Guess who is going to be a cone head later today?
Shadow-hunting Sadie, that’s who.
(She was in serious shadow stalking mode last night and could not be distracted.)
Yes, Sadie is going to have one of those big, white cones surrounding her face late this afternoon. I dropped her off at the vet this morning and she is going to have three little lumps removed.
After speaking with the vet last Wednesday about the lumps, I wanted to get them removed (one is growing particularly fast while the other two lumps are quite small and haven’t changed much), but was hesitant to do so when we got the price quote back since the surgery is a lot more expensive than I anticipated. The vet said that the one lump that is growing appears subcutaneous (I guess this is a good thing?) and that typical cancer doesn’t really metastasize with little lumps all over the body, but removing the lumps and having them biopsied is the only way to be sure that everything is okay. He also said that many dogs develop little lumps all over their bodies all the time and that they’re often absolutely nothing.
I talked about it with Ryan and we decided to monitor the bumps closely, so I was surprised when he came up to me on Thanksgiving and said, “We need to get the lumps removed.”
“Okay,” I said, “But what makes you say this now?”
“Go talk to my grandma,” he said.
I went over to his grandma and started talking to her about our dogs. She has the most adorable little maltese but lost her precious King Charles Cavalier Spaniel earlier this year and it absolutely tore her up inside.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes and simply said, “You don’t want to lose that dog.”
Yep, that did it for me. Lumps be gone!
I’m hoping Sadie’s surgery goes smoothly (she’ll be under anesthesia which makes me nervous) and that her lumps are nothing to worry about. I just love that little girl so much. I’ll be sure to keep you guys posted!
Breakfast
After I dropped Sadie off at the vet, I popped into Starbucks to blog and order breakfast.
(Spinach wrap + Vanilla cappuccino)
While I was sipping my hot cappuccino and blogging, I looked up and saw the pastor from our church walk through the door. I felt like he was a celebrity or something and it reminded me of the times I’d see my teachers out in the community when I was younger. It was so weird to see them outside of the classroom environment and I felt the same way when I saw Pastor Tim this morning. He actually leaves the church!?
In Orlando I always saw local news anchors and sports reporters out and about. On 90 percent of my morning runs around Lake Eola, I’d see the man who reported from the court during Orlando Magic games out running, too. I felt like Buddy the Elf because I’d always think, “Paul Kennedy! I know him!”
Question of the Morning
- Have you ever seen a local celebrity out and about?
- Did you ever see one of your teachers outside of the classroom when you were a kid and immediately feel like it was the weirdest thing ever?
Though he’s definitely not just a local celebrity, I am still waiting for the day when I see John Travolta around Ocala since he lives here. I just missed running into his wife when I got a dress altered a while back. Apparently she was at the shop just five minutes before me. So close!

Dogs are priceless. Grandma is right! Good luck Sadie pup!
Khushboo says
Fingers crossed all goes well with Sadie!
Jess @ PrettyPhysicist says
I’ll definitely be thinking of you and Sadie today … its always scary when one of your furbabies goes in for surgery, but I’m sure she’ll be great!
Gabby @ Gabby's Gluten-Free says
Good luck to miss Sadie!
Our dog has the same thing – she gets bumps everywhere. We had one that was on her ear removed and tested and it turns out it’s just some sort of condition that she has and is totally benign. Apparently it can be common in some breeds (our is a pit bull). Best of luck!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
I hope everything goes well with Ms. Sadie’s surgery! She will be in my thoughts!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Poor little Sadie! I hope everything goes well today! Our dogs bring me so much joy too every single day. It’s hard to imagine life without them.
Haley @ The Saucy Apple says
Aww, good luck to Sadie! 🙂
I have NEVER spotted a celebrity. So I’m also convinced they don’t exist… haha… j/k (sorta). 😛
Amy M says
I talked with Harry Smith, CBS news anchor while I was at Central College. He is on the board of trustees….he was so nice to chat with and seemed very genuine and kind.
laurie says
Hope all goes well with Sadie!
Amanda @ Romancing the Unusual says
aww this broke my heart! I know Sadie will be fine, but I m such a worrier when it comes to my animals. Glad you listened to Grandma! You guys are in my thoughts and prayers but I’m sure Sadie will be up and running in no time flat! Keep us posted!
Jody says
My thoughts are with you, Ryan and Miss Sadie today. I have to agree with Grandma too. We had a growth removed off of our Dryfuss that was right in the middle of his forehead. It was like he was growing a little hat. Vet removed it, biopsied it and all was good. Worth every expesive dime. I actually had an appointment for our Lilly awhile back to get a tiny cyst removed from her ear and when we were at the Vet waiting for her appointment I checked it out and the darn thing fell off in the waiting room. It left a tiny bald spot and so far (figners crossed) it hasn’t come back so we got lucky with that one. All will be well with Miss Sadie. 😀
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
i can’t believe it just fell off in the waiting room. so crazy! glad you dogs were okay!
Jody says
I know and the good news is the hair has grown back. Though this whole thing reminds of friends who used to have a Whippet named Soda (rip, though not due to lumps) who used to get lumps on a regular basis and they called them her ‘Lovely Lady Lump’ and now I’m humming some BEP.
Beth says
I’ll be thinking about you and Sadie today. My Boxer had lumps removed this summer, she has a couple scars but everything went well. You made the right choice to get rid of them!
Ashley @ Life's a Shih Tzu says
I teared up reading this post…I am absolutely in LOVE with my dog and would do anything for her to maintain her health. I will be praying for Sadie, Julie!
Chelsea says
I’ll keep Sadie in my prayers, good luck girly!
Carrie @ Fitness and Frozen Grapes says
When I’m home for the holidays, I see my old teachers all the time. One time, I ran by my 5th grade science teacher and said hello, but I don’t think she recognized me. 🙁
Kristen says
1. I remember seeing my teacher at the mall when I was in 6th grade. It turns out she wore a wig to school and was not wearing it that day; I was so thrown off and completely weirded out by the experience. Haha.
2. I teared up when you talked about loving Sadie! I have been living at home between leases and move out on Sunday; every time I think about not being greeted in the morning by my family golden retriever (Joey!) I start to tear up. It’s amazing how much love you can feel for your pet.
Melissa @ Freeing Imperfections says
Aw, good for you for doing the right thing for Sadie. Isn’t it insane how expensive pet medical expenses can be? I had no idea before I got my dog… But they’re your best friend, so usually it’s worth it. I remember getting my dog back from being neutered and he was quite strange when coming off the anesthesia, but he was soon himself in no time. I’m sure Sadie will be fine 🙂
Jessie says
Grandma’s words brought a small tear to my eye! I am a sap & my dogs are my family. I don’t want to lose them either.
Hope everything goes well for Sadie and she gets the cone off soon!
Kelly says
Praying for Sadie! I know it totally sucks to have to put them through surgery but its way better to have those lumps out
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Good luck with Sadie! Its a shame that she has to go through it but its much safer for her to have those lumps removed.
Brigitt says
I hope Sadie’s surgery goes well. One of our dogs, Callie, has little lumps all over her (and has had them for years). One was cancerous and had to be removed, but most of hers just look scary. Callie’s lived comfortably and happily for a long time–even with the remaining lumps. She’s 13 now and the oldest dog her breeder has ever bred. I hope Sadie has the same luck!
Nina says
Good decision; she’s part of your family!
Jenica says
I saw Anne Hathaway once when I was riding my bike. I was a total spaz about it because I recognized her as a face I knew but couldn’t place how, so I waved and said hi. I realized about two seconds later that we were not, in fact, friends and I was just being a weirdo.
I’m sure Sadie will be fine! Definitely better to be safe than sorry with those lumps.
Nicole says
I agree with Grandma. The $$ is nothing (if you can) compared to knowing she is ok. For some, the choice is not always so easy on the financial side. But the peace of mind will be worth it.

Maria says
I hope Sadie’s surgery goes well! =)
Kristy @ Kristy's Health Revolution says
Awww, my thoughts are with poor Sadie! I’m sure it’s nothing, like the vet says, dogs get lumps all the time. Almost everyone I know who has dogs has had to get some lumps removed and they ended up being nothing.
We have a local news achor who is like a rock star in our town. He’s pretty close in age to me and my friends, so we will often see him out and end up chatting with him. Once, he came to my Sister-in-law’s annual Christmas bash and it has been a legend with our friends ever since. The Christmas party is coming up again soon and people are STILL talking about the time Tim Irr showed up!
Mia N says
I hope everything goes ok with Sadies surgery today!
I live in Owasso, OK, which is where Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood live, we see them out and about often and it is exciting each time haha!
Bailee says
You made the right call. It sounds SO cheesy, but my sister-in-law once said “You can’t put a price on life,” after she spent a ton of money trying to get her cat’s IBS under control. She is totally right.
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
“Oh, I love seeing teachers outside of school. It’s like seeing a dog walk on its hind legs.” name that movie!
Hope all goes well with Sadie! I would most likely take the same safety precaution your taking, even though it costs a lot of money you are doing the right thing!
Courtney says
Mean Girls!!! I just quoted it a few posts down! So many quotes from that movie.
Alyssa says
Hope Sadie is just fine!
I’ve heard that the Travoltas live an opposite life– sleeping during the day and awake at night– in order to avoid the public eye. I’m not 100% sure this is true, but it might be why you’ve never seen them.
Bethany @ Accidental Intentions says
I once saw the weatherman from a news station in my hometown leaving church on a Sunday morning, but that’s about it for local celebrities. I actually can’t remember running into any teachers outside of school, but my dad was a teacher when I was growing up, and I do remember running into his current/former students alllllllll the time in the grocery store. Maybe they thought I was a celebrity–that girl from the pictures on his desk, live and in the flesh! Hahaha.
Thoughts and prayers are with Sadie this morning! I truly hope everything turns out all right (and that Sadie can handle the cone of shame haha).
Sara says
I’m a teacher and hate seeing kids outside of school! It’s awkward for me too haha
K says
My dog of 13 years passed away last night. Although there was not more we could have done, I agree. You can’t put a price on your precious furball.
Good luck to Sadie!
Kelli says
Sorry about your dog passing 🙁
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
i am so, so sorry for your loss, k. i know dogs are like family. the joy they bring to a home is magical. sending lots of hugs and comfort your way. i’m so sorry.
sara says
poor sadie girl! you will feel so much better when this is done. our gsp had to get his dewclaws removed this year after getting one caught and partially tearing it out (very gross). i was an emotional wreck with him being in surgery and felt so bad for him———but he paid us back by eating his bandages off daily (yep, chewed off his cone too) and making our life hell for a solid week. gotta love those hyper and VERY determined pups! i have a feeling sadie will bounce back in no time! 🙂
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
oh gosh, i can see sadie being just like this! she’s a crazy one. 🙂

I live in nashville and get to see and “hang out” with Keith urban weekly!!! I nanny for two girls and his daughter is in their gymnastics class so I get to sit next to him in the lobby durring class!!!!! We’ve only said hi to each other so far but it is fabulous to just sit there and think wow Keith urban is sitting casually right next to me…
Laura says
That’s really cute that he watches his girls’ gymnastics class! I’ve seen him before too because I used to live in Nashville – I saw him and Nicole Kidman at the movies and I started freaking out being like “There is a Nicole Kidman movie playing at this theater and SHE IS HERE.” Clearly I do not keep it cool.

awesome!

Poor Sadie!! Praying over here that everything goes well with her surgery. I’m sure she’ll be fine!
Annette says
I hope all goes well with Sadie. Give her a big hug from my dogs Loki, Nani and me when she gets home.
Megan says
Fingers crossed for Sadie! I’m sure she will be just fine! I lost my childhood dog last January while I was away in college, and it broke my heart!! I’m glad Ryan’s grandma was able to convince you guys! Dogs really are priceless:)
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
My dogs send Sadie good vibes and wishes!! 🙂
Megan @ The Running Doc says
I hope everything goes smoothly with Sadie’s surgery today and make sure you take photos of her with the cone. 🙂 I remember how nervous I was when my girl had to go under anesthesia to get spayed but everything ended up just fine. Those vets know what they’re doing so no need to worry too much.
Maddie says
I used to work in the same building as Channel 7 News in Boston. I didn’t work for the station, but daily I shared an elevator or stairwell or was in line for lunch with the newscasters. And you know what? It NEVER GOT OLD. I always got excited to see them. Total Buddy the Elf moments pretty much every day 🙂
And good luck to Sadie today!!
Angela says
You are so adorable! It’s refreshing to read about fitness and eating healthy from someone who seems so genuine and kind. Keep up the good work lady 🙂
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
this was such a nice comment. thank you, angela!
Lindsey says
I used to babysit for one of our local news anchor’s boys. She would let me in on the little secrets of things. Like when the weather guy was standing out in a storm looking like the wind blew him around. In reality, he did it to himself for more impact!
TorontoRunner says
Aw! I hope everything goes OK with your doggie!
Jessa says
We have two vizslas currently, and we’ve had two in the past..4 total (some people think we are nuts 🙂 ) 2 of the 4 have had lumps as well..one is still a puppy right now so we’re not sure about him. Our vet said it is very common for the breed, but also many dogs get them but you can’t see with all of their hair. Praying for Sadie!!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
that makes me feel better. thanks for sharing, jessa! and yaaaay for vizslas!
Katie says
Good luck to Miss Sadie! Our family dog, Corky, gets fatty tumors, we’ve had a few removed but not that he’s 14 the vet doesn’t want to risk him going under the anesthesia with his age, he has a big one currently on his chest wall but it doesn’t seem to bug him too much.
It’s also a good idea to get them removed so that they don’t get tore open if the dogs are active and run around in long grass or around stick. Corky was used for duck hunting when he was younger so my parents always got them removed quickly because if they get ripped open it can be very bad.
I’m sure Miss Sadie will back to be hunting shadows in no time!
Sara says
I guess he’s not just a local celebrity, but I lived in Athens, GA for several years and managed to spot Michael Stipe a couple of times!
Nicole says
I wish the best for Sadie! It’s a scary time but everything will be okay 🙂
Lauren B. says
Living in Santa Barbara, Ca, we have lots of celebs that live here. I have seen Kathy Ireland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Doc” from Back to the Future, and Kenny G among others. I am still waiting to see Oprah or Drew Barrymore or Steve Martin, where I will totally geek out.
Lauren B. says
…and big prayers going out for Sadie this morning. I am sure she will be fine!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Did you say hi to your pastor?! Haha I would have been too intimidated if he didn’t recognize me! And poor sadie! I hope the lumps are nothing so if the show up in the future you won’t have to pay to have them removed, but I totally understand doing it, I couldn’t imagine losing a dog especially so young!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
i didn’t – i felt so creepy. i just texted ryan and stared at him like a goober.
