Guess who is going to be a cone head later today?
Shadow-hunting Sadie, that’s who.
(She was in serious shadow stalking mode last night and could not be distracted.)
Yes, Sadie is going to have one of those big, white cones surrounding her face late this afternoon. I dropped her off at the vet this morning and she is going to have three little lumps removed.
After speaking with the vet last Wednesday about the lumps, I wanted to get them removed (one is growing particularly fast while the other two lumps are quite small and haven’t changed much), but was hesitant to do so when we got the price quote back since the surgery is a lot more expensive than I anticipated. The vet said that the one lump that is growing appears subcutaneous (I guess this is a good thing?) and that typical cancer doesn’t really metastasize with little lumps all over the body, but removing the lumps and having them biopsied is the only way to be sure that everything is okay. He also said that many dogs develop little lumps all over their bodies all the time and that they’re often absolutely nothing.
I talked about it with Ryan and we decided to monitor the bumps closely, so I was surprised when he came up to me on Thanksgiving and said, “We need to get the lumps removed.”
“Okay,” I said, “But what makes you say this now?”
“Go talk to my grandma,” he said.
I went over to his grandma and started talking to her about our dogs. She has the most adorable little maltese but lost her precious King Charles Cavalier Spaniel earlier this year and it absolutely tore her up inside.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes and simply said, “You don’t want to lose that dog.”
Yep, that did it for me. Lumps be gone!
I’m hoping Sadie’s surgery goes smoothly (she’ll be under anesthesia which makes me nervous) and that her lumps are nothing to worry about. I just love that little girl so much. I’ll be sure to keep you guys posted!
Breakfast
After I dropped Sadie off at the vet, I popped into Starbucks to blog and order breakfast.
(Spinach wrap + Vanilla cappuccino)
While I was sipping my hot cappuccino and blogging, I looked up and saw the pastor from our church walk through the door. I felt like he was a celebrity or something and it reminded me of the times I’d see my teachers out in the community when I was younger. It was so weird to see them outside of the classroom environment and I felt the same way when I saw Pastor Tim this morning. He actually leaves the church!?
In Orlando I always saw local news anchors and sports reporters out and about. On 90 percent of my morning runs around Lake Eola, I’d see the man who reported from the court during Orlando Magic games out running, too. I felt like Buddy the Elf because I’d always think, “Paul Kennedy! I know him!”
Question of the Morning
- Have you ever seen a local celebrity out and about?
- Did you ever see one of your teachers outside of the classroom when you were a kid and immediately feel like it was the weirdest thing ever?
Though he’s definitely not just a local celebrity, I am still waiting for the day when I see John Travolta around Ocala since he lives here. I just missed running into his wife when I got a dress altered a while back. Apparently she was at the shop just five minutes before me. So close!
Nicole says
Hope the surgery goes well. Dogs are loopy coming out of anesthesia so don’t be alarmed if she sleeps more than usual.
Shanna, like Banana says
Oh poor Sadie!
Are you sure they have to be removed? My cat would get these bumps on his back (sometimes 3 at once) and the vet was able to draw some fluid from some and biopsy them that way (extremely cheap) and found out they were all the subcutaneous ‘cysts’ (basically just an oil build up). Maybe you could check before you actually do the surgery?
Mrs Type A says
Good luck, Ms. Sadie! I grew up in Wilmington, DE and people would see Joe Biden around quite a lot. I don’t think I ever saw him, but my dad saw him in Lowe’s one time.
Amanda @ Eat More Rabbit Food says
Hope Surgery goes well!!
I live in Springfield MO so I have seen Brad Pitt at the mall. It’s strange, but around here people aren’t very impressed when you tell them that. One of my best friend’s mom was in class with him in high school. No big 😉
Mrs Type A says
Oh and once I was on a plane with Tracy Morgan. He was clearly drunk and kept yelling “we’re going to Baton Rouggeeeeeee!” It was very odd!
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
Hope Sadie’s surgery goes well!
I totally feel the same about running into famous or semi famous people.. When I lived in NYC, I used to run into celebs all the time it seems like. In DC now, though, it’s always a Congressman or politician though haha.
Pia says
Aww poor Sadie! Hope everything goes well!
Courtney says
Your thoughts about teachers outside of class reminded me of that quote from “Mean Girls”, – “Seeing a teacher outside of class is like watching a dog walk on its hind legs”.
Also sending lots of love to baby sadie!
Kat says
Great decision on getting them removed! I have a 14 year old Sheltie whom I love to death, and my vet calls him a “lypoma factory”. He has tons of fatty little lumps that pop up, but because cancer can run in them we make a point of getting them biopsied and removed. You never know what it could be until you find out. Although some of them have come back, I never regret having them removed. The older he’s gotten the more comfortable he is as a result! Sadie will do great 🙂
Yellow Haired Girl says
Now I want to do nothing but watch Elf 😉 I hope surgery goes well!
Molly @ Just Your Average Athlete says
Thinking positive thoughts for you, Ryan and Sadie!! I’m sure you’ll have your spunky, cuddly girl back in no time 🙂 I know how scary it is when something is wrong with your pet, but it sounds like you’re doing everything you should be!
Beccalou says
Hey Julie!
I am a veterinarian and I just wanted to assure you that you are DEFINITELY doing the right thing by having those lumps removed. Just knowing that everything is benign is worth the price of anesthesia, surgery and biopsy. Sadie will thank you later! …or maybe she won’t, but it’s still the best thing for her crazy self!
You are a super duper doggie-mama. Can’t wait to see some conehead Sadie pics. Too bad it’s past Halloween…you could have dressed her up as a martini 😉
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
thank you SO much for commenting, beccalou. this makes me feel better!!
Stephanie says
Good luck with Sadie! My dog got put under a while back and when dogs wake up from being under, they remain, well, high for a number of hours. You might have yourself a lazy, cuddly and very whiny Sadie later tonight because she it’s entirely possible she’ll spend the night tripping out. But it’s totally normal, so don’t freak out like I sort of did.
Best of luck with her today! Hope she recovers quick!
sarah k @ the pajama chef says
my dog (a Weimaraner) growing up had lumps on her face and they were always nothing. hope sadie is okay!
i live in bloomington, IN and am always on the lookout for john mellencamp & meg ryan, since he lives just outside of town. i know where his house is (but so does everyone here, haha). i’ve never seen them, but occasionally see facebook updates who see them locally. it’s my goal to see them before we move!
Rachel says
aww def keep us posted! I hope Sadie’s surgery goes smoothly 🙂 It’s so hard to think that there might be something wrong with a pet. I lost 2 of mine to cancer, but by the time we found the lumps it was too late :/ I agree with Ryan’s Grandma, you don’t want to lose her. But I’m sure she’ll be fine 🙂 xx
Samantha says
Oh, good luck to Sadie. I know it is stressful to have any sign of aging or potential illness on our beloved dogs. I hear you on the surgery. I usually try and leave the bumps alone if I can, but I had a senior guy that had one “burst.” Yes, awesome as it sounds. I could never get it entirely healed and once we did the surgery I wish I had never waited. He was MUCH older than Sadie was a shaky past so he struggled a bit, but still came out fine.
By the way, cones are cheaper and this is just even more funny to look at, but it was the best investment I could have done for my pup after surgery:

Something to keep in mind. If we lived near each other I would just loan you mine.
Thinking good thoughts for her.

Good luck, Sadie!
Is Sadie a shadow chaser?! My boxer, Kemah, is a HUGE shadow chaser. Every time we take her to the lake crowds gather around the watch her chase their shadows, the wave’s “shadows”, their hands going in circles making her go in circles, etc. She’s so active and chasing shadows ALL the time that we can’t get her to gain any weight! Skinny little girl.
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
yes! she is obsessed with shadows and reflections. so goofy! apparently she and kemah would be best buds!
Amanda @ .running with spoons. says
Awwr hope everything goes okay for Sadie, and for you as well! I know how stressful it can be to have your puppy undergoing anything major at the vet. Think good thoughts! I never saw any of my teachers outside the classroom when I was a kid, but one of my profs from college hits up the same Starbucks as me so I see him every once in a while, and it still feels pretty weird. Teachers aren’t supposed to be real people 😛
Emily @ Emily Eats and Runs says
First of all, best of luck to Sadie for a speedy recovery!
As for celebrity sightings- I live in NYC, so I see celebrities out and about quite a bit. I always get starstruck though! I’ve seen Jennifer Garner, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Josh Hartnett around!
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
Poor Sadie!! Extra treats for her this week! My dog had to get surgery on his leg when he was just a pup because he “jumped out of the tub” at the groomers, which I don’t believe!!! I believe that she DROPPED HIM! It was a terrible expereience, but he is completely fine now and we didn’t pay for ANY of the surgery. I sweat the owners and the vet probably thought I was crazy the way I was talking to them! Anyway moral of the story, you are doing the right thing!
Julie says
Hope all goes well for Sadie!!
Dani @ Run Daniella Run says
Everything will go great for Sadie! I lost my dog to cancer 2 years ago, he was my sweet boy and only 11 years old. No lumps no signs of anything actually so good for you for being proactive, you won’t regret it!

I’d rather be safe then sorry – Hope Sadie is recovering well!
Fizz @ fizzsbizz says
Sending big love to Sadie today! I know what you mean about the $$$ but it’s just so worth it to have your best dog buddy around and healthy.
She’s definitely not a local celebrity but I was just so excited about this that I had to share. I saw Lauren Graham at the airport on my way to NY for thanksgiving and I just about died. With a (not so) mild obsession with Gilmore Girls, I thought I was going to have a heart attack. Something I learned about myself – I do not act ‘cool’ when I see celebrities! Doh!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
so cool!! i would be excited, too!
Claire @ Keeping Up With Claire says
Awwww, sending thoughts & prayers to you guys for Sadie’s surgery! You guys are doing the right thing. It’s always scary but it’ll be over before you know it!
When I used to work at ESPN, I used to work with celebrities ALL the time. Most of them were athletes, but occasionally bigshot celebs would come in, like Emeril. I walked around saying BAM! all day long after I met him. He is the coolest!
Danica @ It's Progression says
I hope Sadie’s surgery went well!!
I AM a teacher so when I see my students outside of school they always crack me up–I teach preschoolers too so they’re just amazed (and confused) that I’m somewhere other than at school 🙂
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
awww good thing you guys found out early and taking care of this now! I have a huge feeling Sadie will be just a-okay 😀
And that’s so funny! It seems that it’s common for people to think that pastors never leave church. My husband’s a pastor and in a way, seeing him do everyday things and not be perfect, and he always admits that, has gotten me used to thinking that all pastors are plainly human 😛 lol. But I have to admit, a long time ago I used to think “omgsh that’s the pastor of so and so church!” and get all shy.

Hope everything goes well with Sadie 🙂

as a third grade teacher, i think itz hilarious when kids see me outside of the classroom and in the “real world!” itz so out of context to them… wait, i don’t live at school?! prayers for sadie today!

Good luck, Sadie!! My doggy had a similar procedure just a couple of months ago and it was so hard to leave her at the vet that morning, but everything turned out just fine and by the end of her time with the cone, she was using it as more of a bulldozer than any means of protection. I’m sure she could give Sadie some tips. 😉 Good for you for being proactive! Love your blog!
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Good luck to Sadie & the vet!! Best wishes!
It’s always funny to see my gym people outside the gym….they;re like, wait, you don’t live at the gym?! HAHA.

Good luck Sadie!!! Hope all goes well. It’s good you’re getting it taken care of. One of my PR clients is a giant network of veterinary clinics, and anesthesia has come a long way and is usually safe — I’m sure she’ll be great 🙂
Rachel Boller - Busy Mama says
I’m glad you’re taking Sadie in. She’ll be okay. Sending positive thoughts your way!
I remember running into one of my college professors years later at a Subway and thinking it was incredibly strange! It wasn’t just weird seeing him outside of campus but also the fact that he EATS?!? I mean duh, of course he eats but for whatever reason, this didn’t jibe with my image of him as a professor. Go figure!
Zoe says
Poor lil Sadie. I’m sure she will be just fine, my dogs always had lumps and bumps, but I commend your attentiveness! Stay strong and don’t get too worried because I’m thinking lots of positive thoughts for her 🙂

Hugs and warm wishes for a speedy recovery for Miss Sadie! She will be up and around in no time! The surgery is nothing, she may be more upset by the “Cone of Shame”. 🙂

I hope everything works out okay with Sadie! I am praying for you guys today!

When I was younger and saw my teachers outside of school, I immediately thought I had to be on my very best behavior. I usually got really quiet and felt the need to walk in a straight line with my hands nicely placed behind my back.. So silly! As if I was being graded at the market!
Sara @ fitcupcaker.com says
Poor Sadie. My dog Lily had to wear a cone when she got part of her ear bit off! 🙁 So sad. When I was in Chicago though I saw Vince Vaughn!

sending good vibes for Sadie!! It’s so scary when your dog has to get anything done!! Sending lots of <3 Sadie's way!!

Feel better Sadie!!
I work for Disney in Burbank, CA and I used to live in Malibu. Still… I get so excited when I see a celebrity. Honestly, I just get really excited when you tweet me back!
My favorite “local” celebrity sighting was when I lived in Northern California and I walked down the street next to Steve Jobs. It was after school one day, and he had the newest ipod shuffle thing around his neck. I asked him about it, and he was pretty nice. I was excited for WEEKS!

Praying for a speedy recovery for Sadie! 🙂
I used to be an elementary school teacher and always got a kick out of seeing my students out and about. You could just tell from their reaction how amazing it was to see me! I miss that!

Awww that almost made me tear up! Absolutely get them removed! Good luck to little sadie!

Good luck, Sadie!
Our dog has a couple lumps on his belly, but the vet didn’t seem to concerned. She said they felt like fatty deposits on his skin, which one actually drained itself (*shudders*), so she wasn’t worried. They also don’t seem to be bothering him. The only thing that bothers me is my know-it-all cousin always says that he probably has cancer and is going to die. Yeah…When she graduates from Veterinary School, I’ll let her be the judge, but seeing as how she’s not even IN school for anything right now, I’ll let the REAL Vet be the judge.
I believe Sadie will be fine, and will be completely ready to be spoiled by her parents when she gets home. 🙂
Melissa says
Prayers for your little Sadie…..and she will so love all the extra TLC 🙂
Ali @ WHOLEistically Fit says
My best wishes for Sadie. I hope everything is okay and these lumps turn out to be nothing. Give her a hug for me. 🙂 As for celebrities, since I live in LA, celebrity sightings are a dime-a-dozen. Airports in the area seem to be teeming with celebs. My husband and I spotted Elle Fanning and Macy Gray one day going through customs at LAX. We also saw the drummer of Green Day at the airport in the O.C. My husband is a HUGE fan and was very star-struck. hehe. And, as if that isn’t enough, we recently ran into Monica Potter (who plays Kristina Braverman in Parenthood) at our local Trader Joe’s. We love that show and are huge fans so we struck up a little conversation. 😀

I just started reading your blog, but I got caught up on some of your Sadie posts because I love dogs. I have a lab/pit mix named Raven and she’s like a child to me. I couldn’t imagine losing her, so my heart goes out to you. I hope her surgery goes well and the lumps are nothing to worry about!!

Hi Julie – I read a lot but don’t comment all that often – I love your blog!! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for Sadie – my dog had a very similar type of situation – I had her first few bumps removed and tested and they were nothing – so I hope the same for Sadie!! Thinking of you guys!

Hi Julie:
I love reading your blog. It’s fun, informative, and I LOVE the stories about Sadie. I’m a huge dog lover myself with 3 dogs. I had a similar situation with one of my pugs. He had a lump by his hind leg that kept changing. I finally had the vet remove it. It’s always scary when something is wrong with you pups. Hope all goes well with Sadie!
julie @ peanut butter fingers says
agreed! glad your little pug was okay. they are such adorabe dogs!

I would do the same thing…a million times over. I love my pups. Prayers lifted up for Sadie!

You’re doing the right thing by taking your dog to have the surgery! My family’s golden is eleven now, but a few years ago she produced a few massive tumors near her neck. After a pricey surgery turns out they were just fatty tumors, but we were so thankful! I couldn’t imagine life without her!
