During the summer months when it’s hot outside, it’s easier for me to remember to stay hydrated because warmer weather makes me thirstier and serves almost as a daily reminder to sip on a cold, refreshing beverage throughout the day. As the temperatures begin to drop, my desire to drink a lot of cold water decreases significantly, but there are a few key things we can all do to help remind ourselves to drink and stay hydrated all year long.
Below you will find a few tips that can be easily implemented to help keep yourself hydrated every day! (And stay tuned for a hydration-themed giveaway at the end of this post, thanks to Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water!)
- Opt For A Larger Water Bottle
If I have a large water bottle sitting in front of me as I work on the computer, I will often look down to find the water bottle completely drained without realizing I’ve been guzzling it down. Mindless drinking for the win! By opting for a larger water bottle – one that holds 20+ ounces – I find myself drinking more since a larger amount of water is simply sitting in front of me, making staying hydrated a bit easier!
- Refill Your Water Bottle Every Time You Go To The Bathroom
This is a tip I started to follow when I was working at my previous desk job, but now that I work from home, it’s one I still try to remind myself to follow since it’s a great way to remind yourself to always have a full water bottle with you! If you fill up your water bottle every time you use the bathroom, you’ll always have a full water bottle on hand, making staying hydrated that much easier!
- Vary Your Beverage To Prevent Boredom
If you’re anything like me, sipping on water all day long can start to get a bit boring. When I was pregnant, and now that I’m nursing, I cannot seem to drink enough but drinking tons and tons of plain water can feel a little dull. When I feel water boredom setting in, I opt for sparkling water or extract water to spice things up a bit! It’s an easy and delicious way to sneak in extra fluids.
I was recently sent a few bottles of Ocean Spray® PACt® cranberry extract water to try and it’s a great option to turn to when you want to hydrate your body with something that tastes great, too! The PACt® cranberry extract water contains PACs (proanthocyanidins), unique, powerful elements found deep inside cranberries that help cleanse and purify your body. The cranberry extract water is made with clean ingredients (the bright red color comes from cranberries alone and it’s sweetened naturally) and the water has only 10 calories per 16 ounce bottle.
My favorite flavor is the Cranberry Mango-Passionfruit and I love all of them mixed with a little bit of sparkling water for a refreshing mocktail any time of the day!
- Use A Straw
Is it just me, or is it a billion times easier to drink water when you do it from a straw (especially if you’re multi-tasking while pushing a baby in a stroller and walking your dog)? It makes sipping on water more fun and I try to drink most of my water from a water bottle or tumbler that has a straw. For some reason I just seem to drink more when I do it from a straw!
- Add Your Own Fun Flavors
According to Ocean Spray’s hydration survey (which you may find and take here), more than 60 percent of Americans are drinking less than eight glasses of water a day and more than half of all Americans don’t feel the need to hydrate when temperatures cool down. Make your water or water-based beverage more fun by adding your own flavors! Throw some fresh orange, grapefruit or cucumber slices into a cold cup of water. Crush mint leaves and stir them into sparkling water. Add frozen grapes to cranberry extract water for a tasty alternative to ice cubes!
Anything to make staying hydrated a little more fun!

I love using a straw to make sure I’m hydrated, but I also bring two big water bottles to work daily and try to finish them before I leave. On the weekends, I fill up the water bottles in the morning and drink them throughout the day. It’s a system that works for me!
Kaitlin G says
Like you, it’s easy for me in the summer. When it’s cold out, I’ll leave my Brita pitcher out on the counter so the water isn’t super cold. Plus tea 🙂
Kelly says
Love your ideas for making hydration more fun!! It’s tough for me to stay hydrated while at work (I’m a nurse on a busy unit) but I do my best to drink plenty of water from my tumbler. On my days off I don’t go anywhere without my camelbak water bottle!
Emily Lutz says
To stay hydrated all year long, I’ve found a tumbler (with a straw haha) that I love and made it a goal to drink 2 by mid-morning workout, one after, and at least one between lunch and dinner!
Zoë says
I stock my fridge with La Croix and keep my Brita full.
Amber says
I’m great about drinking water during the week, I make sure to keep water at my desk at all times but I need to get better about drinking more on the weekends.
Michelle says
I make sure to start everyday with a large glass of water, first thing in the AM! I also use your trick of filling up my water bottle every time I go to the bathroom. Since I work at a desk it also gives me a small walking break! 🙂
Tara says
I make a point of bringing my water bottle EVERYWHERE! I also have a screen saver that reminds me to drink water whenever I see it…it works!
Lindsey @ Indiana Hearts says
My water bottle comes everywhere with me—I will turn the car around and go back for it if I don’t grab it! Having water constantly with me helps me remember to drink enough water each day.
Kelsey says
I try to keep a large water bottle with me all the time. It’s definitely easier on weekdays. Today I forgot to bring mine from home so I’ll have to be more proactive to get lots of water!
Shanna says
I drink warm lemon water in the morning to help hydrate on cold days.
arielle cinalli says

Getting a new water bottle always helps me drink more water. I’m excited to use it!
Shannon says
I try and drink one big bottle of water before lunch, one with, and one in the afternoon. That way, any water I drink at night is extra!
chloe says
I work in an office and keep a 24 oz tumbler of water on my desk at all times. At home I like to drink a lot of la croix water to mix things up!
Reva says
I often drink water out of a coffee mug too–just seems more fun to sip out of a mug all day sometimes 🙂
Lindsay says
I keep my water mug in front of my face at all times… which doesn’t always work, so I bring La Croix to work every day. My coworkers affectionately (I hope) call it “Lindsay Water”.
kaitlyn says
I like to make a goal at the beginning of the day of how many full bottles I plan to drink throughout the day.
I also use “fill up” times as a good break from my desk. I work at a college, so I go to another building to fill up my bottle and get a few steps in!
Kelly Rabun says
I love this topic. I took a water challenge at work two years ago to drink 96 oz of water a day. After the challenge was complete, I noticed positive changes in my skin. I now continue drinking 96 oz of water a day. I have an old big bottle I fill up a total of three times. I would some new bottles. I just think of the positives to keep me drinking everyday!
Autumn says
I am horrible with drinking water! I work a couple 12 hour shifts a week at a dialysis unit and all of our patients are on fluid restrictions. We are not allowed food or drink on the floor, and for me I don’t like to drink in front of my patients. What I found helpful is to keep a water bottle with a straw behind the nurses station. We make rounds to monitor the patients and after each trip I swing by the nurses stations and take a sip! Before I know it, it’s time to fill up again! At home I practically have a water bottle glued to my hand!
Sarah says
I have always found that drinking with a straw is so very helpful when trying to consume water. I love the idea of adding fruit! I am also nursing my 11 month old daughter and it is amazing how dehydrated you can get and quickly!
Jill says
I always carry a water bottle with me and have a large note taped to my laptop at work that reads “Drink Water.”
Amanda says
I bring two water bottles with me to work. That way I always have one full at my desk when I need it.

Just like you, I keep a big glass of water at my desk and carry it with me to meetings. I notice that I drink a ton in meetings, which can be a problem if the meeting is over an hour long….
Kristine H. says
I do have a hard time staying hydrated, and I didn’t realize how difficult it was until I got pregnant. Let’s just say, it’s been a quick lesson in what works and what doesn’t work. I agree with your boredom therapy of switching up beverages or adding your own pop of flavor with lemon or grapefruit wedges.
amy says
i alwayssss use a straw!
Soozi Reed says
I stay hydrated by constantly keeping water with me! Everywhere I go!
Vicki says
I always start my day by drinking an entire glass of water as soon as I wake up. And I agree COMPLETELY about drinking with a straw – when I’m working at the computer it just takes so much more effort to take a cap off of a bottle! 🙂
Kelsey says
I carry a water bottle with me EVERYWHERE. Although I recently dropped my straw on the gym floor and have not washed it yet, so am carrying a smaller bottle. It’s driving me crazy!
Brooke says
I keep a huge water bottle at my desk, which I try and fill up at least three times a day. Hydration is so important for your skin, so whenever I feel myself going for a sugary drink, I remind myself that my face will look better if i go for the water!
Kirsten Lee says
I drink a quart, yes 4 cups! right away in the morning. Helps curb the thirst and overnight dehydration.
Ailed says
I use an app on my phone that reminds me every hour to drink water! Cold water is the best!
Jen says
I work for a PR firm and one of our clients sent us clear thirty oz cups with markers on them so you can see how much you’re downing during the day. It’s a great reminder to keep guzzling!
Jen A says
I keep water with me where ever I go so I’m never caught somewhere thirsty. Also I have noticed that no matter what time of year the colder my water is the more I want it. Thank goodness I have an ice machine both at home and work. I also keep my water directly in front of me that way everyone I look at it I think I want some water.
Alli O. says
I mark my water bottle for times of the day. That way I know how much I should drink before a certain time and I’m not chugging water at the end of the day trying to keep hydrated- it reminds me to sip throughout the day
Amanda Williams says
I try to take 3 swallows of water every 10 min. Weird, but it gets me through the work day!
Kerri Woods says
I love this! I am 9 weeks pregnant so I am really trying to stay hydrated these days! I have a fruit infuser that I use sometimes when water seems too dull! I like to add lemon, cucumber, and berries!
Michaela Granados says
I love making spa water! Especially with frozen pineapples and strawberries
Jill says
This is a great reminder to drink lots of water. I love cranberry juice, so this new Ocean Spray water sound delish. I try to keep a glass of water at my desk at work and refill every time I finish it and/or need to get up and stretch my legs. I could definitely be better about this, though.
Jen says
I drink a cold glass of water as soon as I wake up in the morning, and immediately bring a 20oz Tervis into my home office (along with my coffee, of course!) I used to be terrible about keeping myself hydrated, but as soon as I started this morning routine it became habit to constantly fill my Tervis throughout the day.
Jennifer says
I drink a glass of water with each meal. Also I remind myself the health benefits of drinking water.
shannon says
I always keep a big bottle of seltzer on my desk or refillable water bottle. It helps that we have filtered water at work! I need to get better at staying hydrated when I am home!
Sonya says
I fill multiple water bottles at school every morning so I can stay hydrated all day long…I usually don’t have time to refill the empties throughout the day!
Cate says
I always have a reusable water bottle with me to stay hydrated. And yes, drinking water through a straw makes it much easier and I drink way more! 🙂
Alyson says
I keep a Nalgene bottle at my desk at work and try and fill it up and drink four full bottles per work day!
Annie says
I have a water bottle at my desk and another one at home that are always full. I fill up the one at my desk every time I go to the bathroom. The one at home is always full and my cat can’t knock it over, so I have no problems carrying it with me from room to room and putting it down wherever!
Diana says
One thing I do is bring a water bottle everywhere I go and try to fill it twice during the day. I notice that if I give myself goals, like to finish one full water bottle by lunchtime and one by dinnertime, I’m much more likely to stay hydrated! I’m a major rule-abider, so I think giving myself deadlines is a good trick for me!
Becca says
love getting la croix and using my soda stream. having sparkling water makes drinking it much more enjoyable!
erica says
i start every morning with a cup of hot water with lemon – usually after a workout/hot yoga session where i’ve already downed a water bottle’s worth of hydration before even realizing it! squeezing in the extra hot mug while i get ready in the morning starts my day off on a hydrated high point
Gabby @ gogabbith says
I make sure to always refill my water bottle!
