Who is ready for the weekend? Any exciting plans out there?
Ryan’s dad is coming in town tonight and then I’m off to Orlando tomorrow for a baby shower for my friend Carrie.
It will actually be the first baby shower I’ve ever been to and I’m not really sure what to expect. Are they like bridal showers where women just hang out and watch the mommy-to-be open gifts?
Regardless, I am excited!
Lunch
I was also awfully excited to dig into a delicious lunch.
Check out this salad!
The salad included a yummy mix of avocado, tomatoes, corn, crab meat, red onions and cilantro, all dressed up in honey mustard.
So summery! Fall, what?
After lunch, I took a brief breather to run to the Verizon store.
My phone has been experiencing major issues.
(Of course Sadie is my background.)
Most recently, I couldn’t hear anyone speak through anything but the loud speaker, and their voices were crazy quiet. I’ve been communicating solely by text with most people other than Ryan who served as my “tester” when I needed someone to call to see if it was working again.
Apparently the “Advanced Task Killer” app does more harm than good on many phones, so the woman I worked with at Verizon delete that off my phone, installed an update and popped out the phone’s battery, blew on it, and popped it back in.
Any other Nintendo lovers remember when you’d just take a Nintendo game that was acting funky out of the console, blow on it, put it back in the console and then it was as good as new again?
If only everything could be so easily fixed!
P.S. The original title of this post was “Just Blow On It.”
Question of the Afternoon
- What was/is your favorite video game?
Mine was definitely Donkey Kong. Anyone else remember the mine cart level? So cool!
Roz @ Fit Blogging for Fun, Family & Profit says
OMG lol I think I’m only like 5 years older than you but I totally remember doing that. Why did that always work??? Salad looks yum-o!! I just got the iPhone in the mail today…my phone is so jacked up it’s really funny. My kids have dropped it, I have dropped it, screen cracked in multiple places, slow as molasses etc. Can’t wait to get my phone up and running! You too, that’s a pain!
Tara @ Chip Chip Hooray says
Oooh have fun at the baby shower! I’ve only been to one, but it was quite similar to a bridal shower, I thought–lots of opening tiny little baby gifts, lots of eating yummy things, and lots of squealing. Although we did play baby bingo with all the presents my cousin received! Alas, I did not win the centerpiece.
P.S. I totally want to go back to my parents’ house and dig out my old Sega Genesis now. 🙂
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
My favorite game was the original Super Mario. I still have my Nintendo somewhere in the basement. Maybe one day when my son is older, I’ll dig it out and have him see what video games used to be.
Baby showers are bridal showers but with baby gifts. I love em too!
Leslie says
Haha I laughed out loud. Best blog title name ever. We played mario, top gun and duck hunt!
Sweet and Savvy says
MarioKart!! Best video game ever. 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says

All the many reincarnations of Final Fantasy. I did enjoy Donkey Kong but I got into it late in the game (ha!).
Lindsey says
Mario Brothers all the way!!
I love that salad – made it a few times this summer!
Cynthia says
Thanks for the info on the Advanced Task Killer. I also have problems with others’ ability to hear me. Hopefully it helps!
BTW, the salad looks yummy 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
i hope it helps your phone work better, too! i had no idea it was an issue.
Faith @ For the Health of It says
Yep, baby showers are pretty chill. I’ve been to a few (most recently my best friend’s, and I was all “WHA??? I’m too young for this!”…but they’re basically just lots of presents, food, and silly games (if you get lucky you wont have to taste baby food mixtures…although that would make for a hilarious blog post)
Brianne says
I have the same problem with my phone! Thanks for letting us know that trick to fixing it!!
Mallory @ It's Only Life says
haha! love this post. i totally remember blowing on the old nintendo games. my favorite was super mario bros….id play that with my brother for hours!
Divya @ saved by the BEHL says
I like to think our email exchange helped with the original title.:) Lol
peanutbutterfingers says
LOL! that’s probably why it was on my mind to begin with!
Christelle says
haha I have the original Nintendo, and I was actually playing it last month and had to blow on it to work! I used to have a ton of games, but sadly I can’t find them 🙁 I only have Mario 1 and duckhunt, and Mario 3. Both still awesome, but I remeber loving Dr. Mario which I can’t find and upsets me!
And that salad looks amazing!
Margaret says
I still have a Nintendo64 that I have to do that with all the time!
Hope says
That salad does look very summery and better yet, it looks delicious! 🙂
I went to my very first baby shower last year for one of my really good friends. I had so much fun! I think the best game that we played was when we cut pieces of yarn to the length that we thought would wrap around her belly. The person who guessed the closest length won a gift. Have fun! 🙂
meg says
That lunch looks fantastic!!! I’ve never been to a baby shower either! Can’t wait to read all about it!
My favorite video game was definitely Spyro or Mario Party! My bro and I still play Mario Party on his WII all the time!
Chelsea @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
Looks soo good! I love fresh food for lunch. Something that fills me up but not skimping on flavor. I also dont really like to have JUST veggies. But this looks like such a great dish with LOTs of flavor and texture!
Micaela says
mine cart carnage!! best game ever.
Brittany says
I used to love nintendo! haha my favorite was mario kart !
Julie @SavvyEats says
Dan still has his old video games, so we still blow on the games to get them to work sometimes. 😉
Also, my phone hates me as well… I can’t hear calls or voicemails, and couldn’t text last night either. But I think Sprint just called to say the replacement was in, so hooray! (Though they did try to tell me by calling the cell phone that can’t receive calls…)
Erin says
Grossest baby shower game ever: they smash up various candy bars and put each in a diaper…..then you’re supposed to taste it and guess which candy bar it was….yuck! But, I guess I will do anything for chocolate 😉
Kristi says
I was having problems with my phone a few weeks ago (it keeps on freezing) – and they gave me the exact same solution. Not sure it helped though…
Hahaha I remember blowing into the nintendo games and console to fix it. I need to drag mine out again and play it…loooved to play Mario and Donkey Kong!
Beth (Well I'll Be) says
My sister and I played hours of Donkey Kong back in the day! That really was the best game ever!
Michelle says
Super Mario Brothers on the original Nintendo!!! Console I think… I must get me some crab, it’s been a while. i now have a craving for crab and chilli pasta!
Jen from The Paper Pod says
Baby showers are sorta like bridal showers- in the sense theirs games, food and presents! it’s a lot of “oohhing” and “ahhing” over the tiny little clothes!
My favorite video game will always be Tetris!
Jessi B says
Baby showers and bridal showers are fairly similar in my mind – sometimes you play silly games, watch the mom-to-be open presents, have cake and generally just enjoy the company of the fab women you are with!
Oh, and that blowing trick? Priceless. Also worked with VHS, if I remember correctly 🙂
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
That salad looks delicious! And pretty much baby showers are much like a bridal shower! Have fun! And Happy Friday!
Marcee ..... ILLINOIS says
Hahahahahahaha …. LOL (almost fell off my chair!!) …. HA! Yeah …. “Blow on It” ….. very good. You should have used that as your header. Why? Because that would be appropriate, AND ….. very-very funny.
YOU are hysterical Julie. Honestly.
The pics you title w/Sophie are something I look forward to! Honestly. I need to print some of them …. but, I don’t think they will come out okay. Ha. So cute!
The baby shower will be super-fun. It might give you and the hubs ideas!! My niece had her first little bebe this past June. There were 5 babies born into the family!! What a summer it was!!! There are still several mommies-to-be left. I’m definitely broke. HA!
What gift did you decide for bebe? Good quality swaddlers are a fantastic. There is soooo much to choose from. First-time mamas need everything. It’s all highly expensive too.
Ohgosh. That braless diva female. Ugh. She is definitely “on the make.” For something. Warn Ryan.
Julie …. keep makin us laugh. I love it! You are gorgeous/intelligent …. in every single way.
Have a fun/safe trip (drive) to Orlando!!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Mario for me!! 🙂 My parents never bought my sister and I Nintendo, but we always played when we went to the babysitter’s house after school. I loved it!
Annie says
sometimes baby showers have games as well. at the last baby shower i went to, we had a contest to see who could suck the most apple juice out of baby bottle in 1 minute! that was fun…watching a room full of 20-30 somethings chugging from a baby bottle.
my fave nintendo game was FROGGER!!!
LeeAnn says
I totally remember blowing on it!!! Favorite: mario brothers 1 🙂
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Hahaha I love Super Nintendo! My favorite game is definitely Super Mario Bros!! We just bought the Wii version, and I love it. 🙂
dana a. says
i so remember doing that with my nintendo games….good times!
baby showers are sort of fun idk. i have been to a couple and i love the socializing and eating but sometimes the games are quite silly and long. i like to play some but one baby shower i went to they just went on and on and it was just too much. i love the toilet paper game where you have to guess how big her belly is.
could just be me though:)
it is fun to watch her open the gifts, they are so cute!
have fun!
Michelle says
Omg, I don’t envy you. I’d rather be doing anything than going to a baby/bridal shower. Everyone will talk about her belly and touch it and sometimes measure it with toilet paper.
You might have to look in some diapers at melted candy bars. Then women will tell their giving birth horror stories.
Hopefully there’s alcohol and people you like. GOOD LUCK! 🙂
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
I use that Advanced App Killer on my phone too and haven’t had any problems. But if I do, now I’ll know to uninstall it.
peanutbutterfingers says
yeah, ryan uses it w/o problems, too! the woman said it only affects certain phones.
Anne @strawberryjampackedlife.com says
Just blow on it . . .that totally worked though! Could you ship some of that salad up to me? Kthanksbye.
Debbie says
hahahahaha def should have kept “just blow on it”
Corrie Anne says
Ha. Ha. Ha.
Have fun at the baby shower. I’m shocked you’ve never been. I’m sure it will be a good time. We’re road tripping 14 hours to MN. I’m nervous about sitting in the car that long, but it’ll be good qt with Kevin! <3
Kaelin says
I agree! Love “Just Blow On It”. I totally remember pulling out a video game and blowing on it. It worked! I had a Sega and I loved Sonic the Hedgehog games… and of course I had the disney sega games… lion king and aladin were my favs!!!
Sana says
The Advanced Task Killer is terribleeee!
Steph says
Good to know about the task killer! I always have trouble with my phone…I wonder if that’s the culprit…
I love your original title 🙂 The first night I met my husband, he was wearing a t-shirt with a nintendo cartridge on it which read “blow me”…just stole my heart, I tell ya 😉
Cait's Plate says
Love the avocado addition there!
I LOVED Super Nintendo! Donkey Kong, Mario’s World, Mario Kart…ALL of them. I played way more than I’m going to allow my kids to! Haha
Nathan Miller says
Running 26.2 miles for the first time this weekend…..
As for the games, way would be the ORIGINAL Nintendo…none of the Super NES you were talking about. Mario 3 I think takes the bill on this post, and your better half would agree, that TECMO Bowl for the Nintendo would be a close second.
Hillary says
Hands down, Super Mario (the original) or Track and Field—you know, the one with the pad that you had to run/jump on? Best ever!
Caroline says
My brother and I would always blow on the games before putting them in our N64! My favorite games were the Harvest Moon series, although my neighbor and I also loved playing Donkey Kong!
Lena @ Fit on the Rocks says
My junior year of college, I went out and bought a used Super Nintendo just so I could play Donkey Kong! I really wanted Yoshi’s Island, but alas, I couldn’t find it within a reasonable price haha. Also, your salad just made me want to drool.
Meg says
OMG I was beast at Nintendo! I liked to play James Bond (what was the name of that game?! I forget!) Haha you so should’ve kep t that title 😉
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
On Nintendo I was obsessed with Mario Kart (and still am on Wii now) but my true love was Sega and Sonic the Hedgehog. Weekends of my life were wasted playing that game!
Sarah says
I was thinking my tuna mixed with frozen veggies was a pretty legit lunch salad of the day until I saw this! Put’s my salad to shame! 🙂 Haha.
I used to kill it at Super Mario Bros nonstop in my little “gamer chair” (an old school floor rocker!).
