It’s the start of another week! I hope it’s a good one for you guys.
Our weekend was filled with summer fun. Barbeques, outdoor pool time, card games and quite a few fruity cocktails.
On Saturday morning, Ryan and I spent some time outside washing our cars while Sadie had a blast in her kiddie pool.
Since the temperatures climbed into the upper 90s and the humidity was raging, Sadie was more than happy to relax in her pool (with her frisbee close by, of course).
Then it was time for the adults to enjoy some pool time! Ryan and I drove over to Eric and Amanda’s house for a barbeque by their pool.
Our afternoon started with drinks! Everyone else drank out of normal cups but Eric thought it would be amusing to make me drink out of a stein.
The guys did a great job of taking over both food and drinks for the day.
Sadie helped!
We had burgers, potato salad, chips, dip, ice cream cupcakes and fruit pops.
Eric made the cheeseburgers by mixing bacon and shredded cheddar cheese into the ground beef and topping the patties with sliced green olives before melting cheese on top. They were fantastic and I topped mine with all the veggies, ketchup and mustard.
We all enjoyed Miami Vices (pina colada + strawberry daiquiri) with dinner.
Oh yes!
Dessert was a combination of ice cream cupcakes and fruit bars.
Ryan and I found those bars while Ryan was on a mission to find the traditional flavored ice pops that remind everyone of childhood.
Remember these?
The two people we asked at Publix about them had absolutely no idea what we were talking about and told us to check a specialty foods store. What!? I’m pretty sure every summer camp in America has hundreds of these babies stored in their freezers and I doubt they’re shopping at specialty stores.
The fruit bars we ended up buying were pretty good and 5,000 times better for us, I’m sure, because they were made with real fruit and didn’t look neon.
After dessert, we spent the rest of the night sipping on our drinks outside by the pool and playing cards.
It was a great summer Saturday!
Question of the Morning
- What was your favorite childhood ice cream treat?
I loved two ice cream truck classics: Choco Tacos and strawberry shortcake bars!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
Looks like a great weekend! Love the pics of Sadie in the pool, too cute!
Oh man just looking at the FlavorIce’s made my throat scratchy! Remember that little feeling you’d get in your throat by the end? (Or is it just the Mr and I?)
When I was a kid, I ALWAYS got those orange push ups from the ice cream truck. Now, I’m not a fan. If we went to an ice cream place it was always a chocolate dipped cone. Yum!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
We used to have these Calippo’s not sure if it was an Australian thing but as a kid it was an ‘expensive’ ice cream (well at least at 6 yrs old) being that it was $1 compared to 50cents for the other ones but it was delicious.
So jealous of the sunny BBQ weather there! It is freezing cold and winter here!
Jackie Macharsky says
Miami vices are in fact one of my favorite summer drinks ever!!
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
oh my gosh they are so good.
meredith says
I always loved the Good Humor Chocolate Éclair. I loved the choco taco too! I also recall loving a Good Humor ice cream called the Fat Frog – it was green ice cream I think with chocolate coating and a gumball nose!
Jamie @ fitfortherun says
My favorites were those ice cream cones and rocket pops (the red white and blue popsicles!)
Melissa says
Looks so fun! My favorite ice cream treat was a Mickey Mouse ice cream bar. If you’re unfamiliar, it is vanilla and chocolate ice cream in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head and the ears are coated in chocolate! Yum, I loved it. Plus, I loved a “Conehead” Sundae from Friendly’s, which is a regional chain restaurant.
Megan (The Lyons' Share) says
Ahh those flavor ices bring back such memories! I loved the ice cream sandwiches between two chocolate chip cookies- I only got them when we went to baseball games! Ok, who am I kidding- I could totally go for one of those now! 🙂
Holly @ EatGreatBEGreat says
What a fun weekend! Love the pics of Sadie in the pool! She looks awfully happy! 🙂 OMG…I totally forgot about those ice pops! I used to love them as a child!
Traci says
Ah! Those push pops were such a classic. I don’t remember where I heard it, but I think they may have been discontinued (probably because they’re full of dye and other horrible things, haha). My favorites were frozen fruit bars (the strawberry and coconut) and Chipwiches! I also occasionally liked Screwballs (the pink ice/sherbert with a gumball at the bottom) that you had to eat with that small wooden paddle spoon.
Darrecia says
There are young people out there who are unfamiliar with flavored ice pops? Blasphemy! What’s wrong with the kids today? The strawberry shortcake bars were the only thing I really cared for off the ice cream truck… I wouldn’t mind one now, at 8:19 am… just kidding 😉
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Oh my god Choco Tacos!!! They were called winner tacos here in Ireland and hardly anyone remembers them! 100% awesome! We call the strawberry shortcake bars a “Brunch” here 🙂
Sara @ sarasmiles says
Looks like you had a great Saturday!
I was all about the ice cream Snicker’s bar. Gah…
Julie @ Peanut Butter Fingers says
Snickers ice cream bars are so darn delicious!!
Rachel @ Undercover Diva: A Sitcom says
You can buy those ice pops at Walmart! I don’t think you buy them frozen, though. I’ve only ever seen them on the end of the aisles. I loved drumsticks or dreamsicles when I was a kid! Looks like you had a great weekend!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Sounds like a fun weekend! 🙂 I used to love those ice pops growing up!
Karen @ Runner Girl Eats says
To this day my favorite ice cream treat is a Mickey Mouse Ice Cream from Disney. I swear they are magical.
Kelly @ Kelly Runs for Food says
Choco Tacos were one of my favorites too! I loved those chocolate ice cream bars from Dairy Queen too, can’t remember what they were called. Looks like a fun weekend!
Lindsey says
I loved plain old ice cream sandwiches or rocket popsicles from the ice cream truck.
Christine says
My kids still eat those popsicles! They sell them at Wal-Mart and Aldi. They are not by the frozen popsicles because you buy them non-frozen. They are located near the juices. My kids call them “juicy popsicles” because they love to drink the melted popsicle juice at the end. 🙂
kim says
You can buy the Flavorice at Walmart, they sell them in boxes of 100 I think. And they sell them year round!
Rebecca says
I’ve always been an ice cream sandwich kind of gal!
I recently got a box of those strawberry shortcake/chocolate eclair-type bars with the crunchies on the outside, but instead it was birthday cake flavor! They’re sooo good!
Emily @ Sweet Summer Smiles says
I used to eat those popsicles all summer long when I was a kid! Such good memories!! Sadie looks like she’s having a blast in her kiddie pool! I might have to invest in one of those for Bentley!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Those burgers sound fantastic! I love the idea of adding bacon to the ground beef mixture. Mmmm love Miami Vices! As for my favorite ice cream treat, I always went for the strawberry shortcake bars, the rocket popsicles, or the drumsticks!
Logan @ Mountains and Miles says
Mmmm mine was the chocolate version of those strawberry shortcake bars. LOVED THEM.
mary @ minutes per mile says
oh i also loved strawberry shortcake bars, as well as good old fashioned ice cream sandwiches. basically, anything that involved some sort of cookie + ice cream. amazing!
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
Haha, that’s funny that they didn’t know of those popsicles. They’re usually sold warm, in those bulk bins in the middle of the aisles.
Chelsea @ Chelsea Eats Treats says
I used to love those ice pops! I’ve been able to find them at places like Costco and Sam’s Club. I’m not sure if you guys belong there (or if they even have them in Florida?) but you should definitely check there next time you are craving some 🙂
Kat says
Whaaa? They never heard of fla-vor ices? Bizarre! Those things were everywhere growing up. Now that I think of it, I may have been allergic because they made my throat hurt SO bad. I still always ate them though. Oops…
I loved (and still do) the Toasted Almond Good Humor bars. Those things were worth their weight in gold in my house because all loved them.
Annie@ What's Annie Making? says
What a fun weekend! We can’t get Charlie to go in the kiddie pool. He hates baths and the pool is like one giant bath to him… I always loved the Mickey Mouse ice cream bars with the bubblegum eyes. I’d take the eyes off and make my mom hold them until I finished the ice cream. She must really love me 🙂
Heather Murphy says
Sadie looks like she is having so much fun! Chaco tacos were my brothers favorite! I loves the good ole’ ice cream sandwiches.
Ashley @ Eat Run Live Happy says
Chaco Tacos! Yum. I actually had those for the first time in my 20’s. I loved it but haven’t had once since. My childhood favorite was always plain ice cream sandwiches or home made popsicles.
Tiffany says
I can’t believe that you had trouble finding freezies! There are available here in Canadian grocery store EVERYWHERE and I think they would be considered a staple for summer refreshment!
I have never seen Choco Tacos and now I just might have to track them down!
Jill says
Chippers

Jessica @ FromtheKitchentotheRoad says
I love a standard ice cream bar with the hard chocolate on it. Soooooo good!
Pam Cook says
I cannot believe you could not find the flavor ice pops. I live near Asheville, NC and buy these every summer for my son. We find them at Wal-Mart or Ingles (a grocery store).
casie says
I always loved the character ice creams that came with bubblegum eyesand the slushies from dairy queen
Maria@TheBrooklynFig says
Ha! I’m laughing to myself because my husband and I literally just had a conversation days ago about his obsession, even as an adult, with fla-vor-ice. I told him there has to be something that’s better for you and apparently there is! He’s going to be so excited!
Suzanne says
Looks like a great time Julie. I love Miami Vices. They are my favorite drink. Yum!
Arielle M says
Ah my Publix has those throwback ice pops!! They even have mini ones!! So funny that they had no idea what you were talking about.
I used to love all those ice cream treats. Especially when the ice cream man came to summe camp! Memories….
Ashley @ Life and Fitness says
The choco taco!! I forgot about those. My uncle used to work at Taco Bell and bring so many of those home every night. I used to eat them ALL the time.
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
Orange pushups were always my hands-down favorite ice cream treat, though I do enjoy a traditional ice cream sandwich every now and again as well. Oh, and Twix ice cream bars? TO DIE FOR. Sooooo good.
Karen R @www.fabinyour40s.com says
I used to love the screwballs too. Thought I was getting a surprise with the gumball at the bottom! I hated those flavor ice things. UGH. Tasted too fake even whe I was a kid.
Sara @ LovingOnTheRun says
Any and all kinds of ice cream! That and a cookie cake – my mom always used to get them for us on our birthdays and I LOVED them!
Celina says
They have those ice pops at our local grocery store, Rouses, here in Louisiana. I think you can find them at Wal-Mart as well. They usually sell them unfrozen. I always enjoyed the character popcicles from the ice cream truck, the eyes were usally gumballs. I also enjoyed any sort of ice cream drumstick.
Joelle (On a Pink Typewriter) says
Chocolate eclair was my fav, followed by the bright colored Disney Popsicles– remember those?? And what the heck- how could know one know what those ices are?! We used to always eat them at pool parties as a kid.
Nicole @ not before my tea says
My boyfriend and I were actually JUST talking about our ice cream truck days last week! He liked the ice cream characters with gumball eyes but I’m with you – loved the strawberry shortcake bars. I also really liked the “Lick a Color” pops, even though they’re probably the most boring ones out there. 😉
Chelsea @ BigBitesLittleBudget says
We always buy otter pops! I think they are the same thing. They sell them in huge packs at Wal-Mart…no specialty store needed. I also love fudge bars in the summer!
Jan Klein says
I was all about the red, white & blue bomb pop or the rainbow colored snow cone. Yum!
