Sadie went to the vet late this morning.
Care to ask her how it went?
Clearly she was a little nervous.
It was Sadie’s first time visiting a new vet in Ocala, but something about the smell of the vet’s office made her uneasy from the get-go. Even though she’d never been there before, she went into instant baby mode when we walked in.
Maybe all veterinary offices have the same smell?
We spent our time in the waiting room like this:
A 38-pound shaking dog in my lap. (Sadie gained three pounds since her last vet visit! Woo!)
The appointment itself went well. Sadie got some vaccinations, a heart worm screening and the usual pat down. We’re going back again in three weeks for a follow up appointment following her Lyme disease vaccination and Sadie is pumped!
That last picture is post-vaccinations. It was like Sadie knew all the tough stuff was over and immediately went back to being happy Sadie again.
Lunch
Lunch today came together quickly because I was awfully hungry when we arrived home from the vet.
I made a batch of tuna salad and served it on a whole wheat hot dog bun with tomato slices and a side of roasted Brussels sprouts.
Not too shabby.
Time to write, write, write!
Question of the Afternoon
- Does your pet react to the vet’s office or get nervous when they walk into certain locations?
Sadie was always totally cool about visiting the vet’s office until she got spayed. Since then, vet offices make her nervous. She also went through a little spell when she’d get nervous walking into PetSmart because we got her nails trimmed there once. She got over that one pretty quickly thanks to many nail clipping-free visits.

My dogs definately dread the vet. Its like our pets have this 6th sense about going. They try to run away and hide.
Rachel says
My cat has the same purring “problem”. My vet will blow in her face. She looks so mad. 🙂
Kim @ Living, Laughing & Losing says
Aww..Sadie is too cute! I love all of her pictures.
I recently adopted a cat and took him to the vet to get checked out. I figured he would be a nervous wreck, but he was happy as can be. When the vet tried to listen to his heart, he couldn’t hear anything because he was purring so loud. The assistant had to put a cotton ball soaked in alcohol by his nose to get him to stop. 🙂
Sloane @ Life Food and Beer says
I have a Husky that is very vocal. As soon as we walk in the Vets office, he starts howling and does not stop until we are driving home. It is kind of nice because we never have to sit in the waiting room and they come in really fast to see us. It can be really embarrassing though.

my dog shakes when going to the vet, but usually calms down during the wait…distracted by other dogs. but i’ve seen big huge dogs come to a screeching hault in the doorway. lol. they just know.
Molly from LifesLemons says
It’s crazy to read all these “Dogs Resisting Vet Comments!” It’s funny how they all are aware of where they are and how they react accordingly.
“I’m here?!? Not good, I know what happened last time!”
Laura @ My Pink Thumb says
My cat’s definitely hate going to the vet. it’s always a struggle to get them into the carrier to go there, but once we arrive, it’s a struggle to get them OUT!! lol
I don’t have a dog now, but we had a really nice golden when I was a kid. Unfortunately the poor thing was allergic to almost EVERYTHING and had to go to the vet a lot for allergy shots. She hated that place so much that she even knew what direction it was from our house. After pulling out of our street, we’d come to a T intersection. If we turned right, she knew we were going to the vet.. her tail would go between her legs and the poor thing would SHAKE! But.. if we turned left, she instantly knew we were going somewhere fun like my grandmother’s house and the tail would start wagging away. She was pretty smart. 😉
Christina @ Penniesontherun says
My cat has more of an issue with being in the carrier than being at the vet… I can’t bring myself to be that person who walks their cat on a leash though!
Debbie says
Haha 🙂 your first picture caption about it being touch and go is hilarious!

Jasper does the same thing…so I have a 60 pound shaking Vizsla in my lap!! They are too funny!
Sara @ The Foodie Diaries says
My dog doesn’t get nervous at the vet, but he always gets mopey and sad right before we leave for a vacation. The minute he sees a suitcase come out he starts to panic by walking around the house whining and having that “grump” look on his face!
Samantha says
Ha! Even I could tell the post-vaccine photo. She totally knew it was time to go.
Although my current boy doesn’t like my ironing board?! I am still figuring it out. But I think it is the noise it makes when I open/close it. (I kind of don’t blame him).
Generally my pups have all done well. The cats on the other hand…they can tell a week before hand.
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
Milo LOVES the vet because then he gets to see all the other dogs. Unfortunately, the other dogs don’t want to see him, so we are those people trying to restrain our dog
Patty says
I know how it feels to have a dog sit on you at the vet. I took my parent’s 85 lb. German Shepherd (who is a total wuss) and he did the same thing. The vet actually laughed at him because he refused to even look at the vet.
Carrie says
Ironically, I took my little guy (Nobu) to the vet today : ( Nobu immediately lies down, looking sick to his stomach. He does the same thing on the scale, when they go to weigh him. Poor little guy.
The last time Nobu went to the vet though (making note that my husband took him), he decided to try and escape… jumping off the 3-1/2′ high table and landing on his head. Naturally, I asked my husband what the veterinarian did to make sure Nobu didn’t have a head injury or anything. My husband told me the veterinarian wasn’t in the room and he didn’t bother to tell her. Really?!?!

Happy Peanut Butter Cookie Day!! =D Seeing your dog makes me my 3 legged dog that’s still in Japan with my family. :'(

Darn, I submitted and remembered something when I scrolled back up to Sadie on your lap!
The last time we took our dog (big!) to teh vet my sister was standing and holding her and she kicked her foot and it pulled her pants AND underwear down in the back…so the old couple behin dher got a view! haha

The first photo – best photo caption of Sadie yet! Amazing.

Yay for positive vet trips! Our pup, June just went over the weekend. She’s overweight so she and I have started our walking routine. She doesn’t get too nervous. Thankfully each time we go we are moved right back to an exam room so she’s not left in the waiting room shaking. She is OK with the vet assistants, maybe because they are female but the minute her vet came in she shrunk behind me and my husband to hide. Maybe it was his voice but she KNEW he was there for business she didn’t want to be a part of. She has a clean bill of health so that’s a blessing. Glad your doll is doing well too!
P.S. That tuna looks amazing and I am adding it to my shopping list for lunches this week! Thanks for the inspiration!
Talia @ Bite Size Wellness says
Sadie is so cute! My pup definitely gets stressed at the vet…but it is my cat that is the worst! She often goes into a ball in the vet sink…I’m like “Penny, everyone can still see you.” Oh animals! I wish they could talk!
Emily Butler @EmilysHomestead says
LOVE brussel sprouts! I’m gonna have to try that tuna salad, yum…my son has been loving the egg sandwich with jelly all day!
Marcee says
Awww…. sweet lovable Sadie. Glad things are good.
Wow Julie …. you have 70 + mine comments!!!! What a fan club …. amazing …. we all love ya!
A loyal following indeed. Looks as if your readers said it all.
Our poochies love vet visits. Dr. Sue has been witth us for years and years. Each and every pet is very comfortable. In time Sadie will be also.
You always pick cool subjects Julie!
P.S. Hah …. never get tired of those eggie sammies I see! Try this: 1 thick slice of Italian bread (toasted) ….. smothered w/tomato sauce ….. top with eggies …… sprinkle mozz + parm cheese ….. this is definitely gobble up delicious!!!!

My dog Louie hates the vet! As soon as we get to the parking lot he knows where he is and starts shaking. He also hates Petsmart I’m not sure about that one!
Marcee says
Ohmygosh. Poor little Louie. I can see he is just terrified of new and different situations/places. Baby steps Angela + lots of hugs and smooches.
Michelle @ Nice Lil Saturday says
I think my puppy is more excited to go to the vet now that she realizes she can get a large amount of treats for standing on a table; tough life!
Kristin says
Our vet’s office is in Petsmart. So the pups are always excited at first…. Then once they figure it out they are ready to go!
My 60 lb “puppy” also sits on the bench with me… Trying to bled in with the humans!
Erica @ For the Sake of Cake says
My pug is fine at the vet, unless he makes a lot of consecutive visits. A few months ago he was having some issues so he had to go several times within a week & he definitely knew where he was headed & for what. For just his yearly visits though, he’s fine. It helps that everyone at the vet’s office fawns over him & feeds him peanut butter!
Ali says
Mmmm your lunch looks fabulous! I’ve been wanting to make tuna salad for a while but I haven’t gotten my hands on some celery or carrots recently. Do you use yogurt or mayo for yours? And your dog is adorable!
Ali says
Never mind, I see you use light Miracle Whip! But do you think yogurt would taste good too?
Jaren@Kiwi Fit Blog says
That is hilarious that she was in your lap! What a cutie. The vet renders my 90lb chesapeake the same way.
Jeana says
I work in a vet clinic, and it’s definitely common for animals to act differently when they get in there. It’s not always nervousness, but as you can imagine, that happens quite often.
pluvk says
Our family dog used to shake AS SOON as we arrived at the vet’s office. I have no idea how she knew where we were, but shaking would commence without fail! And we’d literally have to drag her into the office. We looked like the world’s worst doggie family!
Cookie says
I’m actually shadowing at a vet clinic now because I’m applying to vet school in October, and I’ve seen so many dogs and cats pooping and peeing out of terror, or biting and scratching. It gets pretty messy.
They absolutely HATE nail trims. I have not seen an animal that has been cool with nail trims.
But I have to say that a lot of the owners are a lot more of a handful than the pets…and some people shouldn’t even own pets honestly.
Betsy says
I’ve never heard of a Lyme disease vaccination! We have our dog on Frontline, but I’d be interested in the vaccine because there are TONS of ticks and a high prevalence of LYme up here in PA.
Kristi @ lifesprinkles says
I’m a vet so I’ve definitely witnessed my fair share of animals shaking in their booties. They all definitely seem to know where they are from the get-go although some pets are genuinely happy to be there and I love it when I’m greeted with kisses the moment I go into a room. My dogs don’t tend to get too freaked out by being in the clinic since I bring them to work with me frequently but they definitely go into ‘freeze mode’ whenever I have to get them up on the table for any tests, vaccines, etc 🙂
Alex @ Healthy Life Happy Wife says
My pup does not like the vet or going anywhere near the subway. Her tail goes between her legs and she starts shaking. I always feel so bad!!
Tere says
But Sadie is so pretty… and sweet-looking… she could be a 120-lb “puppy” on your lap… (and I’m speaking from experience on that one!!)
Stephanie @My Freckled Life says
My dog Laney LOVES the vet. I think she thinks it’s like her own personal playground, where everyone pays attention to her. She’s usually jumping on all the chairs, and sniffing everything, and basically trying to lick everyone that walks by. The front desk ladies call her “Crazy Laney” and even if I call to ask a question, as soon as I say her name they all go “aww, it’s Crazy Laney’s mom!” haha
