According to the general manager of Baldwin Park Uhaul, moving falls third on the list of most stressful events in a person’s life, only after death and divorce.
(What a fun fact to tell two people as they pick up a Uhaul for the day, huh?)
Following my family’s move from Palatine, Illinois to St. Petersburg, Florida in 2003, all of the subsequent moves in my life haven’t been too stressful. I’m assuming this is because I’ve only moved from a dorm to a sorority house to an apartment – all in the same city.
Moving from one city to another, even if it is only slightly more than an hour away, makes things much more stressful. When that city is much smaller and housing is more limited, the stress increases further.
Luckily today’s move went REALLY well! Surprisingly well, actually.
We loaded the Uhaul ourselves before 2 p.m. and met up with our amazing friend Ross in Ocala around 3:30 p.m. He drove to Ocala from Gainesville just to help us transfer all of our stuff into storage.
Talk about a fantastic friend!
Ross’ help made the unloading process much easier! I became “box girl” and unloaded and stacked boxes in the storage unit while Ryan and Ross handled all of the furniture.
Ryan and I were so incredibly grateful for Ross’ help and hit up Smoothie King to treat him to a cold smoothie after the move.
I wasn’t feeling a smoothie (really I just hate paying $5 for a smoothie when I like mine better…), so I headed next door to Starbucks for my own treat where the guys met me and we all sat around to catch up for a bit before Ryan and I hit the road back to Orlando.
Once we arrived home, the options for dinner were limited to whatever food we had in the fridge and freezer and could be eaten without silverware.
I present to you, pull apart pizza!
Okay, fine, so it’s just a regular frozen pizza that we were forced to eat with our bare hands. A little barbaric, but very delicious!
Not a bad little meal if you ask me.
Our plan is to spend the night in our Orlando apartment and then wake up tomorrow to do the final deep clean before we’re officially out.
We kept some blankets and pillows behind and will be camping out on the floor.
(Remember those pics? )
Sleep well, my friends! I’m sure you’ll be sleeping better than we will tonight!
Bye, bye, mousie! 😉
Camping out indoors is what I call camping in style 😉
haha those last pics are hilarious- LOVE it!
This is the stuff that memories are made of… Sleep tight!
I was thinking the same thing!!! What a fun experience to reflect on later down the road 🙂
All you need are some s’mores! Glad the move went well!
I’ve just moved as well and you seem to have a lot more of a positive attitude than I did. I bitched and whined for five days straight where we had no Internet, no tv and no couch.
Sleep well!
I think that Uhaul guy is forgetting about job loss — that has to be higher on the list of stressful events!
I thought of the same thing!!
ooooooo this looks delicious!!!
I hope Sadie is on mice patrol since ya’ll are sleeping on the ground! eek! Glad you’re first move went well today 🙂
Congrats on the first move 🙂 have fun camping!
Hope the rest goes as smoothly as it has so far! Where will you be staying while you wait for a house to open up? Hotel, temporary apartment? Hope you find a place that lets Sadie stay with you!
I think moving stress is dependent on your organization. I once helped my younger brother move into my older brother’s apartment which he was moving out of to move in with his girlfriend who we also moved that day. I showed up at my little bros place to him being completely UNPACKED as in he didn’t even have boxes. And they’d only rented a van not a truck so each house required multiple trips. 16 hours later and I thought I was going to die or kill all three of them for not being ready to move. But we got it done (and than I had to buy my own dinner).
On the other hand, I moved from Toronto to a city about 2 hours out of it. Above and beyond the stress of finding a place in a city that I was completely unfamiliar with the move went well (and than I bought everyone lunch).
Smart move savin’ money on the smoothie… I feel the same way!
My husband and I camped out on the floor in our apartment D.C. last summer before we drove/moved all the way to California. If we can do it, you can do it! 🙂
You are awdfully nice to do a deep clean when the place is full of mice!!!
I wonder what Sadie is thinking … And if she will like sleeping on the floor!?!
Hopefully the mice won’t come out and throw you a goodbye party 😉
I’m glad the day went so well, Julie. 🙂 Have fun camping! What a fun little adventure you and Ryan are on!
Glad to see the move went well…those last pics are adorable!! Here’s to a comfy bed tomorrow night!!
awww, have fun sleeping your last night in Orlando 🙁 You will miss it, but Ocala will just be a great adventure! I have family around that area, and while it is not a big city, it is a pretty little area 🙂 Good luck!
Have fun camping!;) Glad to see the move went well!
Glad the move went so well! Good luck with the final sweep!
Hahahah cute pictures… and frozen pizza is one of the finest creations everrrr
Yay! Glad the move went well 🙂
And you should TOTALLY market “pull apart pizza” I can see it being a sensation 😉
I’m glad your move wasn’t too stressfull! Goo luck with the cleaning manana!
Ross is pretty dreamy!
Good luck with your move! Although it was a tad on the awkward turtle side to bring up moving stress as you are picking up a UHAUL, he’s right on the money with the stress. I work in the apartment industry and I see it every day. It’s rough, but you will find someplace fantastic!
i hope no mice crawl into your sleeping bags!
The hardest part of your move–the packing– is over! Just unpacking left!
Hope your pizza wasn’t from Kashi. They had a recall on their pizzas recently. Congrats on having a smooth move in!
Goodluck tomorrow…
and PS…your evening and gourmet meal looks like a nicer overnight stay than at some of the hotels Ive had the chance to lodge at 😉
Pizza makes everything better. It’s science. Enjoy your night in the indoor wilderness!
That pizza looks awesome! What brand is it?
Kashi!
Moving is streeeesssful!! I dislike it more then the obgyn.. haha!
Camping on the floor with the mousies.. don’t eat in bed;)
I’m moving in less than 2 weeks, so i feel your pain!
Aww, i’m not gonna lie.. i’ve been following your blog for a long time now and seeing y’all move out of your apt is kind of sad to see!!! I guess i just want to see you guy settled and not living out of suitcases forever. I HATE feeling unsettled!!
Good luck with moving!!! That pizza looks delicious!
Those sleeping bag pictures are great. Have fun camping out! Glad your move went well!
I actually like camping out indoors….makes it an adventure!
YAH for moving day 🙂 Good luck!
Pizza is the most amazing food ever. How can so many places use all of the same main ingredients (cheese, bread, sauce) and it all be so different!!!
Good luck with the move…put Sadie to work!
NO MORE MICEEEE!
Happy to hear the move went well! Before you know it you’ll be in wonderful home and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel of all this…and just think, you’ll have an awesome story to tell your kids someday 🙂
I wouldn’t bother deep cleaning your old place since there are mice anyway! And I can’t believe the rental managers were showing your place when they know there is a mouse problem! Anyway, good luck on the rest of your move, hope it’s not too stressful on you guys and especially Sadie!!! 🙂
goodbye mouse-house!
i’m excited for you guys!!!!
i’m sure you’ll find the perfect place to live soon and you’ll say that it was worth the wait! 🙂
Hey Julie,
I wish you the very best for your life in your new house.
Greetings from Germany!
P.S: Because of you, I started a blog in Germany:-)
Thank you for your great inspiration
Haha! Love those sleeping bag pix 😛 So glad the move went well, and that you have such amazing friends to help you! 🙂 So excited for you! <3 xyx
I’m glad it’s going well! It’s great to have friends you can rely on to help out in situations like that.
I feel the same about oatmeal. I refuse to pay money and buy it from out when I can make it 10x better!
Well im sure you’ll sleep better since the most stressful part of moving everything is actually over for now! Im moving at the end of the month, but only a mile and a half down the road.
Have fun in Ocala:) My loveliest memory of that town is on one of my boyfriend and my treks across the state to see his parents (from st. augustine to their house above tampa) my radiator blew right as we got on 75 by Ocala. They have a very nice Auto Zone should you ever need to go lol:)
I love home camping! When I was little my sister and I would camp in the front yard all the time and thought it was the coolest.
Now my nephews have a tent and they’re doing the same thing. You better believe aunty has been chilling in that tent a lot this summer 🙂
Congrats on a smooth move!!
Hey you needn’t stress that much, it’s gonna be a great experience you know, discovering a new city and all.
I love that pic in the sleeping bag, it looks cosy ^^
So if I understand well, you’ll be in a temporary house from tomorrow onward? That’ll leave you plenty of time to discover the place. I’m so excited about your new life in Ocala!
I’m glad that the move when went well! Hopefully you and Ryan will be able to get a better night’s rest tomorrow! Best of luck to you 🙂
