Staying Hydrated All Year Long (+ Giveaway!)

October 13, 2015 by Julie 1,455 Comments

During the summer months when it’s hot outside, it’s easier for me to remember to stay hydrated because warmer weather makes me thirstier and serves almost as a daily reminder to sip on a cold, refreshing beverage throughout the day. As the temperatures begin to drop, my desire to drink a lot of cold water decreases significantly, but there are a few key things we can all do to help remind ourselves to drink and stay hydrated all year long.

Below you will find a few tips that can be easily implemented to help keep yourself hydrated every day! (And stay tuned for a hydration-themed giveaway at the end of this post, thanks to Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water!)

  • Opt For A Larger Water Bottle

pink Bubba Keg

If I have a large water bottle sitting in front of me as I work on the computer, I will often look down to find the water bottle completely drained without realizing I’ve been guzzling it down. Mindless drinking for the win! By opting for a larger water bottle – one that holds 20+ ounces – I find myself drinking more since a larger amount of water is simply sitting in front of me, making staying hydrated a bit easier!

  • Refill Your Water Bottle Every Time You Go To The Bathroom

This is a tip I started to follow when I was working at my previous desk job, but now that I work from home, it’s one I still try to remind myself to follow since it’s a great way to remind yourself to always have a full water bottle with you! If you fill up your water bottle every time you use the bathroom, you’ll always have a full water bottle on hand, making staying hydrated that much easier!

  • Vary Your Beverage To Prevent Boredom

Ocean Spray PACt Water

If you’re anything like me, sipping on water all day long can start to get a bit boring. When I was pregnant, and now that I’m nursing, I cannot seem to drink enough but drinking tons and tons of plain water can feel a little dull. When I feel water boredom setting in, I opt for sparkling water or extract water to spice things up a bit! It’s an easy and delicious way to sneak in extra fluids.

I was recently sent a few bottles of Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water to try and it’s a great option to turn to when you want to hydrate your body with something that tastes great, too! The PACt® cranberry extract water contains PACs (proanthocyanidins), unique, powerful elements found deep inside cranberries that help cleanse and purify your body. The cranberry extract water is made with clean ingredients (the bright red color comes from cranberries alone and it’s sweetened naturally) and the water has only 10 calories per 16 ounce bottle.

My favorite flavor is the Cranberry Mango-Passionfruit and I love all of them mixed with a little bit of sparkling water for a refreshing mocktail any time of the day!

  • Use A Straw

Target Tumbler

Is it just me, or is it a billion times easier to drink water when you do it from a straw (especially if you’re multi-tasking while pushing a baby in a stroller and walking your dog)? It makes sipping on water more fun and I try to drink most of my water from a water bottle or tumbler that has a straw. For some reason I just seem to drink more when I do it from a straw!

  • Add Your Own Fun Flavors

lemons

According to Ocean Spray’s hydration survey (which you may find and take here), more than 60 percent of Americans are drinking less than eight glasses of water a day and more than half of all Americans don’t feel the need to hydrate when temperatures cool down. Make your water or water-based beverage more fun by adding your own flavors! Throw some fresh orange, grapefruit or cucumber slices into a cold cup of water. Crush mint leaves and stir them into sparkling water. Add frozen grapes to cranberry extract water for a tasty alternative to ice cubes!

Anything to make staying hydrated a little more fun!

Since I work from home I keep a glass of water by my sink. Each time I go into the kitchen or walk past I make myself drink some water. Keeping a cup out for me is a constant reminder to hydrate!

I keep a hydration check-list in my planner. There are 8 water drops and I fill them in every time I finish my water bottle. I love crossing things off to-do lists, why shouldn’t water be one of them!?

I’ve started adding small amounts of water (3 “items” of 25oz) to my to-do list. As a grad student, I am extremely motivated to cross anything off my to-do list so it keeps me drinking water! I just cross one off every time I empty my water bottle!

Working in the restaurant industry makes it extra difficult to stay hydrated! So I drag around my Starbucks Venti tumbler, add lemon or cucumber, and make sure I drink at least 3 or 4 tumblers-full in an 8 hour shift, and always drink 2 to 3 more at home!

To stay hydrated, I have different reusable water bottles for everything. I use a squirt bottle for the gym, a bottle with a straw for work, one with a screw top for my bedside table, and so on. I also keep sparkling water and flavored water on hand and in the fridge at my office. I just feel better when I drink more water!

I like the trick of wearing 4 small bangles on one wrist, and once I’ve finished a bottle of water I switch one of the bracelets to the other wrist. Once I’ve switched all 4 bangles, I start switching them back! It’s an easy way to see how much water I’ve consumed throughout the day, plus it gets me to wear jewelry, which I might otherwise be too lazy to put on!

I’ve always been pretty good at drinking water so I rarely struggle and when I’m at work it’s never a problem because getting water gives me a reason to get up from my desk. However, I notice that on the weekends I’ll get halfway through the day and realize I’m DYING of thirst (cue the dramatics) I think it’s because we try to fit everything into the weekends the biggest thing that helps me is making sure I have a couple of bottles of water in the cars so I’m not tempted to go through the drive thru and get a soda (which doesn’t help with hydration but sounds so good when you’re thirsty!)

I love this giveaway! I’m 15 weeks pregnant and really need to increase my water intake! I’ve never really drank much of anything. One thing I try to do is finish two of my big water bottles, one before lunchtime, one before I leave work for the day.

I try to get my coffee drank before I get to work so that I can immediately begin drinking water. I have a huge Bubba keg with a straw just like yours that I’ve used for years. Even my students know about “Bubba” and how important “he” is to me. I try and drink at least 2 keg fulls of it all year round and I put half a lemon in mine everyday. Enjoy your vacation!

It’s WAY harder to drink as much water as I should in the colder months. I take a jumbo bottle of water with me to work and basically challenge myself to finish it before the work day is done. It’s a great way to make sure I’m getting enough!

I always try to buy sparkling water when I am at the supermarket. I try to alternate between normal water, which I find boring, and something like La Croix which has fun flavors and is also super clean and guilt-free. It really makes a difference and I find that I drink more water throughout the day. La Croix can be pricey but Cartwheel at Target always seems to have coupons for it!

I LOVE your blog and I have been looking for ways to stay hydrated even more! One tip is that I have marked on my water bottles and I have also included my Kindergartener’s in the process! I tell them that I have to have a bottle gone by a certain time in our day and they hold me accountable! Everything is more fun with little friends to help!! I also find it very helpful to have a wide straw in my water (flavored with lemons and limes of course)!! 🙂
