Lunch today had to be quick because I was way too unproductive this morning and needed to kick it into gear this afternoon, beginning with a fast lunch!
A smoothie bowl!
Looks gross, tastes great.
In the mix:
- 1 c. milk
- 1 c. honey Greek yogurt
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 c. frozen strawberries
- 2 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 handful fresh spinach
Plus an unphotographed nectarine and some string cheese on the side.
Now for some fun!
Shower Sequence
About a week ago, Ryan and I were discussing our shower sequence. You know, what you wash first, second, third, etc. when you’re in the shower.
(We talk about really deep things. For the record, Ryan brought up this particular topic of conversation.)
We realized that we both have completely different shower sequences and it got me wondering what most people do first… shampoo/condition their hair or soap down the bod?
(Not sure why I decided to bring that picture out of the archives… The towel wrap screamed “shower!” to me and seemed like the closest thing I’d find for a blog appropriate picture for this topic. PBF = Nudie free zone. Oh and don’t you wear a towel wrap with black tights and slippers?)
Anyway, my shower sequence looks like this:
- Shampoo
- Wash body (while the shampoo is “setting,” so my hair gets extra clean)
- Shave legs (sometimes)
- Rinse out shampoo
- Conditioner
- Wash face (while conditioner is “setting,” so my hair gets extra silky)
- Rinse out conditioner
Ryan washes his face first, then his body and finishes with shampoo. Apparently he doesn’t bother with letting his shampoo “set” to get his hair extra clean. Does any one else do this? I can’t be the only one!
Question of the Afternoon
- What is your shower sequence?
Tess says
This is too funny, I just had a conversation about this a few days ago! We actually got onto the topic because everyone had a different brushing/flossing routine…does anyone know which comes first? Because the group I was with was 50/50.
I wash my hair, rinse it out right away (my hair tends to be dry, so I heard it’s bad to let shampoo sit in it?), put conditioner in, wash my body, shave, rinse conditioner out. My face wash is supposed to get rubbed into dry skin, so I wash my face before I shower!
Oh, and for the record, I brush then floss. 🙂
Tracy @ Tracy's Treats says
My shower sequence is always: shampoo, condition and let sit, body, face, rinse off conditioner….anndd…sometimes I brush my teeth in the shower. Is that weird?
brooke says
You let the shampoo set? I wash with shampoo and then let the conditioner set while I wash the rest of me.
sara says
I do it exactly like Ryan!
Lyndsay says
Haha that is the EXACT same as mine…I never change it up! Even if I skip the shampooing I still will wash my body and shave before putting in conditioner. I’ve recently been wondering though if washing my face gives my conditioner enough time to properly leave my hair as silky and smooth as possible. Hmm…
heather says
i didnt read through all of these, so i dont know ianyone else does this, but–i shower everyday when i wake up and i always brush my teeth while i’m waiting for my conditioner to penetrate(ha!). even when i dont wash my hair, i still take the time to brush my teeth after using soap and then everything’s done at the same time. my mom said she has the same habit and her mom told her she did it too. weird, huh?
Katie @ Healthy Heddleston says
Haha love this, mine is very similar:
1. Shampoo
2. Wash face / shave right leg if needed. (while the shampoo is “setting,” so my hair gets extra clean)
3. Rinse out shampoo
4. Conditioner
5. Wash body / shave left leg if needed (while conditioner is “setting,” so my hair gets extra silky)
6. Rinse out conditioner
ta da! very similar!
Megan says
I love this convo lol! My order is shampoo hair, rinse, condtion, wash face, wash body, shave armpits (sometimes legs if they’re gross) and then I rinse out my conditioner. My conditioner sets for a long time lol!!!
Caroline says
I use conditioner first and then shampoo. I read somewhere that if you do it in that order the shampoo will wash some of the conditioner out so it doesn’t add extra greasiness to your hair…and my hair can get pretty greasy! After that I wash my body, then my face, and then shave if I’m feeling ambitious!
Jodi says
This is hilarious. I HAVE to do my shower sequence in the exact.same.order. or something just seems ‘off’ about my day. I’m pretty much like you, too. I have to have something to do while my conditioner ‘sets’ (shaving, body wash).I like to wash my face last, so none of the oils from the shampoo or conditioner remain.
My fiance and I have these same sort of “deep” conversations!
Allyssa says
Fun question!
1. Shampoo
2. Rinse out shampoo
3. Conditioner
4. Wash body
5. Wash face
6. Shave
7. Rinse out conditioner
Katelyn@ Foodie Goes to School says
I do EXACTLY what you do! I always thought I may have been a little weird to let my shampoo AND condition “set”. Who knows if it actually works but HEY if julie from PBfingers does it..it’s gotta be good! 🙂
Lauren says
That’s too funny. I think guys don’t understand that the shampoo has to be the first step for us girls because it even says on the bottle to let it sit for a few minutes. I do the exact same sequence as you!
Tichina says
This post totally reminded me of the friends episode where Joey says to Chandler are talking about sharing soup and Joey says, “next time you take a shower think about the last thing I washed and the first thing you wash!”
Friends always crack me up haha 🙂

Tichina says
***episode where Joey and Chandler are talking…
apparently I was too antsey to post that I forgot to re-read it haha
Tichina says
***soap.
oh I give up.
Jaclyn says
This is too funny! I usually always follow the same sequence – although today was different for some reason ? – start with shampooing, THEN wash my face so shampoo doesn’t get in my eyes, then conditioner, THEN shave (sometimes, too!) and wash my body so that the conditioner makes my hair extraaa soft (!) and then brush it in the shower just to get out any knots, if needed, then wash it out. funny because although it is a um, really deep topic hahah, i DO follow a sequence!!
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
I soap then shave then shampoo. But when I shower with Josh I shampoo then soap because that’s the order he does and it doesn’t really matter to me. I love joint showering, it sounds weird but its not really about ‘intimate time’, it just fun, and we always have the most interesting conversations.
Marykate says
Face first
Shampoo, lather
Soap up the bod
Rinse
Condition
Shave legs
Rinse
So fresh, So clean!
Christina @ Christina Does Stuff says
So…I seriously thought everyone did it the same way I did! I don’t know why I thought there was a universal method….clearly there isn’t.
I shampoo, then conditioner which I leave in while I shave (somethings), wash body (I usually, but not always, wash my feet), then wash face. Then I rinse everything at the same time.
Jordan says
Shampoo –> condition –> wash body/shave while conditioner “sets” –> rinse. For some reason I’ve never ever thought to wash my face in the shower?? I always just wash it at the sink with Clean ‘n’ Clear. 🙂
Danielle says
Shampoo & wash out > wash face (I like to get my hair a little *dry* before adding in conditioner) > conditioner > let conditioner hang out in my hair while I wash body and shave (if it’s time to shave!) > wash out my conditioner in cold water! <— really sucks but worth it because I swear it makes my hair extra shiny! 🙂
And I'm done!
I actually really hate when I don't do it in this order! haha
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
1. shampoo
2. wash face
3. rinse out shampoo
4. condition
5. wash body
6. shave (if necessary)
7. rinse out conditioner
my husband does the same thing! 🙂
Electra @ vanillabeanlean.com says
I always shampoo & condition first so when I wash my bod the conditioner has extra silk-ifying time.
Only tip for you – I read research on making sure to rinse out the conditioner BEFORE you wash your face b/c otherwise the conditioner can clog pores & cause breakouts! Just thought I’d let you know! 🙂
Waheeda says
mine’s the same as ryan’s!
Danica @ It's Progression Not Perfection says
it’s random conversations like this that are always the most fun : ) my order: shave, shampoo, condition, bod, then face is always last
Ali says
Shampoo, condition, wash face (while conditioner is setting), rinse everything, then shave, then wash the bod. When I’m not showering and wash my face, I leave the face wash on for a couple of minutes to soak in… everyone thinks I’m weird with that one!
Nicole says
Haha, I always wonder the same thing. I shampoo first, then condition, shave and brush my teeth while that is ‘setting’ (does anyone else do this?? lol) rinse it out, wash my face, then lastly i wash my body.
Deva @ Deva by Definition says
I shampoo, condition, wash face, shave legs, wash body, rinse. I’ve been doing this forevs. My face breaks out if I wash it before I condition because of the conditioner itself, so I don’t really change it up all that much!
Brittney says
This is a fun topic! 🙂 I always wash my hair first, then shave under my arms, then wash my face, then rinse out the shampoo, then put in conditioner, shave my legs, wash my body, wash my nose (I just got it pierced 2 months ago and don’t want any chemicals from the other stuff I use to get in it while it’s healing!) then I rinse my conditioner out and am good to go! Takes me forever… like 15 minutes haha. But I love a shower!!!
J @ ... semplicemente j ... says
1. Shampoo
2. Condition
3. Shave while the conditioner sets in
4. Wash face
5. Wash Body
6. Stay in water as long as I can!!!
Abby @ Abz 'n' Oats says
My man has the same sequence as Ryan. lol.
My sequence:
1. Shampoo (like every three days-otherwise enter shower cap)!
2. Wash Face
3. Rinse Face and Shampoo
4. Conditioner
5. Wash Body
6. Shave
7. Rinse everything until I get pruney. lol. 🙂
Lauren B. says
1. Face wash and rinse
2. Shampoo and rinse
3. Conditioner and leave it in while I…
4. Wash my body and shave
5. Rinse Conditioner
6. Towel off- which I also have a very specific pattern for that I do the same way every time, otherwise it throws me off. 🙂
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
Haha this is awesome.. Mmk, I actually wash my face outside of the shower, at the sink beforehand. In the shower, I first do my body, then shave before rinsing off all the soap, then shampoo and condition my hair..
E says
Ha! Interesting topic choice 😉 Here’s what my routine looks like:
1. Shave legs (sometimes 😉 )
2. Wash face (before shampooing so I can rinse any facial soap out before the shampoo)
3. Shampoo – I don’t let it set, I just scrub my scalp really well 🙂
4. Conditioner, depending on what shampoo I used (I don’t always condition because I have my hair in a short pixie)
5. Wash/rinse my body
6. Towel dry
😀
Jessica says
Hahaha I’ve never heard of ‘setting’ the shampoo. I feel like that wouldn’t do anything… but now I’m curious so I may have to experiment. I let my conditioner soak into my hair so it becomes silky soft unless I’m in a super rush.
dee says
Thought I would share this comic with you! I thought of it as I read this post. I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Natalie Dee, but her work is SO FUNNY! This one is titled “Do you want conditioner water flowing over your clean face like some animal.”

Lauren @ Sassy Molassy says
It’s funny to think about this. I do: body wash first (to let the hair get nice and wet), then shampoo (let sit), face wash, rinse it all, condition, rinse, done.
Heather says
Haha, I love this! Your blog topics of discussion are so fun, Julie. 🙂
My shower sequence looks like this:
1.) Face
2.) Shampoo
3.) Wash top 1/2 of body
4.) Un-shampoo
5.) Condition
6.) Wash bottom 1/2 of body
7.) Un-condition
Shelly says
Shampoo hair, rinse, condition hair, wash face (washes letfover conditioner off face), rinse hair and face, wash body, shave, final rinse. 🙂
Betsy says
that’s crazy, julie, your shower sequence is IDENTICAL to mine!!
Kyria says
Mine is identical to yours. Complete with “setting”.
Amber K says
While I don’t let my shampoo “set” I do allow my conditioner time to set in. I actually never even really thought about it. You two do have some deep discussions 🙂
Mac says
1. shampoo
2. shave armpits and leg #1 (while shampoo sets)
3. rinse shampoo & apply conditioner
4. shave leg #2
5. wash face
6. pumice stone my feet (sometimes)
7. rinse conditioner out
All in less than 10 minutes 🙂
Alaina says
Before meeting David:
Body, shave, face, then hair
After being with him:
Hair, face, body, shave
I work my way down now, not up. 😛 It makes so much sense!
Britt @ My. Daily. Randomness. says
We have pretty much the same shower routine! I like to let things “set” as well… sometimes, if I am extra sweaty, I throw in an extra shampoo after rinsing the first one out. lol
Rebecca says
Yes! Haha, mine goes like shampoo, let that “set” while I wash my upper body. Then I rinse, apply conditioner and let that “set” while I wash the lower body & shave and then rinse everything off before lastly washing my face. Sometimes the order changes a LITTLE but that’s the basic routine!
Elizabeth R. says
Isn’t it funny how everyone has their specific routine?!
1. shampoo
2. wash body while shampoo is in
3. rinse shampoo, put in conditioner
4. shave, if needed
5. wash face
Haley says
I’ve heard you shouldn’t wash your body until after you shampoo and conditioner because it leaves a film on your body (and face)…don’t know if its true but it’s caused me to wash/conditioner before anything else…
Gen says
Hey that’s an interesting question!
Well mine looks like that:
– Wash body
– Shampoo
– Rince everything
– Wash face
Funny post ^^
