including Father of the Bride, Sound of Music, The Godfather series (people get confused by this because I’m from Italy so they just assume that I’ve seen it), Lord of the Rings, and Nightmare Before Christmas.
Lizzie says
I’ve never seen Dodgeball, Step Brothers, Superbad…all those silly comedies! People freak out when they hear I haven’t seen them. Guess they’re just not my cup ‘o tea!
dee says
WHAT in the world is The Princess Bride?! The whole time I was thinking you were talking about The Princess Diaries (with Anne Hathaway)!! I decided to Google it since so many people commented that their husbands/fathers/boyfriends liked it, and I just could not see WHY they’d be so interested in the Anne Hathaway movie..then found out that I actually have NO idea what The Princess Bride is! haha, I must netflix it with my boyfriend…let’s see if he’ll be added to the list of males who enjoy it.
Kara says
A League Of Their Own is a FANTASTIC movie! I used to watch it with my sister all the time growing up. It’s still on TV from time to time and we both always stop what we are doing, text each other that it’s on, and watch it 🙂 and I cry everytime at various parts (especially the end) and my husband thinks its hilarious.
Kim @ The Family Practice says
The Goonies! I’ve seen that movis so many times, it is one of my husband’s favorites. Actually, we’ve been to Seaside, OR about thirty times since we got married and every time we are down there we have to stop in Astoria and see the “Goonie House”
I’m like you – so out of the movie scene. People always drop their jaw when I tell them I have never seen the Wizard of Oz..my husband just shakes his head and tells them “that’s only the beginning! she hasn’t seen ANYTHING” and goes off on a list of movies I’ve never watched. It cracks me up.
Jordan says
I get this all the time, mostly from guys. I have never seen the matrix either. Also I haven’t seen any if the 007 movies, the Spider-Man movies, lord of the rings or the Harry Potter movies. Aside from watching about half of the original Star Wars in my 8th grade class, I have never seen any of the those movies either, much to my boyfriends dismay.
Courtney Tucker says
I get this about the movies all the time too. My problem is that a lot of times I can’t remember what I’ve seen and what I haven’t since most movies don’t really stick with me for longer than a week or two.
I haven’t seen Gone With the Wind though and I always shock people when I say that.
