Race Fee = Credit Card Death

September 22, 2011 by Julie 100 Comments

Somebody hurry and revive my credit card! I just dropped entirely too much money on a race entry fee.

But check out the location of the race…

las vegas rock 'n' roll half marathon

Vegas, baby!

I will already be in Las Vegas for the Urban Running: Blogger Summit that weekend (I’m speaking at the conference… but not about running… unless you care to learn about how to stop caring about your time and how to use Disney music for running motivation.) I know a bunch of other bloggers who are attending the conference are also running the race, so I hopped on board.

The race is just about a month after the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon, so I won’t have to completely re-train my body.

Another cool thing about this race? It’s at night! Running down the Las Vegas strip at night sounds entirely too cool. Plus, I fell in love with Rock ‘n’ Roll races after running the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll half marathon and I have a feeling this race course will be unbelievably entertaining.

Even still, I’m sad that I paid more to enter this race than a week’s worth of groceries.

sadie

At least it’s for a good cause.

Lunch

Today’s lunch was pretty darn random, but pretty darn delicious.

Tuna salad paired with Annie Chun’s sprouted brown sticky rice that the company sent me to try.

tuna salad 002

tuna salad 003

The rice was awesome! Perfectly sticky and ready in one minute. I actually ended up stirring it into my tuna salad and loved the nuttiness that the rice added to the salad.

I feel like I should’ve used the rice in an authentic Asian dish since Annie Chun’s products are “all natural Asian cuisine,” but I was too antsy to wait to use it in a stir fry. Next time!

Question of the Afternoon

  • What is the most amount of money you would spend to enter a race or a competition for something you trained for?

For me it all comes down to the race. For a 5k, since they’re over so quickly, I can’t get over spending much more than $25. For a half marathon I would say my limit is $100, but I just proved that wrong today. Oops.

Be sure to follow PBFingers on Instagram and Facebook!

I'd love to connect with you! I am always so grateful when you let me know you tried one of my recipes or workouts and tag me in your photos or updates. Thank you so much!!!

Sounds like an awesome race and that it might be worth the money to spent. It’s going to be so cool running down the Vegas strip at night!

That sticky rice looks good! I bet it would be great in a stir fry 🙂

I just spent over $200 for a race next summer, but it’s a fair price for a 1.2 mile swim/56 mile bike. Someday, I may want to do the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, which costs about $2k to enter (and requires extensive prior open water racing for acceptance). I save money on other things, like entertainment (no movie tickets, no cable) or alcohol (don’t drink), so it is not a hardship for me to pay to do races I know I’ll enjoy.

Running Vegas at night is going to be awesome!

The most I’ve ever paid was the Disney Princess half last year, which I think came out to be about $100. No bueno 🙁

I just paid $100 (well, $107 with fees) for the Philly half in November and I think that’s about my limit. I skipped a local 5K last weekend and one of the reasons was the $30 price tag. That seems a little high to me for 3 miles, especially when it’s not going to any charity.

That race looks like so much fun. I did a night race a few weeks ago and it was really neat with all the headlamps. Vegas sounds way more epic though.

My max price for races is around $50 but i’m willing to spend more if they offer a buffet/more prizes/etc.

I was *this close* to signing up for the Vegas Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon too! One of my friends has been trying to convince me, but a couple things held me back. 1) Like you said, it’s not cheap. It’s a little too expensive for the hubs and I right now. 2) Add on a 6 hour drive + a hotel = even more money. Hopefully next year!! That’s awesome you went for it though. I’m sure it’ll be so fun!

Hooray for registering! That is so exciting and running through Las Vegas seems like it could keep you entertained the entire race! I’m also running 2 half marathons a month apart, and I’m so excited for them!

I think the max I’d spend on a race is also $100. Now that I’ve run a couple races, I rarely ever register for 5k’s because I feel like that distance is too short.

I paid $140 for the Disney Wine and Dine. Ugh. Never again.
I think my max for a half is $100 also, but I usually try to find them cheaper or get coupon codes when I can. Las Vegas RnR and really cheap for me (maybe $70?) because I did early registration before they closed it down for awhile. Love that!

Yay I’m running the Vegas half too! I ran it last year (when it was still in the morning) and it was a really fun experience. Awesome course and great costumes. There was a guy dressed as Tarzan…he literally ran in a loincloth and nothing else. No shoes…I dont even want to know where he put his timing chip!

The Vegas medals are pretty baller too.

That’s the most I’ve ever spent on a race though. Yikes.

I spent $400 for the Escape From Alcatraz triathlon! I never thought I would spend that much on an athletic event but people convinced me to do it once and cross it off the bucket list! I had so much fun, the next year I signed up again!! It is truly a fantastic event so if you ever want to tackle a triathlon, that’s the one to do! Once in a lifetime at least and well worth the money!

also, it helps to think about how much they have to do put the race on! closing down the Las Vegas Strip in the middle of the night surely costs more money than a 1/2 marathon down country roads!

It’s definitely hard to drop a lot of money on a race–especially when you think of all of the other things you could get with that amount of money! I don’t see myself ever running a marathon, but $30 is the most I like to spend on a 5k.

Im into bodybuilding/fogure competitions, and although the entry fees arent always that pricey, there are other things like all your supplements, food, tanning, suit, etc that go with it all. I always try and set money aside each month so that when the show comes around ill have money saved!

I ran the inaugural Las Vegas RnR race in Dec 2009 and that race was probably the most fun I’ved had in races.

There were stops along the race where people could get married and plenty of people wearing Elvis costumes running the race. While running on the strip, you see people just getting out of the club looking really fabulous, lol!

It was so cold though that my toes were numbed the whole time. But this time it’s an evening race so that adds to the fun right? They also post your face on the big jumbo tron while running too.

For me, it depends on the “experience” of the race. If it’s a crazy insanely beautiful/exciting course, I’ll pay bigger bucks.. and for more swag and a good after party, I’ll pay up. 😉

If it’s basic and bare-bones, I won’t fork up nearly as much.
