I learned this valuable lesson as I assembled my lunch in the breakroom today and I heard several people proclaim, “Ew, what is that smell?”
I heated up my ‘kraut and headed on my merry way, making a mental note not to enjoy lunches that include sauerkraut during peak lunchtimes.
I served the stinky sauerkraut on top of an aidells Italian Style chicken sausage which I enjoyed in a super-soft Nature’s Own Whitewheat hot dog bun.
The sauerkraut/chicken sausage combo was delish!
I know sauerkraut isn’t for everyone, but for a German girl like me, it’s the jam!
Alongside my protein-packed sausage I enjoyed fresh grape tomatoes and cucumber slices for some color.
Pre- lunch I also enjoyed an iced green tea from Starbucks that I picked up after stopping by my orthodontist’s office to get my permanent bottom retainer in. (How cool am I? 😉 )
(Wow. Can’t believe I just posted that pic. We’re all officially best friends now.)
Sad news though… the green tea quickly went from this:
To this:
I seriously inhale any cold beverage other than water. Water is the only thing I seem to struggle chug-a-chuggin’.

Question of the Afternoon
What nationality are you? Do you like foods that are typically associated with your nationality?
I am German and Swedish (right, Mama?). I adore foods associated with my nationality, including brats, cabbage, apple strudel and pretzels.
lowandbhold says
I used to hate kraut, but now I love it. I agree that it doesn’t smell fabulous though.
My last name is Beck, which sounds German and my mom’s maiden name is McCreary, which sounds Irish, but I look Native American and I was born in Oklahoma. We really don’t have a good family tree/genial history so I just kind of have to guess.
Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says
Love “Kraut. Everyone judges me when I go to barbecue with my big jar!

Kailey@MissionHealthy says

My Pennsylvania (German) bf loves kraut too. He always wants to make it for New Years and I just want my black eyed peas. I hate the smell.
The main ones for me are French, English, and German. But overall a Cajun that doesn’t eat seafood. I do love Red Beans and Rice.
peanutbutterfingers says
i was born in PA! apparently us kraut-lovers come from the same area. 🙂
Tracey @ I'm Not Superhuman says
I’m a kraut hater, and I hate it when I smell others making it. (Sorry.) I’m Irish-Italian so I guess I like the foods of my heritage. Well, maybe not the Irish stuff, but definitely Italian food!

Oh no, you’re the stinky lunch girl! 😉
I am German, Swedish, and Irish. I don’t eat sausage or sauerkraut. I’m not a fan of fish. And I don’t drink beer.
I think I was meant to be Mexican or Italian because those are the genre of foods I can resonate with!
kristyn says
wow you just made sauerkraut and sausage look really good lol.. and i dont like either one.. hmmm maybe i should give it another try 🙂
Tina says
I actually have no clue what my nationality is since it’s such a mix. I guess if I go way back it’s German and British, but my family was one of the first to come to GA (and been here ever since) and inhabit it so now there are plenty of other things mixed in.
As for German food – eh. Not my favorite, but I’ll eat it. I have much stronger taste buds for Latin cuisine. Yum!
Kaitlyn says
So, this is pretty random.. but are you a regular coffee drinker? I’m in college and I’m trying to avoid the habit all together! My brother is encouraging me to drink green tea instead. I was just wondering your opinion on that! 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i probably drink 3 cups of coffee a week or so. i just try to keep my caffeine consumption rather low b/c it realllllly affects me and can give me headaches & make me feel jittery (yes, even one cup sometimes!). i’ve actually read a lot of articles about the BENEFITS of consuming coffee daily. here’s an example of one: http://health.usnews.com/health-news/diet-fitness/articles/2009/06/25/is-coffee-bad-for-you-actually-drinking-coffee-may-be-good-for-you.html
Stefanie says
I think it’s so cool that you have a German heritage and enjoy your sauerkraut just like a German girl should. I’m German, too, and I also live there. We incorporate sauerkraut in A LOT of dishes (including noodle dishes ;-)), but I NEVER had it on a hot dog. Guess that’s an American thing after all. But I will definitely try it, looks yummy!!
I’ve never commented before but I really like your blog. You make healthy eating look so easy and doable and I always find some new, great recepies to try. Well done!
kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com says

Amy @ EdibleAmy says
Ha! Nice retainer pic, you crack me up! I am a little bit Italian, Scottish, Irish and Polish. I LOVE Italian food and pretty much any kind of food so I think that covers my background 🙂 On a Starbucks note, I love the passion fruit shaken iced tea. Wow it is fruity heaven!
coffeeismycarrot says
I’m Scottish and proud of it (hence the bagpipes at my wedding 🙂 ) but I’m not sure blood pudding or haggas are ever going to be delicacies to me.
Anna says

I”m Italian, but saurkraut is the BOMB! It might stink, but daaang is it tasty, especially the way you used it in your lunch 😉 I love this Italian dessert called “zabligione” … I may have spelled that wrong…haha, basically it’s this amazing whipped cream with egg, sugar and white wine topped with fresh berries. It’s to DIE for, ahhh! I could go for one right now.
Congrats to the lucky winners, and I cannot wait for your next giveaway 😀 seems exciting!!
Have a great day!!!
Tracey @ TropicalHappiness says
Ok, I NEED TO KNOW MORE ABOUT YOUR RETAINER. I’m in the exact same boat– I am finishing up my invisalign (but I am constantly doing one more set of refinements… I feel like it is never ending, but it’s partly my fault because for the past 2 refinements, I’ve requested that they be done without the attachments. They can be done without attachments but I’m learning that I don’t think they work as well.)
Anyway, my ortho mentioned a permanent retainer on my bottom teeth- exactly like you have- due to the crowding I had.
How do they put it in? Does it hurt? What do they attach it to?? I know they say “permanent” — does it really stay there for years and years? Does it feel weird? Does it affect brushing your teeth? Eek, please tell… I’ve never known anyone who has one and I fear that my ortho is going to be putting it in soon!
peanutbutterfingers says
it took less than 10 min. to get the retainer put in and it didn’t hurt at all! she used glue and stuck it in, and then went pack in w/ one of those crazy dental tools to scrape away the excess glue. it definitely feels kinda funky, but not crazy and it isn’t bothersome. brushing your teeth isn’t affected at all!
i hope this helps!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’m Polish and Italian so the Polish girl in me LOVES sauerkraut. I’ve never tried it on a sausage before, though. On my to-do list now, haha. I pretty much love all Italian food, but who doesn’t? I tend to cook more Italian food, too, because I find it simpler.
Lauren @ BIOCHEMISTA says
I’m also Swedish! 50% Swedish and 50% Portuguese!
Chaaron says
Love the retainer pic! I still wear mine religiously, so I can appreciate another girl with metal in her mouth!
I’m French/English/German/Irish (all 25%) and I LOVE sauerkraut and sausages (pref. turkey and chicken) as well as everything that French cuisine has to offer! Especially a delicious baguette. Yum!
theprocessofhealing says
So your lunch looks GOOD!!
And I chug beverages besides water too! Iced coffees?! Gone in a minute flat.
SUPER cute dress!
TheKetchupDiaries says
Loved the teeth pic! You’re so cute. I’m Portuguese and definitely enjoy linguica and chourico!
Lauren says
I love sauerkraut but rarely eat it. I don’t even think I would know where to find it in the store.
I’m also quite good at chugging cold beverages, especially in the summer. Iced Coffee and smoothies particularly. Once I start sipping, I can’t pull my lips away!
peanutbutterfingers says
check by the canned veggies!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I just rediscovered sauerkraut when my brother bought some for his 4th of July BBQ. It’s the best! I have a permanent retainer too…I love not having to worry about wearing one at night, but it also gets stuff stuck in it all the time!
renn says

Amber K says
I wish I knew! I know there are random parts of : Polish, German, English, and other….stuff… but I don’t know what! So I don’t feel a tie to any particular type of food.
