At the grocery store on Sunday, Ryan wanted to buy tuna steaks for us to eat this week. We actually had the guy behind the seafood counter package them up before realizing that the tuna steaks were $9.99 each, not $9.99 a pound.
Um, no thanks. We politely explained to him our misunderstanding (he smiled and thankfully didn’t seem annoyed), and didn’t buy the tuna steaks.
If I’m paying $10 for a tuna steak, I want it cooked for me.
And tonight, that’s exactly what I had.
Seared tuna salad!
This evening Ryan and I decided to go on a mid-week date for some seafood. Since I made a commitment to enjoy one full week of healthy foods, I tried my best to make smart, healthy decisions at dinner… like limiting myself to two slices of bread with butter instead of filling up on half of the loaf of warm bread before my entrée was even delivered.
Whenever I go out to eat, I often go into dinner with an “all bets are off” attitude and typically leave a restaurant feeling overly stuffed. Tonight I was determined to leave feeling simply satisfied.
I savored the doughy bread and the whipped butter (which I think had garlic and chives in it – so good!) and still had plenty of room in my stomach when my seared tuna salad came out.
My salad was really good! I think Ryan was a little jealous, though his scallops, shrimp and grits dish was good as well. (Of course it didn’t hold a candle to the shrimp and grits he ordered on Jekyll Island two weeks ago.)
Our mid week date was such a special treat! We had a great time talking about a lot of random things going on in our lives right now and it felt good to enjoy a special date on a Tuesday night.
Hoping to get to sleep a little early this evening!

I don’t like leaving restaurants overly stuffed – so I usually keep it in check when I go out to eat!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
Mid-week date nights are the best! They break up the monotony of the work week – add just a little pizzazz. 🙂

That tuna does look amazing mm mm rare just the way I like it! 🙂
Katie @ Faith & Funfetti says
Love mid-week date nights! Today is our 1 month wedding anniversary and my sweet hubby surprised me with flowers, cookies and a cute “wife” card (my first!). Although I had planned on a “no desserts week” (feeling like I had indulged too much this weekend), his gesture was too sweet not to eat one…or 4. 😉
Juju says
I love date nights with hubby! The best are always in the midweek, since you don’t have to wait an hour or more for a good table! Looks like your healthy eating is going as planned! You got this girl!! =]
Lindsay@InSweetnessandInHealth says
Aw mid-week dates are so much fun! I can’t wait to see my boyfriend and spend the rest of the summer with him 🙂 Long-distance can kinda suck sometimes. You’re pictures always look so pretty!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
9.99/lb is a bit on the pricey side… i would have done the same thing! Looks like y’all had such an enjoyable meal. I tend to always fill up on the bread, too, whenever they bring it out. Ohhhh well!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Fish can get expensive eh?? But nothing like getting someone else to make it fo ya 🙂
Alaina says
Only a handful of times have I left a restaurant NOT feeling overly stuffed. It’s definitely a tough thing to do. Although, I think it’s usually all of the wine I drink that causes it. 😉
Gloria says
First off, love all the peanut butter recipes you posted earlier and can’t wait to try them! Second, that tuna looks delicious! Mid-week dates are the best. Glad you and Ryan had fun 🙂

That looks delicious!! What restaurant is it from?? And, do you have any Orlando area restaurant recommendations? My boyfriend and I are looking to try somewhere new this weekend. 🙂

Yay for mid week dates! I don’t like fish so I know zero about cooking/buying/ordering seafood.. I’m with you on a treat being necessary for Tuesday though. This day always deserves a pick-me-up!

It can be so hard to pass up warm bread! That tuna salad looks delish. I hate when places overcook tuna. I like it rare!

You go girl! Hehe, corny…Mid-week dates sound extra special…even more special because you are married and busy and have lots going on 🙂 I went on a “mid-week” date/non-date…I’m not sure what to classify it as, it was SUCH a nice way to break up the week, have a ton of laughs and just talk about what’s going on! Feeling the relaxation from a fun night…and hope you are too! Now off to bed early for me as well!
Shari @ Chicago Cuisine Critique says
Sounds like a fun date night. I’m exactly the same with restaurant eating. All bets are off..but on a rare occasion I do try and pay attention to how much I consume.
Jordan P @ food, sweat, and beers says
Ah, jewlie, my beau and I are taking are own little mid-week date tomorrow!! Though I can’t promise how healthy it will be. I must say though, it’s great to take a little date in the middle of the week, especially when you live with your significant other! Keeps things from being too much like roomies and more like lovebugs!
Meg says
Love the random Tuesday dinner outing 🙂 So refreshing…and tuna is my go-to dish when it’s on the menu 😀
Enjoy your evening, JEWLIE 😉

I love random mid-week dates! That tuna salad looks fantastic!

I’ve never had seared tuna before. It kinda looks like a sort of sushi that I would like to try one day. Shrimp and grits sound yum! I just loooovve shrimps. Good job on the ‘healthy eating’ week. I myself am on a cleansing week by eating vegetarian meals and up till now it’s been challenging yet satisfying
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says

Spontaneous mid-week dinners are the best! That meal sounds delicious- i feel like a parrot with my comments lately but seriously, you’ve been getting in some good eats!
Alisa @ Running with Knives says
I’ve been doing much better with restaurants ever since I became lactose intolerant. Anything listed as creamy (my favorite food description…) is out of the question, and same thing with anything with the word butter. Also, in the efforts of trying to eat more veggies at every meal, I’m forced to make a healthier choice. Even though Saturday, I splurged and still ordered the giant bowl of pasta, I ordered a side salad and a side of asparagus I mixed into the pasta.
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
Mmm that seared tuna looks amazing! I think that tuna is the only thing I can stand to be a little raw on the inside. Steaks and other fish are GROSS when they’re less that fully cooked.
Sarah says
I love eating out!! Living in NYC, I eat out all the time. I really think I need to rethink my eat-out strategy and turn it into a more special occasion
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
I can’t even explain how DELICIOUS that tuna looks. Seared tuna is one of my favorite foods, paired with bread and whipped butter I’m ready to die & go to heaven. so so yummy!

Is this at Harrys Seafood Bar & Grille? I work there and this is one of my favorite salads and order it all the time & the bread and butter is hard to resist! This is my first post and I love reading your blog!

I made your Peanut Butter Energy Bites today! I’m not sure if I like the taste of Wheat Germ but am still glad I tried a new recipe! I put some chocolate chips in half the batter. I want to try those peanut butter oatmeal cookies next 🙂

I’m super jealous of your dinner, Julie! Whenever seared tuna is on a menu, I order it. I love tuna raw as well, but that quick flash on the grill imparts so much extra flavor!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
That tune looks delicious, exactly what I woulkd have ordered 🙂 I always choose seafood/fish at restaurants because they never fail to prepare it better that I could ever do it myself, lol! 😉 xyx
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
oops…tunA! 🙂 xyx
Hayley @ Hayley Daily says
I’m not a seafood eater, but I imagine that tuna steaks would be something I’d rather just have a restaurant prepare for me! I think you made the right decision. The colorful salad looks super delish though. 🙂
Niki (Life's a Payne) says
I love random date nights!
And I think there is just something about whipped butter at a restaurant. I don’t think I have ever though “you know what this butter is only so-so”. I love it!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
Julie I just looked at your Shape slideshow, and I loved how accessible and healthy all your recipes were; they are “every day” ones which are absolutely perfect when you want to make something simple, but also are in need of ideas and inspiration! Thought is was also great how you made them mostly for 1-2 people. I’m going to try the PBB chia seed toastie, the smoothie and the oatmeal – and that’s just for starters! 🙂 xyx

Yum! Your dinner looks great! 🙂

i love mid-week dates! hope you had fun!

I LOVE mid week date nights! Such a great way to reconnect and break up the monotony of the work week.
Beth (Well I'll Be) says
I’m really trying to work on the “all bets are off” attitude while eating out also. I think we eat out so rarely I just feel like it’s a treat, but a healthy entree can still be a treat, no need to eat a whole plate of fries by myself. Like you said it just makes you feel too full!
