Last night, as Ryan watched football and I read a new book on the couch beside him, the fantastic smell of cheddar corn chowder simmering on the stovetop made my mouth water.
When I was in Oregon a little less than two weeks ago, I bought a ton of stuff at the Harry & David Country Village and brought it back to Ocala with me. I figured I would save a lot of my goodies for a special occasion, but last night the package of cheddar corn chowder soup mix called to me from inside the pantry.
A lazy Sunday night at home can be special too, right?
The soup came together quickly and made plenty of soup, so I reheated a bowl of it for myself to enjoy for lunch today!
I added an extra cup of frozen corn and some sliced turkey bacon to the soup mix last night and loved the additions.
Even after eating that bowl of soup, I still feel like I’m in a soup mood today. My mom’s homemade chicken noodle soup is the front-runner for tonight’s dinner at the moment!
And now for some random movie talk!
Popular Movies You’ve Never Seen
Every once in a while Ryan and I will be discussing something and he’ll make reference to a popular movie and my face will go blank.
He’ll look at me incredulously and say, dumbfounded, “You haven’t seen that movie!?”
It happened with The Matrix.
It happened with The Princess Bride.
It happened with The Goonies.
It happened with The Sandlot.
(I’ve since seen all four at Ryan’s urging.)
Most recently it happened with The Nightmare Before Christmas. We now have a hot weeknight movie date on the books for later this week so we can rectify this situation. Apparently I must see The Nightmare Before Christmas before Halloween this year.
Truth be told, I’m not really a huge movie person. I get bored really easily and unless the movie really captivates me (or I’m seeing it in the theatre), I have a hard time sitting still and watching a movie from start to finish. Only once in a blue moon do movie previews really intrigue me, so I guess I miss out on a lot of movies other people seem to love!
Question of the Afternoon
- What’s a movie that you’ve never seen that seems to baffle other people when they find out you’ve never seen it?
- What is a classic “must see” movie in your eyes?
My two “must see” movies: Father of the Bride and Christmas Vacation. Two of my all-time favorites!
Lindsey says
Don’t feel bad, I’ve never seen any of the movies you listed (including Nightmare Before Christmas).
Star Wars/Trek and those Dinosaur movies (Land Before Time?) always make people upset because I’ve never seen them.
I think When Harry Met Sally is a classic (my sister and I quote it all the time, but I feel sure that my husband and male friends would have no clue what we’re talking about – but it’s still a classic in my eyes!).
Have you seen So I Married an Ax Murderer? It’s so great and should be on everyone’s must-watch list!
Claire says
I love this question! Sometimes I just totally miss things. I’ve also never seen the Matrix or the Princess Bride. I’ve never seen any of the American Pie Movies, Pirates of the Carribean, Star Wars, or Lord of the Rings.
I’ve also never seen an episode of the Office or Sex and the City. Or eaten a chicken nugget.
Daria says
I have never seen the Matrix and the Princess Bride too, as well as the Star Wars. They are just not the kind of movies I think I’d like. But maybe I should make a point of watching them to avoid the incredulous questions like you described. 🙂
On a different note, I’ve been following you blog for a while and I’ve noticed that you stopped making the dinner post, so it’s two posts a day down from three. Is that intentional or you’re just too busy with other stuff at the moment (like, personal trainer certification) and will go back to the usual three posts a day once you’re more free?
Christine says
Forest Gump is a must…it’s so creative and well written! And the fact that is pulls in some many parts of American history is just amazing, a well done movie!
Love Christmas Vacation!! My favorite seen is when Clark chuggs the egg nog, LOL granted there are a million favorite parts!
Another must see during the holidays: A Christmas Story!
Movie I haven’t seen: Harry Potter. I tried watching the first one and it put me to sleep 🙁
Marielle says
This totally sounds like my me and my husband. He’s a huge movie person and I like shows better bc I get antsy just like you said. He’s shocked that I’ve never seen any of the Kill Bill and Godfather movies, as well as Braveheart. But these are all boy movies, he doesn’t understand that! Lol.
Id say my must see movies are “ferris buellers day off” and “dont tell mom the babysitters dead.” ive seen both of these at Lear 50 times and they never get old!
Renee says
Movies I’ve not seen that I get the shocked response about?
Last night my boyfriend about died because I’ve never seen “Indecent Proposal.” And the other night he was doing the famous Jack Nicholson quote from “A Few Good Men” and I said, “You know I’ve never seen that movie?” His jaw dropped. He couldn’t believe it. I know there are others, but not many. I love movies and I’m an English Lit major, so I have taken film classes. I haven’t seen a lot of recent movies, but I love 80s movies, especially Brat Pack movies. To me, if you grew up in the 80s, these are must sees:
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
Pretty in Pink
Fast Times at Ridgemont High
Ferris Beuller’s Day Off
St. Elmo’s Fire
Dirty Dancing
Pretty Woman
We went and saw “Pitch Perfect” last night. It’s a really cute movie, but there was a major reference to “The Breakfast Club.” I ask my boyfriend if he’s seen it. Nope, he hasn’t. So we went and bought it and tonight, we are watching it. We both grew up in the 80s. I told him there is no way he’s going another night without seeing one of the most iconic 80s movies.
Megan@ The Running Doc says
I’ve never seen any Indiana Jones or Star Wars movies. To be honest, the list of movies I haven’t seen is very, very long. I’m just not a movie person and unless I’m watching in the theatre I’ll probably fall asleep even if it’s a movie I’ve been wanting to see!
Nicole says
I can totally relate to this! My hubby is a movie buff and is always quoting them, and I usually have no idea what he’s talking about. Unlike you, I do love movies and have seen most of the ones he quotes, but apparently I have movie amnesia. I can watch a movie and then have no recollection of it later on. I haven’t decided if this is a gift or a curse! Have fun watching The Nightmare Before Christmas… I’ve definitely seen it but could not tell you anything about the plot at this time. 😉
Tina nobles says
I have NEVER seen Charlie and the Chocolate factory, it just seems scary. Tried it and had to turn it off. Or any of the Twilight movies EEEKK!!!
And, a must see is the American President!!! I can quote every word. : )
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
I’m the same way with movies… I rarely have a serious urge to see them! The same thing always happens to me too, I NEVER get popular movie references!
Jennifer {Pure & Simple Organizing} says
Ditto on The Sandlot and The Goonies. I think it is a guy thing.
I got the same look regarding “Remember the Titans”.
Yes we have watched it now — great classic.
Annette@FitnessPerks says
I haven’t seen that one either. Or the Sandlot. I know, I know.
I love movies, actually. Such a fun time to get lost in a story!
janet says
I have not seen ANY of the Godfathers or Lord of the Rings. Or Matrixes. Or Twilights. Or Star Wars.
Hidden faves? Mister Roberts!!! Malice. Jack and Sarah. Waitress!!!!!!!!!! The Visitor!!!!
I seem to like odd movies!
Jenica says
Oh my gosh, I’m the exact same way with movies. I just don’t love them! My partner LOVES movies, so I watch them for his sake, but I haven’t seen a lot of classics, like Star Wars. Nightmare before christmas is a lovely one though, I hope you enjoy it!
Melissa says
I’m the same way! I actually really like movies, but I’m terrible at actually seeing them. I’ve had the blank face thing waaaay too many times. I don’t think I’ve see The Nightmare Before Christmas all the way through either.
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
Love Christmas Vacation! We watch it at least a couple times every holiday season. Never fails to crack me up!
Christina says
I currently have Good Will Hunting waiting on me at my boyfriend’s request after finding out recently I can’t remember ever watching it. We have these conversations all the time. After having known each other for nearly a decade, you would think he wouldn’t be so surprised that I’ve never seen certain movies.
Christina @ livedreamrun.wordpress.com says
My husband couldn’t believe I’d never seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and to this day, I have yet to watch it.
Patch Adams is my FAVORITE movie of all time, and I highly recommend it. And of course, P.S. I Love You and The Family Stone.
Cel says
MEAN GIRLS! aaaand The Notebook 🙂
Samantha says
I am the same way! I do like movies… but I prefer TV shows.. haha. One of my best friends is a movie FANATIC and I get those kinds of reactions all. the. time.
We made a list once and it is still quilt long.
Sam @ Better With Sprinkles says
Yes, You absolutely much watch the Nightmare Before Christmas! Definitely my favourite holiday movie – I watch it at Halloween and Christmas.
Popular movies I never saw:
I hadn’t seen the Princess Bride until about 2 months ago
Fight Club
Good Will Hunting
I feel like I need to watch Fight Club at some point!
Alysia @ Slim Sanity says
Nightmare Before Christmas is my fav!!! You will love it, it’s so cute 🙂 I own it on DVD haha. I need to pull it out and watch it soon
Laura says
I’m glad I have not watch star wars, or matrix, or lord of the rings, seen parts of 1 or 2 and I sat there like what people actually are obessesed with these movies?! I always want to watch Hocus Pocus at halloween and my bf makes fun of me, but it is a movie he will watch unlike some others such as the notebook or pretty women. But he likes Father of the Bride even though he usually refueses to watch chick flicks
Julie @ Sweetly Balanced says
I looove movies!! One of my favorites that I used to watch all the time is Almost Famous!! Such a good one. Popular movies that I never saw (And still have no interest in seeing) Star Wars, The godfather…
Alison says
Love this post!! I hadn’t seen Titanic until a few years ago and thought I was the only person on the planet who hadn’t seen it! lol I also just watched Shawshank Redemption for the first time this year.
Some of the “popular” movies I haven’t seen are:
Sandlot (I’m with you on that one!)
Gladiator
Transformers
The Matrix
I agree that Father of the Bride and Christmas Vacation are must-sees! We watch Christmas Vacation every year — it never gets old! 🙂 I would also add Home Alone to that list!
Alison says
Ohh I forgot to add that Mrs. Doubtfire makes my must-see movie list! Love it!
Tess says
We are HUGE movie people and have seen a million movies. Hands down if Shawshank Redemption comes on we will all wander into the room and sit down and watch it. And yes, we own it. Hello? Commercials?
When Titanic came out I had a HORRIBLE nightmare (I cannot explain but it was really quite bad) about my son being on a ship and we could hear him calling us and he was little and he was drowning. It was really really horrible. When I woke and went to hold him…he was gone. He’d gone to a sleepover. I’ve never been able to watch it.
The other day it came on and they put it on while I was at the store. I came in the door and I lasted about two minutes before I said, “okay…ya’ll know I can’t watch Titanic so I don’t care if you put it on ANY other TV but I can’t have it on this one in the kitchen”…. wallets came out and everyone started passing out money. They took bets on how long it would take me before I caved and said I couldn’t watch it. I just.can’t.
Alexandrina @ The Cardio Queen says
I’ve never seen the Matrix either.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is such a great movie! My family and I watch it every year. For us, it’s the start of Halloween and the Holiday season!
Sarah Elizabeth says
I am EXACTLY the same way with movies! My boyfriend always gives me such a hard time. That’s so funny; I’ve never heard anyone experience the same thing. This is why I love your blog! Well, part of it anyway =)
Carli says
The Nightmare Before Christmas is my favorite movie. No contest.
Also, everyone should see The Children’s Hour. It is so unexpected for the time it was written.
Kayla says
Nightmare is pretty creepy for a kids movie. I get bad feelings watching it haha it’s just kinda weird and the style creeps me out. Its very creative though and I think it’s amazing the way they make those stop motion movies.
Elisabeth says
I absolutely love both of your must sees! I also would add Pretty Woman to that list 🙂
Probably the main ‘classic’ I’ve never seen is The Princess Bride.
Lauren says
I’m glad I’m not the only one who gets bored easily. One shocker that I haven’t seen is Office Space. My husband has been trying to get me to see that one for years! One I’d recommend to you is Real Genius….an 80s classic and Val Kilmer is hilarious!
Nikki says
I don’t think this one has been mentioned yet, but my sister and I used to watch Drop Dead Fred all of the time when we were younger!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I havent seen sooo many classic movies. ET, Jaws, The Matrix, etc etc. I just watch the ones I have the time to see and try and enjoy them!
Stephanie @ Steph's Miles says
This same scenario happens to me and my boyfriend Ryan frequently – he was baffled when I had never seen Armageddon, Tommy Boy and Office Space. I can get bored in movies too, so watching them with my Ryan helps keep me interested. Father of the Bride and Christmas Vacation both crack me up every time!
Ashley @ Life's a Shih Tzu says
I am in LOVE with the princess bride…one of my all time favorite and Nightmare before Christmas was and is a bond that my sister and I share…we used to come home from school and put our VHS version of it in everyday!!!!
I also carved Jack Skellington into my pumpkin sunday evening..its awesome!
tara says
I am so not a movie person either…however, If I am going to watch, its at home, on my couch, cuddling w/husband and pups. I cannot deal w/the theatres, too expensive & uncomfortable.
Rachel says
I am a huge movie person, but have yet to see any of the die hard, indiana jones, terminator, or james bond movies. However other classics that everyone should see….St. Elmos fire, Empire records, Dazed and Confused, and Boondock saints. I love the Sandlot!! My husband and I watched this the other night and were just quoting it too each other the rest of the night!
Melissa says
Ah! No Nightmare! That kind of baffles me as it was so popular in the 90’s, but I guess we all do have those movies we’ve never seen. I had never seen the Breakfast Club and both my husband and I always got flack for not knowing what it was. When we watched it, we were totally disappointed with it! Sometimes, I don’t know what all the uproar is about.
Sara says
My hubs is a HUGE movie person. I laughed when I read this post bc my hubs does that dumbfounded “I can’t believe you haven’t seen this” look at me all the time! But I have seen the Nightmare before Christmas and I LOVE it! Its so cute and Tim Burton did a great job!
Lauren says
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the entire Star Wars movie. I know I’ve seen bits and pieces but never start to finish.
Valerie says
I think you would appreciate ‘Best in Show’. It’s a comedy based around people who put their dogs in dog shows. A couple ‘classic’ movies for me are ‘Stand By Me’ and ‘Troop Beverly Hills’.
Danica @ It's Progression says
I had no idea anyone else didn’t like movie watching–I don’t really either!! There are a bunch of movies I absolutely love, but I rarely get excited about watching a new movie…Father of the Bride is one of my favorites too though 🙂
Kayla says
story of my life! I am constantly getting yelled at by my friends when they realize I haven’t seen certain “essential” movies.
I also get really easily bored during movies, and once they’ve been hyped up for me I’m usually let down.
Torie =) says
Yesss! I am right there with you when it comes to having never seen popular movies! My husband and his best friend love to quote movies, and many times, I have to ask them where it is from. I’ve never seen “Braveheart” and I had never seen the first and second Batman movies (with Michael Keaton) or “Howard the Duck” until I met him. I also recently saw “Rain Man” for the first time ever. Now, I will be able to understand all the references!
Oooo! I LOVE “Princess Bride” and so does my husband. That’s our movie! We have “As You Wish” engraved on our wedding bands! =)
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
I’m not a big movie person either. I’m always so out of the loop when friends begin quoting movies!
Megan@funsizedfitness says
I’ve never seen the Lord of the Rings trilogy (although my husband is probably going to change that really soon!)…and a classic “must see” would definitely be Titanic. Best. Movie. Ever. – and amazing in 3D too!
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
I’ve never seen The Sandlot. That wasn’t even a “big” movie, was it?
I’ve never seen The Godfather. This horrifies people, particularly my husband. He forced me to watch Aladdin when I told him I never saw it, so at least I crossed that one off my list.
My must see movie: When Harry Met Sally. My fave of ALL TIME.
Melissa says
I’ve never seen The Nightmare Before Christmas either! My mom wouldn’t let me watch it when I was little because i was scared easily…
I just recently watched the Princess Bride and thought it was pretty good!
I’ve never seen The Sandlot, Lord of the Rings (fell asleep trying to watch the first one), The Godfather, Any scary movies (I am such a baby!), Jaws, any of the Star Wars movies (except #3 I did catch that one on tv!), and so many others!
I love movies but can never catch up long enough to watch older ones!
Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! says
I”ve never seen The Goonies, but The Pricess Bride and Sandlot are definitely two must sees!!!!!
