Me.
And Ryan.
Apparently we are a match made in motion-sickness heaven.
The morning started out well enough with a hearty breakfast of steel cut oats with fresh blueberries and a scoop of peanut butter.
Unfortunately after heading out on the boat, my stomach took a turn for the worse.
Once we arrived at the bouy indicating we’d reached our first scuba diving location, the boat got a-rockin’ and serious nausea set in for me.
Ryan, my dad and our friend Steve got into the water right away and headed down to explore a sunken ship. My sister, mom and I stayed at the surface because they were going to depth that was a little too deep for us.
Once Ryan arrived back at the surface, he joined me in the sea sick club. Nausea hit him like a ton of bricks and he puked over the side of the boat. Shortly after I was hurling too. 🙁
As we headed out to the next dive location, I felt determined to at least get one decent dive in. I suited up, puking in between putting on my wet suit and fins. It was highly unattractive.
I felt confident that once I got under water where the waves couldn’t get to me, I’d feel much better.
Boy was I right!!!
One hundred feet under the water felt like heaven. My nausea dissipated and I got to explore an amazingly beautiful ship that the Coast Guard sunk to create a wonderful dive site. The fish were gorgeous and we even saw a barracuda (yikes!). I only wish I could have stayed under water for hours!
Sadly the minute I boarded the boat, nausea set in again. After puking yet again, we decided my stomach and Ryan’s stomach couldn’t handle a whole day of rockin’ on the boat.
We were dropped off at the condo and after about 10 minutes on land I felt 90 percent better. Ryan is still a little worse for wear, but we’re getting some food and water into his belly and I hope he improves soon. Poor boy. 🙁
All of the pictures from our day on the boat are on my mom’s camera, so I’ll be sure to post them later. She said she got a picture of me and Ryan when we were lookin’ like death, so I’m sure that will amuse you guys. 😉
Lunch
When we arrived back at our room, I made myself a big lunch of manicotti, grapes and peanut butter M&Ms.
I refilled this plate for seconds. My belly needed food!
I’m blogging from a little cafe outside our room and it is truly gorgeous here. The water is perfectly turquoise. I’m trying not to be too upset that our day of scuba diving was cut short, but it’s really, really hard. I have been looking forward to a day of diving for months now and feel pretty bummed that I was only able to experience one dive (though it was a great one).
Next time I will be sure to take sea-sick medication the night before and the morning of a dive. Lesson learned!
Please make me feel like I’m not alone… Have you ever gotten sick before or during an event you were really looking forward to?
Naomi (onefitfoodie) says
sea sickness is te worst! and never goes away once you have it! i have gotten sick, never thew up but extremely nauseas and head over the side of the boat just in case! i have the worst sea legs!
glad you got in a good dive though!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
What a bummer! I sometimes get car sick and it is rough. I can’t imagine getting sea sick. 🙁
peanutbutterfingers says
i get car sick too… such a pain in the tookus.
Kelly says
Aww sorry you both got sea sick! Feel better!
Jess says
that’s terrible that you and Ryan both got sea sick! I’m sorry 🙁
Yes I’ve totally gotten sea sick before … quite a few times. Once on a cruise and once on a ‘booze cruise’ in Key West. I actually didn’t have any booze on the last one and was just nauseous from all of the rockin’. A sea sick friend and I sat on the floor of the boat and just dangled our feet overboard the entire time while everyone else boozed it up!
peanutbutterfingers says
awww… that’s how i felt. so pathetic. 🙁
Courtney @ Three Months says
Oh no! Such an awful feeling. I went on a sailing trip in May with friends that started down in The Bahamas and ended in North Carolina. I got sick on the first day out at sea…ugh! It was not fun! Glad you’re feeling better!
Avery says
YES!
In high school my chorus took a cruise to the Bahamas. I was SO excited! I got to explore the shops and markets on the first day, and the next day I was looking forward to white sand and clear waters! Unfortunately, that night I woke up sick to my stomach and couldn’t stop throwing up 🙁 Apparently I had caught some “mysterious virus” and had to stay behind throwing up all day in a stupid 4×4 cruise room while my peers all enjoyed the Bahama sun.. All I could think about was “Why now!? Why today?” Grr. It was a bummer.. but you’re not alone! It happens! You’re lucky you got one good dive in! 🙂
Ashley S says
Oh no, that stinks! At least you were able to still enjoy some of it though. We are buying a cabin cruiser boat next weekend and I’m scared that will happen to me to when I’m in the cabin. I don’t get nauseated easily, so I have my fingers crossed.
I wanted to ask you a question abou the xanthan gum you put in your smoothies, does it really make them a lot thicker? I see a lot of people use guar gum and my store actually has both gums, so I wasn’t sure which one to get! Thanks!
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ve never tried guar gum, but xanthan gum realllllly does make smoothies thicker and creamier. it honestly makes a huge difference. you only need a little bit, so the high price can be justified (at least a little bit) since you can take more than a year to go through a whole bag!
Kelly says
Oh no! I have bad motion sickness too! I got sick on a Cruise ship!!!
Monique@She's Going The Distance says
omg, I get seasick all the time. It sucks!! In fact, I get carsick all the time. Luckily, planesickness hasn’t really hit me…. yet.
Glad you’re feeling better!
peanutbutterfingers says
that’s how i am! sea sick & car sick… but i’m okay in planes… for now. 😉
Amanda @ My Switch to Scrubs says
I had a 24 hour stomach bug on my senior year of college spring break. Luckily, it only lasted the 1 day, but I was in reallllly rough shape!
Hope you’re feeling better!
ellaroo88 says
thanksgiving! I ran a high fever and spaced out all day. My Aunt tried to play scrabble with she told me how funny/sad it was to watch me try to stay awake. Sad part is I won’t get that food for another year!
So sorry to hear about the stomach. . . motion sickness is no fun
mm says
Hope you both feel better soon! It sucks to feel sick on a holiday weekend! I’ve never had any kind of motion sickness, but I’ve had migraines that have made me throw up at inopportune times. 🙁
Mellissa says
I got sick on a cruise in college but was also really sick during my junior prom. It was less than fun to get puking in a prom dress!
erica says
when i was younger i went on an alaskan cruise and i got totally sea sick (and we were only in the channel!) i would only come out of the room for meals, and even that was a struggle…eventually someone told me to see the ship doctor…he gave me a shot and i was completely fine for the rest of the trip! till this day i wonder what that shot was…
peanutbutterfingers says
i wonder, too! gimme some o’ that!
Maggie says
Awww i hope you feel better!
Lori says
Do not feel bad, I got sea sick on a deep sea fishing trip. I threw up for 5 hours straight and then fell asleep the last 3 hours of the trip, Needless to say, I didn’t catch any fish.
Natalie says
oh no!! sea sickness is not fun at all =( i remember when i went to catalina island (an island off of Los Angeles) for a week of swimming/snorkeling/hiking/canoeing, we had to take a 45 minute boatride over, and EVERYONE i was with got seasick. we were all sprawled over our luggage (lying there, feeling sick), vomiting (and they served us soda on the boat, which was not a good combo) … it was not fun, but it was certainly memorable! at least when we got over to the island, it was totally worth it and we had a ton of fun!
Amber K says
Hope you’re feeling better now! I hate getting sick on fun trips.
Sara says
Try the wristbands for motion sickness. I (thankfully) don’t get motion sickness, but my Mom swears by them. I think they are less than $10, so not a big investment.
Rachelle says
C-Bands, they work!
Sara says
Awww, that sucks! I hope you guys feel better. Being sick on trips is just terrible.
Linda says
The first time hubby took me to Cirque Du Soliel I got so sick right before we went in. I was so upset and almost wanted to go home. I stuck it out and was ok for the rest of the show!
Jackie (Peaces of Earth) says
Awww, I’m so sorry you guys had to deal with that!! I get sea sick too and it SUCKS. It’s not fair that some people don’t, what’s wrong with them?! 😉 I was in Hawaii and we took kayak’s out to go snorkeling. I literally was sick 50 ft off the beach and there were no waves (that I could see)!!! It didn’t make any sense. I tried to snorkel but just couldn’t, so I waited on the beach for everyone. It was really sad. I’m glad you got one good dive in though! Sounds amazing.
Ally @ Sweet & Savory says
Bummer! I’ve also gotten sick on a boat…it’s the worst…and worst of all is that you KNOW you are stuck out there and any chance of getting back to land quick is out. You poor thing!
Shanna, like Banana says
Oh you poor things. I too get motio sickness. If you are looking for a natural fix try Ginger 🙂
elaine @ Om Sweet Om says
All the girls in my family get motion sickness, especially my mom! We were on a vacation in Hawaii once and we went out on a boat for snorkeling. My mom was vomiting the whole time! 🙁 Poor her. But the funny thing was, her vomit attracted tons of fish! Lol they were all eating that stuff.
Meg says
I hope you feel better! I’ve never gotten motion sickness on a boat, but I bet it’s not fun 🙁 glad you got some good carbs in your belly to settle it! Thinking of ya’ll 🙂
edenseats says
My Bat Mitzvah, I dont know if you know that that is, but its a very important tradition for Jews, (maybe second to marriage) and I got the WORST step throat. I was so bummed cause it was a great party! we had three different cuisines of food stations and a “doughnut” bar for dessert. I as in pain clutching a Halls bag the whole time!
Feel better, I got sea sick once and I know its not pleasant!
Britta says
I went on a dolphin expedition in Bimini earlier this summer. I was so excited to get to spend a week out to sea on a lovely boat with lovely people…and to get to swim with dolphins!!! But, you guessed it…I spend 75% of the time passed out because I had to take so much flippin gravatol just to keep my food down 🙁 Being sea sick is the WORST!!
jennyinnewyork says
i get sea sick on small boats like that too. can you stop at the drug store and pick up those sea sick bands they sell? I’m not sure if they work… but its worth a try!
Miranda @ MirandasJeans says
Last winter when I was in the Dominican I got sick while diving. Rather about 10 minuets before we were about to surface I started to feel ‘off’. We were only 30 feel down, but as soon as I got back to the surface, yup I was sick. However noone noticed becaues I was just a little sick. The lady who surfaced before me was WAY sick. I could def tell what she had for lunch lol gross!
Kelly Olexa says
OMG. Reading your post made me realize why I am sooo not into ever doing a cruise. The thought of being sea-sick and then, not being able to get off the boat and get on land….that would destroy me. Perhaps I’m a wimp but let me tell you, I’m NOT down with sea-sickness. It’s bad enough when I am stuck with a psycho cab driver who gets me so carsick from driving like a madman that I think I will vomit in the back seat…..
So sorry you both had to deal with that, but it sounds like you had fun later. 😉
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
It gives me the bajeebi weebies thinking you were 100 feet under water. I am so claustrophobic. I hope you both are doing better now. Turquoise water – ahhh!
effcubed says
I will always remember when I was in 6th grade my class went on a field trip to a campground 3 hours away. I became so sick that I had to run to the bathroom and…
…well I think you can guess what happened then.
Hope you guys feel better soon!
Barbara says
I empathize with you more than you’ll ever know! The ferry ride from Ft. Lauderdale to Bahamas almost KILLED ME. I was keeled over IN THE LOUNGE (packed for evening singing and poker) literally prostrate over 3 imbedded chairs with metal arm seperators (not comfortable). Nausea is my worst enemy. I hate feeling nauseated and dizzy. I am so glad you guys are getting better!!! I’m glad you had amazing family to take you back home! I on the other hand, looked like the other 60% of degenerate drunks who had indulged a bit too much at the open bar! lol
Marissa says
Aww, I’m so sorry! I can only imagine how much that sucks. Don’t worry, though, you’re not alone! I’m right there with you. I used to get sick so much, I felt like half my life was passing me by. At least you got to dive in once, right? I’ll give you a lot of credit for that–if I was throwing up, I’d demand to be taken back to shore right then and there! But being under the water helps a lot. Whenever it gets rough when we’re on the boat, I just jump in until it calms down a bit. It sucks when it doesn’t calm down. :[
heather says
Hi, I’ve been reading your blog for awhile and have never commented. but i was wondering if you’ve tried triptone? you can buy it in most dive shops and it works wonders.
morriskr says
I get carsick and seasick. I will NEVER go on a cruise again, and there’s no way I’d go on a boat in the ocean. I wear the C-bands on road trips and they do help, but I still feel yucky for a while after we get to our destination. I usually have to drive. Just checking a text gets me nauseous in the car. SO annoying!
Heather @ For The Health Of It! says
Totally know how you feel! On our honeymoon in St. Kitt’s we took a catamaran tour over to Nevis. I had been on catamaran in the ocean before and was fine, but whoa! Not this time. Talk about sick! I was so embarressed at the thought of hurling in front of everyone, I finally just had to lay w/my face down in a towel for the entire trip. Not fun! Now I’m totally freaked out abour cruises. Never been on one, and don’t think I will ever go.
