I thought a blog post about Thanksgiving and the way it looks in each of our houses might be an interesting topic. I’m proposing a few Thanksgiving-centered questions I’d love for you guys to answer and will answer them myself below. Hooray for the holiday season!
What Does Thanksgiving Look Like For You?
- When it comes to Thanksgiving food, do you stick to the same tried-and-true beloved recipes or experiment and try new things every year?
We are all about tradition in our house and love to stick to a handful of family favorite recipes every year. I say this in one breath but my ideal Thanksgiving feast menu has expanded quite a bit ever since I met and married Ryan and was introduced to some of his family’s favorite recipes that quickly became favorites of mine as well.
Growing up, my family’s Thanksgiving always included turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce, peas, fresh rolls and my mother’s stuffing. I’m 99 percent sure my mom didn’t follow a single recipe when she made our Thanksgiving feast, though she was kind enough to write down the steps and measure the ingredients for her stuffing at my request since I wanted the ability to recreate it for years to come. When Ryan and I began dating and I experienced Thanksgiving with his family, I was introduced to his mom’s pineapple soufflé and his grandmother’s glazed carrots, two dishes that have since become a must-have on Thanksgiving for the Fagan family.
Ever since we started hosting Friendsgiving every year and now that we are hosting Thanksgiving as well, I almost always try a new recipe as well. This lead me to discover Cooking Light’s Sweet Potato Casserole several years ago which is, hands down, the best sweet potato casserole I’ve made to date and now another staple in our Thanksgiving feast. It’s sweet but the sugar doesn’t overpower the deliciously creamy sweet potato flavor and there are just enough nuts and marshmallows to make it feel like a holiday treat.
Though we have a bunch of favorite recipes I won’t stray from on Thanksgiving, there are still a few dishes out there I have yet to perfect and find a Thanksgiving-worthy recipe for, including mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. I typically make the pumpkin pie recipe on the back of the Libby’s pumpkin can which is admittedly delicious but not knock-your-socks-off amazing. I’ve had bad luck with most mashed potato recipes out there (even ones with great reviews) and often find them much to bland. If you have any favorites, please let me know!
- Do you always serve turkey or do you also feature another kind of meat? Do you serve a vegetarian Thanksgiving?
Turkey is a staple for us but Ryan’s family also often has a Honey Baked Ham as part of the spread during their Thanksgiving feast which I love!
- Are there any typical Thanksgiving dishes you cannot stand?
I think green bean casserole is so, so gross. I never touch it if it’s served on Thanksgiving or another holiday. Bleh!
- What desserts do you make for Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving dessert in our house always features pumpkin pie but typically includes other sweet treats as well. Desserts in past years have varied from apple pie (I love Jessica’s Cider Bourbon Apple Pie) and pecan pie to a rather complicated pumpkin mousse and a frozen pumpkin custard pie. My family will also often make the Famous Wafers Chocolate Refrigerator Roll which I absolutely adore since I can never get enough homemade whipped cream in my life.
- Is your family into special Thanksgiving drinks? Do you have a specific cocktail, punch, sangria or mulled wine recipe you love?
Mulled wine all the way over here!! Ina Garten’s mulled wine recipe is the best and the one I make every year.
- Do you have any other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving?
For a while there we were running in a Turkey Trot race every Thanksgiving morning in Sarasota when we were staying with Ryan’s family and it was my favorite way to kick off the day! I’m already scouting out local turkey trots in our area to possibly make our return to the race this year. As for other traditions, we don’t have a ton other than talking about what we’re all thankful for at the dinner table. (Christmas, on the other hand, is FULL of traditions for my family!) I’d love to start some new Thanksgiving traditions with our family as Chase gets older, so if you have any traditions you look forward to every year in your family, I’d love to hear them!
Questions of the Day
Now it’s your turn… Pick a few (or all) of the below questions and tell me a little bit about what Thanksgiving looks like for you!
- When it comes to Thanksgiving food, do you stick to the same tried-and-true beloved recipes or experiment and try new things every year?

What a fun post!!! Your Thanksgiving sounds perfect!! Do you host Friendsgiving the weekend before?! Busy, but so fun!!
Growing up in AZ, we spent our Thanksgiving with family friends about two hours away. It was SO FUN!!! My mom would bring a few dishes and we’d hang out all day, then usually stay the weekend for Black Friday shopping and cutting down our Christmas tree!
Now, we live in NC all by ourselves, haha (me, my husband and our three daughters!). No one travels because AZ to NC over the holidays is just too long. In past years, my husband and I have gone all-out for cooking just for our fam and it’s been fun!!! This year, however, we actually ordered our meal from The Fresh Market! They had a sampling event last weekend and the food was SO GOOD!! We figured, meh! The kids are little and cooking can be challenging, why not?! I plan on making a pumpkin pie and an apple pie, though!!
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!!! 🙂

Nicole @ Bento Momentos says
It really depends on who we’re spending Thanksgiving with that year and our work schedules (a lot of my family members work at hospitals and have to work on the holiday). Some years it’s Boston Market.. some years Chinese food… some years homemade turkey with all the fixin’s. 🙂
Lauren C. says
Try the Pioneer Woman’s mashed potato recipe! It’s not healthy (a block of cream cheese and two sticks of butter?), but so yummy!
I am so sad you don’t like green bean casserole- it’s my absolute favorite! One year at thanksgiving, I got a huge helping and sat down and took a huge bite. It was definitely not green bean casserole, but my grandmother’s oyster casserole. Blech. I always looked to make sure I saw green beans after that!
Melissa says
I was just going to post this – make pioneer woman’s mashed potatoes! Really you can’t go wrong with any of her recipes that I’ve tried (and I’ve tried a lot!)
Julie says
I’ve actually made that recipe before but I think my problem was that I tried to make it ahead of time and then reheat it for Friendsgiving and it was a disaster because it took FOREVER to reheat and got kind of dried out. I think it’s one I need to try again when I can make it fresh!
Vera says
My husband, twin daughters, and I’s tradition that we started just for us is that Thanksgiving is our Christmas decorating day! We listen to Christmas music and have lots of fun putting up the tree and all our decorations!
This year for our Thanksgving feast we are doing a non traditional meal of Lasagna, Breadsticks, Roasted Squash, and my GG’s Amazing Banana Pudding!
Julie says
I LOVE the idea of breaking out the Christmas decorations on Thanksgiving! So fun!
Leighann says
I tested Brown Eyed Baker’s mashed potatoes over the weekend . I was excited because she gave instructions on how they can be kept warm in the crockpot. They turned out absolutely delicious! They are most definitely on my Thanksgiving menu!

Emily @ Pizza & Pull-Ups says
I love a traditional Thanksgiving, my favorite dish by far is my moms stuffing. It is so good!
Jenn says
Dont know about mashed potatoes, but!, my grandma always made twice baked potatoes and they are amazing!!
Jenn says
Julie says
Totally agree on twice backed potatoes! My mom makes them for Christmas dinner and they’re fabulous!
Beckett @ Birchwood Pie says
The holidays have changed for us since my MIL passed away last year. She always took the lead on meal planning and cooking and now it’s up to the family to make a new tradition. Thanks for the sweet potato casserole recipe, I make one every year but haven’t found the right recipe yet, so I’m excited to try this. My husband (who claims he doens’t cook) came up with our standard mashed potato recipe. For about 2 lbs of potatoes, pour in 4 tablespoons melted butter, mash them, stir in a little milk, add A TON of onion powder and salt, taste, and add additional butter (or sour cream) and seasonings as needed. I love green bean casserole but can’t stand turkey, so thanksgiving is all about the sides for me.
Julie says
I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother-in-law. I am sure the holidays will be hard this year but it sounds like you are really doing an amazing job of trying to carry on her memory. <3 And thank you for sharing your husband's mashed potato recipe -- that honestly sounds right up my alley!!
Maureen @ Maureen Gets Real says
What a fun post idea! My family does the typical Thanksgiving dinner: turkey, mashed potatoes, rolls, cranberry sauce, stuffing and then the veggies will change each year. Since I’m going to my boyfriend’s parents house for Thanksgiving this year I’m excited to see their favorite dishes for the meal!
For mashed potatoes, I just add a bunch of spices when I make them. Recently I’ve been adding oregano, basil, salt and pepper to them. My dad is famous for adding different cheeses to make them creamy which are always a hit!
I highly recommend doing a Turkey Trot every year before Thanksgiving! My family has done it for as long as I can remember, so long that I have memories of being pulled in a wagon for it. After the race, a family friend holds a little breakfast party so it’s a great way to see even more loved ones on the holiday. I’m not going to be with my family this year for Thanksgiving so I signed my boyfriend and I up for a race since I can’t break the tradition!
Karen Regan says
My Mom suggested something other than a turkey one year and I thought my Dad was going to faint at the suggestion. LOL.
Julie says
Haha!!!
Patricia @Sweet and Strong says
Aw so fun, I love hearing about others traditions. Every year I struggle with wanting to try new recipes and sticking with the ones I know we love. I’m so excited this year I’m hosting my whole family at my house for the first time! I usually make a pumpkin cheesecake cake from Sally’s Baking Blog which is amazing, but my mom and I are making apple pie together this year. I still might sneak in another new dessert recipe 😉 Happy Holidays!!!
Jess says
I recommend trying the Yukon gold potatoes for your mashed potatoes. They have way more flavor than other potatoes. Also try sour cream instead of milk. Those are my tricks to add more flavor!
Julie says
I definitely need to try sour cream! It always seems to make everything better!
Christina @ montessoriishmom.com says
Fun! I love family traditions and it’s always interesting to see how they change and blend with marriages. Growing up, we always spent Thanksgiving on my Grandfather’s ranch, which was my absolute favorite. Since he passed away, we do something a little different every year. Last year I hosted since we had a new baby and didn’t want to travel, but this year we’re traveling to see my husband’s family in Wisconsin, which will likely become our annual tradition.
Katy says
My husband and I typically alternate between our parents’ houses for Thanksgiving, but last year we hosted both of our families since it the first year in our house and wanted the memory of the holiday to be extra special. We are traveling this year but loved hosting SO MUCH last year that we decided to host Friendsgiving (thanks to a little inspiration from you!). Oh, and mashed potatoes? In the past, I could take them or leave them (give me all the stuffing, though), but then I made Ina Garten’s recipe for goat cheese mashed potatoes and OHMYWORD. They are easy, flavorful, and can be made ahead up to 3 days! Not the lowest calorie dish, but this is legit worth every single burpee I must do to justify them: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/goat-cheese-mashed-potatoes-3363372 Enjoy 🙂

Hi Julie!
Thanksgiving looks so fun at your house, and am jealous of the large amount of family and friends you have to celebrate it with.

When it comes to Thanksgiving food, do you stick to the same tried-and-true beloved recipes or experiment and try new things every year?
We are traditional when it comes to the food. My mother’s sweet potato casserole and my grandmothers sausage stuffing is the best thing ever! My dad is a corporate chef so we get to try crazy things throughout the year, so this is the one time I can guarantee I get my favorite mashed potatoes and mac n cheese!
Do you always serve turkey or do you also feature another kind of meat? Do you serve a vegetarian Thanksgiving?
We are split down the middle in my family with turkey and ham, so we serve both. We also serve venison for the hunters in the family.
Are there any typical Thanksgiving dishes you cannot stand?
green bean casserole <— gross.
What desserts do you make for Thanksgiving?
My aunt is the dessert maker for Thanksgiving. She makes pumpkin pie, apple pie, and a special chocolate pudding pie for me!
Is your family into special Thanksgiving drinks? Do you have a specific cocktail, punch, sangria or mulled wine recipe you love?
This is one area where we experiment. I usually get on pinterest and see what fun recipes I can find to make. We did an apple-champagne concoction with a apple sugar rim – amazing! There is always wine too!
Do you have any other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving?
We usually all stuff our faces, watch the kids go crazy in the back yard, and watch football!

A tradition for my mom’s side of the family is doing a ladies lunch the day after Thanksgiving. Since our actual Thanksgiving has many kiddos and about 30 adults its always nice to chat with the ladies and catch up. Thanksgiving is actually my favorite holiday, I love that it is about family rather than gift giving.
Melissa says
My traditions are that I always watch the Macy’s parade in the kitchen and have coffee while my mom cooks (and I sing all the show tunes when the broadway people come out.) and my mom always makes me what been call turnips but are actually rutabegas. I started eating them when I read this Molly (American girl book) when I was a kid and I eat them just like Molly did. This whole thing makes me sound like I’m 12 years old and I’m actually 35 ?
Erinn says
This is such a fun post! One of our traditions is gifting the White House ornaments to all the guests who attend the family Thanksgiving. They are so intricate!
We usually have turkey and ham as well as homemade gravy from the turkey drippings! Yum 🙂
Hannah says
My aunt makes the best mashed potatoes- the secret is sour cream AND cream cheese, and then they are baked! So, so good. And I agree yuojon gold are the best to use. Plus don’t over mix the potatoes as that makes them gluey. I believe this is a similar recipe to what my aunt does! https://www.google.com/amp/www.geniuskitchen.com/amp/recipe/mashed-potatoes-with-cream-cheese-137847
I hope y’all have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Melissa says
I’ll have to find the recipe I️ use but crockpot mashed potatoes have been a game changer! I️ always hated having to peel, chop, and boil them at the last minute to keep them from drying out… I’m one of those ocd people who needs the kitchen clean when dinner is served (and it’s nice to be able to hang out with guests instead of being stuck in the kitchen)! They cook in chicken broth and then you add milk, sour cream, seasonings, and I️ think maybe cream cheese as well.
I’ve actually started doing stuffing in the crockpot as well so the only food that really has to be monitored is the turkey! Everything else is in a crockpot or made ahead of time and just heated at the end.
Darby says
Hi Julie! I have found your answer to the mashed potato dilemma. Even if you think you don’t like goat cheese, these are actually the best mashed potatoes in the world. Ina Garten’s recipe so you know you can trust it. Recipe linked below:
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ina-garten/goat-cheese-mashed-potatoes-3363372
I agree I HATE green bean casserole. We NEVER serve it and typically opt for a creamed spinach. Our meal typically consists of the best pumpkin bread ever (my grandmother’s recipe, so just DM me on insta if you want the recipe), cranberry sauce, turkey, cornbread stuffing (I make mine gluten free), regular stuffing, creamed spinach, sweet potato casserole, and blueberry jello mold (it’s not a mold and sounds gross, but basically is just a blueberry jello with a cream cheese icing and chopped pecans. it’s delicious just trust me).
For dessert, we do homemade apple pie and pumpkin pie (we buy it from Costco. there are no knock your socks off good recipes lol)
Nikki says
Julie – do you make the mulled wine in the crockpot rather than the saucepan? I would like to try this recipe!
We have traditional thanksgiving, but also have some Italian dishes (pasta, braciole, etc) too!
Julie says
yes!! crock pot all the way! everything else about the recipe is the same!
Julie says
wait! i actually used maple syrup instead of honey the last time i made it in the crock pot and it was fabulous!
Josie says
Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it’s about family, friends, & food! We keep it traditional in our family, but since I’ve started to host every other year, I’ve introduced a few new dishes. Actually, your glazed carrot recipe is a huge hit in our family so thank you for that! I’m trying out a new dessert this year. It’s a brownie with pecan pie filling on top. So good!
katie says
Such a fun post! I’m going to make the carrots for my family this year! Question.. for the Mulled wine, did you just put it in crockpot instead of stove top simmer? 🙂 I want to make that too!
Julie says
yes!! i follow all of the ingredients but just put it in a crock pot and it works perfectly!
Jessica says
This post has me so excited for next week! Our thanksgiving dinner usually has about 30-40 people, so we have turkey, ham, and lasagna (#italianamerican). I actually don’t really care for mashed potatoes or gravy. I love sweet potatoes, but traditional mashed potatoes just don’t do it for me (blasphemy, I know!!). Growing up, my dad would always stop at a cider mill with us on the way to dinner to get fresh apple cider. He used the same big glass jug every year, and still has it.
Julie says
love the apple cider tradition! yum!
Morgan says
The Charlotte Southpark 8k turkey trot is a really fun one!! I’ve run it the past few years and will be running it again this year! They also offer a 5k option and 1 mile fun run I believe
Morgan says
Love this post!! A few years ago, my Dad and I woke up early and served Thanksgiving dinner at a local church. It was a midday dinner intended for those who didn’t have anywhere to go/anything to eat. It was SO SO humbling and brought a whole new meaning to the day. You’d have to have some help in the kitchen in order to be away for a few hours, but it’s definitely worth it.
Liz says
A few years ago we started wearing PJ’s to my in-laws house on Thanksgiving. It is an awesome tradition because everyone is comfy and cozy and you can eat as much as you want because…elastic!
Julie says
okay now THIS is my kind of tradition!!!
Tera says
Pioneer Woman’s mashed potatoes recipe is very good!! Highly recommended
Katie says
I generally spend Thanksgiving by myself. Work has made it hard to travel home and if I’m picking a holiday to spend alone, I’d rather it be Thanksgiving. I’m actually secretly wishing I can spend the day alone this year and just take the day to rest and recover.
Alyssa says
Thanksgiving is our favorite holiday that we hope to “claim” as hosts eventually but for now my parents have always hosted and living only 45 minutes away, we’ll be making the trip there on Wednesday night and running in my hometown Turkey Trot with our 8 month old in the BOB stroller! I’ll be contributing cranberry sauce, roasted sweet potatoes and butternut squash, and chocolate chip pumpkin bread. My dad and husband are obsessed with Costco’s pumpkin pie so I don’t even bother trying to top it with a pie anymore 🙂
Becky says
I just wanted to pop in and say that I love how you always put so much though into your posts. You probably think it goes unnoticed, but it doesn’t.
As for holiday traditions, I saw a few other people use Thanksgiving to start decorating for Christmas. We typically do that the day after (Black Friday shopping was never my thing).
Hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday!
Pamela says
My favorite tradition growing up every year at Thanksgiving my grandmother would bring both my brother and me a new Christmas ornament (Hallmark always with the year) every year. I really looked forward to that. I continued the tradition of getting one each year after she passed. It is so fun that get them out and look at them each year, all 34 of them and counting!
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
I love hearing about other people’s holiday traditions. We usually have the usual Thanksgiving meal with turkey, cranberry sauce, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. I usually make these really tasty soft pumpkin cookies for dessert. I found the recipe in a Martha Stewart cookbook and they’ve become a tradition since the first year I made them.
Alaina says
This is a fantastic post!
As far as Thanksgiving food goes, there a few classics that I feel are must haves – turkey, mashed potatoes (to make them extra creamy, use Yukon gold potatoes – they don’t absorb as much water during boiling), dressing, and macaroni and cheese, rolls (Hello carbs!) – but I do enjoy mixing it up as well.
We are hosting Friendsgiving this year and instead of green bean casserole, we are doing a cheesy green bean skillet recipe from Delish.com. We’ll also have vegetarian sailsubry steak for our friends with a plant based diet. Other new recipes we are trying are cranberry salsa for an appetizer and Diane’s Famous Pineapple Souffle.
For dessert we are keeping it simple and doing apple pie and ice cream. Pumpkin pie isn’t a favorite in our house so I might also pick up a quart of Andy’s Pumpkin Pie frozen custard for the pumpkin pie lovers that will be attending.
As far as tradition goes, we are starting the Friendsgiving tradition this year and I hope it continues because I love cooking and hosting and there is the additional opportunity to merge our friend circles. As far as family Thanksgiving, we always travel to my boyfriend’s family’s cabin in the woods and have a big bonfire and eat buffet style outside. The property is on top of a hill and overlooks a river. The foliage is beautiful. It’s a very relaxed and boisterous atmosphere.
Hope you guys have a fantastic Thankgiving!
Liz says
I use red bliss for mashed potatoes and keep the skins on after scrubbing them. After theyve boiled i mash them with whole milk and garlic salt and pepper and they come out really good. The skins have health benefits and give the dish some color and dimension. Enjoy your holiday this year!
Jill says
I love mashed potatoes, but I load mine up for flavor. Lots of S&P, garlic, butter and sour cream. You can also add in milk or cheese of your choice for added flavor & creaminess.
Jordyn says
You need to try these mashed potatoes! So easy and so good. I have added garlic (powder) and shredded parmesan cheese for even more flavor.

This is my tried & true cranberry sauce recipe. I leave out the cinnamon & ginger. It’s amazing! http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/cranberry-apple-relish
Stephanie says
Every year on Thanksgiving after we’ve eaten, we decorate gingerbread houses. It’s become a little competition with a child pairing together with an adult and everyone using frosting and leftover halloween candy we’ve saved. It’s a lot of fun and the kids really look forward to it!
Ally says
For pumpkin pie, I made the recipe in the Joy of Cooking cookbook last year and it was fantastic. But if I’m being honest, the Pecan Pie recipe (also from Joy of Cooking) took the cake (er, pie?)!
Brittany Taylor says
When it comes to Thanksgiving food, do you stick to the same tried-and-true beloved recipes or experiment and try new things every year?
We definitely have our go to’s – ham, turkey, my mom’s stuffing, pumpkin pie, chicken broccoli casserole! I am going to try my hand at the stuffing this year as my parent’s are going out of town so it’ll just be our family and my husband’s family. I also always boil the turkey after we eat and make turkey pot pies that night!
Do you always serve turkey or do you also feature another kind of meat? Do you serve a vegetarian Thanksgiving?
We serve turkey and ham! I’m not a huge turkey person. I like it but ham is my favorite.
Are there any typical Thanksgiving dishes you cannot stand?
I can’t think of any but if my husband’s grandparents come over for either Christmas or Thanksgiving they always bring shrimp melanton (spelling?). I can’t stand to even look at it much less eat it!
What desserts do you make for Thanksgiving?
Usually pumpkin pie but not everyone like pumpkin in my family (gasp!). So I am actually trying to come up with something. Maybe banana pudding?
Is your family into special Thanksgiving drinks? Do you have a specific cocktail, punch, sangria or mulled wine recipe you love?
Wine for me! And beer for the guys.
Do you have any other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving?
We don’t have a ton either. We always do the week before Thanksgiving our church Thanksgiving dinner where we have communion and a potluck after. Actually doing that tonight! I am thinking this year, doing a Thanksgiving craft for things we are thankful for. Going to scour Pintrist. My youngest is too small for this but my oldest is 6 so she can definitely come up with some things!
Emily says
I don’t have an exact recipe (it’s more of a taste/texture test of sorts), but my go to mashed potato recipe, that also reheats well is as follows.
After you cook and begin to mash the potatoes, add some butter (good quality butter, Kerrygold, something with flavor), chicken stock or broth, greek yogurt (whole fat or 2% Fage is my go too), salt and pepper.
Mash, stir, and add any more of the ingredients to taste!
Rachel says
I’m first generation American, so my Thanksgivings have always been a bit different, to say the least. We do some of the regular Thanksgiving traditions, so we have a turkey every year, along with stuffing and mashed potatoes. But we also have some very different dishes, like beef tongue and blinis with caviar. Doesn’t sound super appetizing, but it’s all really yummy!!
Stephanie says
I often read your blog but don’t usually comment.
Mashed potatoes is one of my favorites to have over the Holidays.
Here is the one that works for me and can be easily reheated if you need to make ahead.

Happy Thanksgiving Julie!
Kathy says
When it comes to Thanksgiving food, do you stick to the same tried-and-true beloved recipes or experiment and try new things every year?
We always go to my Aunts, so we always have the same tried and true recipes. When my husband and I have our own Thanksgiving or bring over side dishes, we’ll make new sides, but stick to the traditional core (Turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing)
Do you always serve turkey or do you also feature another kind of meat? Do you serve a vegetarian Thanksgiving?
Always Turkey!! I’m not sure my mom would know what to do for a vegetarian Thanksgiving!
Are there any typical Thanksgiving dishes you cannot stand?
I don’t like Stuffing or cranberry sauce
What desserts do you make for Thanksgiving?
My grandparents always make pumpkin pie!
Do you have any other traditions surrounding Thanksgiving?
Ben and I always run the Turkey Trot near my parent’s house every year!
As for green bean casserole, I typically don’t like it either, but we modified Ben’s mom’s recipe and I love it now! You should think about giving it a try!
1 can French cut green beans – drained
1 can corn – drained
1 can cream of chicken
½ cup plain yogurt
¼ cup chopped onion – I use the dried onions
½ cup grated cheddar – I don’t eat cheese, so we sub this out
Topping
½ cup butter – I use less so it is not so greasy
1 roll Ritz crackers
Spray pan with cooking spray
Mix together all ingredients (except topping) and put in 9×13 pan
Melt butter in microwave
Crush crackers – I put in baggie and use rolling pin to crush them
Add crackers to melted butter and sprinkle on top
Bake 350 for 30 minutes
Also to make this serve more people sometime I add 2 cans of the vegetables, but I do not double the other ingredients.
Enjoy!

I love this post! Our Thanksgivings the past couple of years have been different than the ones I grew up with. In the past we would see both sides of the family in one day. Both aunts mostly stuck to traditional food, but my Aunt Mary would often add a few new recipes, too. The past two years I’ve been with my in-laws for Thanksgiving. Last year my father-in-law made Beef Wellington instead of turkey and it was so good! My in-laws have a tradition of going for a family walk either before or after dinner. We love it! They live in western Massachusetts so it’s always a beautiful walk. This year we’re doing a family trip to Mexico for Thanksgiving. My brother-in-law has hired a private chef to make Thanksgiving dinner but I have no idea if it will be traditional or not. I’m looking forward to it!
Jenny says
Oh & I forgot to add that my work is having a Thanksgiving potluck on Friday & I’ll be making your glazed carrot recipe!
