During the summer months when it’s hot outside, it’s easier for me to remember to stay hydrated because warmer weather makes me thirstier and serves almost as a daily reminder to sip on a cold, refreshing beverage throughout the day. As the temperatures begin to drop, my desire to drink a lot of cold water decreases significantly, but there are a few key things we can all do to help remind ourselves to drink and stay hydrated all year long.
Below you will find a few tips that can be easily implemented to help keep yourself hydrated every day! (And stay tuned for a hydration-themed giveaway at the end of this post, thanks to Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water!)
- Opt For A Larger Water Bottle
If I have a large water bottle sitting in front of me as I work on the computer, I will often look down to find the water bottle completely drained without realizing I’ve been guzzling it down. Mindless drinking for the win! By opting for a larger water bottle – one that holds 20+ ounces – I find myself drinking more since a larger amount of water is simply sitting in front of me, making staying hydrated a bit easier!
- Refill Your Water Bottle Every Time You Go To The Bathroom
This is a tip I started to follow when I was working at my previous desk job, but now that I work from home, it’s one I still try to remind myself to follow since it’s a great way to remind yourself to always have a full water bottle with you! If you fill up your water bottle every time you use the bathroom, you’ll always have a full water bottle on hand, making staying hydrated that much easier!
- Vary Your Beverage To Prevent Boredom
If you’re anything like me, sipping on water all day long can start to get a bit boring. When I was pregnant, and now that I’m nursing, I cannot seem to drink enough but drinking tons and tons of plain water can feel a little dull. When I feel water boredom setting in, I opt for sparkling water or extract water to spice things up a bit! It’s an easy and delicious way to sneak in extra fluids.
I was recently sent a few bottles of Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water to try and it’s a great option to turn to when you want to hydrate your body with something that tastes great, too! The PACt® cranberry extract water contains PACs (proanthocyanidins), unique, powerful elements found deep inside cranberries that help cleanse and purify your body. The cranberry extract water is made with clean ingredients (the bright red color comes from cranberries alone and it’s sweetened naturally) and the water has only 10 calories per 16 ounce bottle.
My favorite flavor is the Cranberry Mango-Passionfruit and I love all of them mixed with a little bit of sparkling water for a refreshing mocktail any time of the day!
- Use A Straw
Is it just me, or is it a billion times easier to drink water when you do it from a straw (especially if you’re multi-tasking while pushing a baby in a stroller and walking your dog)? It makes sipping on water more fun and I try to drink most of my water from a water bottle or tumbler that has a straw. For some reason I just seem to drink more when I do it from a straw!
- Add Your Own Fun Flavors
According to Ocean Spray’s hydration survey (which you may find and take here), more than 60 percent of Americans are drinking less than eight glasses of water a day and more than half of all Americans don’t feel the need to hydrate when temperatures cool down. Make your water or water-based beverage more fun by adding your own flavors! Throw some fresh orange, grapefruit or cucumber slices into a cold cup of water. Crush mint leaves and stir them into sparkling water. Add frozen grapes to cranberry extract water for a tasty alternative to ice cubes!
Anything to make staying hydrated a little more fun!

Since I work from home I keep a glass of water by my sink. Each time I go into the kitchen or walk past I make myself drink some water. Keeping a cup out for me is a constant reminder to hydrate!
Sandy says
I am constantly drinking water at my desk and getting up to walk to the bathroom is my reward for drinking it all! its a nice little break in my day to walk to the bathroom 🙂
Rachel says
I make sure to have a reusable water bottle everywhere. In the car, at home, and in the office!
Eliza says
I keep a hydration check-list in my planner. There are 8 water drops and I fill them in every time I finish my water bottle. I love crossing things off to-do lists, why shouldn’t water be one of them!?
stacey says
I bring a cup of water or bcaa’s with me everywhere I go.
Katie says
I always keep a tervis cup full of water within easy reach on my desk! I’ve also started drinking sparkling water in the afternoons to replace my former Diet Coke addiction.
Pooja Parikh says
I’ve started adding small amounts of water (3 “items” of 25oz) to my to-do list. As a grad student, I am extremely motivated to cross anything off my to-do list so it keeps me drinking water! I just cross one off every time I empty my water bottle!
Deana says
I cut and freeze lemon slices, so I always have lemon to add to my water!
Sarah says
I switch to hot tea in the winter. Combined with la croix to keep me drinking 🙂
Michelle Blizzard says
Working in the restaurant industry makes it extra difficult to stay hydrated! So I drag around my Starbucks Venti tumbler, add lemon or cucumber, and make sure I drink at least 3 or 4 tumblers-full in an 8 hour shift, and always drink 2 to 3 more at home!
Jill says
I drink from a large cup all day long at my desk at work. I like my water nice and cold so I add lots of ice.
Thanks.

I stay hydrated by keeping a bottle with a straw. I drink more out of straw!
Laura says
I use a 32 oz water bottle that I keep on my desk and refill every time I get up to go potty! I actually crave water now also.
Amanda D. says
To stay hydrated, I have different reusable water bottles for everything. I use a squirt bottle for the gym, a bottle with a straw for work, one with a screw top for my bedside table, and so on. I also keep sparkling water and flavored water on hand and in the fridge at my office. I just feel better when I drink more water!
Lauren S. says
I refill my water bottle often at work to get away from my desk and take a quick break!
Jordan K says
I love to squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice into my water. It’s so good for you and tastes great too!
Rebecca says
I like the trick of wearing 4 small bangles on one wrist, and once I’ve finished a bottle of water I switch one of the bracelets to the other wrist. Once I’ve switched all 4 bangles, I start switching them back! It’s an easy way to see how much water I’ve consumed throughout the day, plus it gets me to wear jewelry, which I might otherwise be too lazy to put on!
Chelsea says
I’ve always been pretty good at drinking water so I rarely struggle and when I’m at work it’s never a problem because getting water gives me a reason to get up from my desk. However, I notice that on the weekends I’ll get halfway through the day and realize I’m DYING of thirst (cue the dramatics) I think it’s because we try to fit everything into the weekends the biggest thing that helps me is making sure I have a couple of bottles of water in the cars so I’m not tempted to go through the drive thru and get a soda (which doesn’t help with hydration but sounds so good when you’re thirsty!)
Kristen C says
I love this giveaway! I’m 15 weeks pregnant and really need to increase my water intake! I’ve never really drank much of anything. One thing I try to do is finish two of my big water bottles, one before lunchtime, one before I leave work for the day.
Jenna Unerstall says
I try to get my coffee drank before I get to work so that I can immediately begin drinking water. I have a huge Bubba keg with a straw just like yours that I’ve used for years. Even my students know about “Bubba” and how important “he” is to me. I try and drink at least 2 keg fulls of it all year round and I put half a lemon in mine everyday. Enjoy your vacation!
alanah r says
I challenge myself to refill twice before lunch, drink a whole bottle before I get home from my commute, etc. It works!
Hayley says
It’s WAY harder to drink as much water as I should in the colder months. I take a jumbo bottle of water with me to work and basically challenge myself to finish it before the work day is done. It’s a great way to make sure I’m getting enough!
Nicole says
I try to keep a full water bottle at my desk or near me at home at all times, if there is one around that has some water in it, chances are I will drink it!
Laura says
I take my water bottle everywhere, and make sure to drink at least 100 oz per day (I know this seems like a lot, but I’m breastfeeding!).
Rae says
I drink 20oz of water before each meal. It’s a great way to get 60oz in without thinking about it!
Alyssa says
I typically have water with me wherever I go, I carry a water bottle with me and keep one next to my bed at night. I like to drink room temperature water, that way I can chug it without a brain freeze! 🙂

I put squeeze lemons into my water all of the time — it’s delicious!

I make sure to have a glass of water as soon as I wake up, and keep one at my desk to refill all day at work.

I drink sparkling water. Something about the carbonation helps me drink more.

I keep my glass water bottle with my at all times and once a day put fresh cut up fruit in my water to jazz it up! 🙂 Helps me drink so much more water.
Amanda says
I like to use fresh fruit in mine, as well as opt for sparkling water when I need a little fizz in my life!!

The straw trick is no joke! I definitely drink more when I have my tervis/straw sitting right next to me at work!
Marissa says
Drinking water out of a glass with a straw has been key for me. I also love LaCroix sparkling water.
Chelsie says
I try to track it (either with an app or with a paper at my desk). Seeing is believing & then it forces me to drink more!!
Some days are harder than others 🙂
brookehamiltonblog says
I stay hydrated at my desk job the exact same way you do! I have a 32oz nalgene bottle that I drink without even realizing it! I fill it up when I use the restroom too. I try to drink two full nalgene’s while at work.
Jenn C. says
I always try to buy sparkling water when I am at the supermarket. I try to alternate between normal water, which I find boring, and something like La Croix which has fun flavors and is also super clean and guilt-free. It really makes a difference and I find that I drink more water throughout the day. La Croix can be pricey but Cartwheel at Target always seems to have coupons for it!
Brittaniee says
I always keep a 32oz water bottle at my desk and I have the same one at home. My goal is drink 3-4 of them a day! Usually it works too!
Jaclyn Ferguson says
I LOVE your blog and I have been looking for ways to stay hydrated even more! One tip is that I have marked on my water bottles and I have also included my Kindergartener’s in the process! I tell them that I have to have a bottle gone by a certain time in our day and they hold me accountable! Everything is more fun with little friends to help!! I also find it very helpful to have a wide straw in my water (flavored with lemons and limes of course)!! 🙂
Stefanie says
I set a timer every 30 minutes at work and force myself to get up to go to the bathroom and/or get water. I always keep my water cup completely full!
Erin A. says
I stay hydrated the same way! I have a 16oz tumbler on my desk at all times! But I do wish it was bigger! And since I drink plain water all day at work, I keep my home fridge stocked with sparkling water to keep things interesting!
Abby says
To me, a fun cup makes all the difference! I also like my water really cold and love that our fridge can do crushed ice!
Kelly Tschida says
I always add ice to my water. It makes it much more appealing to drink ice cold water. And then I drink it all before the ice melts!
Shannon says
I try to make sure I have at least three water bottles full of water before lunch and 3 after.
Heidi says
When I first wake-up I drink a glass of water. I live in a dry climate so my throat get dry which makes it easy to remember to keep drinking water.
Haley says
I always bring my water bottle with me. I bring it to meetings so that I am constantly drinking from it.
Anna Ransdell says
I make a pitcher of “spa” water – usually thin sliced cucumbers or orange slices- it makes it easy to drink a lot of water.
Lori says
at work i always try to drink a full bottle before lunch…it sets the pace for the rest of the day. i also love adding lemon. or drinking grapefruit la croix!
Stephanie Karin says
I have a desk job, so I actually got a -smaller- water bottle so that I’d finish it off more often, which gave me the double benefit of an excuse to get up and walk around a bit more often in order to keep it full!
Janel Shanks says
I keep a water bottle with me at all times! Sometimes I feel like the girl from Signs with 78921739 halfway full water glasses sitting everywhere. You can find a bottle in my car, at my desk, on my night stand, on my coffee table, etc. It is always in tow 🙂
Emily says
To keep myself hydrated, I make an effort to drink 32 oz of water before lunch, 8 oz with my lunch, and 32 oz after lunch. The rest of the evening I slow down on drinking water (so I’m not up going to the bathroom at night:)
