Last night, as Ryan watched football and I read a new book on the couch beside him, the fantastic smell of cheddar corn chowder simmering on the stovetop made my mouth water.
When I was in Oregon a little less than two weeks ago, I bought a ton of stuff at the Harry & David Country Village and brought it back to Ocala with me. I figured I would save a lot of my goodies for a special occasion, but last night the package of cheddar corn chowder soup mix called to me from inside the pantry.
A lazy Sunday night at home can be special too, right?
The soup came together quickly and made plenty of soup, so I reheated a bowl of it for myself to enjoy for lunch today!
I added an extra cup of frozen corn and some sliced turkey bacon to the soup mix last night and loved the additions.
Even after eating that bowl of soup, I still feel like I’m in a soup mood today. My mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup is the front-runner for tonight’s dinner at the moment!
And now for some random movie talk!
Popular Movies You’ve Never Seen
Every once in a while Ryan and I will be discussing something and he’ll make reference to a popular movie and my face will go blank.
He’ll look at me incredulously and say, dumbfounded, “You haven’t seen that movie!?”
It happened with The Matrix.
It happened with The Princess Bride.
It happened with The Goonies.
It happened with The Sandlot.
(I’ve since seen all four at Ryan’s urging.)
Most recently it happened with The Nightmare Before Christmas. We now have a hot weeknight movie date on the books for later this week so we can rectify this situation. Apparently I must see The Nightmare Before Christmas before Halloween this year.
Truth be told, I’m not really a huge movie person. I get bored really easily and unless the movie really captivates me (or I’m seeing it in the theatre), I have a hard time sitting still and watching a movie from start to finish. Only once in a blue moon do movie previews really intrigue me, so I guess I miss out on a lot of movies other people seem to love!
Question of the Afternoon
- What’s a movie that you’ve never seen that seems to baffle other people when they find out you’ve never seen it?
- What is a classic “must see” movie in your eyes?
My two “must see” movies: Father of the Bride and Christmas Vacation. Two of my all-time favorites!
Amy says
Father of the Bride is the BBEEESSSTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Khushboo says
I think I win in this category- I’ve never seen Titanic, Sound of Music or Mary Poppins. I can, however, quote Father of the Brode 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
oh my gosh! yes, i think you will win. 🙂 at least you’ve seen fatehr of the bride. a winner in my book!
Michelle says
OOOH! My fave subject…Okay so I’ve never seen Caddyshack and pretty much every male in my age range (mid-thirties) thinks I’m absolutely insane for not seeing that one even though I’m a female. Oh and I’ve never seen Spaceballs either. Am I really missing anything there??
A class Must See in my eyes would be Clue because I watched it with my sister religiously about 100 times (no,..really 100 times at least) when we were young to the point that we both have it memorized. I have since found other Clue fanatics on Twitter and will randomly recite a line from the movie when a situation warrants it. It’s a total campy 80s comedy and it’s so silly that it’s funny..in my opinion. 🙂
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
Oh my gosh, Clue is the best movie ever.
Michelle says
Hell yeah it is!! 🙂
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
I first watched Clue in 2nd grade and loved it ever since. We rented that movie SO many times throughout the years and I remember rewinding it over and over trying to look for clues to solve the mystery even though it showed multiple endings.
One of my friends and I have a “Clue and Candy Night” every Fall just so we can quote this movie and laugh at the cheesy humor. I want the soundtrack to the movie so bad!
peanutbutterfingers says
ryan was shocked that i had never seen caddyshack either! and i’ve never seen clue. 🙂 i love how many times you and your sister watched it!! ha!!!
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
You have to watch Clue! It’s so great! The cheesy humor, music, and special effects just make it so wonderful!
Alison says
Omg, I thought I was alone in my love for Clue!!! When I was a kid I thought the Singing Telegram Girl was the funniest thing in the world. So campy, so great!
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
She was my favorite, too!
Kara says
Another Clue lover here! I feel like that movie was a huge part of my childhood! My sister and I used to re-enact the singing telegram girl scene over and over!!
kyla says
Yay for all the Clue lovers! We performed Clue in high school and I played Yvette. Best part ever.
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
Hahaha, love it.
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
I have seen a lot of movies since getting married. But I wasn’t always good at keeping up with them. All three Lord of the Rings were out on dvd before I ever watched the first one. I still haven’t seen any Harry Potter movies, and only just recently saw Twilight.
I think every one should watch Pride and Prejudice and Mansfield Park. Beautiful movies!!
Rachel says
I have to say it haha you’ve never seen the nightmare before Christmas?!?!?! OMG LOVE THAT MOVIE haha! It’s kinda creepy in a way, and the animation is very Tim Burtoney haha but I like it 😀
hmmm I tend to just see little kid movies haha so whenever anyone names a big person film they’re in love with chances are I’ve never seen it haha…and I’ve never seen Father of the Bride lol
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
Oh I am so glad I am not the only one this happens too. My boyfriend has seen like every single movie out there and always quotes them and always says whats that from?? I’m like uh I don’t know, the only movies I can quote are mean girls and the sweetest thing ha! I also have to see the nightmare before Christmas! there is a running list of movies I “must see.”
Krista @ Blonde Aesthetic says
This happens to my husband and I all the time. You’d think that the Brit in the relationship would be the more likely to have not seen “American classics” but nope. It’s all me. I thought his head was going to explode when I said I had never seen the Godfather or BBCs Pride and Prejudice…
Kim says
… I’ve never seen Titanic …
Casey says
You must see it. One of my top five favs for sure!
Rachel Donald says
I have never seen Forest Gump. I have been to Bubba Gump a few times and understand most of the references, but people just assume I have seen the movie. I should watch it sometime… lol
I absolutely loved “Little Women.” Especially when I was sick when I was younger, or when its really cold outside and you want to curl up with a long, quiet movie — it’s my favorite! 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Love “Little Women!” The book is fantastic too!
Kaylyn says
I am the SAME way!! My boyfriend gets so mad at me because I even tend to fall asleep in movie theaters if the movie isn’t captivating enough…. we try to stick to going to movies before 7pm or it’s almost a waste of our money. 😉
Glad to know I’m not the only person out there who isn’t a movie person! I also have never seen the Nightmare Before Christmas!! Maybe I’ll put that on our must-see list for a hot date night this week as well! I know it’s on tv allll the time right now.
peanutbutterfingers says
ABC Family, babyyyy! we’re DVRing it whenever they play it next. 🙂
Kaylyn says
haha YES!!
Tori K says
I’ve definitely been there…never seen any of the Star Wars movies! However its on my list of to-dos sometime in the future…
But my must see’s are definitely the classic Hook with dustin hoffman & robin williams (such a fun movie for imagination), and the timeless You’ve Got Mail!
Ericka says
That sounds like my fiance and I with movies! We both like to watch movies and so our Friday nights are usually our “date nights” where we go to the movies or rent some. We’ll get on the subject of movies and he starts talking about one and I tell him that I’ve never seen it and he can’t believe it!
When we first started dating, he was dumbfounded that I hadn’t seen any of the Star Wars movies before, so we had a marathon day where we watched Star Wars all day. I’m glad I’m not the only one that hasn’t seen all of the “popular” movies 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ve never seen any of the star wars movies either! and i’m sure your star wars marathon made his day!
Beks says
If you ever get around to it, ignore the new ones. Watch the originals and ogle the eye candy that is Young Harrison Ford.
I tried to watch them in chronological order a few years ago, and by the end of Episode III, I was so depressed that even though I knew what was coming (love the originals!), I couldn’t do it.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Well I’ve never seen the matrix or the night before Christmas. I think Forest Gump is a classic, and as or chick flicks, Where the heart is!
Paula says
My husband is a huge movie person so we watch a lot of them – but sometimes I don’t like them enough to remember them (or at least their titles) so our conversations more often go:
Him: In the movie ________ …
Me: Never heard of it
Him: We saw that together
Oops
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
I do the same thing! But if I really liked it, I remember everything about it!
Christa says
Ahhh I’m the same way with movies! My husband was in total shock mode when he discovered I hadn’t seen Lonesome Dove. Seriously. If you have a hard time sitting still in a movie, definitely don’t watch this one. It’s 6 hours long. I’m not even joking a little bit. I have seen it once in the time I’ve been married and it’s my husband’s favorite movie. If he quotes any line from it, he’ll say, “What’s that from?” like I’m supposed to know. Sheesh. Men.
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
This post made me laugh out loud. I’m the same way! I try explaining to my husband that I’m just not a movie person. He doesn’t get it. I get so distracted, so unless it totally captures my attention, I’m usually doing something else within about 15 minutes of the movie starting. 🙂
Needless to say, I never get any movie references when we’re hanging out with friends. Never.
Samantha says
That is totally me with movies. It is VERY hard for me to sit still through a movie and concentrate.
Samantha says
You never saw the Goonies?! LOL. Best movie ever.
I haven’t seen the Sandlot however, so all is even. I remember it took me forever to see the Notebook and The English Patient. I heard about it on end whenever I admitted I hadn’t seen either.
Katie says
I’ve never seen any of the Star War’s movies. My boyfriend was shocked, so he is gotten me to start watching them. 2 down so far, its a wine and movie star wars date night
Shanna says
What is it with guys and The Princess Bride?? I have never seen the whole thing either but my husband loves it! I don’t get it.
peanutbutterfingers says
i know!!!! when i watched it with ryan, i kept saying,”wait, you seriously like this movie!?” over and over again. i was shocked! it didn’t seem like his kind of movie at all. it must be nostalgic or something. 🙂
Dione says
Oh Julie I can quote this movie from beginning to end!:). It’s considered a cult classic now. Even my dad loves it and went around saying “inconceivable!” all the time the first time he saw it. There’s something for everyone in it.
Michelle M. says
I do not get the Princess Bride either. My husband however, thinks it’s hilarious! ugh.
Taryn says
Ah, I LOVE The Princess Bride! One of those cult classics that definitely didn’t do well when it came out hah.
Alysha @Shesontherun says
That soup looks like it would hit the spot right about now! I think Mean Girls should be on that list too! A friend was telling me she hadn’t seen it and I was thinking, “What rock have you been under!?”
Robyn says
I have seen all of those movies, up until recently, I had not seen Top Gun or Star Wars (thoughts: meh and omggimmeanewoknow). I still have yet to see any of the Indiana Jones movies… the boyfriend is shocked and appalled. 🙂
Julianne says
OMG, you mean I’m not the only person who doesn’t “do” movies?!?
If I’m ever suckered into one at home I’m usually multi-tasking (aka painting my nails or folding laundry)
“Don’t pause it just for me…I swear I’m watching :/ ”
If a movie isn’t REALLY good, It’s seriously a torture device!
Michelle says
Anything with Adam Sandler! That man never fails to crack me up!
Natalie @ Free Range Human says
Julie, if you add When Harry Met Sally onto your “must see” list then I would say we are definitely kindred spirits! Until recently, I had never seen the Lord of the Rings movies (still haven’t seen the last one). My husband insisted that I watch them, and I can now honestly say I wasn’t really missing anything.
Beks says
I fell asleep through one and two (to be fair on “The two towers,” we were sitting front row, center on opening weekend), and stayed away during three, but unless you’re a Tolkien geek, you’re not missing much.
Ashley @ LibertyBelles says
I am totally in the same boat. I just don’t really like movies that much. I was doing some blog stuff on the computer this weekend and the bf wanted to watch a movie, but we could only watch if I stopped what I was doing….we never watched the movie.
I do however like tv shows! I’m loving Revenge and Homeland right now!
Angela @ Health's Angel says
Hahaha this is so me. I get made fun of/a lot of surprised looks when I say that I haven’t seen certain movies…like any of the Harry Potters or the Lord of the Rings, just to name a couple off the top of my head.
My favorite movies are often Lifetime movies- no shame. I also love random 80s and 90s flicks.
Jessica says
This happens to me all the time! My big ones are The Sixth Sense, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and the Matrix
katie says
what a fun question! first off father of the bride= best movie ever along with home alone and parent trap!
hmm ive never seen avatar, hunger games, twilight, nightmare before christmas, lord of the rings, princess bride, paranormal activity,…yea alot more! lol
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
Yeaaaaah Home Alone! Love that one!
Dana says
I am pretty bad with this haha I have yet to see Titanic, Sixteen Candles, any of the American Pie movies, a bunch of disney movies (beauty in the beast, snow white, peter pan…), my friends say I was deprived as a child, but truth be told I just didn’t spend much time in front of the TV I always wanted to be outside! Oh and I haven’t seen all of Anchorman until this year because my boyfriend could not believe I haven’t seen his favorite movie.
Sara @ Magia e Pasta says
I get this all. the. time. from my boyfriend when it comes to the Matrix or Star Wars. He thinks I have had the most deprived childhood because I have never seen them. My must-sees are Lion King and When Harry Met Sally – LOVE them!
Mrs Type A says
My husband couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen the Goonies, either. I told him I used to watch Disney movies on repeat when I was a kid instead! 🙂 Another one I haven’t seen is Back to the Future. Not sure how I missed that one.
I absolutely LOVE Father of the Bride. I watch it every single time it’s on TV and recently dvr’ed it so I just have it queued up if I need it!
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
I’m commenting again because I thought of another one. A Christmas Story…the classic about the little boy who wants a BB gun for Christmas. One of my very best friends hadn’t seen this movie (her whole life!) and so we changed that last Christmas!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
i saw that movie for the first time within the past three years! i won it on dvd at a little raffle thing at my old job, so i finally watched it. 🙂
Laura @ LauraLikesDesign says
Haha, it’s so dumb but so wonderful all at the same time! I remember there being a marathon on tv of it back to back on Thanksgiving each year as a kid.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
While I was living in LA, I made a lot of people crazy over how few movies I’ve seen. In fact, even in college I was often told I lived “under a rock” because people just couldn’t wrap their minds around it.
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
Whaaaat? Nightmare Before Christmas is one of my all time favorite movies! It’s definitely a must see 😉 That being said, I’m not really much of a movie person anymore either. I have a really hard time actually sitting through an entire movie, so unless it’s something I’m super stoked on seeing, chances are I won’t even bother and I’ll spend time on the computer or reading instead.
Krystina says
Haha this happens to me ALL the time! Most movies that “everyone” has seen, I’ve never seen…such as, Goonies, Sandlot, Top Gun, Scarface, Caddyshack, Tombstone, and the list goes on. My fiance gives me a hard time for this and has convinced to watch several of them with him. What can I say, I was busy watching all of the “real” hits during my younger years, including She’s All That, Now and Then, Never Been Kissed, and every other teeny bopper movie that’s ever been made! 😉
ashley says
was the sandlot reference associated with the quote, “you’re killin’ me, smalls!”?? classic movie!!
Kristin says
Never seen A Christmas Story (though I’ve seen most every other Christmas movie ever made). Never seen Lord of the Rings (there’s more than one?). Never seen most classic guy movies. Seen pretty much every good chick flick and some mediocre ones. My movies that everyone should see and love are When Harry Met Sally, Bridget Jones’s Diary, and About a Boy (there’s more, but not to overwhelm). If you loved Father of the Bride you should watch another great Steve Martin movie, Parenthood.
Amy H. says
I think an easier list to make for me would be of movies I have seen! My freshman year of college, my roommate and I joined Netflix and she made me watch a lot of the movies I’d never seen (like Titanic, Jurassic Park, The Notebook, etc.) There are still many more that I’m missing out on!
Lyndsay says
Shawshank Redemption! My boyfriend is always trying to get me to watch it (since apparently everyone else already has!), but it seems SO sad! Can’t bring myself to watch it! On the other hand, he hasn’t seen Titanic- so I think we’re even! 🙂
HeatherO says
Okay are you ready….
I’ve never seen A Christmas Story, Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, or any John Hughes movie for that matter. A Christmas Story is the one people can’t believe. And every year I say I’m going to watch it and I never do.
Emmy says
Hello
Delurking to say that I have not seen three of teh four on that list! Only seen the goonies (which is great!). My list of not seen movies is endless. I too get bored easiy and prefer reading or readding blogs etc!
I’ve not seen pulp fiction, fighy club, terminator, mad max, alien, most james bond…..it really is endless.
Glad to see I’m not alone!
Brittany @ Proteinandpumps.com says
I’m not a huge movie person so there have been a ton of those moments for me. Most recently it was over Rocky. That’s right, I’ve never seen it! My must-see’s are Goodfellas and Clueless. lol.
Alison says
I agree…Clueless is one of my all-time favorites!!
Beks says
That’s never been a problem for me. I am the movie QUEEN! (That was even my username for EVERYTHING up until last year, when everything got hacked). I also speak in movie quotes. I am that geeky person. However, I am an AMAZING “Scene It” partner. 😀
Sami says
This is hilarious to me! My boyfriend and I are both serious about movies! We actually spent our first date arguing about whether or not Tom Cruise was a good actor and if I could see him again because he hadn’t seen the Godfather (weird, I know b/c I’m a girl – but it’s one of my must-sees.)
It’s always a huge shock if there’s a movie the other hasn’t seen. I have also never seen the Nightmare before Christmas and that has now been mandated for pre-Halloween viewing haha.
I LOVE Christmas Vacation & Father of the Bride (have you ever seen the original with Elizabeth Taylor?)
Holly Jo says
My work gives me free movie tickets for floating to another unit/floor.
I’m not a big movie-watcher either, so I end up with a stack of AMC tickets sitting on my desk. -___-
Annie says
Same here! My boyfriend made me watch all the star wars when we started dating but I have to admit I really liked them! I never seem to be able to watch an entire movie on my own without having to pause a few times because I’m distracted. Of course this doesnt happen in the cinema but I cannot for the life of me sit through a movie without doing something else at least once!
Have never seen matrix either or the goonies but nightmare before xmas is one of my favs!
Nicole says
Any of the Austin Powers movies. I haven’t seen any of them. I had never seen Tranformers or The Mummy and once I did, I LOVED them.
The Kidless Kronicles
Carly Moorehead says
My must see movie is Hocus Pocus! It is one of my all time favorites!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
YES!!! excellent choice.
Lea @ Greens and Coffee Beans says
I feel the same way about movies, I just get really antsy and have a hard time sitting still during them. So there’s a lot of popular one’s I haven’t seen. But I have seen Nightmare Before Christmas!
Ellen @ Wannabe Health Nut says
As Good As It Gets…I’ve seen that movie at least 200 times. I wish I was kidding. I just looove Jack Nicholson. He’s so cool.
