Good morning! I hope everyone had a great weekend!
I was fully immersed in family fun and loved every minute of it.
Last night, Ryan and I watched an episode of Modern Family where the whole Dunphy family unplugs and steps away from cell phones and computers. With the exception of publishing two blog posts, I felt completely unplugged this weekend and it was glorious.
But now it’s time to plug back in. Hello, Monday!
Workout
I tackled the 100 squat challenge at the gym again bright and early this morning, but increased by weight to 85 pounds (total). I had to break up the 100 squats into one set of 60, followed by one set of 30 and a final set of 10.
My legs were burning and I hope I can walk tomorrow and don’t end up looking like this dog:
(Fast forward to 0:30. I love the guy’s laugh!)
I rounded out my leg workout by completing three sets of 15 repetitions of one-legged leg press, deadlifts and lunges before doing some ab work. It was a fast but effective workout!
Breakfast
Today’s breakfast was peanut buttery!
I microwaved 3/4 cup of oatmeal with about one cup of 2 percent milk until the oats were soft and the milk was basically soaked up.
I then added a big spoonful of peanut butter – the key to deliciousness!
I love when the peanut butter starts to melt and I can swirl it into the oats. Mmm.
The Chipmunks
This morning as I was typing up this blog post, I was blaring my favorite Pandora station.
“Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las came on and though I love this song, I cannot help but think of The Chipmunks version of the song whenever I hear it.
“Betty, is that Alvin’s ring you’re wearing?”
Classic.
I had one of The Chipmunks’ tapes when I was younger and still associate their high pitched voices with several classic songs, including:
- “Beat It” by Michael Jackson
- “Express Yourself” by Madonna
- “Wooly Bully” by Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
Did you know that The Chipmunks actually had a number one song on the Billboard charts in the United States at one time? "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late)" (aka the song where Alvin sings “Me, I want a huuuuula hoop!”) reached the number one spot in 1958.
Random facts you never needed to know, brought to you by Peanut Butter Fingers.
Question of the Morning
- Did you ever listen to The Chipmunks? Do you associate any popular songs with their squeaky little voices?
Sam @ Sam Bock Illustration & Design says
I had the same cassette!! I always think of Beat It and Wooly Bully as Chipmunk songs. We have a hilariously awful home video of my little sister and I in dance costumes frolicking around the living room to that very tape…to the song, “We’re the Chipmunks! C-H-I-P-M-U-N-K…..we’re the Chipmunks! Gua-ran-teed to brighten your day!”
Fiona @ Get Fit Fiona says
One winter we bought our dog little booties cause it’s so cold and snowy here. He wore them for exactly one walk cause he was so distracted by them and walked just like the dog in the video.
Meg says
Haha! I love that video. Oh the things we do to our dogs for our entertainment. I had the Chipmunks Christmas tape and a cd and my brother and I would listen to it for HOURS. My poor mom.
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I remember playing that Chipmunk christmas song on our family RECORD PLAYER over and over again… I love the huuuuula hoop part too! 🙂
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Hahaha I only listened to the Christmas songs by the Chipmunks 🙂
Laura (LunaChickRuns) says
Ha! Our Christmas tradition used to be listening to the Chipmunks holiday album while decorating the Christmas tree. Thinking back their songs were so annoying! 🙂
Nicole @ Giraffelegs says
hahah I love the Chipmunks christmas song!! My mom hates every time it comes on the radio, but I just can’t resist!
Chelsa says
Yum! I’ve been avoiding buying pb because I can’t control myself with it. Seeing that big blob made me want some so badly!!!!
Catriona says
My sister and I LOVE that song and would always sing along when it came on the radio in the morning while we were eating bfast before school 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
I had breakfast an hour ago and that oatmeal is making me hungry already! I also had a chipmunks movie that I LOVED when I was younger (and still do!) it’s the one where they travel around the world in hot air balloons. Lol now I want to watch it!
Amanda says
I never really got into the chipmunks, but I’m OBSESSED with Modern Family. Best show ever!
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
That scoop of pb looks like it would hit the spot right about now!
I used to love the Chipmunks cartoon! And, obivously, I have their Christmas song on my holiday playlist. 😉
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love when a nut butter melts right into the oats too….mmmmm yummy 🙂
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
I had a big bowl of peanut butter oats this morning too! They were delicious, nothing better then a big blob of melty peanut butter in the middle of your oatmeal! I listened to the chipmunks when I was younger! I loved them!
ELIZA says
i have been doing your 100 squats and boy oh boy are they killer. i have been just using the bar. Do you know if its 35 pounds or 45? I cant believe you add weights on top of that! you are a beast 🙂 Ryan must be so proud!
peanutbutterfingers says
our bar is 45 lbs. i think that’s pretty standard!
Maggie says
My sister and I loved the chipmunks, but we lived in a small town. The only chipmunks tap they had at the store was Country Chipmunks. We listened to it a thousand times. So even now- we still sing out “Mama- don’t let your babies grow up to be cowboys. Chipmunks.”
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
okay, Christmas is not Christmas without the hula hoop chipmunk song… for real.
and I literally can’t wait for my marathon to be over so I can start working lower body again… bring ooon the 100 squats! I’ll be sure to report how accurately I imitate that dog the day after, too.
Jemma @ Celery and Cupcakes says
Ha! I used to love the chipmunks growing up!
Christina Marie says
I LOVED the Chipmunks and Chipettes growing up.
My favs were Uptown Girl and the Chipettes Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

MAYBE, at SOME point, those facts MIGHT become very important 😉
nice workout!!

Dude. There’s a “Halloween Party” station on Pandora and it is the JAM. I recommend you listen to it immediately.

I LOVE the Christmas song! Me, I want a huuula hoop. : ) Still waiting for the dang hula hoop. Great, now this song will be stuck in my head all day.
Mila @ loftyappetite says
I didn’t know that the chipmunks did other songs besides the Christmas one! I’m from Poland and growing up I listened to the Smerf version of popular songs! To this day I can’t listen to LaBouche’s “Be my lover” without singing the Polish Smerf version in my head!
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
I loved the Chipmunks as a kid. This is like way crazy since I’m only 33, but I had an actual LP of the Chipmunks that I played on my portable record player (my parents got it for me for xmas one year). I loved listening to them talk and sing. And the Chipmunk chicks were cute too!

Hi Julie! I have a question… I’m a big fan of workouts like your 100 squats workout. But I’m just curious what kind of weight you’re using… do you add weights to a weight bar? Or use the bars that already have the weight adjusted? Or just one DB?
I’ve done a similar workout but I always use a DB so I’m actually doing a sumo type squat with the single DB. Let me know! Thanks 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
hi bekah! i use a squat rack and load up a 45 lb. bar with weights, so the TOTAL weight is 85 lbs. (including the weight of the bar).
ML says
Hi Julie!
I had a random question for you: I’m thinking of joining a YMCA, and I’m trying to evaluate their class schedule and see which ones I’d actually use. I’m curious about Body Pump, and I think you used to do it…can you describe it? Is it lifting or cardio or both? Do you get your heart rate up? The general description in the brochure is not very helpful. I’ll ask more questions if/when I take a tour, but just curious about your experience. Would love to hear why you liked it so much. Thank you in advance!
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! i did a whole post about it, which you may find here: https://www.pbfingers.com/2010/04/10/so-what-is-bodypump/
Alaina says
Haha, that Christmas song is a classic. The holidays aren’t complete unless you’ve heard it a billion times. 🙂
Lissy says
their christmas album was my favorite when I was a kid. I looked for their CD for years until I found it at Samgoody or something when I was a teenager. They’re slightly more obnoxious when you’re older.
Erin @ The Grass Skirt says
I was a deranged child and actually wanted to marry Alvin. I’m really embarrassed about that, and I swear that my husband is human. Their Christmas album was my favorite!
Elissa says
Someone please tell me they remember the episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks when they sing “Uptown Girl”. This was one of my favorite songs by the chipmunks, and naturally the Christmas song too!

Whitney says
I loved the Alvin and the Chipmunks growing up and their Christmas song still a must play during the holidays – the song would drive my mom nuts.
Jaime says
Every year at Christmas time, I listened (or blasted) my 2 Christmas Chimpmunks cassette tapes (yes, I said cassette tapes) as I decorated the tree with my parents. I did this up until I left for college…when they finally redid them on CD’s for my listening pleasure. There’s no messing with tradition…right?!
Elisabeth says
I love The Chipmunk Song! It’s one of my favorites to blast out at the holidays…and try to sing the high parts with… 😉
Di says
I LOVE the Chipmunks. I haven’t read through all of the comments to see if anyone else mentioned it…but…
…you MUST see The Chipmunk Adventure, if you haven’t. I have absolutely no clue where you’d find it, maybe Netflix or something, but it’s a fantastic movie (as fantastic as ’80s cartoon movies can be, anyway). Feel free to think I’m nuts for suggesting you watch it. 😉
Kanoe says
I used to love the Chipmunks! Oh the memories! Alvin, Simon, Theodore LOL!! Their music was so funny and cute. Love it!
Yolie @ Practising Wellness says
Aaah, I loved the chipmunks! I remember that hula hoop song being featured in the final Look Who’s Talking movie…”me I want a hula hoop”! 😀
Loving those 100 squats – I throw them in at the beginning or end of all my weights workouts, and feel they’ve really toned my tush – yay, lol! 😉
That bowl of oatmeal looks AMAZING! <3 Must recreate. 😛 xyx
