The highlight of my day today was an early afternoon massage.
I purchased a Groupon a while back for a deep tissue massage and noticed it was about to expire earlier this week, so I scheduled an 11 a.m. massage for today. (Please tell me I’m not the only one who waits until the last minute to use their Groupons.)
I have a new idea for you business owners out there: Periodically schedule massages for your employees. I was crazy-productive this morning knowing that I had an awesome “reward” waiting for me. Anyone want to come work at la casa de PBF in exchange for a biweekly massage? My intern isn’t really pullin’ her weight and I’m in the market for a replacement.
Slacker.
Today’s massage was just lovely and rather unique for me in that it was the first silent massage I’ve had in my life. Usually the masseuse and I chat it up, but today’s massage was very quiet.
The lack of conversation gave me ample time to relax and think… which naturally meant weird thoughts crept into my mind, such as the following:
- Thank goodness there isn’t a video camera underneath this little head hole pillow thing. This open-mouth look is fox-aaay.
- I really wish there was an un-creepy way for me to ask the masseuse to massage my hips.
- Must. Not. Drool.
- If I were a masseuse I’d love to randomly throw in “The Thong Song” in between the instrumental music just to see if I’d get a reaction.
Lunch
After my massage, I headed home and made myself a smoothie for lunch. The masseuse told me to drink lots of water, so I figured I’d be an overachiever and drink my lunch, too. Extra credit!
The smoothie was great and very filling. I had a hard time finishing it!
Into the blender went:
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup strawberries
- 1/2 cup vanilla Greek yogurt
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 spoonful dark chocolate cocoa powder
- 1 large spoonful peanut butter
- Enough milk to get everything moving
- 1 packet instant decaf coffee
- 2 large handfuls spinach
Off to get more work done before a conference call this afternoon!

Wow, I’m surprised that you’ve had conversations during your massages in the past. I’ve always had quiet and peaceful, where the masseuse actually encouraged me to just be alone with my thoughts. They’re such a treat, this post reminded me I really could go for one soon 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I laughed out loud at that “Thong Song” bit!!! I think some people would be really amused and then others not so much, lol.

I always feel a little awkward with massages! I never know if I should talk or not talk, or how to ask for work on certain body parts (I have some tight pyriformis muscles and asking someone to rub your butt kind of sounds awkward).
I’m also horrible at using my Groupons…I usually wait until right before they expire! However, I have one for 10 yoga sessions that expires next month and I’m trying to get them all in around a crazy work schedule…at least I didn’t wait until 10 days before.

That thong thong da thong thong thong!
That’s all. 🙂

My husband is an ex-massage therapist so I read him your weird thoughts and he laughed. He thought adding the Thong Song would be great addition to the playlist 🙂

That smoothie looks DELISH! and I must admit-your massage is making me a tad jealous!
MegS says
I have actually never had a professional massage before! I have always wondered if they have ever made you feel awkward?

I love massages — it is good for you when you spend so much time at the computer. My shoulders always end up by my ears…
I have been a lurker here for more than a year, but I just wanted to tell you how encouraging and motivating your blog is! I have eaten so much healthier (and discovered the wonder of adding spinach to my smoothies!!) and am always inspired by your eats and workouts.
I was never an athlete, but I have been more focused on fitness the past year (and have even tried to run lately.) Your honesty about not being a “natural” runner but still getting out there and doing it has really helped me get out there and just do it. 🙂

I’m a massage therapist & I love your idea of putting the thong song on! I’m going to try it on a client that I know would laugh about it! Also, don’t be afraid to speak up if you want something worked on! You’re paying for that great massage, get what you want done 🙂

Hi Julie – you know they have canine massage right???? I used to be a LMT too and don’t ever feel weird about asking! Informed consent goes both ways….& almost everyone drools and like someone else said drool
is a complement! If you want an extra drool worthy massage
try hot stone massage or you could try Thai massage for your hips, its kind of like assisted yoga stretching…
& for Katherine…if you are ticklish they are using too light a touch. Ask for firmer pressure. Its ok we want you to be comfortable and relaxed not jumpy & ticklish….remember the drool?
Kelly says
YUM!! I love that smoothie….it sounds so refreshing!

Love a hot stone massage; the best. Finished the “Wild” last night; loved it.

I get regular deep-tissue massages, and I am totally cracking up thinking about the Thong Song coming on. I’m going to share that with my massage therapist – it will make her laugh too!
Alison says
HAHA I cracked up when I saw your during-massage thoughts! That looks like a great smoothie too!
Joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I’ve never gotten a massage, but I want one! And I’m pretty confident I’d end up saying something awkward. 😉
Chelsie says
I had a VERY trying and tiring day – thank you for making me laugh!! 🙂 It made me feel a trillion times better.

I am officially inspired to book a massage next time it pops up on Groupon. I haven’t had a massage in forever! And I’m so glad I’m not the only one who has very random thoughts during my massages! I always say the massage therapist is massaging the random thoughts out of my nooks and crannies! LOL!
Kim @ The Family Practice says
Ha! The thong song! I love when the massuese is silent (for the most part) and I really hate when they talk the whol way through. I got a massage just before our wedding and the lady was like “oh nice ring, getting married soon?” and then went on and on about her awful divorce and how the only reason she became a massage therapist was because he left her and she had nothing to fall back on. Ummm.. wow. That is the opposite of relaxing.
Bek @ Crave says
I really need to start getting sport massages- my body is basically begging me for one. But as a student you can only afford so much right? And I much prefer some cute gym clothes anyways hehe. But I guess I could take advantage of all those daily scoopon deals! One of these days!
Lauren @ Part Time House Wife says
Too funny! I can’t be bothered with conversation during a massage and every time I’m Layin in the face down position my nose starts dripping at an awkward rate. Then I turn over feeling like my fave is covered in snot. And how do you wipe it as your turning under a sheet held by the masseuse? Lol.
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
I get massages monthly. Next time tell them what you want! Seriously, I always tell them what I am feeling and then communicate during. More pressure, less pressure. My hips always get a good work-over and it really helps my hip bursitis. My legs, hips and yes, rear end, always need a lot of work.
Lindsay @ LindsayInNYC says
That’s funny, every single massage I’ve ever had has been quiet! I’ve never talked during mine.
