What is the easiest dinner in the world? Salmon!
Seriously.
Why did I go years and years without making this delicious fish?
Iām so glad I got over my fear of preparing salmon and tackled it because it pops up on our dinner menu all the time now!
Proof:
- Salmon Burgers
- Cashew-Crusted Salmon (<āI need to make this again! Yum.)
- Salmon with Raspberry Glaze
- Honey Soy Glazed Salmon
Tonightās salmon was rosemary garlic broiled salmon. I cooked the salmon the way I always do, seasoning it with garlic salt and rosemary.
Ryanās words: āI like the thyme you put on there.ā
It was rosemary, but Iāll take it. At least he pronounced thyme correctly! He used to say the āthā like ātheā rather than ātime.ā
I love listening to people say words differently. Ryan swears that I say the word ācashewā like āca-shoo.ā Lies, I tell you.
(Just in case you missed it, I previously posted a list of the 20 most commonly mispronounced food words on the blog. I definitely said quite a few words incorrectly!)
On the side of our salmon we ate roasted cauliflower, which I prepared by tossing the cauliflower in olive oil, seasoning it with garlic salt and roasting it in the oven at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.
Iām thinking I should tackle another dish that has always intimidated me sometime soon. Iāve always been intimidated by pot roast, prime rib and ham (the whole thing, not just a ham steaks). Pretty much any big meaty dish freaks me out!
Question of the Evening
- What is one word people have told you that you say funny?
Apparently when I was a little girl I used to say āpinkā like āpay-ink.ā And I also thought ācrayonā was pronounced ācrown.ā Thank you to my best friend Kristen for teaching me that one!
Bee Goes Bananas says
I don’t know if I’ve ever been told I say a word funny! I think a lot of American bloggers say things differently than I do though, as a Canadian blogger. I love accents! They’re so fun to listen to!
Lindsey says
I called them “crowns” for the longest time too š
My biggest pronunciation blunder these days is saying orange like “ore-inge”
peanutbutterfingers says
my dad says orange like “arnge.” š
beth says
i say “arnge” too when i’m being lazy and not speaking correctly as i know to do..and i’m from tennessee….that’s how everyone says it around here… and “warsh” for wash….
Emily says
Crayon is a funny one! I say it like “craaan.” I know it’s wrong and it’s like “cray-on” (hence the spelling, hah), but I just can’t change the habit! It takes serious effort if I ever have to say the word in public
peanutbutterfingers says
ha! i think i say it like you do, actually!
Lindsey says
Wait… ore-eenge might be more phonetically correct!
Jessica @ RUNMEM says
I say “arnge” instead of “orange”….not sure where that came from. Thanks for inspiring me to tackle some salmon later this week – may just have to try this simple recipe out!
peanutbutterfingers says
my dad does that too! he’s from pennsylvania – are you from that area?
Casey @ Pocket Full of Sunshine says
I have a hard time saying “Ruined.” It comes out like “Runed.” Haha.
Why do I never roast cauliflower?! It looks fantastic!
Kaella says
My fiance says I say “us” like UZ all the time and I used to leave the “g” out of strength and length until my college friend told me! When I was younger I couldn’t say Grandpa, so he became “gaga” and it stuck!
Jihane @SinfulSundays says
Up until a couple of years ago (read, my first year of college) I learned that it’s pronounced “outfit” and not “alfit”… LOL! yea, boi. private school education at its best! š
SN: I have never cooked salmon. If I were to try I would def do the one with the raspberry glaze. Sounds really good!
peanutbutterfingers says
haha that’s too funny!
Cindy says
My mom doesn’t cook much but the ham she makes is AMAZING and requested by every family member at every family event. I have mastered the technique too. Email if you want the secret family recipe!
peanutbutterfingers says
ooh thanks!!! i’m intrigued… š we may be hosting a “friendsgiving” at our house around thanksgiving & hope to serve a turkey and a ham, so i’ll keep you and your recipe in mind!!
Soleil Doux @ Soleil Doux Blog says
My boyfriend totally says “crown” and I tease him relentlessly! Of course, he tries to tell me that my way (cray-on) is wrong. HA! 8)
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
My husband says “crown” too. He is from Alaska, so I just figured it was an Alaskan thing but apparently not.
heather says
in the south jersey-philly-baltimore area, most people i know have a similar accent and crayon is pronounced “crown.” local dialects are funny. š
Mallory @ It's Only Life, After All says
I used to have a blanket when I was a child that I would call “bonkey”… I guess that’s not too odd though!
My boyfriend used to have a serious speech problem when he was a kid..he had to go to speech therapy and apparently in pre school no one understood him!
Mallory @ It's Only Life, After All says
my biggest pet peeve though is when people pronounce “especially” “expecially” ..gets me every time!
Soleil Doux @ Soleil Doux Blog says
I hear “Jagwire” quite a bit and it drives me nuts! People also tend to pronounce Porsche wrong as well. š
peanutbutterfingers says
that reminds me of espresso! it’s NOT EXpresso! š
Luci says
OMG! Yesss!! I hate it when people say “expresso”!
My hubby says “maztive” for the mastiff dog breed. He also says “Momento” for the movie “Memento”. Both of these drive me insane as they are just habitual mispronunciations vs being due to where he is from.
I know I say things a bit weird sometimes because I grew up in England, but no specific words are coming to mind right now. Haha!
Natalie says
I used to work in a coffee shop and about half of my coworkers and I used to get SO annoyed when the other half said ‘expresso.’ Imagine hearing that every time a drink is ordered!!
Hillary says
I’m sure I say a bunch of words funny, but I think it’s bizarre that all of my students (born and raised in MD) pronounce jaguar “jagwire.” ALL of them. I freak out (as their English teacher!): -uar does not = WIRE!
Cynthia says
I’m from MD too and I’ve only ever known it as “jagwire”! Now I’m actually wondering what the correct pronunciation is..
Hillary says
I pronounce it jag-wahr (that’s the closest I can get to phonetics!) I never heard it as jagwire until I moved here!
Amanda says
Chocolate and coffee, as all long islanders are prone to saying, pronounced Chawcolate and cawffee
Cait's Plate says
When I was little I used to say “down-t-stairs” – not sure where that extra “t” came from but luckily I’ve since gotten rid of it!
Heather says
I still say “crayonā but pronounce it like “crown” lol.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
When I was 5 I use to pronounce woodpecker as a “packwacker” haha I was hilarious in my day š
peanutbutterfingers says
hahahaha that is amazing
Tracie says
I get made fun of all the time for this one, but I say milk like “melk”. I don’t even notice that it sounds different when I say it, but apparently it’s really obvious!
peanutbutterfingers says
ryan does that too!!
Kelly says
I say “melk” as well! and for pillow i say “pellow” guess I dont like my “i’s”!
Steph says
i still say “crown” and sometimes im self concious about it but i dont really care haha. I also say adult completely wrong. people are always confused at to what word i’m saying lol
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
Yum! Roasted cauliflower is the best! š I haven’t ever really been called out for a funky pronunciation of something. People in North Dakota have told me I sound like I have a southern accent but that’s about it! lol. My man says kombucha kom-bach-oo and that makes me laugh every time.
peanutbutterfingers says
that would make me laugh, too!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
To this day my dad rips on me and my sisters for pronouncing crayons “crans” — he always says “its CRAY-YONS not crans”. Now we say crans to make him laugh.
Shayla @ The Good Life says
Ha I have a lot! When I was little I pronounced “magazine” like “mazagine”…and when people said “bless you” after you sneezed, I thought they were saying one word like “blesshu”…don’t even ask why I thought that! And currently I say “roof” funny, like ruff. Lol!
peanutbutterfingers says
blesshu! ha!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
My mom claims i have a “new england” accent and pronounce everything that “t vowel n” as “tin” for example “kitten” is pronounced “kittin.” I say she is crazy sauce or just jealous of the way I speak ;). I also tend to emphasize the “e” in egg
Lindsey @Textbooks and Cookbooks says
Sometimes I say umbrella funny…I’ve been told that I put the emphasis on the wrong syllable haha. Also, there’s the whole coupon debate. Is it cue-pon OR coo-pon?
peanutbutterfingers says
i always say cue-pon, but i feel self conscious saying it that way! i feel like coo-pon is the proper way! i sense a blog debate about this in the future…
Amber K says
Cue-pon? I had never even thought of this! I have heard that before, but I always say coo-pon.
Carrie says
It drives me crazy when people say “cue-PIN” lol
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I just went back and read the top 20 mispronounced words and they made me laugh! When I moved back to Canada, all my friends would be like “say it again, say that word again!” because my Scottish accent strengthened when I lived in the Middle East and went to a British school. It’s much weaker now though, which is probably a product of me having lived here for 5 years now, in addition to ‘Canadianizing’ my words so that I’m not always asked to “say it again!!!” š
Lauren says
Ha, I basically had the same dinner – baked salmon but roasted broccoli instead of cauliflower. It was so good!
Lisa says
Although I am from Jersey I don’t talk like the “real housewives”, however, anyone from Jersey says “water” like “wader”. I’ve tried to overcome it, but no luck. And whenever I am down south visiting family I somehow end up with this twisted jersey/southern accent. And I once said “y’all” to my neighbor’s kids after being down south for over a week. They had this puzzled look on their faces like they had no idea what I meant.
Gia @ rungiarun says
I am always told that I say “kitten” and “mitten” funny. I guess I enunciate the T’s. I mean there are 2 T’s. They should be enunciated right??
Kristin says
Julie-don’t be afraid of pot roast! Just throw it in the
Crockpot w/some cut up potatoes, carrots, and onion
Add some chicken or beef broth,a little water, seasonings,
And in 6-8 hours you will have a delicious melt in
your mouth roast—easy and delicious!! š
peanutbutterfingers says
i don’t even know what kind of meat to buy! do they sell meat called “pot roast” or is it just a roast? ah!
Haley says
I’ve found it before as “pot roast” but I usually buy what’s called “chuck roast” — it should be near the brisket.
Not sure if the grocery store you go to has a butcher on duty but you can always ask them (also, they might give you end pieces or hooves for Sadie!)
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I say caul-e-flower. My mom is Swiss, so I grew up hearing words a tad differently. Haha. My husband still makes fun of me (oh and all my siblings say it like that too!)
I LOVE salmon!!
Lauren says
We LOVE salmon and eat it nearly once a week. I’m so happy that my husband loves it just as much as I do because I can’t imagine not being able to cook this delectable fish.
Michelle W says
Up until a few months ago I pronounced espresso as expresso. I used to be a barista, too. Fail.
Nicole says
Pot Roast is easy. You throw it and some veggies in the crockpot and cook it for like 8 hours. Or in a dutch oven in the oven.
A ham is pretty much the same. Cover it with foil and put it in the oven for like 20 minutes per pound. Like a turkey.
The Kidless Kronicles
Wag More, Bark….
Mimi says
I’ve gotta poke fun at my husband on this one, but he pronounces pinch like “peench.” I get such a kick out of it! His family also says “sigh-rings” instead of sirens.
Julie says
My dad is 51 and still pronounces crayons as crowns LOL
Emma @ Microcosm of Life says
Wait…if that’s not how you pronounce cashew, that what is the right way?
My boyfriend pronounces “room” as “ruhm” and it’s the cutest thing in the world. I make fun of him but I love it.
peanutbutterfingers says
apparently i say it “like a sneeze” like “achoo” but “ca-shoo.”
Elizabeth says
Pot roast–2-3 lb chuck roast
1 can cream of mushroom.
1 packet onion soup mix
Veggies of your choice–carrots, celery, onions, red potatoes with skins on.
You cannot mess this up. It is so delicious. Alter it to your preference. Crockpot on low for 8 hours. I always add a little water-1/2 cup or so, lots of black pepper and I put the potatoes on top–so they won’t get soggy. I load the crockpot full–meat–soup mixture–veggies all around–onions close to meat. Feel free to mix up more soup mix and soup if your quantity needs it or you want more intense flavor. Also be sure and use the entire stalks of celery including leaves–flavor. This screams Sunday lunch! Feel free to serve with gravy.
peanutbutterfingers says
ooooh! i think this may be our sunday dinner. you have me drooling! thanks for the easy tips, elizabeth!
Morgan @ Endorphaholic says
I was a crown-crayon mixer-upper too! Apparently I have a Wisconsin accent even though I was born and raised in Southern California.
Shanna, like Banana says
My hubby says I say “bag” like bay-g. It’s just my WI roots comin’ out!
Emily@RunningPerspective says
YUMM SALMON for dinner for mee tooo!!! honestly is the easiest and best dinner everrr<3
love youu your blog always makes my dayy!
peanutbutterfingers says
thank you emily! your comment made my day! š
Ruth says
I say words like “hold” and “folder” differently from the boyfriend. Something about the L-D combo that I just do my own way.
I have a pot roast suggestion: get yourself a crock pot and you’ll have fool proof pot roast in no time flat. I live in a 4-season zone, but the crock pot saves me in the summer when I want a hot meal without heating up the house.
Kayla @ Sprouty Buns says
When I was little I would say I-RUN instead of Iron … I still get self conscious saying it today š
Red Head, Yellow Dog says
This is a little different but when i was little I had a lisp and said “s” like “th.” Of course I didn’t know I had a lisp. And proceeded to name all of my stuffed animals “Susy” or, how I said it, “Thuthy.” Seriously. all of them.
peanutbutterfingers says
that is adorable š
'Dee @ 'Dee's Garret says
I grew up in Maine but moved to Texas when I was 14. I felt like such a fish out of water with my accent! I really got stared at when I pronounced such things as “aunt”, “route”, etc. In Maine-ese, those were “ahhnt” and “root” while in Texas-ese they were “ant” and “rowt”.
I actually picked up a little bit of a southern accent during my time there – – I think it was a teenage defense mechanism!
Marcella @ Sweet Marcella says
I still say “crown”! I say a lot of words wrong though…its just who I am š
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
Big meats scare me too! Not sure what’s so scary about them though?
I’d like to conquer a brisket one of these days.
peanutbutterfingers says
oh me too. we should do it on the same day for moral support! š
Becky @ Fit Chick on the Fly says
Fun! Let’s do it…. gotta go on a recipe hunt first. I’m not going into this mission with out a game plan, or else my kitchen will look like a total disaster!
Emily says
Ahh I love salmon so much but don’t cook it nearly enough. Where do you guys purchase your salmon?? We usually get it froze at Trader Joe’s but I am looking for a smaller portion that would be easier to cook for one.
peanutbutterfingers says
i’m not sure how your grocery store works, but ours (publix) will sell you one small filet if you request it! i usually order 3/4 of a pound to split between me and ryan.
Kelly says
Being from Philly I say “wooder” instead of water. I also say specific strangly
Trish says
My boss was actually making fun of me tonight because of how I say “drawer.” I’m from Boston and live in Florida now – but I guess the accent lingers on. He told me I say draw – like draw a picture.
I have trouble with “orange” too. š
Nicole says
Growing up my mom would pronounce breakfast as “breakfrist” and I totally didn’t notice I picked it up until my boyfriend made fun of me recently. Then I caught my mom saying it wrong a while later and I confronted her about it. She vehemently denies any mispronunciation. Thankfully, I have corrected my bad habit now.
peanutbutterfingers says
my friend used to say “brefkist.” apparently it’s hard word!
Kim says
I TOTALLy say breakfrist!! I thought I broke the habit but I noticed myself say it the other day!! My sisters both do it too.
