Good morning to you! I am going to need all the energy I can get today because I have two indoor cycling classes on my agenda before 10 a.m.
Luckily Iām done teaching my first class for the day (I am seriously in love with my 6 a.m. crew — they are so much fun!), so I only have one remaining. Iām subbing for a Sculpt ānā Spin class at 9 a.m and the class format should be a neat one to teach because half of the workout is dedicated to cycling and the remaining 30 minutes will be spent off the bike, focusing on strength training. Iām just filling in for the regular instructor for today, but Iām looking forward to teaching something new!
Breakfast
During my morning class today, I joked with our group about how I always find myself brainstorming breakfast ideas during the last 15 to 20 minutes of any morning workout. (When Iām teaching, however, my mind doesnāt wander too much!) The class then started shouting out their own breakfast ideas and Iām pretty sure we all drooled through the climb during that little game.
One woman said she had protein pancakes on her mind this morning and that inspired me to revisit an old favoriteā¦
My super simple egg white and oatmeal protein pancake! Gosh, I love this recipe so darn much.
I added a big scoop of Teddie peanut butter to the egg white and oatmeal mixture today to give the pancake a little more staying power and stirred everything around before cooking it up in a skillet. The peanut butter was a great addition and definitely kicked the flavor up a notch. I topped the pancake with maple syrup and enjoyed it with a side of hot tea.
Now itās time to get rolling and head back out to the gym. My gym work day is going to be cut a little short today and I have plans to bring Caitlin dinner and meet her sweet baby Claire for the first time later this afternoon. Canāt wait!
Question of the Morning
- What are some of the most random things you think about during your workouts?
I do a lot of random meal planning during my workoutsā¦ Working out and dreaming about foodā¦ Sounds about right! Haha! During morning workouts, I also find myself thinking about the dayās to-do lists but I really try to keep myself in the zone (especially during Pure Barre because Iāll get lost if I donāt!).
fitgirlprettyworld says
I’m usually thinking about food …..especially when I’m doing longer runs I think about what I’m going to eat immediately afterwards. Ha! Or sometimes I see someone in class with a cute workout wardrobe and I daydream about clothes! Very profound thinking over here! š
Julie says
haha yes, always very deep stuff š
Kim says
Ah, the joys of early morning workouts… I workout at 6AM and I am ALWAYS daydreaming of breakfast. When I’m doing a particularly grueling WOD, I get out of my head by thinking about what I’m going to chow down on when it’s over. š
Tom @ Raise Your Garden says
I think about food, but I do that even when I’m not working out. I was actually thinking about putting up new shades in our house and washing the windows in the house because they are dirty and need it.
Hollie says
When I am teaching a class I tend to focus on the class itself, but if I am working out alone I focus on ideas and brainstorming- same when I am running. I try and let my mind just wander, but that is usually where it goes.
Julie says
same here! teaching doesn’t really let my mind wander!
Chrissy @ Pink Polish and Running Shoes says
I work out in the morning so I always find myself trying to decide what I want to wear to work while I’m finishing up on the treadmill.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
What’s nice is that since starting CrossFit, my mind doesn’t wander as much during my workout. i’m more focused on that moment and getting through the intense workout. When I run though my mind definitely wanders to what I may eat later, what I need to do with the rest of my day, how my body is feeling, what’s been happening in my life recently, what I want to do with the rest of it…all sorts of things!
Heather @Fit n Cookies says
I typically think of dinner when I teach Monday night because it’s at dinner time, or if I’m running, I typically think of breakfast after haha! Sometimes I think of to-dos too.
Lauren @ The Bikini Experiment says
I will think about what I am eating next, but mostly, I just think about my to-do list. I do try to push those extra thoughts away and focus though. Some days are easier than others!
Alison Z says
Ice cream is my all-time favorite treat! I’ve also made Katie’s tofu chocolate pie, which is delicious!
Leah @ goodnight, cheese says
I think about being at my goal weight in a year – though I guess that’s not too random since it’s while exercising.
I often think about chores or other things I need to do when I get home after work, and end up planning it all out in intense detail. First I’m going to take off my shoes, then put a pot on to boil, then have something to drink…..
Run Eat Play says
I’m usually thinking about my day’s to-do list also! And coffee. Lol! Sometimes I think about drinking coffee post workout!
skigirl0891 says
There is probably nothing off limits that I don’t think about while working out!! To do lists, eating for the week, what I need shopping, what I need to return… I actually wish I could totally tune out/zone out, haha!
Clare @ Happy Eater says
Breakfast is absolutely on my mind during early morning workouts. I eat a lot of eggs, so I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how I can make something new out of eggs each morning š
Darrecia says
Food. I usually workout after work so I’m mentally planning dinner while doing Tabatas on a bike. Sometimes I even think about my pitiful love life, especially when I’m cooling off on my gym’s indoor track haha
Brynn says
I think about the day before, the ups and downs, and then plan for the day to come. Everything from blog to food to to-dos! But other days I zone out and wonder where the time went at the end, ha!
Kim says
I Would be exhausted after two cycle classes – go, you! That sounds so interesting with strength training and cycle in a class!

I think about food and to-do lists a lot when working out. When I’m running long without music, I get random songs stuck in my head on a loop – super random, like Christmas songs and children’s songs I haven’t thought about in years.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
When I’m working out on my own, I am typically thinking of similar things you said…food, food, food, and life to-do’s. š But when I’m teaching, I naturally just zone into my class and the workout, and I absolutely love it. It’s like I can just forget about all the worries of the world for that one hour. I’ve come into class to teach a few times worried that I wouldn’t be able to focus because various things were on my mind, but as soon as that music starts, it’s like I just forget about it.
That pancake sounds delicious! I’ll need to try that one! Mixing in peanut butter is aaaalways a good idea. š
Laura says
I think about so many random things! I often think about triathlon training and about the next 70.3 I plan to complete. I run with my dog and am obsessed with her so I think about her a lot. And I like to think about my dream house and I come up with inventions I’d like to produce and sell one day. I think I have some killer ideas and just need the time and cash flow to make them come to life!
Jill @ Champange for Everyday says
I love this post!! How much fun is it to have the class shouting out food ideas. Nothing like something to power you through the last few mins of a workout! Protein pancakes are the best, I like to stack’em with greek yogurt and fruit in between š

I haven’t made protein pancakes in a while either! Definitely going to whip up some this weekend.
Bethany Imondi says
Morning workouts typically involve me thinking of all I need to do in the day ahead. Post-office workouts have me thinking about what I will be making for dinner when I finally get home.
Christine says
Hahaha breakfast is always on my mind as well! It helps motivate me to push hard those last few minutes of my workout š
Natalie @ Never Serious Blog says
Oh man, every time I go for a run I’m creating a to-do list in my head! It’s one of the pros to being a runner, extra time to plan, undistracted!

WOO, I have not embraced the bike yet in 2015. However, I am taking my first Pure Barre class tonight and I can NOT wait!

hope you love it!!

My #1 topic is food, and my #2 topic is kind of food: my dream dinner party guests. I think yesterday I settled on my best friend Mary, Emma Stone, my grandmother, Amal Alamuddin, and Jennifer Aniston. Ladies night!
Lake Shore Runner says
I do meal planning too!! I also like to schedule out my week and pick what outfits I will wear š So I guess I do a lot of planning! Especially in spin classes.

lol don’t we all think about what we are going to eat after?! I thought that was a given (:
Angela @ HonestlyAngela says
I tend to think a lot about my blog and my next post while working out. Lately i have also been thinking about some future plans and goals that i have. I actually don’t think that food really crosses my mind.
Annette Perkins (@FitnessPerks) says
I don’t usually think about breakfast until I’m home actually. I’m a person that all of a sudden something sounds good, so I can’t plan ahead too much. Weird, huh?! I do love eggs, granola/yogurt, and fruit, so I usually have some combo of that. i do always drink my recovery protein/milk drink on the way home, so I’m never starving when I choose š
Yay for teaching group fitness! It’s one of the best jobs ever. And I’m sure you rock at it! Today I taught an early morning BODYATTACK and the room was on fire
Bethany says
I seem to always think about food, or clothes lol
Christie @ The Weekday Table says
I do blog planning… meal planning… and spend time reflecting on something that’s bothering me (if something is!)

My mind always wanders when I am on the treadmill or lifting weights. Food, to do lists, negotiating (if I do one more set or run 1 more mile then I can have a reward of some kind)…anything really!
Katie says
Agreed, I am always meal planning during my workout! Haha … That, or trying my hardest to visualize kicking butt in my workout – usually during a really tough one!
Kelly Runs for Food says
My mind goes all over the place when I work out. If it’s a 5 AM-er, I’m usually watching the early news and thinking about work and breakfast. I also like to scope out people’s cute workout gear!
Chelsea @ Raw N' Toned says
I’m almost always thinking about food when I workout hahaha but I also think about food when I’m not working out as well. Love me some protein pancakes!!! But I will also plan things while I’m working out, it’s really bad actually hahaha. I come up with some crazy ideas.
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
There’s rarely a time when I’m not thinking about food heheheh! š I haven’t had protein pancakes in a while, maybe I need that on the agenda for the weekend. Happy Tuesday!
Vicky says
In most cases, I am thinking about whatever it is I am watching on the TV while I do my cardio. Last night it was a recap of Golden Globes fashion! I may have been swooning over how GORGEOUS Amal Alamuddin looked in her black dress š
Lauren @ ihadabiglunch says
Haha my mind always wanders towards the end of my workout too! I think that’s hilarious that your group shouts out their breakfast ideas. Morning group fitness classes are the best! Sculpt and spin — two of the most fun ways to work out!
Ashleigh says
My mind wanders so much when I’m teaching – thanks to all the mirrors! I notice what so many people are doing in the other areas of the gym and who walks by the studio. I also think of food a lot, looking forward to my next meal. Also general things like what’s going on throughout the week, how sweaty / tired I am, etc. When I’m training, I usually let myself think of things that get me fired up to work harder – if it’s stress I’m dealing with, or situations which frustrate me. LOL.
I’m now definitely going to have a protein pancake for dinner tonight – thanks!!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse says
It generally depends on my workout and how intense it is/mental thought it takes. If I am running in the mornings I am almost always thinking about the things I need to do that day while simultaneously watching one of my favorite shows on my iPad. However with other workouts, it takes all my effort to simply get the workout done haha!
amysarahjo says
I just made my return to high intensity classes last night (rehabbing my knee with lots of Pure Barre), and it’s the same format as your 9am class! We call it Bike Boot Camp, and it’s 30 miserable minutes of spin (obviously cardio is what I NEED because I hate it) followed by 25 minutes of strength training and then a good stretch. We did a Seahawks/Kam Chancellor inspired workout, doing 31 reps of every exercise to honor the #31 player as well as the 31 points scored against the Panthers. We used only body weight, but it seriously hurts to walk today.
During the workout I was wishing we were honoring our QB Russell Wilson instead by doing 3 reps of everything instead of 31!
I also ‘window shop’ while working out. I see so many great workout pieces and ask where they’re from if there isn’t an obvious brand label visible. Then if I hit a milestone (like 13 PB classes in a row), I buy myself something special. My new fave are the Splits59 Kym tights in red. LOVE!!

I used to be absolutely obsessed with protein pancakes with fresh blueberries mixed in but I haven’t made them in a while. I think I’m going to give your version a shot!
Mattie @ Comfy & Confident says
I want to take your class! I bet it is so much fun and such a great workout!
stacy says
SOOOOOOOOOO happy no weights during cycling. YES!
please do a re cap of that.
When I work out after work, I usually think about shower, food, relaxing and what I will be watching on TV !
Michelle Hunt (@PeachyPalate) says
Usually food š
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
Today was my second day shadowing as a coach at a local gym and since it is Tabata Tuesday, I was in charge of all the cues to call out. When I just went with it it was fine, but when I started concentrating too hard and wondering if I would mess up, I felt panicked. It’s always more nerve wracking when it’s not your own class and on some level you are being judged by the main coach. I definitely think I did a good job though and am looking forward to teaching my own classes in the coming weeks!
Beks says
I’m usually thinking about how busy, or not busy the gym is. Honestly, I prefer the not busy, so I’m not having to stay seated on a bench to save it for myself.
