Is it just me or are there certain members of your family you always seem to associate with a specific recipe or dish? When I think of my grandma (Mimi) I think of her sugar cookies. When I think of Ryan’s grandma (Bubbee), I think of glazed carrots and biscuits and gravy. When I think of my mother-in-law, I think of pineapple soufflé. When I think of my mom, I think of monkey bread, cheesepuff casserole and the best homemade stuffing in all the land.
When I think of my Aunt Laurie, I think of this simple shrimp dip! It is made with cream cheese making it deliciously creamy.
My Aunt Laurie’s simple shrimp dip is a recipe she’s been making for as long as I can remember after her best friend Rhonda introduced it to her years ago. It was such a hit within our family that the dip began surfacing at every family party. Now it’s a staple family recipe I know I can look forward to anytime my mother’s side of the family gets together.
Aside from the sheer ease of assembling this recipe, the thing I love most about this shrimp dip is the fact that you can make it ahead of time. To be honest, I’d actually encourage you to make it ahead of time, as I think it tastes even better the next day. I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m preparing for a party, I’m all about checking things off my to-do list the day before chaos ensues. This dip can be one of those things!
An added bonus? The only chopping you’ll have to do to make this recipe is chopping up three tablespoons of onion. Aside from using a little muscle to stir through thick cream cheese, that’s all the real legwork you’ll need to do to assemble this dip. I didn’t title this recipe Simple Shrimp Dip for nothin’!

Question of the Day
What is your all-time favorite dip?
I know it’s not all that creative, but it’s hard to top guacamole for me! I also love seven-layer dip. That stuff if seriously addicting!
that’s crazy easy and looks delicious! different than traditional cheese dip – i like!
I don’t think I’ve ever had shrimp dip, but this looks tasty and so easy, thanks for the recipe! Guacamole is my favorite, both to make and to eat for sure. I also love good salsa though…I guess anything involving tortilla chips 🙂
If you like salsa + guacamole you must make this: Ryan makes the EASIEST dip ever by combining a few avocados with a jar of salsa. It’s SO easy but SO ridiculously good! It’s the perfect combination if you love salsa and guacamole and want the best of both worlds. One warning: It never looks very appetizing but it always tastes great!
Ahhh that sounds amazing, thank you!!
Looks amazing! Admittedly I am not a big cream cheese person but I imagine subbing full fat Greek yogurt may work?
I’m not sure! It’s worth a shot! The cream cheese is VERY thick so the yogurt might result in a runnier dip, but I think the flavor would still be delicious. Please let me know if you give it a try with the yogurt substitution! 🙂
It’s a tough call between taco dip & rye boat dip! I can’t look at the serving size for either, because both are suggested to be only 2 tbsp. Who only eats 2 tbsp!? So delicious!!
Haha seriously! That’s blasphemy! 🙂
What if I can’t find the pimento cheese? This dip was a real hit at New Years what else could I use?
Make your own. It’s very easy. Grate some cheese. I like to mix 8 ounces of cheddar & 8 ounces of pepper Jack, dump in a small jar of pimentos. Add some Mayo & Mexican Crema or lite sour cream. We like it with a little cayenne. Be careful with the cayenne, though, because it will “bloom” overnight & may be too much heat for some. Easy peasy.
This sounds delicious. And so southern with the pimento cheese – win!
A total dip theme today! Kath posted one too! my all time favorite is something involving lots of cheese… probably hot queso dip ahhh!
Every year we have a huge friends get away weekend. Each couple brings an appetizer and this will make an appearance this year. What a perfect dip for the summer!
This looks delicious! I am actually in charge of bringing an appetizer for Easter, and this just might be it. My all time favorite dip is bruschetta!
This sounds so good and such a yummy party appetizer. And so true about associating foods with family members, I’m trying to think of all mine now. lol
I’m all about dip, but I can’t say I’ve had shrimp dip before. Obviously, I’ll have to try this one out soon to check it off the list!
Some of my my favorite dips are taco dip, guacamole, and sour cream mixed with a Hidden Valley ranch seasoning packet. So, so good and dangerously addicting!
This looks delicious! I haven’t had a summery shrimp ANYTHING in waaaaay too long!
I think I could live off dips!! I’ll definitely be adding this one to my list. A few favorites would be buffalo chicken dip (#1 by far!), any queso from a Mexican restaurant, and 7 layer dip…(I could go on an on…haha!)
Dip looks great! I’m going to try and make for Easter! Silly question about the dip. I’ve never used pimento cheese. Where do you find that? Regular supermarket or at a cheese shop?
Regular supermarket! It’s usually by the cream cheese or other spreadable cheeses.
Are you sure you didn’t grow up in the South instead if IL? This sounds so good! Shrimp, good! Cream cheese, good! Pimento cheese, now we’re talking! Can’t wait to try it!
Haha!!
Thank you for sharing this southern delight! We had a lake house that was around the corner from a restaraunt that made fabulous shrimp dip. We no longer live in that state and I miss their shrimp dip. You are bringing back sweet memories and inspiring me to make this recipe today.
Aw I am so glad to hear this!! Hope you enjoy the dip if you have the chance to make it!! <3
It looks delicious, thanks for introducing!
Yum! This looks really good! My mom would have loved this recipe (she was a big fan of cold shrimp.) Kind of excited to see that it contains pimento cheese, one of my bffs favorite things in the world is pimento cheese. Thanks for another great recipe!
Oh also, I want to add that YES, I agree with you, I associate recipes with specific people, even if other people eventually make that recipe too. I associate a million recipes with my mom, so that’s a given, but those dill pickles wrapped in cream cheese and meat? I associate those with one of my aunts. The first time she brought them to a Thanksgiving we were kids, and were like, “ewwwwww, yuck!” But then I ate one and there was no turning back! Love them! I’ve made your Mimi’s sugar cookies once, and even *I* associate them with your Mimi (because I never had them – at least that size – before.)
Catching up on your blog today – oh my god this sounds fantastic! I will be making this for our next party!
Two of my very favorite things! Easy AND delicious! Love it!
This looks delish! The only problem…I can’t have onions. Ugh! Has anyone ever tried this without onions? Or maybe dried chopped onion?
Made this dip yesterday for family BBQ , so delicious! You’re right, I halved the recipe and still made a ton! Happy I’ll have some today! This is now one of my favs, also love the “knorr” spinach dip, and a ham, cream cheese, green onion that my mom makes! Have a great 4th! Thanks for your awesome blog! Love how your postitive attitude and bright spirit come thru in your posts!
So growing up in Canada I have no idea what pimento cheese is. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it in any grocery store around here. Is it like a cream cheese with pimentos? Or is it more like the spreadable cheddar? Would you know of a suitable substitute? I love shrimp and would like to try this out. ?
I actually had no idea what pimento cheese was either- but low and behold I found it in my grocery store- it’s more of a dip- I found it in the cheese section but closer to hummus if that helps? It comes in a tub- it looks like shredded cheddar cheese mixed in with a spread and pimentos. They also have it on Amazon Freah!!
Look on Pinterest for pimento cheese, if you haven’t already done so. Easy to make. Look for one with a mayo binder, cheddar, grated onion, woraheshire sauce, cayenne. Made it for my kids and they loved it. We lived in the South for 25 years. Also Whole Foods carries it.
I’ve been dying to make this dip since you posted it and finally had a picnic to go to so I decided to give it a shot! Happy to report that it was definitely a hit!! I did chop up the shrimp though. I’m not sure if your shrimp were just much smaller than mine, but I couldn’t see how leaving them whole in the dip would have worked
I made this and have a ton left over. Do you know if it can be frozen?
Can you use cream cheese instead of pimento cheese?
My family makes a similar one except we use cocktail sauce instead of horseradish. Funny how there’s so many similar things that people make up!
I love this recipe! My grandmother used to make shrimp dip on every holiday and it makes me feel nostalgic to make it for my family now. I love your workouts too!!
Aw so glad you love it so much! It’s definitely a favorite on our house!
I will save this recipe and make it soon.Eileen
The recipe calls for 1 1/3 cups pimento cheese. Is that 1&1/3?
The recipe calls for 1 1/3 cups of pimento cheese. Is it 1&1/3?
yes!
Where do you get pimento cheese? I live in Canada but live close to a border town in the US, which grocery store carries this cheese?
Do you make the pimento cheese or use bought? If bought, which brand? Thanks, looks delicious can’t wait to try!
that’s crazy easy and looks delicious!
I just made this for a get together we’re having this afternoon to go with our boiled shrimp and char grilled oysters! I followed the recipe exactly and it is just what I was looking for! Delicious and super easy….. it’s a keeper! Thank you!!
So glad you liked it!!
Make it WITHOUT the pimento cheese – it changes the flavor. Shrimp is expensive, go for the recipe with the cream cheese omitting the pimento, taste the real shrimp. Yum!!
finally made this … it is hot as heck today and this is the perfect thing to have instead of dinner :=)
Had to make my own pimento cheese though…..#canada
