I know a bunch of you are Pinterest fanatics like I am and pin different images to one of your 20 Pinterest boards like there’s no tomorrow. If you’re anything like me, you rarely reference a solid 80 percent of your Pinterest boards.
I have 39 images saved to my Pinterest “Hair” board. Every time I pin a cute hairstyle, I think, “I’ll try that really soon. Probably tomorrow.”
Can you guess how many of my pinned hairstyles I’ve attempted? None.
With our big vacation right around the corner, I know I’ll be wearing my hair up a lot and figured I could turn a boring ponytail or messy bun into a cute ‘do with the help of Pinterest. I played around with my hair a little yesterday and my success was rather limited. I have the world’s thinnest hair, so many of the styles that looked beautiful and romantic on the lovely ladies of Pinterest ended up looking flat and pathetic in my hair.
And then I saw a tutorial for the famous sock bun pop up on Gina’s blog and gave it a shot.
Instant success!
I was shocked at how easy it was to do. I ended up watching a YouTube video tutorial before attempting the sock bun which also helped and couldn’t believe how well it worked in my thin hair.
I still need to figure out a way for it to look cute from the front because my gigantic cowlick makes the whole slicked-back hair thang look silly on me, but I am a fan. I think a low sock bun could be really cute for a casual day date and will be bringing my trusty sock with me on vacation.
Workout
Today’s workout was probably the last solid workout I’ll be doing for a few days.
Working out just ain’t gonna happen during my friend Leah’s bachelorette party this weekend and while I hope to sneak in a few workouts while we’re in Hawaii, Ryan and I have a pretty laid back approach to fitness on vacation. I’d love to go for a run on the beach and complete a few circuit workouts, but my priority will be on exploring, relaxing and enjoying our vacation. That being said, if any of you have a great “travel workout” you’d like to share, please feel free to do so in the comments section of this post. Perhaps one of your workouts will intrigue me and motivate me to sneak in a morning workout before we head out for the day!
As for the bachelorette party fun, a few of you have asked whether or not my girlfriends and I are still planning on going to New Orleans to celebrate tomorrow after all of the issues with Hurricane Isaac in the area.
I’ll let the bride-to-be’s Facebook status answer that question for you:
Breakfast
When I arrived home from the gym this morning, I knew we had a lot of veggies and an opened package of apple chicken sausage needed to be used up before we leave on vacation.
I made myself a bowl of scrambled eggs with leftover broccoli, cauliflower, yellow squash and chicken sausage.
I really wasn’t feeling this breakfast, to be totally honest. I think I didn’t want it because I felt like I had to eat the veggies and chicken sausage so they wouldn’t go bad while we’re away. I still ate every last bite, but would’ve preferred a bowl of overnight oats or something sweet. At least it was nutritious and will keep me full for a while!
The banana I ate on the side also gave me that little pop of sweetness that I was craving.
Question of the Morning
- If you’re on Pinterest, how often do you attempt the recipes, workouts, hair styles or craft projects that you pin?
The Pinterest board I use the most is definitely my Fitness board. It provides me with workout ideas and inspiration when I’m feeling less-than-motivated at the gym. I also pin a ton of food, craft ideas and hair photos but don’t seem to reference those nearly as often.
Nicole @ Simply Nicole says
There are days when I go pin-happy and others when I don’t. I have SO many pins on my food board that I haven’t gotten around to trying yet. I always just say, “next time I go to the super market I’m going to get the ingredients!” And then I always forget!
Lyndsi says
Most of the recipes I use come from Pinterest. Love it, but it can be overwhelming because there are so many!
Elaine says
Your sock bun looks great!! I’ve been meaning to try that. But, like you said, I pinned it and forgot about it. Thanks for the reminder 😉 One pin board I never neglect or forget about are my recipes boards. Those boards are where I get all of my inspiration of what to cook/bake each week. I love finding and trying new recipes, so Pinterest has been amazing for that!
Heather @ Run Eat Play says
Love the sock bun – my hair is too fine to attempt it 🙁
I have made a few things on Pinterest – mostly recipes – and they’ve came out good. I also love the craft ideas for the Holidays!
Love your friend’s facebook status!
Dana says
yes, exactly! this is such a funny question. i once joked to the wife of a friend that we should have a party where we make all the desserts we pin, and she answered, “you actually make them?”. While I do make recipes, post recipes i already know i love, and do workouts, to echo above, i must admit that almost EVERY hair idea is meant for someone with long, thick hair. It’s as if you need that exact hair to go along with the style! Which is particularly cruel with the sock bun – which is intended to make your hair look fuller and yet you need hair thick enough to cover the sock….
Lexie says
It’s funny you say you need long, thick hair. I have the thickest hair and always think you need hair that is not as thick to make this work 🙂 But, that is probably just because I am the absolute worst at doing anything to my hair beside a regular pony!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I’ve attempted one or two recipes, but that’s about it. It’s pitiful! Thank goodness I don’t use it all that much. ha
Parita says
This is an amazing workout you can do anywhere in under 30 minutes – http://www.menshealth.com/deltafit/unbelievable-4-minute-cardio-workout.
My new favorite!

oooh thanks!!

Adorable sock bun! I haven’t tried to master that one myself, but my hair doesn’t look great slicked back either. He’a fun on your upcoming trips! I’m headed to Chicago this weekend to visit friends from college. So freaking excited!!
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud! says
the biggest thing i use pinterest for is recipes, and i have probably attempted about 60% of the ones I’ve pinned (or they have at least been some sort of inspiration for me!)
after your post on facebook last night of your bun you inspired me to try it and i ended up watching a youtube tutorial too and it was a major fail for me!! Im not good at the rolling part… I ended up having to have my boyfriend do it for me HAHA!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
That sock bun looks cute! I’ve been wanting to browse pinterest for hair ideas. I have a wedding that I’m a bridesmaid in next month and a wedding to attend in October. I’d like to save money by doing my hair cute myself. 🙂 I’ll check it out.
Lindsey says
A few months ago I attempted quite a few DIY projects and recipes off of Pinterest, but this summer I have not done too much off it besides a few recipes. Hoepfully with fall I will get back to it!
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
love the sock bun, its the only “fancy” do I can do with my hair. I mostly do the fitness things I pin, I am going to a party this weekend and said I would bring a desert determined to make something I have on my food board!
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Hahaha I love Leah’s status!!! She sounds like a fun friend. And no, I’m pretty sure I’ve done zero things from my pinterest boards other than workouts I see on blogs and pin to it!
Julie @ There and Back Again says
You get major points for actually attempting a Pinterest hairstyle… I have the same habit of “pin now, forget later”. Oops! A friend and I have decided to start a self-imposed challenge of trying one project/recipe/whatever from our Pinterest boards each month. That shouldn’t be too overwhelming, and it’ll be fun to check in with each other and see how things turn out!
Hillary says
I definitely use my fitness and food boards on Pinterest quite a bit, but I haven’t used my home or wedding boards at all yet—probably because I am not a homeowner, nor am I planning a wedding! Haha.
Lacey @ familyfitnessandfoodery says
I made the recipes and do the hair styles pretty often actually, but I never (I mean NEVER) do any of the awesome crafts. It doesn’t even have to do with time constraints . . . I just don’t ever make myself do it. None of my toilet paper rolls, aluminum cans, or mason jars have met their crafting destinies 🙁
Kim says
CrossFit is actually a great resource for finding vacation workouts.

Laura says
I actually check pinterest whenever I need to think of a new recipe for something. Also, since I’ve noticed that when I shop online I tend to get random things that really don’t work with anything else I own, I’ll go to my “clothes wish list” page first and get some ideas of outfits to look for. But yeah, I rarely ever use it for anything else, but am SUPER addicted!
Kimberley says
I use a ‘bun ring’ to create the bun effect!
Found here – http://www.hairsupermarket.com/p/4548
Really easy to use and looks fabulous!
Leanne says
For making it look cute from the front, I’d say start with a messy pony as opposed to a neat one. I cannot tease my hair for the life of me, I just kinda mess it up and “fluff” it up with my fingers. Once you have a pony you like, then you’re good!
Chelsie @ Balance, Not Scale says
I have really, really thin hair too, so this might just be the ‘do I’m looking for!! I usually just pull it back in a braid …
As for the travel workout — any kind of agility moves down the beach shortly after sunrise … nothing else can make you appreciate nature quite so much! 🙂
Beks says
I use the nail polish pins and recipes. I keep pinning workouts to do at the gym, but then I never actually do them. Maybe this afternoon. I found a great one I want to try, and I need to get my butt in gear.
As for working out on vacation, since you’re going to Hawaii, I’d say hike and swim as much as possible, since it’s still relaxing, but you’re getting a workout in. And how beautiful is Hawaii? You probably wouldn’t even realize you’re getting a workout. 🙂
Suzanne @ Fit Minded Mom says
I have actually tried lots of things that I have pinned. Recipes, crafts, workouts, ect. Of course, there are MANY that I have and probably never will try but the fantasy is part of the fun!!
Amy says
The only boards I ever actually use are my Recipe board and a few things off my craft/DIY board. I try not to have boards that don’t apply to me….not getting married anytime soon, not having a baby, I don’t own a home etc…so I don’t plan on having boards for all those things that I will actually never use!! I have a hard enough time using the boards that actually pertain to my life 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
The title of this made me smile, and think “oh snap!!” I have a lot of hair styles pinned on Pinterest that I’ve yet to try, but I will admit that I tried really hard to do the waterfall braid!! I failed, but am still trying to get it to look at least somewhat waterfall-esque. I find that the best ones are those that I don’t try to look in the mirror for!
Dana says
hey i go to Tulane Law and school is canceled through at least Tuesday. even though the weather is a bit better there, most of the city is still without power. We were advised not to come back til after labor day. You should check to make sure your hotel/any reservations you may have, have power/AC. Good luck, have fun and be safe if you do go!
Candice says
The sock bun! I have been meaning to try this. I chopped off 8 inches of my hair last december and it is now finally getting long enough to be able to do stuff like this.
Taylor @ Liftingrevolution says
Hair looks super cute As a blonde, I too have the thinnest hair ever, so it’s hard to do these things, it normally takes 100 bobby pins to help.
Here’s a workout designed for doing on the beach! It’s fun, its a circuit and it’s fast. Plus, there will be some moves you prob haven’t seen!
http://www.liftingrevolution.com/a-workout-like-youve-never-seen-before/
It’s from Siesta Key!

awesome. thanks for sharing, taylor!

I can’t do my own hair to save my life – but I did print an updo from Pinterest when I was a bridesmaid!

I LOVE sock buns!!!!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Oh I can certainly relate to what you’re saying here about all of your pinning! I go pin crazy and don’t know the last one I actually referred back to later on. I do use recipes and workouts sometimes, but that’s about it. I love the sock bun in your hair! I have yet to try that one out!
L says
Go paddleboarding or kayaking for a “workout”!
Beckett @ The Birchwood Pie Project says
I found the perfect answer to the vacation workout dilemma in Jamaica a few weeks ago: swimming! Especially in the open water, it’s a tough workout. Enjoy vacay!
Carrie Purchase@ Lift Eat Repeat says
I usually pin hairstyles and DIY stuff. I have made 3 pieces of art for our house, my favorite being a sun mirror made from paint sticks from Lowes! I have long hair so I love to try all the cool braids. Oh, I also try some of the nail designs too- those are hard though! I also pin a TON of outfits I love, but when I click on the sites they are all sooooo expensive!
MANDY says
Maybe wear a cute headband? I love the look too but feel conscious of my forehead…I think it’s too big. Good job 🙂
Michelle @ Eat Move Balance says
I actually use Pinterest quite a bit! I love it, and I’m pretty good about going back and researching whatever I pinned.
I even have a board where I move things to once I’ve tried them (Recipes I’ve Tried and Liked). 🙂
Megan@ The Running Doc says
I love Pinterest, it’s so addicting! The board I’ve used the most is my gluten-free recipes board and the one that’s seen the least action is definitely my craft board. I always have good intentions of getting crafty on the weekends but it just never seems to happen.
Christy H. says
You guys should be in for quite an interesting time this weekend in NOLA. Southern Decadence is going on this weekend and it will be CRAZY in the Quarter. I’m a resident here and can tell you right now that you will have many stories. Many, many stories!
Erin kl says
I’ve attempted some hair pins, mostly braids, and they didn’t go well. I have tried some recipes that worked out well.
I’m glad the hurricane passed, it sounds like it little flooding. I’m sure you’ll have fun on you travels!
Tori says
After seeing your sock bun on Facebook, I tried one last night as well! Pretty sure they will work great for early mornings when I am running late for work 🙂
Your friend Leah’s facebook status made me LOL in my classroom. Sounds like a great time to me!
Suzy says
I’ve tried a few recipes with some success and some failures. I have found the “”not so good for me” recipes often turn out the best lol! My 74 year old father has now discovered Pinterest or “Pinecrest” as he keeps calling it. I showed him the categories and now he’s hooked. He won’t make his own boards, but I heard him on the phone yesterday telling his buddy about all the things he found on this site. I finally had to spell it correctly for him! He “printed” a recipe yesterday and had my mom make it for him. (“printed” means I did it for him and he told my mom he did it)
Dana @ Conscious Kitchen Blog says
Love your sock bun! I’ve been wanting to try one for awhile… and just like you the tutorial is sitting on one of my many Pinterest boards along with those cookies I haven’t baked and the craft I didn’t DIY.
joelle @ on a pink typewriter says
I can’t wait for my hair to be long enough to try the sock bun – it’s so cute!
Christen says
I do the same thing with the hairstyles. I actually tried one for a wedding i went to last sat… it looked ok but it definitely looked better in the picture.
I try more of the recipes, but still not as many as i pin. Maybe someday!!
Yellow Haired Girl says
I don’t use 95% of my pins. So obsessed with pinning. Must. Pin. Them. All!
And I love the sock bun! I have a crazy cowlick in the front too, so I end up leaving my bangs down. But it’s such an easy ‘do 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
pin ALL THE THINGS!!!!
Kasi says
I attempt recipes weekly and projects nearly monthly. My boyfriend often teases me because of my obsession, but he unknowingly compliments a PInterest meal or project. In fact, last night, he raved about a cucumber salad I made. When I told him here I found the recipe he said, “Man, I keep praising your for pinning!”
Jessica Styers says
I have the same problem when it comes to hair. My hair is very thin and I can do very little with it. I have tried the sock bun before but it never turned out right for…I am glad it turned out great for you. My go-to hair is the ballerina bun or a side pony tail or side pony tail.
I have been to Hawaii 2 times and when it comes to working out there …it is actually really easy. There are so many fun activities to do outside that are a great workout….going on hikes (try the sunrise hike), surfing (it is so exhausting and exhilarating), also just running along the beach is fun because the weather is perfect there almost everyday. I hope this helps and HAVE FUN!
Angela @ Health's Angel says
I went Pin-crazy last night and in the midst of it all, I realized that I’ve forgotten about 98% of the pins I already had on my boards. Oooops. I need to get cracking on that! My favorite pins are clothing ones, but I can never seem to afford/find anywhere to buy the items I pin!
I may just have to give in to this sock bun craze and try it out…
Jenica says
I actually attempt the recipes I pin fairly often! I use it when I’m coming up empty on what I should cook or bake. It’s instant inspiration!
Rachel says
haha I pin everything, but have yet to try one LOL I loooove pinning recipes 😀 and how-to stuff like crafts
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
I love pinterest too! Whenever I pin things though I usually forget about them! I loveeeee the sock bun though, super cute!
