Somebody hurry and revive my credit card! I just dropped entirely too much money on a race entry fee.
But check out the location of the race…
Vegas, baby!
I will already be in Las Vegas for the Urban Running: Blogger Summit that weekend (I’m speaking at the conference… but not about running… unless you care to learn about how to stop caring about your time and how to use Disney music for running motivation.) I know a bunch of other bloggers who are attending the conference are also running the race, so I hopped on board.
The race is just about a month after the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon, so I won’t have to completely re-train my body.
Another cool thing about this race? It’s at night! Running down the Las Vegas strip at night sounds entirely too cool. Plus, I fell in love with Rock ‘n’ Roll races after running the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon and I have a feeling this race course will be unbelievably entertaining.
Even still, I’m sad that I paid more to enter this race than a week’s worth of groceries.
At least it’s for a good cause.
Lunch
Today’s lunch was pretty darn random, but pretty darn delicious.
Tuna salad paired with Annie Chun’s sprouted brown sticky rice that the company sent me to try.
The rice was awesome! Perfectly sticky and ready in one minute. I actually ended up stirring it into my tuna salad and loved the nuttiness that the rice added to the salad.
I feel like I should’ve used the rice in an authentic Asian dish since Annie Chun’s products are “all natural Asian cuisine,” but I was too antsy to wait to use it in a stir fry. Next time!
Question of the Afternoon
- What is the most amount of money you would spend to enter a race or a competition for something you trained for?
For me it all comes down to the race. For a 5k, since they’re over so quickly, I can’t get over spending much more than $25. For a half marathon I would say my limit is $100, but I just proved that wrong today. Oops.
Anne P says
Excited to see you in VEGAS! It’s going to be a blast. It’s my first R&R race – can’t wait to see what they’re like!
peanutbutterfingers says
woohoo! can’t wait! 😀
Hope says
Sounds like an awesome race and that it might be worth the money to spent. It’s going to be so cool running down the Vegas strip at night!
That sticky rice looks good! I bet it would be great in a stir fry 🙂
Victoria (District Chocoholic) says
I just spent over $200 for a race next summer, but it’s a fair price for a 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike. Someday, I may want to do the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, which costs about $2k to enter (and requires extensive prior open water racing for acceptance). I save money on other things, like entertainment (no movie tickets, no cable) or alcohol (don’t drink), so it is not a hardship for me to pay to do races I know I’ll enjoy.
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
Running Vegas at night is going to be awesome!
The most I’ve ever paid was the Disney Princess half last year, which I think came out to be about $100. No bueno 🙁
Jordan @ food, sweat, and beers says
Well, if you’re feeling particularly lucky, you could try to win it back in Vegas…. Then again, that didn’t work out too well for Katy Perry.
Anne P says
Lol!
peanutbutterfingers says
10 points for jordan! 🙂
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
oh dang!! vegas at night?! Never heard of a night race, but it sounds fun~
Ashley says
The most I paid is like $80 bucks for a half marathon (but it’s my first one). I would love to do a triathlon, but some of those are crazy expensive, plus all the equipment you need. Maybe someday. 🙂
Shannon says
That race sounds awesome! Have a great time 🙂
yumm! your lunch looks goood! 🙂
Laura says
The most I’ve paid to date is $150 for the 2012 Boston Marathon!! But I figured it’s probably the only time I will ever get to run it so oh well…
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
Eek—that is expensive for a race for sure. But it sounds like such a fun one! 🙂 I would love to do that!
Sweet and Savvy says
Wow! How fun does That race look! ? Congratulations! 🙂 vaycay And race all rolled into one!
Joey says
I’m running it too! It will be my first big race. I want to meet up! 🙂
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
ah! so exciting! i’d love to plan a meet up!
Joey says
yay! how long will you be in town? let’s plan to catch up closer to that time and make some plans! 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I just paid $100 (well, $107 with fees) for the Philly half in November and I think that’s about my limit. I skipped a local 5K last weekend and one of the reasons was the $30 price tag. That seems a little high to me for 3 miles, especially when it’s not going to any charity.
Jen @ Strides and Glides says
That race looks like so much fun. I did a night race a few weeks ago and it was really neat with all the headlamps. Vegas sounds way more epic though.
My max price for races is around $50 but i’m willing to spend more if they offer a buffet/more prizes/etc.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I was *this close* to signing up for the Vegas Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon too! One of my friends has been trying to convince me, but a couple things held me back. 1) Like you said, it’s not cheap. It’s a little too expensive for the hubs and I right now. 2) Add on a 6 hour drive + a hotel = even more money. Hopefully next year!! That’s awesome you went for it though. I’m sure it’ll be so fun!
Jamie @ FoodinRealLife says
Damn, that race IS expensive!! Sounds really cool though 🙂
Tracy @ Tracy's Treats says
Hooray for registering! That is so exciting and running through Las Vegas seems like it could keep you entertained the entire race! I’m also running 2 half marathons a month apart, and I’m so excited for them!
I think the max I’d spend on a race is also $100. Now that I’ve run a couple races, I rarely ever register for 5k’s because I feel like that distance is too short.
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
I paid $140 for the Disney Wine and Dine. Ugh. Never again.
I think my max for a half is $100 also, but I usually try to find them cheaper or get coupon codes when I can. Las Vegas RnR and really cheap for me (maybe $70?) because I did early registration before they closed it down for awhile. Love that!
Brandi @ The Vitamin Bee says
Yay I’m running the Vegas half too! I ran it last year (when it was still in the morning) and it was a really fun experience. Awesome course and great costumes. There was a guy dressed as Tarzan…he literally ran in a loincloth and nothing else. No shoes…I dont even want to know where he put his timing chip!
The Vegas medals are pretty baller too.
That’s the most I’ve ever spent on a race though. Yikes.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Anything above $50 I’d be asking my parents for as a gift… aka the half marathon I’m signing up for in March will hopefully be a christmas gift! Ugh, can’t wait until law school is over and I have a paycheck! 2 years…
Cynthia @ Cynthia's Adventures says
I will also be doing this race and hopefully attend the conference 🙂 I cannot wait to run Vegas!!!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
so exciting!! i hope you can come to the conference, too!
Hillary says
I REALLY want to run the Disney Princess Half, but psyching myself to spend that much money (for entry and travel) is very, very hard!
Lindsey says
I wanted to go to Vegas so bad for that race and conference but the travel and race budget is tapped, after our trip to Cali for the Disneyland Half Marathon. It was the most I spent on a race – $125 but it was 100% worth it 🙂
rachel says
I spent $400 for the Escape From Alcatraz triathlon! I never thought I would spend that much on an athletic event but people convinced me to do it once and cross it off the bucket list! I had so much fun, the next year I signed up again!! It is truly a fantastic event so if you ever want to tackle a triathlon, that’s the one to do! Once in a lifetime at least and well worth the money!
rachel says
also, it helps to think about how much they have to do put the race on! closing down the Las Vegas Strip in the middle of the night surely costs more money than a 1/2 marathon down country roads!
Colleen @ Jimmy Choos on the Treadmill says
It’s definitely hard to drop a lot of money on a race–especially when you think of all of the other things you could get with that amount of money! I don’t see myself ever running a marathon, but $30 is the most I like to spend on a 5k.
Carrie Purchase says
Im into bodybuilding/fogure competitions, and although the entry fees arent always that pricey, there are other things like all your supplements, food, tanning, suit, etc that go with it all. I always try and set money aside each month so that when the show comes around ill have money saved!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
LOL! I’m sure the experience will be so worth it though! I’ve heard that that is an amazing race. I think $100 would be my limit, but if the race were somewhere that I had to travel to (as in, by plane), I’d probably pay more just for the away-from-home touristy experience!
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
I spent $100 on my RnR half marathon and that’s my limit! For a 5K never more than $30. The one I just signed up for was $27 but my and my hubby are both doing it so its really like $54 that we are spending!
Amanda says
I just dropped some dough this morning when I registered for the Women’s Half Marathon in Minnesota (my first out-of-state half!!).
I normally don’t like going over $100 either, but there are some that I can’t resist like the Disneyland Half and Nike Women’s Mararthon.
Heather@girlyeverafter says
I’ve spent $75 before and usually that’s my limit, but if the shirts and goodie bags are good than I’m willing to be swayed. I’m such a gift bag whore;)
Stephanie says
I did the Ls Vegas RnR half last December and it was AWESOME. There’s so much to look at while you’re running and since it was my first time to Vegas, the perfect way to see the whole strip. You won’t regret spending the money.
I’m a little unsure about the night race, though. I meanit means you have ALL day to fret and get nervous! hahaha
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
i knowwww. i kind of do wish it was during the day, but i think the night will add a neat element!
Jess @ Jess Go Bananas says
Don’t put a price tag on a good time! You go girl!
Gen says
Whohoo! Sounds like a lot of fun!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
Wow, that race sounds amazing! 😀 How cool to run (a) in Vegas, and (b) at night – that’ll be sooo cool, and well worth the money, I’m sure! 🙂 Especially as you will be in the area anyway AND you’re already training for a half now. I’m excited for you!!!
Mmm…that brown sticky rice looks and sounds delicious…love the stuff! <3
I've never entered a running race, but if I am going to yoga workshops £60 is probably the max I would spend…some cost as much as £150 for a day! They're so worth it though, amazing experiences are priceless <3 xyx
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I’m doing the full in Vegas and yeah, the fee killed me. At least it’s Vegas and we get a cool medal out of it. Can’t wait to hear your talk!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
i’m nervous to talk already!
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I ran the inaugural Las Vegas RnR race in Dec 2009 and that race was probably the most fun I’ved had in races.
There were stops along the race where people could get married and plenty of people wearing Elvis costumes running the race. While running on the strip, you see people just getting out of the club looking really fabulous, lol!
It was so cold though that my toes were numbed the whole time. But this time it’s an evening race so that adds to the fun right? They also post your face on the big jumbo tron while running too.
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
oooh that makes me so excited! not for the cold though… eek!
Shan @ toughmotherrunner says
Yay for another Vegas runner!! It is pricy but I think it will be well worth it!! My husband is running it too so we have double the entry fee. Ouch!!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
aw! how nice you guys are doing it together!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
That looks like such a neat race! As soon as my knee gets better I want to sign up for a race!
Liz @ Southern Charm says
I can’t go over $100, but at the same time, maybe if I had a reason to I would? I.e. Vegas!
chelsea says
Gah I can’t imagine spending $100+ on a race! I’m the same way about 5k’s though $25 and for 10k’s I think about $30.
Brooke says
So happy you’re doing this for CCFA!!!! Can’t wait to hear about it!!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
It’s so funny that you just posted about this, because one of my friends from college just asked if I’d be interested in running a 5K with him in Boston in May…but it’s $57. Say whaaat now?! I guess it’s because it’s a “zombie 5K” so all of the runners are chased by zombies or something…but yeah, tell me about that sticker shock! I don’t know if I’m willing to fork over quite that much. :-\
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
HAha. How fun! The race looks seriously awesome 🙂
My limit is definitely 60$ for half, 80 for full, and for tris, I try not to go over 150….but that is HARD. Those things are freakin’ expensive!
i <3 tuna!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I spent $90 for my marathon registration and I’d do it again in a heartbeat!
I so want to run the Vegas marathon but I don’t think it will happen this year.
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy" Girl says
That sounds like so much fun! I had wanted to run in Vegas but am still injured. I think 100 is my cutoff for race fee…unless it’s special.
Holly says
YAY YAY YAY!! SO SO SO happy you are running from CCFA 😀 😀 That’s my favorite foundation (for obvious reasons 😉 ) I was going to run that race too- actually already paid my entry fee..and already made plans to be out there for it, but I actually JUST had to move my registration to next year 🙁 because of my Crohn’s. Kind of ironic, huh?
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
oh i WISH you were doing it 🙁
Steph says
err how much did you pay?! that’s insane for a half marathon. i just did the rock n roll philly and it was $95 which was ridic but I got it half off.
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
I’ve always wondered how those products are! I see them everywhere.
Honestly, the price is what keeps me from signing up half the time, although I’m also registered for the Vegas half! Not sure if I’ll be able to do it, though, bc I’ve been sidelined by an injury since last month..
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
For me, it depends on the “experience” of the race. If it’s a crazy insanely beautiful/exciting course, I’ll pay bigger bucks.. and for more swag and a good after party, I’ll pay up. 😉
If it’s basic and bare-bones, I won’t fork up nearly as much.
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I know it’s a lot of money, but it’s soooo worth it! You wont regret it.
