I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and that you were able to spend some time with loved ones.
Ryan and I spent the weekend in Sarasota celebrating Mother’s Day with his family.
Isn’t Sadie the best at posing for group photos?
On Sunday morning we woke up a little after 7 a.m. and sipped on our hot mugs of coffee outside in the already hot and humid weather. I think it’s safe to say summer in Florida has arrived!
A big Mother’s Day breakfast was planned for 9 a.m. and by the time everyone arrived to dig into the delicious food, I was more than ready to eat!
We had a fantastic feast of scrambled eggs, bacon, fruit salad, pecan danish and French toast.
I started with fruit, a few strips of bacon, eggs and some pecan danish and went back for more bacon, danish, a piece of French toast and fruit.
Everyone refilled their plates a few times which is how family gatherings at my mother-in-law’s house always seem to go. The food is always too darn delicious to stop at one plate.
After breakfast, we meandered into the living room to hang out.
At one point, Ryan and I sat down and started playing around on his mom’s piano which was a blast! We used to play the piano together at my sorority house in college and it was fun to play around again.
We’re both pretty terrible, but have a lot of fun trying! The only song I can play somewhat well is “The First Noel,” and I can only get away with playing that song one month out of the year. Ryan can play “Unchained Melody.” We’re both one song wonders on the piano, with the exception of the songs everyone can play like “Heart and Soul.”
Our weekend in Sarasota passed way too quickly, but it was so wonderful to spend time with family. We hope to head down to visit again soon!
Question of the Morning
- Can you play an instrument?
- What instrument do you wish you could play?
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
Family time is always wonderful, but it’s especially great when good food is involved!
Mari says
I have played the piano for 13 years and absolutely love it. The one instrument I wish I COULD play would be guitar. There’s just something about a guitar that seriously can make me weak at the knees.
Charlotte @ Commitness to Fitness says
That breakfast spread looks soo delicious! Looks like a perfect weekend with family. Sadie is so cute in the picture sitting on Ryan! I played the drums for a little while growing up. I could probably still play a couple songs if i sat down at a set. Now i wish i could play piano- heart and soul is about the only one i know 🙂
Lisa says
I’m a trumpet player! I still do paid gigs. Between being a mom and my fitness soon to be career I don’t have a lot of time to practice but I am a member of a local concert band that rehearse weekly.
Lisa says
What a splendid day! Glad you had a nice celebration in honor of all the Mom’s in your life.
I love spending time with the family.
I never was instrument friendly! I seriously couldn’t play anything.
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
Hahhaa Sadie is too funny 🙂
I used to play the violin in elementary school, but I played it very poorly.
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
What a fun Mother’s Day! I’m so glad you had a wonderful time with Ryan’s family!
Cori @ olivetorun says
I’ve never learned to play an instrument but I have the fingers of a pianist and the heart of a drummer 🙂
Kendra says
Sounds like a great way to spend Mother’s Day! I played the oboe and piano when I was younger, and wish I still had piano skills. I would also love to play the guitar. My brother plays guitar whenever we get together, and it is so much fun!
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
Love Sadie’s pose! 🙂
I used to play the organ when I was younger, but its been years since I played. I don’t remember much, so I’m sure I’d be terrible now!
Carly @ Snack Therapy says
You should be proud of your piano skills- all I can play is “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” In fact, in sixth grade, I taught myself to play that song on phone keys. Pretty impressive, eh?
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
Mmmm that spread looks delicious!! Well in elementary/middle school I “played” the violin aka I was AWFUL!! I couldn’t read the music, my parents were happy when I called it quits! I wish I knew how to play the piano though!
Allison says
That is so sweet that you guys play piano together!
Ashli @ But What About Protein? says
My musical ability doesn’t extend past learning the recorder in primary school – haha!
I would LOVE to play the bagpipes though!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
i played guitar for a few years and clarinet for a few years… not very good at either haha i can play a couple songs on the piano.. heart and soul being one of them obviously!
Beth @ Mangoes and Miles says
That pecan danish looks so good! Almost like a cinnamon bun…but probably better. 🙂
I played the violin for a very long time, and then the piano for a few years when I was very young. I had a mean Russian teacher who would make me cry every lesson…you can imagine why I stopped after a few years!
Christine@ Apple of My Eye says
It looks like you had such a nice time! Sadie always cracks me up. Mother’s Day brunches are the best, so much delicious food!
Haha I can play…. Heart and Soul and that’s it!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I took piano lessons from like 1st grade through 5th grade, but I’m not exactly good at it anymore!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I played flute in junior high and high school. I took guitar lessons in high school. I can play the piano (very badly) because of my musical knowledge from playing flute and guitar.
Jeanie @ Breakfast for Dinner says
Sadie is too cute right on Ryan’s lap! Her personal space issues remind me of my dog’s! Lately he has been creeping onto my lap as well, and he is 70 lbs!
I can’t play any instruments, and was forced to in college. It ended up being one of my most difficult classes of undergrad: Class Piano!
Molly @ There Goes Molly Rose says
My husband and I love playing around on the piano! I can read sheet music but I’m pretty slow, while my husband watches YouTube tutorial videos and can seriously play from watching! Impressed wife over here 😉 also, I played the trumpet in middle school, but we don’t talk about that….
Becky says
I wish I was musically talented, but I am not in the least bit! I would love to play the piano or violin though! I think they are both such beautiful instruments!
Tara says
It’s always great to have a MIL to celebrate with when your own mom is too far away!
I can also only play one song on the piano: the beginning of Fur Elise. My mom is probably so mad because she paid for 5 years of piano lessons for me to come out and play the most common song only, ha.
Ashlee@HisnHers says
Oh yes I’m a pro at Heart & Soul 😉
Beth Sheridan says
What a fun weekend! I grew up in a very musically inclined family I’ve been playing the piano since I was five years old (wow, that means I’ve been playing for 25 years now, oh me) but I can’t imagine any family function without some kind of music being involved…Even just playing around 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Your brunch looks awesome, especially all of that fresh fruit! Yay for Summertime! 🙂
Super cute dress, too, by the way!!
Pooja @ Running the Body says
What a fun Mother’s Day!
I used to play the piano, but ditched it after a few years for choir. I thought I was soo clever because I would tell people (when they asked if I played an instrument) that I played the “vocal cord.” Needless to say, 13-year-old me was a creature.
Christina @TheTinyRunner says
The food looks amazing!!! I wish I could play guitar… I tried to learn but kept getting so frustrated with it.. maybe once I gain some patience I will try again!
Vicki says
I played the violin from 4th grade through high school, but kind of fell off in college since I wasn’t in the orchestra. Now it’s kind of just sitting around in the basement. A couple of years ago I made the new year’s resolution to pick it up at least once that year, but when I went to do that, the pegs were stuck and I wasn’t able to tune them properly so I just ended up plucking at the strings with it terribly out of tune.
Sonja @ The {Happy} Travel Bug says
I used to play the flute and piano, but I always dreamed of being in an all girl band and playing the drums. My teenage kids find this HILARIOUS! Which it really kind of is, but oh well, it’s my dream! 😉
Nicole says
The breakfast looks delicious!! I played the clarinet in elementary school, along with the drums and other percussion instruments such as the triangle 😉
Mallory says
Fun! I am classically trained in piano (12+ years) but haven’t played in a while
Brittany @ DulceVie says
All of that food looks so good! It looks like you guys had a lovely Mother’s Day 🙂
Sara @ sarasmiles says
What a nice celebration y’all had!
I used to play the piano for years. The piano is still in my parents house, which my mom says she is saving for me. I think I am definitely going to take it up again one day, It’s so therapeutic!
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Looks like you guys had a lovely Mother’s Day! I played the piano from first through sixth grades, and I can still figure out my way around a keyboard, but I definitely don’t know anything by memory, and I’m much better at right hand/treble clef playing and reading than left hand/bass clef. I also played the trumpet from fifth grade all the way through college graduation (which is why I’m so much better at reading treble clef — I’m way more familiar with it!). I’ve only touched my trumpet a couple of times since I graduated a year ago, though.
Brittany @ Balance and Bananas says
That French toast looks soooo yummy!! Do you have the recipe for that?!?
I’ve been playing guitar since 9th grade 🙂 But I’d love to learn piano as well!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
I wish I did, but they just made it without measuring anything. I know that they use pretty heavy ingredients like half ‘n’ half instead of milk with the eggs… plus cinnamon!
Brittany @ Balance and Bananas says
Ooooo that sounds good! I have to try that 🙂 Thanks!
Emily says
I took piano lessons twice growing up and quit both times! I regret that so much because I LOVE piano music! My husband can read music but likes to sing a long in funny voices. It makes for a great time 😉
Beks says
That sounds like a fun weekend. I started playing piano when I was five, and took lessons every year until I graduated from college in 2009. I’m now 27 (almost 28), and haven’t played in awhile, but I have a couple of songs that are burned into my fingers that I can pull out to show off (one being “Only Hope” from “A Walk To Remember.”).
That sounds like a fun weekend. Spending weekends with family is a lot of fun.
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy says
I play the Piano! It’s my heart and soul. My boyfriend plays the guitar and has an amazing voice. We have small town dreams of playing a gig together at the local bistros one day!
Beth Snyder says
I took piano lessons as a kid but have forgotten it all, including how to read sheet music. I can play Pachabel Cannon in D from muscle memory though. I used to love that song and would sit and play it for hours on end. So needless to say my family hates when I sit down at a piano because they’re only getting one song and if I mess up (which usually happens) I start back over until I get it right. Ha!
Elisabeth says
I played the flute from elementary through high school – haven’t played in years. I also taught myself saxophone in high school & took up the oboe in college. I can play the piano a little bit, but have thought about taking lessons to really learn. Probably the one instrument I’d really like to seriously take up is the cello.
lisa fine says
I love having breakfast and brunch with my family. We had a brunch yesterday, which was wonderful and we had all kinds of great food.
I grew up playing the piano and violin, but haven’t played either in years. It’d be fun to take lessons again one day, maybe, but for now I’m enjoying lots of other things to do.
Lauren says
I played the piano in midde school/high school and miss it a lot! I meander to my piano every now and then to break out some Coldplay. The best is playing songs you truly love and I enjoy every minute of playing The Scientist and my all time favorites 🙂
Your brunch spread looks delish!
Rowena says
I played piano in high school, wish I’d kept it up. I can still play Elton John’s Song for Guy on demand though, I have no idea why that stuck in my mind above all the other sheet music I used to play. Anyway sounds like you had a great Mother’s Day 🙂
Ashley says
I’ve had lessons in guitar, clarinet, and piano but none of them have ever seemed to stick. I wish I was better at guitar or piano or maybe the drums? Too bad I aint got no rhythm.
Brooke @ Running In Heels says
What a fun mothers day! And oh Sadie.. Vizslas are one in the same, I’m telling ya! 🙂
Jen @ Chocolate Chips & Tricep Dips says
I love a big breakfast! The food looked delicious!
I took piano lessons for 5 years, and I played the clarinet for 3 years, but I’m not very good at either one now. I’m glad I have a basic understanding of music though. It comes in handy sometimes.
Claire @ Flake and Cake says
It looks like you had a fab weekend! Haha I love Sadie in pictures, so funny. The one of her sat of Ryan is hilarious.
Big brunches are the best, gives you lots of time to sit and enjoy time with family 🙂
Jessica R @ fromthekitchentotheroad says
I played the flute from 4-6th grade but that is it. I want to learn how to play the piano and a stringed instrument like the cello. My husband can play just about anything and sings really well. I am kind of jealous.
Alyssa @ Road to RD says
That brunch looks delicious! I played the piano and violin throughout elementary school, and the French horn in middle school.
