When you become new parents, people inevitably give you tons and tons of advice. Some of it is incredibly valuable and words of wisdom you take with a grain of salt. One piece of advice we received from a bunch of people was to take plenty of videos of Chase.
They told us his first year will pass by in a flash (if the first five months of his life are any indication, this could not be more true) and before you know it, we would have a hard time remembering what his adorable early morning squeaks and coos sound like.
I’m trying my best to stay on top of videoing our baby boy but I already feel like I’ve missed some moments I wish I would’ve captured! I’m beginning to realize that as a mom it’s impossible to take too many pictures or videos of your baby.
I feel lucky that taking short videos of our baby these days is so simple. Since my phone is typically close by at all times, capturing a quick video on my iPhone is a breeze and Ryan and I already have way too much fun looking back over the videos of Chase when he was a newborn and seeing how much he has changed.
My mom was always pretty good about taking videos of our family as my sister and I grew up, but unlike videos today, all of her videos are stored on VHS tapes that take up a ton of space. And guess what? We never watch them because I’m pretty sure no one in my family has had a VHS player for years.
Enter Legacybox!
Legacybox is a service that digitally preserves old videos and photos. They can take any format (tapes, film, photos, audio cassettes) and transform them into archival DVDs or optional thumb drives and a fancy schmancy Legacybox for storage.
And the process could not be any easier!
Here’s how it works:
- Purchase a Legacybox and once it arrives in the mail, fill it with your memories. Tapes, photos, etc. Whatever you have, they can make it work!
- Place the provided barcode stickers on your tapes or onto the outside of a bag if you are sending in photos.
- When your box is ready, you can simply hand it to your mailman or take it to the post office. Every Legacybox kit comes with a pre-paid shipping label.
- In a few weeks, your memories will arrive at your doorstep on DVDs or optional thumb drives.
(You also receive all of the originals back, just in case you wish to keep them as well.)
I initially wanted to surprise my parents with DVDs of our home movies, but locating their family videos required me actually asking them for their tapes. Even if the end result wasn’t a surprise, I think my parents were still thrilled with the result! The quality was fantastic and all of the DVDs came labeled according to the labeling on the VHS tapes we sent in.
My mom said she’s planning on utilizing Legacybox to transfer the remainder of her VHS collection to more storage and viewing-friendly DVDs and I’d love to send in some of the old photos I have from when Ryan and I first started dating that were all taken on disposable cameras.
Even though the holidays are over, I think digitizing old photos or videos would be such a wonderful Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day gift, especially for the “hard to buy for” folks out there!

I would LOVE this as a way to save memories of my future newborn (I am due in April!). I already struggle to figure out how to organize all my videos and photos, so I can’t imagine what it will be like when I’m taking pictures every day of my little girl! I would greatly appreciate (and use!) something like this 🙂 :).

I would love to have my wedding photos transferred into a digital format. When my husband and I got married 12.5 years ago, the option to have digital images was too expensive (digital photography was just becoming a thing) so we have negatives from our wedding. I’m always worried that something’s going to happen to the negatives and I’d lose the images that are so special. Winning a LegacyBox would truly give me peace of mind and make my heart so happy to know our wedding photos are safe forever.

This is so cool! I would love to gift it to my mom.

When I was in high school, I filmed everything. Family gatherings, my sister’s wedding, driving around with friends, etc. I wanted to be a director and would have my friends put on short skits and funny scenes. An infamous one was where a group of girl friends all brought out our prom dresses and did a mock “Miss Teen USA” pageant. I would love to be able to digitize that and share all these memories with my friends who now live all across the country!

strongly disagree about videos. Though videos and home movies are fun to watch–it is a total time commitment to do so (which is sparse to start with) and time passes quickly and then you lose the current moment.
I find photos are actually a much better way to preserve memories, with a smattering of small videos included taken on your camera phone or other such stuff. I can’t tell you the last time I watched video of my kids and they are 15 and 12.

joined the mailing list. One of my good friends did this for their parents for christmas and it was such a bit hit. My family has a ton of old VHS tapes that this would make converting them into DVDs SO easy! I also have a TON of old photos that I don’t want to see get ruined or faded over the years. Especially ones of family and friends who have passed so my daughter can learn about them when she’s old enough (including her great-grandma that her middle name is after).

My Poppop has at least 50 tapes of my cousins and I growing up, he preserved every memory…Christmases, plays, shows we put on in his basement, sporting events, summers at the Jersey shore. My grandparents are in their mid-80’s and one of their favorite things to do is look back on these memories. We ar afraid that the tapes are going to break one of these days, and we have talked for years about converting them to dvd’s as a gift to my grandparents!!
