This morning I awoke to a swift kick in the stomach.
Allow me to paint you a little picture. The alarm went off at 5:05 a.m. and Ryan got out of bed first as he normally does and headed into the bathroom. I remained in bed, as I normally do, trying to soak up another five minutes of sleep. My sweet dog lay facing me, deep in sleep, breathing in and out, looking as innocent and adorable as ever.
And then it happened.
Three kicks in the gut courtesy of the nut job herself.
Her kicks were unintentional (I think), but they did the trick and got me moving.
I made sure to start my day by ridding Sadie’s eyes of dog eye boogers to get her back and annoy her. I win!
Workout
My workout was less exciting than the ruckus that occurred in my bed this morning, but it was still a good one.
Ryan and I began by doing 20 minutes of cardio on the elliptical. We noticed, for the third day in a row, that our gym was blasting Britney Spears over the speakers. Though I love Britney, Ryan and I both said we’d like to hear a little more of our boy, Biebs. Never Say Never…
After peddling away on the elliptical, I headed into BodyPump and felt the burn for a good 50 minutes.
Post workout, I took the stomach-kicker on a walk around the lake near our apartment before heading home for breakfast.
Breakfast
All I am seeing on the local Orlando news (besides the Casey Anthony trial – crazy!!!) is “dangerously high temperatures.” It was already close to 80 degrees when I took Sadie on a walk, which means that once the sun is really blazing it’s going to be a scorcher.
The solution to beating the heat? One guess…
Oh yes, the smoothie bowl.
Chocolate Chia Seed Smoothie
- 1 1/2 c. almond milk
- 1 scoop chocolate protein powder
- 1 c. frozen strawberries
- 1/2 frozen banana
- 1 tbsp. cocoa powder
- 1 tsp. xanthan gum
- 1 tbsp. chia seeds (plus more for garnish)
- 1 large handful fresh spinach
And now I’m actually a little chilly! It’s amazing how food or drinks can totally heat you up or cool you down.
Time to set up a giveaway for this afternoon. I think it’s one that will appeal to those of you who love fashion and fitness. See ya around lunchtime!
P.S. Ass grass is REAL! Proof that it happens to dogs other than Sadie may be seen on Gina’s blog.
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
Your Sadie captions CRACK me up. i could read a whole post of Sadie. Has she considered starting a blog, too? 😉
Tichina says
I’m with Brittney on this one, I want a Sadie 🙂
Meg says
HAHAHA oh my gosh that story + Sadie’s picture may or may not have caused me to leak in my undies a bit. WOOPS.
Enjoy your (hot as bawls!) morning! Stay cool 🙂
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
LOL Sadie’s face is ridiculous! I think I need to eat at least 30 smoothies to stay cool today…
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
LOL I love that photo of Sadie in your bed! I agree with you on the tunes – a little more Biebs would be my preference too! 😉
Jamie aka "Sometimes Healthy" Girl says
Awww Sadie is so precious – she’s such a little ball of energy! I love how I feel like I completely know and understand your dog’s personality through your amazing writing 🙂 I want to beg my work for a vitamix here so that I can make your smoothies after every time i read about them at work.
Hope says
I love the picture of Sadie! So cute! 😉 That smoothie looks great for a hot muggy day like today! Keep cool! Can’t wait to see your giveaway! 🙂
Jamie says
UGH I hear ya, it’s already 80 in VA Beach, too! So hot for 9AM. I’m jealous you already got your workout in- my gym is going to be an inferno.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Haha, thanks for the shout out Julie! That caption with Sadie in bed is hysterical. I think our dogs would be bff in real life 😉
Sylvia @ Frolic Through Life says
Its not too hot in NYC but we will have severe rain for the next three days. The weather this summer seems to be a little more wonky than usual.
Natalie @ Will Jog For Food says
I was sweating when I took my dog for a walk at 7:30 this morning! ugh
I wish I could wake up at 5:00 am so I can get some things done! But I feel like I NEED to sleep past 6:30, I am so not a morning person.
Laura @ Laura Lite says
Ahhhh – you’re going to grow a Chia Pet in your belly! Remember those? 🙂
Faith @ lovelyascharged says
Hahahaha, Haley does the same stinkin thing! Except she sleeps pretty much on top of me, so I usually get the paw to the face. I think our puppies are twins…
Jordan P @ food, sweat, and beers says
Oh Sadie, not your best angle, but quality kicks to get the day started! At least she hasn’t moved to punches yet (be scared of the day that happens!)
Jessica Huffman says
I have great news for you that I MUST share. I also add fresh spinach to my smoothie bowls (and eat them with a spoon), but this morning I didn’t have fresh spinach so I had this idea to add frozen spinach.
BEST.
IDEA.
EVER!
First of all, it tasted fantastic. Just like fresh spinach you couldn’t taste it, but it added additional texture. (It also made it more green, but I didn’t mind) Not only that, but It is cheaper and since it is frozen, it adds as another “cool” factor in the smoothie!
Elizabeth says
Girl be careful with too many planned 5 a.m. Mornings. !!! Wait til you have kids! E
Dana says
Yup! Regular occurence with my 20lb (but long legged) cavalier king charles spaniel. When she’s awake and just stretching, I say to her “you’re kicking me again.” When she’s asleep and gives me a swift kick I joke that it’s like living with a donkey.
Carrie says
oooophhh oh Sadie!.. lovely workout! im so so so impressed u can get up at 5…. like WOWZA!
Shannon says
Even though its cold and raining where I live, after seeing your smoothie bowl I’m really starting to want one too =)
Your smoothie bowls always look SO YUMMY! =D
Julie the smoothie bowl queen! =)
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
chi chi chi chia!! Awesome smoothie. I gave you a shout out on my blog today 🙂
Lee @ in the pink of condition says
Awww Sadie is so cute, but very naughty! I love the pic with the guilty face, she’s like “Mama I could do no wrong!” Julie, you really need to go to Youtube and search for ‘guilty dog’. I would post the link, but it might send the comment to your spam folder.
peanutbutterfingers says
I am obsessed with that video!!!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Hmm biebs would make any workout go by faster! haha. I am excited to hear about the giveaway!!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
Bahahaha! That picture of Sadie (aka: the stomach kicker) in bed made me giggle out loud…she looks HILARIOUS! 😀 SO, so funny.
I know, dude, as soon as I sip a cold drink I’m shivering like an eskimo, the effect is always the same. I just had some fizzy freezing water and have had to put a sweatwhirt on. brrr…!! Lucky you with the heat wave, it’s been literally POURING with rain all day here in England! But the sun is coming out now, yay!
Yuor smoothie bowls are making me want to break out the blender, big time. I’ll just have to put on some extra layers in preparation 😉 xyx
Gen says
hahaha Sadie is adorable!!! If we don’t put our cat outside during the night, he’ll try to wake us up in the morning by whacking his head on the bedroom door!!
courtney @ cupcakedynamite says
“but why would you want five more minutes of sleep?!” – sadie
Erin @ Naturally Addicted says
haha, I know the feeling. Dogs do not understand the concept of personal space 🙂 I love it! It’s sweltering here as well… smoothies are my only go-to right now to deal!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
I seem to want cold/frozen drinks when I am already cold…. I hate when I do that!
Also, that looks VERY yummy for a morning like yours!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
In the summer I have such a hard time staying a good temperature. I get really hot outside and then freeze in air conditioning. Such a princess, I know 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
Now that will get you up! When my kitties try and lick my face, I can usually giggle under the sheets for a few minutes to put off the morning. It’s not as intense as belly kicks.
ellen says
LOL is all i can say this REALLY made my day and made me smile from ear to ear !
I think ur blg is truley my favourite!
xx
peanutbutterfingers says
Thank you so much! You made me smile!
Holly says
Oh my gosh, I am addicted to watching the trial. I can’t believe how crazy it’s getting down at the court house- with those people fighting for tickets! Yikes!
I started watching the first week & that was it…I’m hooked!!
LizAshlee says
I just finished a delicious strawberry rhubarb green smoothie for breakfast and I am FREEZING!!! I love smoothies but they always make me SO cold!
The boy changed my nickname from BQ, the blog queen to BQ, the blanket queen bc I have been wrapping myself in a blanket to enjoy my drink! 🙂
Danielle Spellman(Squirrel Snackin') says
Your pictures of Sadie every day might just make my mornings a little brighter 🙂 Funniest expressions ever!
Khushboo says
The last time i had a smoothie for breakfast, i was freezing all day! That could also do with the fact that my office blasts the air con to the point where i feel that i’m working in an ice box!
Sarah @ TheFunStartsHere says
Julie I feel you on both counts! South Carolina has seriously become the Devils Armpit this year, the heat index was 115! And there is absolutely no such thing as a nap in my house with an 80lb ball of energy. I always get the sad face, “don’t you want to take me outside to play?!” Haha
Mary says
Julie, My friend buys these wipes from the pet store that are specifically for wiping the “boogers” from your dog’s eyes. She says they are very gentle and work great. Keep cool!!
Monika @ Powered by Paprika says
Chiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says

The Teenage Taste says
The captions below Sadie’s pictures crack me up! Seriously, I LOVE them!
Stay cool, Julie! It’s supposed to reach 100 degrees near me too! I need a smoothie and some fro-yo. 😉
Kelli says
Not to belittle the heat warning (I lived in Orlando for a year, I know the humidity’s a killer), but it’s going to be 114 here in Phoenix today! I got up at five just so I could get a run in before it hit 90 🙁
peanutbutterfingers says
114 should be illegal.
Kelli says
It really should 🙂 Our highs for the week are all upwards of 105!
Cait's Plate says
Ahaahaha – that Sadie picture is too cute!
That smoothie in a bowl looks so delicious. I really have to start recreating these someday! They always look so good!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Omg how do you take such fantastic pictures of Sadie? You always capture such great moments! And ohh that chia seed smoothie sounds amazing! I think I might make it tonight! It was so, so hot today too when I was getting ready that I was really wishing I had time to make a smoothie!
Amber K says
Oh my gosh, I’m so glad I don’t live down there! It got to 85 in my apartment yesterday and I was feeling the affects of heatstroke. I was just sitting around sipping water and I still felt like I was going to throw up. I actually had to take a cold shower and then just lay there for awhile before getting dressed. I HATE summer weather.
Cait @ UrbanFencepost says
That smoothie looks delicious, but cold! My office is so cold I still order hot drinks from Starbucks. I would love to have an iced coffee or frappuchino without freezing my butt off!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Oh that smoothie looks awesome!!
Krissie J says
LOL ass grass. I am sure when we eventually get a dog I will experience this hysterical phenomenon and promptly have the bf take care of it. 😉
Hayley @ hayley daily says
Gosh, that poor Sadie…you should really be turned in for animal abuse he way you make her sleep in such a tiny, uncomfortable space like that. Sheesh!
🙂
Joelle (On A Pink Typewriter) says
I think it’s adorable that you and Ryan go to the gym together every morning! My boyfriend does Cross Fit most of the time, which I’m currently too terrified by to join in w him..
Shayla says
Sadie is too cute, love her! Btw Julie, how do you make your smoothies so darn thick and delicious looking?! I tried the xantham gum which makes it thick but then it starts to get bubbly and foamy, does this happen to you? Maybe I should try adding the chia seeds….?? Thanks!
Marissa says
Haha, my dog does that to me all the time! He must have extremely vivid dreams… the bad part is, he enjoys sleeping on my PILLOW… there’s been so many times when I’ve bolted awake in the middle in night, dazed and confused after a blow to the head, lol!
Danielle says
Mine sleeps on my pillow occasionally. It drives me nuts when I try to switch sides and I end up getting my hair yanked.
Danielle says
My Oliver is a kicker too. The stomach and chest ones always hurt the most. It’s a bit hard to be mad at that cute face. But it’s never fun for sure.
I made my hubby a smoothie yesterday, our hottest day yet, and he really liked it. I’m getting good making these.
