Hello from the skies!
I am several hours into my flight and should really be sleeping like everyone around me but I can’t, so I decided to flip open my laptop and chat with you fine people! (This post will be published once I have access to internet again.)
I am currently flying Virgin Atlantic and I must say I’m pretty darn impressed! (Ryan actually found a non-stop flight for me on Virgin Atlantic that was quite a bit cheaper than the other flights I was finding that had a billion layovers. Super score!) I’ve never flown Virgin Atlantic before, but so far I am a fan.
They gave us presents!
We got a “Feel Good Kit” that included a spiffy eye mask (my favorite part), a tooth brush, tiny toothpaste, earplugs and socks. And that was just for those of us hanging out in economy. First class got foot massages! Totally kidding. Did I get anyone?
Once we were airborne, I played with the touch-screen television in front of me and was psyched to see a ton of movies. I was even more excited when I saw that they had Silver Linings Playbook!
I am totally on the I love Jennifer Lawrence train that everyone else seems to be on these days and really wanted to see this movie when it first came out but never got around to it. I watched the whole movie and really, really liked it. Now I want to read the book!
About halfway through movie time, dinner was served.
I actually got a gluten-free dinner by mistake and though I was confused at first, since I already opened it, I said I would eat it anyway and was really happy with the meal. It looked better than the other dinner options and seemed to be pretty darn healthy for airplane food.
Now that I have a full stomach, I am hoping my sleepiness will kick in soon. In the meantime, I’m going to put on my eye mask and listen to a little Elton John.
I grew up listening to Elton John (“Your Song” is actually my parents’ song) and listening to his music always takes me back to childhood and makes me smile.
Hoping to drift off to sleep soon!
Question of the Day
- What’s the coolest or best thing/feature/meal/snack you’ve ever seen offered on a flight?
Laura @ RunningJunkie says
Fancy! I’ve only ever been giving those little cookie/biscuits and soda/water. I’ve never flown too far though!
How long is your flight?
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
I’m easy to please: LOVE the biscoff cookies they used to distribute on flights, back in the day. 🙂
Lisa says
The still do on Delta!! I ask for two 🙂

I flew with Southwest last Christmas and it was such a joy! The crew was decked out in Christmas gear and sang turned their pre-flight safety instructions into a jingle. At the end of the flight they offered trivia to the whole plane- a kid and adult level. I won the adult level after a few people guessed before me and were wrong. The questions was, “What is the only mammal that doesn’t have knees?” The answer- an elephant. I left he plane with a huge smile and have flown Southwest ever since. Glad you had a good experience and hope you have fun on your trip!
Fizz @ fizzsbizz says
Oh man I love international flights!! The movies, the food, the people watching… Best!
Have a blast!!!!!!
Katie H. says
Dang, I can tell I’ve been out of the blogging world–I don’t even know where you’re going! But it sounds like a pretty sweet way to get there 🙂 Good luck getting some shut-eye. I’m off to read about what you’ve been up to!
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
This makes me so happy to see a gluten free dinner option! I seriously hate flying and can never sleep on the plane.
Jill @ a Girl in Progress says
They always seem to be nicer to you on longer flights! I love being able to watch movies in the little TV mounted on the chair in front of you. Watching a couple of movies back to the US from Rome was about the only way I was able to endure that long flight. And you don’t have to pay extra for it on those international flights – score! Hope you have fun – I’m sure it will be a blast.
ClevelandJoe @ The Frolicking Fells says
I’ve got a tie.
One of the best things I ever received was a showing of Casino Royale on the way out to Las Vegas. This was right when Texas Hold ‘Em was becoming popular. Watching the movie taught me how to play the game and got me pumped up for a great time in Vegas.
The other best thing I ever received came at the Continental Airlines President’s Club right before we flew back from Hawaii. My dad wasn’t big on me drinking coffee when I was younger and I spent a week in Hawaii without drinking one cup of coffee. I suffered from major caffeine deprivation that week! However, I grabbed a cup of fresh brewed Kona coffee while we were waiting for our flight. I’ll never forget how great that cup tasted, and I’ll also never forget how that cup and a few subsequent cups kept me up for something like 40 hours!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
I flew virgini atlantic to london and it was amazing! I seriously thought they had the best airplane food ever!
Katie says
International flights are the best! I love all of the movie, TV, and music options! 🙂 Hope you have a great trip!
Courtney says
I flew Virgin Atlantic to/from England a few years ago and it was the best flying experience I’ve EVER had. On the return trip, they gave us full-size Cadbury chocolate bars as an extra snack!
Cori @ olivetorun says
You guys are going to have a blast!
The best in flight food has been warm chocolate chip cookies.
Elizabeth @ myneonrunningshoes says
International flights look so much better than normal flights! I hope you were able to sleep some!
Shannon says
Unlimited wine on a Turkish Airlines flight from NYC to Istanbul. 🙂 The Turkish food was {surprisingly} top notch, too. Hope you have a wonderful trip!
Lisa says
I don’t think I’ve ever had a really good food feature on a flight, but I’m also terrified of flying, plus a little OCD thing I have which means I can’t eat on flights, and hope no one next to me eats either. Haha, it’s odd. So long flights for me = bad times. Since my anxiety increases when I don’t eat too. I sound like a peach.
Have a safe flight and a ton of fun!
Jess says
While I have no input on good airplane food (I’ve yet to find any!), I DO have input on “Silver Linings Playbook!” I, too, am a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan and absolutely loved her and Bradley Cooper in the movie. I just finished reading the book last night and highly recommend it. There are definitely differences between the book and the movie, but the book is told from Pat’s perspective so you really get to know what he is thinking and feeling. I’m a mental health therapist, so naturally this was exciting for me! Hope you get around to reading it soon and enjoy your trip!!
Laura says
Unfortunately, every good thing I’ve ever received on a flight has been on a really short flight, so I couldn’t enjoy too much of it! But I once got bumped up to first class. I have no idea HOW, but I’ve never flown first class before then or since, but it was pretty swanky and I felt awesome. Also, one of my airplanes had DirectTv, so I could catch up on all my shows! Made the flight go by so fast.
Anne @strawberryjampackedlife says
When we flew to London last summer, we went through Dublin on Aer Lingus. The food was much better than I expected, and the flight went very smoothly. I think the fact that it was an international company made the experience much better than others. I can’t even remember why I thought that, but I did. I’m jealous that you got to see Silver Linings Playbook! It’s on my last to get once it comes out.
Michelle says
I was working in Greece one summer and on the flight back to Gatwick Airport they gave us fresh blueberry scones, then a giant Twix bar and a little single serving icecream cup! (What?!) That was by far the best….
Absolutely worst = a flight to China where I got a bun and a century egg (preserved…it’s black. Not. Good). It was 15 hours, no lights on in the plane and no movies or anything!
Elle Noel says
WOW they are doing a great job keeping you comfortable! I’m so looking forward to reading about your European experiences. My husband and I are int he process of planning or first trip. I know you’ll send some excellent reviews!
Katie says
Your own personal TV? That would be amazing on a long flight. The best food I’ve gotten on a flight was probably oreos? Haha I haven’t been on a lot of flights with snacks or…not fancy snacks at least.
Ashley says
I flew British Air to/from Europe when I studied abroad. On the flight from London to Chicago, the flight attendants offered us mini bottles of wine…free of charge 🙂 I also just finished reading “Silver Linings Playbook” and have yet to see the movie. The book was fantastic!
Finally, I have to say that I love BodyPump, too!!! I know this isn’t at all related to this post, but it’s my favorite class to take at my gym. I’ve been taking it for almost 8 years now and it never gets old!!!
Enjoy your trip! If you’re planning to spend anytime in London, you could always take the Chunnel to Paris for the day… 🙂
Lindsay says
Southwest always has the best snacks. I try to fly them whenever I can! Have a great trip!!
Sonja @ The {Happy} Travel Bug says
I can’t believe you get all that in economy! Impressive! I got to sit in first class once and loved every second of it. The perks, the seat, the food, the service…EVERYTHING! That would be my favorite thing. Have a great trip!
Krystina says
My fiance and I flew to Italy last summer on Condor and Lufthansa. They serve you a complimentary cocktail and the food was surprisingly delicious! A lot better than I have ever had an any American flights.
Lauren B. says
I got warm chocolate chips cookies and ice cream one time on a flight! I was one happy girl!
Angela says
Wow! That’s amazing! Such a cute face mask. I love that. Out of country flights are so much better than normal ones it seems like, so much stuff included that you would have to pay for normally.
Kelsie says
so jealous! http://www.runningathousandmiles.com/2013/03/pittsburgh-half-marathon.html
Parita @ myinnershakti says
Deep dish pizz. I think it was when my mom and I were flying from somewhere in Europe to Chicago. I was one happy flyer!
Elisabeth says
Wow! I need to try Virgin next time I fly!
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
I definitely share your girl crush on Jennifer Lawrence. Love her! And I really enjoyed Silver Linings Playbook as well, though it was a little bit different from the book.
I don’t actually remember ever getting overly lucky with things when it comes to flying, but I have a definite weak spot for the Biscoff cookies that they give out and sometimes the stewardesses give me extras 😀
Victoria @ Reluctantly Skinny says
The first time I ever had shrimp was actually on a Virgin Atlantic flight to London when I was 10. Have a great time on your trip – can’t wait to read all about it!

When I was younger I remember flying an airline (I think Midwest???) and they served warm chocolate chip cookies!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
I really want to see Silver Linings Playbook it looks really good.
Best thing I’ve had has been a mini tub of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream as a snack.
Holly says
Virgin Atlantic is hands down the best airline for Transcontinental flights…and I’ve done my fair share to be able to compare (20+ in my lifetime) . When we flew with them as kids ,they used to hand out the BEST kiddie bags, we’d be entertained for hours.
Hope you have a blast in my home Country (& Ireland)
Amanda says
I flew AirIndia after my study abroad session in Italy. After a layover from Italy to Germany, we flew from Germany to the US on AirIndia…and they served Indian food of course. I like to have Indian food every once in a while. But with a huge airplane full of people who were not used to eating that type of cuisine (especially through turbulence), it ended with many people getting sick. What a smelly 7 hour flight that was. Glad you’re having a much better experience 🙂 Have a fun trip!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
Once when I was flying from Belgium to Spain I got ice cream. By far the best airplane food I’ve ever had.
Michelle@Peachy Palate says
Hope you’ve arrived safe and sound!
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
We got to travel business class on the way home from our Europe trip this past summer, and it was AMAZING. We got to choose an appetizer, entree, and dessert from a menu. I had an ice cream sundae that was prepared right in front of me! And they served warm chocolate chip cookies. And warm nuts. And mimosas. It was pretty awesome. Too bad we can’t afford to fly like that all of the time! 😉
Jodea @ chillichocolatelove says
That meal looks good and I totally want to see that film!
Ice cream on a plane is always a winner for me.
Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
You’re a super Blogger, woman! Looks like a really nice flight. I’ve always been skeptical of European travel because of, well, the actual travel to get there.
I’m on a trip this weekend too and was considering blogging via my Android. I might try it now! Have an awesome trip 🙂
L. Williams says
Virgin is the best airline hands down.
Danielle @ It's A Harleyyy Life says
that touch screen is awesome. I’ve been wanting to see silver linings playbook. I can’t wait until it comes out on dvd! Have a fun trip!
Caroline @ Capture the Cadence says
That meal looks darn healthy and delicious for an airplane flight! Way to go, Virgin Atlantic!
ashley says
International flights always have the cool stuff! Have fun in Ireland have I mentioned that I’m insanely jealous???
Jen @ Jens Best Life says
I love Virgin Atlantic! I flew them to London when I did research there after my freshman year of undergrad and it was the nicest flight I’ve ever been on. And on the way back, they gave us so much tea! I love tea so I was very, very happy.
Emily @ Maple Miles says
You absolutely should read Silver Linings Playbook!!! I haven’t seen the movie (yet!), but the book is so good and hilarious! 🙂
becca says
I love Elton John as well and grew up listening to him 🙂 Silver Linings Playbook was a great movie!
Andrea D. says
So glad your trip is off to a great start! That dinner does look surprisingly delicious and healthy for an airline meal! One of the coolest features on a plane I recieved was on the way to the Florida Keys…the plane had a touch screen like the one you are on now, so I could pick and choose what I wanted to listen to and watch. It also had an interactive map that showed the progress the plane was making as we traveled, which I really enjoyed because I knew how much longer the flight was. Have a great trip!
