When the alarm went off at 5:20 a.m., Ryan and I woke up to beautiful snowflakes falling from the sky! The snow continued as I drove to the gym and by the time I was done teaching Spinning, it was still snowing outside and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon.
Since I missed the first snowfall of the year in Charlotte when I was out of town last week, I’m feeling quite giddy about the snow today! Most of the people who took my 6 a.m. Spinning class said they were “over winter” and more than ready for summer, but I couldn’t help but feel happy I didn’t miss all of the snowfall from our first winter in North Carolina. I think I must still be a little too excited to live in a state with seasons again!
After Spinning, I drove back home, ate a small bag of Bare coconut chips, took a hot shower and then headed into the kitchen to make breakfast.
(If you’re a serious coconut lover like me, I think you would love those coconut chips. They’re so, so good and perfectly crunchy! I find them at Whole Foods and Target.)
Breakfast this morning looked a lot like yesterday’s morning meal. Another egg white and oatmeal protein pancake, served with a side of roasted almonds and a hot mug of Celestial Seasonings red velvet rooibos tea.
Now it’s time for me to get ready for the day. I have a morning appointment to go to before driving back to the gym to work again (teaching is done for the day though!) and then Girls On The Run is back in full swing this afternoon!
Hope you have a fantastic Tuesday, my friends!

I must agree with some of your spinners–I am ‘over winter’ as well. The last snow we had was accompanied by some wonderful ice so everything still has a layer of ice over the snow which is making it hard for the snow to melt! Plus I’m afraid to take the dogs out for a walk or run around the neighborhood because of all the chemicals they put on the roads and sidewalks… 🙁
Julie @ Running in a Skirt says
Stay warm today and be careful on the roads! I’m in Asheville and our roads are terrible this morning. I’m hanging tight at home until it passes.
Have fun at GOTR!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
So glad you got to enjoy some snow! I’m fine with snow as long as it’s warm enough to enjoy it (25 -33 degrees) but when it’s zero and I can’t go snowshoeing due to potential frostbite, then I’m “over it.” But I don’t complain about it because I live in a place where winter is winter even halfway into spring and if I didn’t like it, I can move. Watching snow fall is the most relaxing thing ever.
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
While I definitely appreciated the seasons when I lived in Utah, I did NOT appreciate winter in February and March. 😉 I was over it by that time and was wishing for sunshine and warmer temps. I’m glad you’re enjoying the snowy day though!! Sounds like you’re where you belong. 🙂
Nikki says
Julie, I agree with you, I loved seeing the snow this morning!! I hope you’re enjoying NC so far! It’s a great place to live!
PamelaC says
How is the red velvet rooibos tea? I am not a tea drinker, but I do love red velvet! Silly question, but do you think someone who doesn’t love tea would like it?
Julie says
I like it a lot!! I do think you would probably have to be a tea lover to like it though. 🙂
keen peach says
We have snow here in Georgia too!
Every time I see your breakfast it makes me want to go eat breakfast again. 🙂
Skigirl0891 says
I always love winter but this year it’s just cold, gray, and 5 degrees every day, ewwww! I want some sunshine & snow in Chicago 😉
Skinny Fitalicious says
It dropped 20 degrees in Phoenix last weekend. It was 80s now it’s high 60s. I had to bust out a sweater. 🙂
Ashley @ sweet carolina belle says
Drive safe. The roads are a wreck in Raleigh. I missed the wintery weather last week as well. So I was happy to see the snow fall when I woke up this morning. I am hoping it melts soon though. I hate missing so much work!
Brittany @ Lemon Lime Life says
I love the seasons but I’m so over winter. It’s been in the below zero range for too many days lately and I’m ready for some sunshine and greenery! Cannot wait to try those coconut chips! I foresee a Target run today! 🙂
Nora @ 2 Generations Running says
I’m definitely over winter in the northeast, but 5-6 feet of snow will do that to ya. 🙂 I love coconut chips, I usually get them at Trader Joe’s!
Kim says
I am WAY over winter too, especially since we just got a big ice storm! But if it’s going to be cold, I’d want it to snow. So pretty!

I’m in Boston, smack in the middle of what feels like the tundra this winter. But, I don’t let it get me down since I know summer will be here before we know it! 🙂
I love coconut chips. Sometimes I’m cheap and refuse to buy them since I can make them at home just by toasting sweetned coconut chips for half the price!
CAussie @ Findley Fit says
I’m jealous of the snow!! I live in Morgan Hill, Ca (Bay Area) and we never get snow. It’s funny, on my way to work it was 37 degrees and I was absolutely freezing!! Not use to that haha
Are you interested in doing day in the life posts? I am an aspiring blog writer and fitness professional and I would love to see how you schedule out your days, or provide tips for balancing everything.
Hope you have a great day!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
Enjoy the snow! I’m not looking forward to the 5 inches we’re supposed to get tomorrow! 🙁
Samantha says
When it’s been in the negatives day in and day out with no warmth in sight, being ‘over winter’ is more than understandable. That’s what it’s been like here, in Michigan. Last night our furnace went out so it’s only 54 degrees in our house as we wait for companies to come this afternoon for price estimates on a new one. Because of it being so chilly inside, I’ve popped in a Leslie Sansone Walk Away The Pounds DVD and I’ve already accomplished 3 miles. I plan on doing a “HIIT’ DVD after work today to continue staying warm.
Katy says
No coffee/caffeine girl?! uh ohhhh. 😉
kate says
I noticed that too 🙂
Carrie says
Its chilly in LA today! No snow though… like, ever, haha!
Melissa Kolbeck says
It doesn’t snow in SoCal, but where we are (about 30 miles from the coast, in a valley), it randomly snowed on New Year’s Eve! While I will always love my warm winters and ability to go to the beach any day of the year, it was so cool to have snow for a few days. And snow on palm trees? Craziest thing ever!
Kelly @ The Fit Skool says
I love Bare Chips! The apple ones are delicious. I haven’t tried coconut though so those will be next on my list 😉
Angela @ HonestlyAngela says
U am so over winter, but we have had snow since October. I can’t complain too much though. It has been really mild compared to most years!
Ashley says
The snow looks so beautiful! I’m with you—it’s fun to see the pretty white flakes every once in a while! Quite a treat!
I grew up on the Outer Banks (you and Ryan should check it out this summer if you’ve never been), and they got snow also this week which is so weird! Stay warm!
Kaci @ Running the Next Step says
I’m just curious because I’m working on my PT-certification. What sorts of things do you do when you’re working at the gym but not training clients or teaching?
Julie says
It’s not that glamorous! 🙂 I help around the gym (answer questions & am just generally available if anyone needs anything on the floor), talk to prospective members, help put together the group ex schedule, grab towels if they’re needed, etc.
Suzy says
Hi Julie! I’m Suzy. 🙂 We haven’t had one single snowfall up here yet (I live in BC, in Canada) where we usually have at least a couple of good snow days. We’re already into Spring weather, with our flowers all blooming already. I thought I’d be happy without the snow but now that I know it’s not going to happen, I kinda miss it.
ann says
Hmmmm….I have a feelin’ someone is preggers!!!
sam @ grapefruit & granola says
I wasn’t expecting the snow so early this morning… pretty, but not ideal for a lengthy commute 🙂
courtney bentley says
The snow looks so dreamy to me because I live in the tropics and it’s getting SO hot it is unbearable to go outdoors! Thank you for sharing Xo C
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I LOVE snow!!! It’s the only redeeming quality of winter 🙂
Annette Perkins (@FitnessPerks) says
I think snow is so fun & pretty, and I’m a little sad here in UT we’ve hardly had any. I know that sounds crazy, but I do like the seasons and we’ve skipped basically to spring with some cold rain. I’d much rather have snow than rain when it’s cold!
Mmmm herbal tea has been something I’ve been loving lately too!
Emily Butler says
I’m so over winter also!! But I’m in PA, I’m sure it wouldn’t be so bad if I was in Charlotte, I’m ready to move!!
Nona @ RunningHigh says
It snowed yesterday and it’s in the forecast for all of next week. The past three weeks we had seriously lovely weather, high in the 60s and sunny, so I’m pretty bummed winter showed back up. Definitely ready for spring!
Amy says
Hi Julie!
We started our season of Girls on the Run Chicago yesterday and it was a blast! One of the assistant coaches mentioned she learned about GOTR from a blog she reads and I immediately knew she was talking about you. Way to go!
Julie says
aw!! this makes me so happy! hope you both love coaching! 🙂
Taca @ A Side Of Dessert says
I have to agree as well, I’m totally over winter. How do you get your pancakes so perfect?! You make me crave a second breakfast each morning 🙂
Julie says
I cook them over medium heat! I think that’s the key… I used to crank up the heat to high and they always turned out awful!
Ashley @ A Lady Goes West says
I’ve never lived in an area that gets snow. Maybe one day!
Stacy @ Sweating Tulipz says
Glad you got to see the snowfall. I am so over winter, but we have had much more than 2 snowfalls here ;-)! Bring it on Spring!
Courtney! @ Redefining Athlete says
Yeah, I’m definitely over snow too… but it has forced me to get a little more creative with my workouts. Finally trying a spin class today! I’m training for a cycling race and I’m so tired of riding in my basement. Time to branch out!
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
I think I’m over winter, too! But I can picture that in exactly 6 months I’ll be dying of heat and begging for winter to come back… just can’t win 🙂

Hi Julie! If you like toasted coconut chips, you MUST try Dang Toasted Coconut Chips. Their caramel sea salt flavor is to die for!! And only three ingredients–coconut, coconut sugar, and sea salt. SO good.
Julie says
caramel sea salt!? sign me up!!
gretch | gretchruns says
I’ll definitely have to try out those coconut chips! Have you ever tried So Delicious coconut creamer in your coffee? It’s amazing! I signed up for a 6am spin class on Friday…I don’t know how you do it all the time! That class is so hard for me to wake up for, I can’t imagine also teaching it!
Oldman says
Here, in Southwest Florida, we have 300 days of summer and I like it like that! Since I hate workouts inside I guess I’m n the right place!
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
Those coconut chips sound good!
I almost feel guilty living here in SoCal where there’s zero snow or real winter…
Emma @ Life's A Runner says
Oh my goodness – I am absolutely obsessed with coconut chips. I’m not even usually a chip person (give me all the sweets), but for some reason, those things get me every time! Although, I haven’t had any for far too long…looks like it’s time for a trip to Whole Foods. 🙂
Erin @ Erin's Inside Job says
I can’t wait for warm weather in Chicago. We moved here in the winter, so I haven’t even had a chance to experience it yet! I just got back from CA and I forgot what it was like to be warm.
Do you head back to the gym to work out or do you do other stuff? I just hear you saying you go back to the gym a lot but not to teach. Glad you are doing GOTR again; I always liked reading about that!
Sarah @ Sweet Miles says
I bet it’s been fun experiencing more seasons since you moved from Florida! Be safe in the snow!
Allie says
I have tried making this pancake so many times but it never comes out looking like a pancake. What’s your secret
Kat says
I was so surprised by the North Carolina snow this morning! I was teaching Pure Barre in Chapel Hill at 6am and I happened to glance into the parking lot at like 6:45 and saw that all the roads and cars were covered. Hope you all stayed safe and warm today!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Happy Tuesday! We got a little dusting of snow here too (in SC!) but nothing like what we’re expecting tomorrow night!
Rachel @ Blonde with a Chanse says
I love living in Utah because it has 4 seasons, so I’m with you!

I think one snowfall a year would do the trick for me. After that, I’d be ready to move on to spring. In Alabama, we get a short spring and fall, so I’d say we “technically” get 4 seasons. But our springs and falls are hot one day and freezing the next…with a handful of real spring and fall days thrown in.
