After an incredible 4th of July and a whirlwind beach weekend, this morning it was back to reality!
Workout
Our alarm went off at 5 a.m. and Ryan and I quickly changed into our workout gear and drove to the gym. I started my workout with 20 minutes on the elliptical and used every single minute to wake myself up before it was time to kick my booty in the functional training area of our gym.
I really worked up a sweat this morning by completing the following workout:
Plus four rounds of the following:
- 20 sec. mountain climbers
- 10 sec. rest
- 20 sec. box jumps
- 10 sec. rest
- 20 sec. jumping jacks
- 10 sec. rest
- 20 sec. speed skaters
- 10 sec rest
Breakfast
By the time we arrived home, I was ready for breakfast.
Time for the old standby!
I made myself an egg sandwich on a toasted whole wheat English muffin with jelly, cheese and two fried eggs.
For some reason, my egg sandwich didn’t hold me over for nearly as long as it usually does and within 90 minutes, I was back in the kitchen, ready for more food.
I heated up some frozen blueberries in the microwave and topped them with about two tablespoons of crunchy almond butter – a snack I first saw on Tina’s blog.
Much better!
I also had two Tootsie Rolls and a small box of Red Hots not long after I was done with my blueberry snack. When candy is in the house, it calls to me!
I received my latest candy stash over the weekend from my friend Kristen who sent it to me in an adorable container that she used to ask me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding next year!
She sent the candy to me because it reminded her of the roller rink parties we used to go when we were younger. We’d hang out at the snack bar and eat candy when we wanted a break from skating! Does any one else remember couple’s skate? I’m pretty sure I only got asked to skate with a boy one time and all I thought about was how sweaty my hands were as we skated around the roller rink. Oh, memories!
Question of the Afternoon
- Did you ever go to the roller rink when you were younger?
Our elementary school would host roller rink parties that were a lot of fun. Then, when I was in middle school, people started going to Teen Night at Tunnels of Fun. I never went to Teen Night at Tunnels of Fun (or was it Discovery Zone?) and now that I’m older it sounds like a claustrophobic nightmare.
Oh my gosh. Thinking of Discovery Zone brings back some wonderful memories. I LOVED that place! It saddens me to think of how they’ve downgraded the playing space for kids at our mall…now it’s just a small area with miniature slides and such smack dab in the middle of the mall. Also, candy is definitely my weakness as well…I can’t stay away if it’s in the vicinity!
Also! Since you are experienced with half marathons and long distance running, I think you may appreciate my most recent post! “10 Questions to Never Ask a Marathon Runner” http://runningthebody.com/2013/07/08/10-questions-to-never-ask-a-marathon-runner/
Ha! That is too funny about rollerskating. It was the biggest thing in the 90s. I went to a place called Skater’s World with my friends and I’m pretty sure they had disco Fridays where they would turn the lights off and have colored lights shooting everywhere. Everyone thought it was so cool to have their birthday party there. There was definitely Couple’s Skate at my rink but I’m pretty sure that was everyone’s cue to say “wow I am SO tired!” and go sit down. 🙂
I used to love going to the roller rink in town when I was little! We’d have birthday parties and buy all those silly concession toys. We had a blast.
Yes, smells like feet.
I always said roller rinks smell like recess… Like sweaty kids that come in from outside and smell like cold sweat. Mmm.
Rollerskating is pretty fun and time flies by when you’re enjoying what you’re doing.
I love seeing the exercises that you do since it helps give me ideas to freshen up my workout routine.
The egg sandwich looks so good that I’ll have to make a variation of it to eat 🙂
That is so cute! Great idea 🙂
i used to go to roller rink parties all the time – loved them!! the elementary school teach where i teach still hosts parties there!!
I remember going to teen night at the roller rink when i was in middle school! Now, when I think about the rental skates, I get so skeeved!!!
Yes! Every Wednesday was teen night at CC’s skate rink. All the cool kids went. I remember the scramble to find a partner during couples’ skate and can proudly recall my one time skate date with Mike, the dreamboat of our grade. So awkward.
We had a rollar rink near us but it only lasted a few months before it disappeared! Loved my rollarskates though, way better then rollarblades/inline skates! Barney Butter….the best almond butter EVER!
Oh yeah, roller rinks! I was afraid to pick up my left foot, though, so i’d leave that on the floor and only “paddle” with my right foot. More like a scooter than skating! They were a blast at the time but if I think about them now I shudder. ugh.
Tina made me love that snack! OH my. So good!
I used to have all my “dates” when I was in 6/7th grade at the roller rink. haha. I used to love those “dots” that they used to have.
I had my 13th birthday party at a roller rink in the glow-in-the-dark room!! It was a blast! I still remember it to this day. It was such a fun time. I loved our roller rink near our house, it was called Skate-U, it’s ironically still there but now it’s Incredi-Roll. The crowd has changed for the worse.
I miss the roller rink days, listening to Paul Abdul and trying to skate backwards! I never picked up that particular skill.
I believe I had every single birthday party at the skating rink from the time I was in the 1st grade up until I was in the 6th. I LOVED skating!!
Hahaha–yessss the roller skating rink. Such memories. I always loved the ‘boys ask girls skate’ time b/c I was so excited to ‘go’ with a boy. I always had a crush on someone! hah
Oh, the memories!!! I loved roller skate limbo though I am pretty sure I wasn’t all that good at it!! And for couples skating, I never wanted to do it because I hated skating backwards, lol!!
That is such a sweet way to ask you to be a bridesmaid. She had know idea she would bring back memories for so many of us!!!
I loved roller rink parties!! When I was in Girl Scouts/Brownies we would have lock-ins there. Also girls used to have Bday parties at them too. I definitely liked rollerskating better than bowling or mini golf which were also popular party places for kids.
I loved the roller rink when I was younger! Pretty sure that’s where I first held hands with a boy. 🙂
Oh my goodness, the roller rink was always a hit for birthday parties when I was a kid.. too funny!
I went to roller rinks a few times… but I wasn’t old enough to ever “couple skate”! I was still at the age where boys were yucky, haha! 😉 It’s wedding season for you, holy cow!
I just nominated you for a Liebster Award! Check it out: http://wp.me/2EjWv
Might not be as prestigious as some awards, but I do love your blog and want to share it with the world! 🙂
xoxo -a
I always had my birthday parties at the skating rink – so fun!
Oh my gosh, I love the idea of eating frozen berries with nut butter! I will most definitely be trying this out soon. Love the simple meal ideas you share on your blog, they’re always winner and realistic for my life 🙂
I would always go to Discovery Zone for my birthday parties when I was younger. It definitely sounds like a claustrophobic nightmare and a stinky nightmare. I could just picture that place smelling like old socks, yuck.
I don’t want to toot my own horn but… beep beep. I was an amazing roller rink skater. I did the tootsy roll, got real low when turning corners and always won red light, green light!
Hi Julie!
Kind of a random question for you… when you and Ryan hit up the gym in the morning, do you guys take out Sadie first (to quickly go potty) or does she wait until you guys get back? Does she get antsy while you guys are away? I’m having trouble getting into an exercise groove in the morning and I think part of it is that I don’t know what to do with our (relatively new) pup… do we give him a quick potty break, go to the gym, and then give him more exercise when we get back/after breakfast, or do we give him a good run but then risk being too tired to head to the gym? Anyway, just wondering what your routine is with Sadie… it would be helpful to hear from an experienced dog owner on this topic! Thanks in advance 🙂
(Oh, and congrats again to your sister!!)
Rainbow Rink! : ) Lots of birthday celebrations as kids. Very fun times!
I loved going to the skating rink. My dad actually has a story about me that sums up the way I handle everything: The first time we went, I went around a couple times, but didn’t really jump in and skate a lot. Instead I watched. The next time, I dove in and spent the entire time skating. I like to plan and I like to know what I’m getting into.
For my sister’s 8th birthday party, they did Couple’s Skate, and my cousin, Abe, wanted to skate with someone, but all the girls at this party said no (smart girls! He didn’t grow up to be a nice person), so I couple-skated with him. *shudders* I was the consolation cousin.
I grew up in Puerto Rico and as far as I know, there aren’t any roller rinks there. If there are, they weren’t really a thing when I was growing up. Too bad though, they really seem like fun! In that weird awkward teenage way.
What a cute idea! So thoughtful 🙂
I do remember those parties and I never got asked to couples skate either! I had a boyfriend for like 2 weeks in 4th grade, but there weren’t any skating rink parties those 2 weeks, so I lost my only chance. Still, I loved those roller rink parties!
I went to the roller rink all the time!! It was the only cool place to have a birthday party when I was in middle school/elementary school!
My BFF and I were just reminiscing last night about the local roller rink in our hometown. We would go there ALL THE TIME!!! Sadly, it was torn down a few years back to build more housing.
haha i used to love the roller rink! I havent been probably since elementary school but that was a birthday party hot spot.
Oh man! Just reading this reminds me of “roller rink smell”. We used to go all of the time. They always had a couples skate, and paper flowers that you could buy for someone and have it announced over the loudspeaker. We all skated around secretly hoping someone would send us one. Such fun memories 🙂
I used to go to Skate King back in the day. Rollerblading to 90’s pop and strobe lights. Oh the good ol’ days!
BAHAHA stinky feet, broken wrists, sore butt bones, and those awesome games the DJ’s would play!!! There was like one where they would roll some huge dice and all the skating kids were in groups?? Anybody anybody??
I want to try the blueberry + pb combo!
Yes I used to love the roller rink they had a disco ball and would play 80s music especially Madonna songs and I absolutely loved it!
Quick question–how many weddings have you been/will be in? It seems like you’re always going to a bachelorette party or wedding! I haven’t graduated college yet, so I expect in the next few years more of my friends will start getting hitched 🙂
Ice skating rinks were more the thing where I live. I remember going there every Friday night with my friends. We thought we were so cool 😉
Love that idea for bridesmaids! I made a cute box for all of my girls and filled it with goodies! I plan to share my how-to-guide soon on the blog! It was so much fun to make for them and their reactions were priceless :).
Roller rink parties were the best! Do you remember the “dance teams” that used to choreograph dances on their skates? Haha
In elementary at the end of the year we took a trip to town and went to the zoo and the roller rink! I was horrible at it and busted all the time. Ours had laser tag so that was always a big deal to go play if. Last summer I worked at a summer day program for kids and Friday afternoons we would go to the same roller rink. Going there brought back so many memories. Now it’s just fun to go and watch all the kids skating. They’re so funny!
Omg I was just talking about the roller rink. I remember couple skate and reverse skate (which I never could do) . Every time I hear ‘hungry eyes’ I think of the skating rink.
The skating rink was the place to be! I loved eating FunDip at the rec. field during baseball season.
I spent two years as a speed skater going to meets in missouri. It was so painful with all the blisters but it was fun to beat the boys! !
Hmmm. I never would have though blueberries and almond butter, but I definitely will be trying it!
Absolutely! I recall going to the roller skating rink many times for holiday parties and birthday parties as a child. I wasn’t always the best roller skater, but I still had fun!
I loved going to the skating rink but mom would never let me go to the overnight skates…she said bad things happened there 🙂
