Today’s workout targeted my whole body. After 20 minutes on the elliptical, I did the total body workout detailed in Tina’s Best Body Boot Camp plan.
I hope I’m not too sore from today’s workout on Saturday since competing in an indoor triathlon with sore hamstrings or shoulders does not sound like fun! Fortunately today’s workout wasn’t overly intense, so I think I’ll be okay for the race. Running or biking with lead legs sounds pretty miserable!
Breakfast
A perfectly ripe avocado chillin’ in our pantry was the inspiration behind today’s breakfast.
Today’s scrambled egg mixture included a sliced chicken sausage, cauliflower and avocado. A winning combination!
Race Shirt Preferences
This morning I received an email from ZOOMA that included a few questions about race t-shirts:
- What kinds of shirts do you prefer from races (short sleeve, tank, wicking, life style, etc.)?
- Have you ever purchased a shirt from a race (outside of the one that comes with registration)?
- What kind of shirt are you most likely to buy (long sleeve, hoodie ,burn out, tech, etc.)?
As I mentioned on Monday’s post about what to do with old race t-shirts, I rarely wear race t-shirts. Occasionally I’ll wear them to bed or to the gym, but I prefer to workout in tank tops since I sweat so much, and my race t-shirts often remain untouched.
The race t-shirt I wear the most isn’t a particularly attractive shirt, but it is long-sleeved, which I love for running outside in the winter in Florida.
I think I may be in the minority with loving long-sleeve race shirts, but I get really excited when a race shirt is something a little different from the standard or dri-fit t-shirt. I’ve never seen a race tank top, but I would be incredibly excited about that, as I’m sure it would get a lot of wear.
I also like it when shirts are not white. So many race shirts are white, so when a race shirt varies in color, they stand out to me a little bit more.
Aside from long-sleeved shirts, perhaps my favorite race shirts are those that don’t look like race shirts.
I got the above t-shirt at the Savannah Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon last September and love it because the trees on the shirt remind me of the trees along the race course, but the shirt itself doesn’t look like a typical athletic shirt.
Now I ask you…
Questions of the Morning
- What is your favorite kind of race shirt?
- What features would you like to see offered in a race shirt that would make you love it?
I would love to see a lightweight tank top race shirt that is extra long. That would be right up my alley!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
I actually love dri-fit shirts, but I agree with you that a tanktop option would be really cool! And I love when they’re not just white or gray…the 1/2 marathon I did in March gave out bright teal shirts! I love wearing that one. 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
oooh!!! that sounds like an awesome color!
Alex @ Brain, Body, Because says
I’d love a tank top, too! Gotta show off that hard work 🙂
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I have to agree with you on the tank top!! I always work out in tanks, short sleeves irritate the heck out of me. I also agree that the tanks MUST be long….anything that rides up is no bueno!!
peanutbutterfingers says
i know! i’ve received a few “women’s fit” shirts that fit everywhere else but are are WAY too short and look ridiculous.
Katie Heddleston says
I usually like a wicking technical tee as the race shirt, but honestly, like you, I tend to work out in tank tops. I think receiving a tank top (even if it’s a lifestyle tank and not one to workout in) would be a really nice option!
And, I have a couple long sleeved shirts (both technical and cotton) and I actually wear those more than all my short sleeved ones!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
I have to totally agree with you – I actually love long sleeve race shirts too! And like you said, anything that’s not white is a nice change up. White is my enemy… Somehow (I have no clue how or why 😉 ) stains always seem to show up! Haha.
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
I would love to see the same shirt! I only workout in tanks and I have such a long torso! I have so many race t-shirts that just sit in my drawer because there crew neck men’s type t-shirts.
I hate to get rid of them, but I don’t wear them!
Katie H. says
I second (or third or fourth) the tank top! I run in my race T-shirts, but they get pretty stank-y pretty quickly. I’d prefer a tank.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Anything but a plain t-shirt! I would love moisture wicking tanks and/or long sleeve fitted tops. Cool colors would be awesome too!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Great topic! I like coloured shirts more as well, and if they are dry fit as opposed to cotton (which doesn’t breathe very much!) then that’s even better. Also, I’ve got a super long torso, so I can’t stand when the shirts are too short!
Khushboo says
Eggs & avocado…best combo ever !
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I never thought to add avocado to scrambled eggs or chicken sausage for that matter. I definitely want to try it. It sounds like a great combination even for dinner too 🙂
Faith @ For the Health of It says
Somehow all of my race shirts (except for one) have been neon. They were a little eye-roll inducing at first, but I do like that they stand out. I’m hoping the one for Track Shack’s celebration of running is a pretty red since the theme seems to be red, white and blue!
Kaleigh says
I love long sleeve race shirts as well! They’re so comfy and it’s nice to wear a race shirt in the winter without freezing! I need to find a race with colored long sleeve shirts, now THAT would be awesome!
I kind of don’t like how some races have shirts in women’s cuts now, mainly because they run pretty small. I have a dri-fit women’s cut triathlon shirt I got a few months ago and it’s TINY, I have only worn it one time since I got it.
peanutbutterfingers says
and they’re SO short!
Jenica says
I would just love a non-crew necked shirt! A tank would be great, but I mostly like the idea of it because they tend not to have a crew neck. I hate working out in shirts that cling around my neck and it seems like ALL race shirts have crew necks.
peanutbutterfingers says
i know what you mean! i want a shirt, not a turtleneck! 🙂
Mary @ food and fun on the run says
I love long sleeve t’s. I’m not all too picky, but I really don’t like it when races only have unisex shirts. The men’s style fit so awkwardly, and I never end up wearing them again. I would much rather be given a gender specific shirt so that I can rep it later 🙂
Sarah says
I also love dri-fit. Most of my workout shirts are race shirts. It did take some trial and error to figure out my size tho. I really appreciate when races have a tshirt swap area.
Tara says
I love the long sleeve dry fit/ mesh like material shirts because they are perfect for fall spring and winter running in Indiana. However, I would live a tank as well!! The only tank I have gotten was literally a belly shirt….a long tank in a bright color is definitely requested!! 🙂
Annie says
yep, definitely tank tops. I never run or workout in tshirts, hate them! In the winter I usually wear a tight fitted tank under a long sleeved.
Sarah @ Blonde Bostonian says
I definitely will buy a shirt at a race if they have a tank top available. The race shirts are always t-shirts or long-sleeve, but never tanks (even in the summer). But I always love when a race shirt is dri-fit. Cotton sucks.
jennyv says
T-shirt or Tank + dryfit + color!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
first of all I have been loving the egg and avocado combination lately, I have been making egg and cheese with avocado and I want to eat one at every meal! I wouldn’t mind a race tank option, I do enjoy when I get a long sleeve shirt from a race because I like to wear them when I run outside in the fall/winter time. Most of my race shirts look like race shirts and I wouldn’t mind getting one that didn’t for once!
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
I def prefer tank tops to t-shirts. For whatever reason, I always get really over heated when working out in a t-shirt! I need the easy breezy open-air feel hahah. I would also like if race shirts FIT better. I’m a really petite person & usually don’t fit into the small. I’d also be cool if there was a choice of two-three looks/colours on the shirts that participants could select when they register!
Brandi Stagg says
I have that same Savannah shirt! lol I would love a tank top race shirt. I can not stand a crew neck while running. Why not a v neck is it that much more expensive?
Chelsea @ http://prettyrunnergirl.blogspot.com says
Now that you mention it (and I’m thinking about it) I would love it if they made a tank top version of their regular short sleeved, I would totally and completely love it, and in any bright color of course 🙂
Candice says
My favorite race shirt is from the red rock relay! They were made by bella and are light weight, cute design and fitted!! I wear it all the time! All their other race gear is cute too!! They had jackets, tees, tanks and sweaters by nordic track. The best part is everything wasn’t over priced and I found it quite affordable!! I hate when races overcharge for a race sweater for some ridiculous price.
Red Rock Relay is where its at!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
As long as my race shirt is made out of wicking material, I’m fine with it. I’ve become a snob in the past year and don’t like working out in anything cotton anymore, so wicking race shirts are my favorite. I don’t have any long sleeve race shirts yet (I’ll have one in five weeks, though!), but I imagine I’ll really like having one come winter. It’ll get a lot of use I’m sure! I also prefer my race shirts to be light colored to reflect the sun, but not white. I’m so picky! Haha.
Kristin says
I have tons of dri fit shirts – about half long sleeve and half short sleeve. I also have a lot of cotton race t-shirts. I have a bunch of tank tops too – even some $65 Lulu tops.
My favorite? The cotton t-shirts! I don’t know why, but I just like wearing t-shirts, especially when I lift weights because I don’t like any part of my skin to touch equipment or floors (germ freak over here). I also prefer them over the dri fits because they are longer – hate those short torso women’s shirts. I actually started requesting Men’s small or x-small dri fit tops because of that problem.
Kelly says
I like long-sleeve, gender-specific race shirts because they’re nice for layering during the winter. I was just having this conversation with a running friend and we concluded it would be great to get something other than a shirt. How about arm warmers or compression socks? For a ladies-only race, running skirts or cute running shorts would be great!
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
My preference for a race t-shirt is cotton (the technical ones never seem that great of quality), and–this is key–women’s cut! 🙂
Lindsey says
Not unisex! haha. I like tech material tops that are semi fitted the best.
Katie @ Katie Moves says
either a nice long sleeve wicking one to wear in the winter or tank wicking material because i sweat so much! and i don’t LOVE tee shirts…too hot! also i agree about the women’s sizing sometimes..i have a long torso and end up with a belly baring shirt. no bueno!
Danica @ It's Progression says
I agree about the tank top, as long as it’s long! I’ve never gotten a tank from a race before, only t-shirts. I can’t stand running in cotton t’s either!
Jess says
I agree with you, tank top or a wife beater type of race shirt would be awesome, I’d definitely buy that!
Abby @ Change of Pace says
A tank would be pretty great! But, they would have to have gender specific.
I rarely purchase a top outside of the one I get. If I do, it has to be special. I love burned out if it’s super soft, or a nice hoody. Another factor in buying something else is the event. If it’s an awesome event with great memories, I’m a lot more likely to buy something.
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
Long torso ladies unite 🙂
Linda says
A tank would be awesome! Living in Florida it would get tons of use. Would prefer it specifically for women and a longer length would be a bonus.
Rachel says
I like long sleeved ones myself… I always find myself running in the fall here with those 🙂
Kimberly says
I love long sleeve race shirts! I did a Jingle Bell 5k a few years ago and the shirt had a cute Santa on it. I don’t usually wear T-shirts outside of the house so most of my race shirts end up unused.I would LOVE a long tank top (and I’m short, I just like having the extra coverage). I don’t like white shirts either because then I don’t want to wear them often due to sweating and staining the shirt.
I also love that races have come a long way in regards to making shirts that fit women. I have too many XS men’s shirts that are enormous.
Lauren @ Fun, Fit and Fabulous! says
I love long sleeved race shirts! I feel like I end up wearing them the most!
Mary says
Julie, you should come to Banff, Alberta and do the marathon called “Melissa’s Road Race. Every year the t-shirts are designed by an artist depicting the mountains and culture of Banff. Go on the website and see this year’s t-shirt. Maybe something to put on your bucket list. It is in Sept . Every year.
Courtney says
I dont know if you have seen this idea before but I tried it with some old race shirts and it turned out pretty cute! I actually got some compliments at the gym!

Linz @ Itz Linz says
A race tank would be AMAZING and would definitely be the most warn race shirt ever!
Anne says
I love getting technical shirts but they’re too hot to run in. I’d love to get a singlet!
Margaret says
I also love the long-sleeve ones, and ones that don’t look like race shirts. I would LOVE it if they had dri-fit tanks offered, that would be awesome!
Kristen says
I prefer technical shirts so that they actually get worn since my “normal” every day attire is usually not t-shirt based. And I’ve never gotten a tank/singlet, and I think that would be AWESOME!! I do have one long sleeve race shirt that I use in the winter (I actually have two, but I don’t know what happened on the sizing of the second one because it’s super short…not cool at all).
I have purchased a race t-shirt ONE time at the Tinkerbell half marathon because I couldn’t resist the fact that it was Tink saying “Eat my pixie dust”. 🙂
Christina says
i love dri fit shirts
Katherine @ The Fit Lady Sings says
I’m with you on the long-sleeved shirts! I like to wear them to bed and around the house when it’s cold outside. Whenever I get the tech shirts, they always fit a little funny and I never end up wearing them.
Chelsea says
I would love to see more technical shirts offered as race shirts! It would also be nice to see more women’s fit available. For most of the races I’ve done, they give out the standard unisex cotton shirts. I almost never wear these again.
I also love your idea of having a race tank top! I sweat a lot too, and would love to have something like that. I like wearing my race shirts as a badge of honor, and it would be awesome if some of them were more practical for working out in.
It would also be great PR for the race– how many times have you been on a machine, staring at the backside of someone in front of you and reading their shirt?
Lauren says
My pet peeve with race t shirts is when they are unisex – I can’t wear a men’s small to run in! Too-big cotton Ts aren’t horrible, because they can be cut, but I’m too scared to try to alter any sort of tech fabric.
The #1 thing that makes me absolutely LOVE a race shirt is if I worked hard for it. The shirt I got for my first marathon – a long-sleeved wicking deal – is one of my all-time favorites and always will be. Every time I put it on, I remember the sense of pride I had crossing that finish line, and more importantly all the hours I put in to get there. I feel pretty badass running around in that shirt, like “yeah, I ran this race, nbd.” even though obviously nobody really knows what it is.
Laura says
I love long sleeves too. I am a cold weather runner so I love throwing on a long sleeve and run in late fall.
Along with that, I would give anything for a running tank too
