After publishing my morning blog post and packing a small bag for the weekend yesterday, I hopped in the car with Ryan and Sadie and made the 2.5 hour drive to my mother-in-law’s house in Sarasota.
The drive itself wasn’t too bad. We didn’t run into any traffic and we had some pretty stellar road trip music.
“Heeeeey, yeah, I wanna shoop baby!” (Does anyone else picture Ellen singing “Shoop” whenever they hear this song? Love her.)
While Ryan and I had fun jammin’ to ‘90s music, Sadie exercised her pitiful expressions and tried to guilt me into letting her join me in the front seat.
She was very, very frustrated with me at this point, and touched her little wet nose to my elbow every other minute. She’s a treat.
Lunch
Once we arrived in Sarasota, my mother-in-law, Diane, greeted us with two barbeque pulled pork sandwiches that she bought from Alday’s food truck.
My sandwich was incredible!
I am picky when it comes to good barbeque, but Alday’s knows what they’re doing. The sandwich includes a half pound of the most succulent pork and Ryan and I inhaled our sandwiches. I let Sadie have a few bites of my pork because I started to fill up once I was 3/4 of the way through. It was big and beautiful. Mmm!
We spent the rest of the day with Diane and her boyfriend, Les, before driving to downtown Sarasota for dinner at Selva Grill at 6:30 p.m.
To start, we split the maya shrimp ceviche and Les let me try a bite of his mushroom soup.
When I hear “mushroom soup” my initial reaction is “no thanks,” but Les’ soup ended up being my favorite dish of the evening. It was so creamy! It reminded me of a bisque of some sort.
For my entrée, I ordered the ahi tuna and cleared my plate.
After dinner, we decided a stop at SweetBerries for some frozen custard was necessary. Ryan took me to SweetBerries during one of my first visits to Sarasota when we started dating and it quickly became tradition for us to grab custard during every visit to the area.
We were all pretty full from dinner, so Les and Diane split a cup of the Sarasota Sunset custard (vanilla custard with lots of berries) and Ryan and I split a cup of butterscotch custard.
It was the perfect ending to a fabulous day!
I’m currently sitting at the kitchen counter blogging away but better sign off to help with the preparations for today’s fall birthday brunch.
I hope your Sunday is a good one!

Mmm that sounds like a great dinner! Whenever I’m at a restaurant, if ahi tuna is on the menu, it pretty much always wins!

Sounds like a great night!! I lived in Sarasota until I was 16 and I always love reading about where you go when you visit there!! So many yummy places downtown. Have you tried epicure? It’s unbelievable 🙂

Salt N Pepa take me back to early teen years for sure!! Shoop and another song, Sexy Noises were my favorites!!! Of course, I think back and they were probably quite inappropriate at the time…..

What are you wearing? It looks so cute. Love the color too!

That BBQ sandwich looks delicious!! It’s hard to find good pulled pork, but when you do it’s seriously the best thing. Yum
Sara @ The Foodie Diaries says
My friends in college always used to sing “Shoop” to me because my last name is Shoup. It was alawys followed by “Shoup there it is!” (like WHOMP there it is) 😉 The 90’s seemed to love my last name haha!

Frozen yogurt, gelato, ice cream & frozen custard–> what ranks best for you?

Sweetberries is the JAM! I lived in Bradenton until I left for college, but I ALWAYS try to make it back there when I go to visit my parents. The cookie concrete is amazing- chocolate custard with cookie dough and oreos… omg! Ryan was definitely on point bringing you there on one of your first visits to Sarasota!

I have been reading your blog for a couple years (I love it!), but have never commented! I just had to comment on this post because I recently moved to Sarasota and I was just at Selva last night too! Such a great spot. Enjoy your time in Sarasota!

Ahh…pets and their manipulation skills. I’m loving the face she’s giving you. My Bella sits and paws at me when I’m not paying enough attention to her, and she is relentless until I stop what I’m doing and attend to her. They are the best! 🙂

90s on 90s for the win, all day e’ry day!
That BBQ sandwich looks delish. Much like honey mustard (the world’s best condiment, in my humble opinion), BBQ sauce can go on ANYTHING — with a few exceptions, of course. =]

I love the color of your top/dress/whatever you are wearing! Pale yellow is one of my favorite colors. 🙂

Bisques are always my fav soup! I’ve noticed you have started doing a lot of circuit workouts and less weight workouts (super sets, etc). Is there a reason or you just hve been enjoying circuits more?

Your posts always make me sooo hungry. I am going to need to find a good mushroom soup recipe now, that sounds delicious!

Love Salt ‘n Peppa!! Push It is totally a favourite of mine, but Shoop is WAY up there too. I only lived for 9 months of the 90s, but it seems like it was such a fun decade for music!! 90s themed parties are always my favourites!
I’ve never had ahi tuna, but I’m really looking forward to trying it sometime (soon hopefully!!).

You’re so lucky that Ryan likes 90’s music too…I think my husband would go crazy if we listened to it for 2.5 hours!

nice! Are we food twins or what? 😛 haha. I had the same exact lunch today! It was a bbq pulled pork sandwich just like that one from Hog Wild in Kansas. It was my first time trying pulled pork as I’ve only tried and cooked pulled chicken. And you guys seem to be having a great time together~enjoy the rest! <3

Sadie’s face looks just like my dog’s face when he wants to sit on the couch and cuddle. He only weighs about 60 pounds so he is not exactly a lap dog! 🙂
