Plus, when I workout with someone else, I’m usually concerned about how they’re feeling… are we running too slow, doing too much, etc. I forget to actually focus on my own workout.
I do have exceptions to this rule:
- Group exercise classes (So much fun with a friend)
- Steady-state cardio (Elliptical, long runs, etc.)
- Long walks and hiking (I get bored without a buddy)
So, I guess I like a workout buddy when I’m not in the mood to kick my butt in the gym. 🙂
Fortunately I had the lovely company of my friend Merri on my morning walk with Sadie! After the gym (BodyPump + 20 minutes on the elliptical), we headed to my apartment to pick up the pup before taking her on a nice long walk around Lake Eola.
Merri made the time fly by. If I didn’t have that silly office job to get to this morning, I gladly would’ve kept walking for another hour or so.
Breakfast
After our walk, I came home ready for breakfast.
I first toasted a cinnamon spice Alternative Bagel before topping it with peanut butter, nectarine slices, nutmeg and chia seeds.
With the way that that nectarines were layered, it reminded me of a double cheeseburger… only not quite so greasy and a lot more colorful.
G-o-o-d!
Time to get to work! 😀
Question of the Morning
- Do you prefer working out alone or with a buddy?
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
buddy workouts are AWESOME.. but I also push myself much harder when I’m solo.
p.s. my mom’s in florida this week, and I totally asked her to hit a Publix to grab some alternative bagels. cha-ching!
Brooke says
I prefer working out with a buddy! I’m so busy all other times during the week that sometimes that is our only time to catch up with each other!
Meg says
I always get a better workout when I’m by myself or with my Dad – sounds funny but it’s true! He’s really into lifting and helped me get into it to 🙂
Jess (Daly Authenticity) says
Not gonna lie…I do like working out alone, although I like knowing that my husband is there at the gym working out too. It’s kinda weird.
kimmah says
Totally agree with your stance on working out! I like company for stationary indoor stuff or if a friend is in a class with me. BUT if I’m doing an outdoor run, alone is the way to go. I’ve found one person always suffers by not getting a great workout or by having to push too hard and that’s not fun for anybody!
Geraldine says
Alone! I hate when I feel like someone is waiting for me to finish my workout – it makes me feel under pressure to rush! Also when I’m walking or running it’s hard to tell a friend to hurry up if they’re slowing you down. I guess I’m set in my ways 😉
Danielle says
I 100% would rather work out alone. I am generally a talker, but when I am at the gym I just want to get in my workout and be done with it. I also HATE when I run into ppl I haven’t seen in a while, they tend to talk your ear off and by the time they are done you are so exhausted and don’t even feel like working out. Once in a while going for a run with a friend is fun though. 🙂
Maryann (The Balanced Bean) says
I am the same as you! Alone usually, but with a buddy if its something thats a little less intense.
Danica says
I typically like to work out by myself because I also think I push myself harder then. This probably sounds weird, but I also don’t like the feeling of people “watching” me work out, so it’s nice to get to the gym when it’s not too overly busy…Fitness Classes I love though because I have to keep up and there’s no room for stopping for a break if I just feel like it
kristy @ kristyruns says
I joined a group to run 13 miles a week ago and it was awesome! Although I really enjoy my me time runs too. 🙂
Kathie (Frugal Fit and Fabulous) says
i much prefer to workout alone
Erin says
I prefer to work out with other people! My boyfriend and I challenge one another a lot, it is a lot of fun, plus it helps us both improve and stay out of “workout ruts”!
Candice says
it depends, Im a total group fitness girl but to go to the gym with a friend one- on-one. no offense to them. but I actually prefer to be by myself. I often push my self harder and Im really not to great at talking and running and or lifting it slows me down.. But it is nice every now and then to catch up.. although my friend that I saw last night came up to me while I was finishing up with some quick abs and she said “your all sweaty”!! uhhh…. yep, im at the gym…;)
Ashley P. @ The Vegetable Life says
it depends for me too, I love group fitness classes but I typically like to work out alone, I am more hard core that way 🙂
… but I am starting to train for a half-marathon soon with my sister (this is her first race ever!) so we are going to train together…. I hope it goes well!
Clarissa @ soberandthecity says
A buddy! That way I have to work out, because I’ve made a commitment to someone. If I don’t…most likely I won’t show up at the gym!
Is there a health benefit to Chia seeds or are they just tasty? I’ve seen them a lot in food pictures lately but have never tried them!
skinnyrunner says
when i run with people, i feel the same way! the whole time im thinking, “are we going too fast for them, too slow, is this too hard, are they dying, do they hate me?”
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
I have the exact same rules as you. ALONE! Except for group fitness and I imagine I would lika a partner on some longer runs too.
Laura@ Backstage Pass says
I prefer working out solo for running, and don’t mind the company for group fitness classes, hiking or biking.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Breakfast looks lovely!I I almost always work out by myself (except when I’m teaching classes obviously!) for the same reasons as you. However, once in a while if I do work out with a buddy, I’m pleasantly surprised! I guess it just makes a nice change. Having said that, I do like my alone workout time to think through my day. 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
That breakfast looks AWEsome.
I’m with you. I like working out on my own unless it’s a steady type workout like a long run or a group class. When I do work out with other people, I usually end up wanting to stay way longer than them too. So it works out if I’m not annoying anyone by making them wait for me. 🙂
Carrie says
i def prefer working out alone! but like you said.. hiking and long walks i NEED a buddy! i love the nectarine pb combo!- very unique!
Parita @ myinnershakti says
I prefer working out alone. If someone else is even at the gym with me and not necessarily “with” me, I always tend to think of how the other person is feeling/what they are doing/when they’ll want to leave. These thoughts make for an unproductive workout for me. I do like to have company on walks though…really does make time fly!
Mellissa says
I prefer to workout alone, I like the me time!
Gen says
I usually prefer working out alone…..I always feel like I get better workouts alone for some reason! =D
Amanda says
100% I would rather workout alone. It’s MY time where I think about anything and everything.
Carpensm @ A Life Without Ice Cream says
Hands down I’d rather work out alone! Every once in a while its nice to have a workout buddy but I’m always thinking about the other person… are they having fun? do they want to go soon? do they want to work out longer?
My workout is one of the few things I do for me and where I have time to focus on me. I love my solo zone out time!
Kristen @ That Hoosier Girl says
Alone for cardio, but I love having a buddy for strength training!
Jason @ Shutter&Saute says
Nectrines and peanut butter, sounds like a great combo.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Cardio and weights I always prefer to be alone, but I’ve actually found that group classes are the best way to keep my motivated for strength training. I love bootcamp-style stuff and BodyPump!
Lee @ Fit Foodie Finds says
I have mixed feelings just like you! I think it depends on the type of workout. When I am doing indoor cardio, I like to be by myself but when I’m doing strength or running/hiking outside, I like a buddy! With the exception of yoga, I can’t seem to get into the whole group exercise class thing.
Katie @ running4cupcakes says
I always get a better run in when I am with someone else. The conversation always makes the time go by faster and I find I run farther than if I am alone.
Allison says
I always prefer to workout on my own. I will make sme exceptions for classes because i am still focusing on my own workout and at times being pushed harder than id push myself!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says
I like to run by myself – but I really enjoy group exercise classes! My husband and I do a lot of hiking, and he’s a great partner for that! 🙂
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
I definitely like exercising by myself. It allows me to be alone with my thoughts and decompress. I’m around people most of the day and I like my “me” time! 🙂
Jeni @ stepping out says
I am definitely a working out alone person. I’m a loner by nature.
I have found though that I work harder if someone is around, like in a group class, so I’m trying to do more classes, push myself out of my comfort zone and really get a good workout.
Stephanie @ The Cookie Battle says
I prefer to run alone (because I’m a tortoise), but everything else, I like with a buddy. It just keeps it interesting.
Allison@ Happy Tales says
I’m a runner, and I find that working out alone is the best way to go for me. I am SUPER super slow (read: 11minute miles slow!!) and like you, I am always wondering if I’m slowing down the person I’m running with… so I find it much more enjoyable to just be out there by myself and nature (or my ipod!) Also, I find that am a very intrinsicly motivated person… group ex classes like body pump are great, but they don’t movtivate me any more or push me any harder. It’s just the way I’m wired I guess! Perhaps that’s a good thing, though? My thinking is that I’ll always find the drive to workout, even as I grow older and age. Just my two cents!
Jenny @ loveeatrun says
I like working out a lone for the same reasons as you..1. I like to kick my own butt and 2. I get worried I’m running too fast or too slow for my workout buddy. I guess that pretty much only goes for my runs though. Otherwise, I like having someone there to chat with if I feel like it (and can pending how hard I’m working out). Give me a treadmill next to someone where I can do my own workout and they can do theirs…and I’m happy!
Jenny @ loveeatrun says
*alone
Heather (Heather's dish) says
You seriously have the best breakfasts. Can I come eat with you in Florida? 🙂
Susan says
For the most part I like working out on my own. I make exceptions for group classes of course! That’s when I like having someone there 🙂
Colleen @ The Lunchbox Diaries says
I prefer to workout alone. If I workout with someone else, I’m more likely to slack? Or I get performance anxiety haha! I’m so weird 🙂
Linda says
I prefer group exercise and have a hard time exercising without a class 🙁
Cynthia says
I usually like working out alone better. The only exception is when I go running. I prefer running with someone (mainly my husband and my dog). It makes time go by so much faster.
Sable says
Mmmm nectarine sandwich! Great idea!
When I strength train I do it alone because my focus is on building muscle and to lift heavy and with good form, I have to focus. BUT I like doing cardio with a buddy because I get SO bored!
Marlo says
I like both.. I do like group classes at my gym.. everyone is giving instructions and then we all start at the same time.. its motivating to have everyone going as fast and hard as they can all at once..
But if im running or just in a funk i wanna be alone..
Amber K says
I very much prefer solo workouts. It’s my “me” time and I wouldn’t get anything accomplished if I was with someone else. I tend to concentrate more on my friend than on my workout if we are working out together.
Natalia - a side of simple says
I really prefer working out solo, unless it’s with my mom. She’s the only person that I can get my exercise on with because we’re so alike and on the same page with our mentality. Plus, we always manage to make each other laugh!
RoseRunner says
I never work out with anyone else. Except my boyfriend, but his limit is 4 miles.
It makes me nervous if I know the other person is fast, and makes me bored or kind of upset if the other person is slowing me down (uh….my boyfriend). At the gym, I also get kind of annoyed when people want to chat me up.
The exception is definitely hiking. I’m sure hiking would be fun alone, but I’ve never done that. I love hiking with my boyfriend and/or friends.
Erin @ The Grass Skirt says
Definitely alone. Like you, I like working out with someone else when I am in a group class or taking a walk or a hike. It passes the time!
