When Ryan and I first started dating he had long, shaggy, blonde hair.
I typically gravitate toward brunette guys, so I was actually surprised to find myself very attracted to a blonde boy! Apparently my brunette preference held true, because under that mop of blonde was a brunette just dying to get out!
When Ryan had his blonde hair, people would tell us that we looked alike all the time. Because that’s not a creepy thing to hear…
Ryan’s grandmother had an ongoing offer to pay Ryan $100 if he chopped off his long hair. One day he surprised all of us and showed up at my parents’ house with a buzzed head without telling anyone what he was doing!
I loved it!
Apparently he wasn’t yet ready to part with his long, wavy locks, because before we knew it he had a head full of thick, brown hair.
Now he keeps his hair nice and short and simple.
I find it oddly amusing that Ryan’s hair has seen more changes than mine. I’ve never dyed my hair and it’s been long and super thin my whole life.
Dinner
Dinner tonight was quite simple thanks to freezer food.
I have a lot of packing to do tonight because I leave for New York tomorrow, so I wanted a quick and easy dinner.
A few weeks ago I received a package of Crazy Cuizine authentic Asian dishes. I immediately put them into the freezer and forgot about them until tonight when I had an intense craving for Chinese food.
I followed the package directions and heated the General Tso’s chicken in a bit of canola oil on the stove top before adding fresh broccoli and the zesty ginger sauce packet to the hot chicken.
It was so, so good. Ryan and I couldn’t get over how much it tasted like takeout Chinese food. By nature General Tso’s chicken isn’t exactly healthy, but at least this dish was high in protein and free of preservatives and trans-fats.
I also ended up cutting up an apple to eat on the side because I wanted something sweet, nutritious and crunchy. Great meal!
Question of the Evening
- Have you ever sported any horrific hairstyles? Please share!
Mallory @ Have your cake And Eat It says
that’s so funny how blonde his hair used to be! ive never sported awful hairstyles, but i actually was bald up until age 3. my mom quite literally TAPED bows to my head so people wouldnt think i was a boy!
Kelly says
Oh my goodness me too!! In all my baby pictures I have NO hair and if not for the girly clothes I could have easily passed for a boy!
Nicole says
My mom taped bows on my head, too! My worst hair “style”…2 words: home perm! Ugh. The chemicals, the smell, my mom pulling my hair and putting it on those rollers I came to find out about 5 years ago that I have naturally curly/wavy hair. Who knew?!
Danica @ GirlsThatRun says
So funny! When my boyfriend and I started dating his hair was down to his shoulders – total surfer look! When he chopped it all off I barely recognized him, but now I love it. And I have a total craving for Chinese food now…
Michelle @ Blogitness says
I’m jealous you’ve never died your hair. I used sun-in when I was about 13. Big mistake…I’ve been dying my hair ever since!
peanutbutterfingers says
every time i’ve thought about dying it, a hair stylist has talked me out of it, saying it’s really hard to get back to a “natural” blonde if i eventually don’t want to dye it any longer!
beth says
you are so right! i was a natural dark blond growing up, but then i used sun-in in high school and then used punky color dyes, and then was a redhead for ten years…and i have NO natural hair color left! really…it’s a blah nothing…so i have to keep coloring my hair, been blond again for a year but going back to red…..i certainly keep my hair stylist in business!
Brittany (healthy slice of life) says
Ryan seriously looks like he is sportin a wig in that first picture! I would have never guessed he’d be the long wavy blond locks type of guy. Which is surprising, because I know him so well and all… Haha 🙂
Meg says
After my sophomore year I dyed my naturally brown hair lighter brown….. that was actually ORANGE…. it was tragic… and very hard to fix hahaha
Lindsay says
Yes!! Right before I started college, my friend – who had a super cute short cut (sign number 1) – took me to her hairstylist to get my hair cut. My hair was pretty long – past my shoulder blades – and I wanted it cut to my shoulders. Instead, the girl cut it to my chin. I started crying in the chair. It was SO bad and it took forever to grow out – so many people can pull off short hair and have it look adorable but I am definitely not one of them!
Meg says
He looks like Val Kilmer! I never noticed it before but he really does, especially with the longer hair. That’s so funny! My hair has been everything from natural blonde to platinum to blue to dark dark brown! I get bored if I stick with the same thing for too long.
Paula @ lipstick and lunges says
Love it! My husband had the same longish poofy hair back in college. It’s short now, but we still get the, you guys look so alike lol.
Stephanie @ LiveCookLove says
Those long locks in the first picture are cracking me up!! You make me want to scrapbook my college years so I can look back at things like this and have a good laugh. Happy packing 🙂
Cristin says
You guys look so adorable in those photos! You should see the progressions of my boyfriend’s beard over the past 5 years… it’s not pretty!
Abby says
Okay mildly off topic but, Not sure if you’ve watched the show Greek that was on abc family a couple years ago (if not you totally should, its great) But Ryan looks so much like Evan from that show.
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
haha too funny. my husband has also undergone quite the hairstyles throughout the years… i’m definitely a fan of the shorter and simple look, which is how he keeps it now. my hair has changed a ton. i’ve dyed it from an auburn to brown to super blonde to natural highlights, which is how it is now. i plan to keep it the natural highlights look for a long time because it’s so much less upkeep. my hair has also been a ton of different lengths, but i know now that i definitely like it longer.
Heather H. @ Run Eat Play says
Those are great pictures – Ryan looks so different with long blond hair. My worst hairstyles were probably in the 80s – teased hair and big bangs!
Melissa @ Will Work for Veggies says
Oh my gosh, once I grew out my hair and dyed it a really light blond… it was the worst thing I ever did! Totally fried my hair and it was SO expensive (my hair is naturally dark and curly). To top it off, I straightened it daily too. What a terrible mistake…
It got so bad that over winter break, I chopped it all off (probably a good 8 inches) and dyed it practically black. Shocked my friends back in high school for sure… but it was my most popular hair style 🙂
Nowadays I dye my hair a dark brown w/ red highlights (it’s very close to my natural color) and I wear my hair curly. It’s never been healthier or easier to manage!
Melissa @ Will Work for Veggies says
By the way, you two are so cute! Also, I can’t believe you haven’t ever dyed your hair! It looks great! A type of blond that my Mom always says “people would kill for”… in a not morbid way! In a “spend their way broke at the salon” way! 🙂
Carolyn says
So happy to see an evening post!!
Have fun in NY – bring a warm jacket =)
Kelly says
I did the boy cut once…it was the craziest thing I have done in a while. I had long hair…it hung past my boobs and I went in and cut it off…like she had to use the buzzers on my neck. It was crazy! I loved it but the in between phase between short and growing back was AWFUL.
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
I haven’t sported any horrific hairstyles, but unfortunately my boyfriend is doing so right now. It is sooo long (probably getting close to Ryan’s in the picture!) and by this point, he’s just doing it because he knows how much I hate it 🙂
Have fun in New York!
Mer says
Speaking of hair, how do you get your ends to curl? Is that rollers or a curling iron? Either way, it’s so pretty!
Life As Wife says
He’s rocking the Pauly D blow out in the brunette pictures!!’
Rachel says
Oh, yes. The week before I left for college I decided to cut my own hair. But all I could think to do was pulling into a ponytail and then cutting off the tail! Obviously, it was beyond horrific. I wore hats for all of Fall Quarter.
Amy says
hah ahhh his hair is awesome! since i was in like, middle school ive been dying my hair like crazy. i get bored with it a lot so i tend to do something drastic. looking back, i prob shouldnt have messed with it so much..oops!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I have wavy hair, and in middle school it was super poofy. well, in 6th grade i cut it just below the chin and my hair looked like a triangle…
Leigh says
Hahaha! Did his grandma end up paying him 100 bucks after he chopped it off? Your husband looks great any way he wears his hair, but I also find it hilarious that he has changed his hair more than you! haha! But there is nothing wrong with loving what you already have! Your hair is beautiful and has no reason to be changed!
Luvv, Leigh B
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! i believe he did get the $100!
Jillian @ Sprinkle Massacre says
I just did a post on Soft Serve Fruit Co in NYC. You should add that to your list of places to eat! 🙂 Well, get dessert – and it’s healthy too!
peanutbutterfingers says
yum! sign me up! 😀
Paula @ Eat: Watch: Run says
I know I’ve said this before, but that picture with the beers, Ryan looks JUST like a young Val Kilmer. Like in the Top Secret/Real Genius days. Crazy!
Oh, and I had a mullet when I was 13. So there’s that.
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Hilarious!! Gotta be honest, Ryan, I don’t love the super long hair in the first picture. But I like all of the other styles haha!
My husband shaves his head, so there isn’t a lot of variety with his hair! 😉
Laura says
Ha! I love your photos looking back! You mention being creeped out when people tell you that you guys look alike, my husband and I get asked if we are brother and sister more often then I would like. Creepy for sure. You guys are such a cute couple!
Alyssa @ Life of bLyss says
sidenote: I have been thinking lately that you’d look awesome with a little longer than shoulder-length/long layers. you don’t hafta listen to me, but it’s truuuueee
peanutbutterfingers says
my hair is so, so stringy. every time i try layers it looks like i’m balding. 🙂
Lindsey says
My hair is so dark brown it’s almost black and I thought it was a good idea to get blonde and caramel colored highlights in college. It was HIDEOUS. It took me forever to get it back to normal. I will never do that again.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
That is quite the evolution! Haha. I like it the way it is now, for sure.
My hair has always been blonde. And straight. And thin. But now it’s gotten a little bit thicker (thank goodness) b/c of my shampoo. And I have had short and long in my lifetime.
Sylvia says
Haha! I truly thought you were about to show us locker posters of Zachery Ty Bryan 😀 A little while ago I was weeding through my old stuff and I found a folder full of all of my old locker posters of JC Chasez from N Sync! Too funny. You guys are adorable btw!
peanutbutterfingers says
hahhaa yesss! from tiger beat. 🙂
Julie says
When I was little, I got a perm at a beauty college. It was intense and the curls were super tight. I looked like Orphan Annie or a lion. It was bad.
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
I can’t wait to her about your New York adventures! I love the city!
Lily says
just stumbled upon your blog-love love LOVE it. and may i just add that you are absolutely stunning?!
peanutbutterfingers says
thank you so much, lily! so glad you found me!
Annie @ Naturally Sweet Recipes says
Haha, this is hilarious!! No funny hair stories with me. I’m like you, I haven’t really done anything extreme and I don’t color it. That chicken sounds awesome! It looks delicious with the broccoli!
Alexi @ alexi 101 says
Love all the different ‘do’s! I think what is even creepier than someone saying you look like your significant other is when someone asks if your brother is your husband! Happens every time me and my brother go out into public. Making it even more ridiculous is that we look like twins. When we were shopping for his new house a few years back we would walk into a furniture store and the sales associate would ask without fail, “Oh! Is this your first place together?” We would look at each other and think “Considering we have lived together for the past 19 years, I’m going to go with no.”
Natalie @ southern fit foodie says
I’ve had long stringy thin hair my whole life…highlights and a few different lengths, but nothing crazy. Although until I was at least three years old, my hair stuck straight OUT (all over, not just up) pretty similar to bozo the clown’s hair…thankfully I outgrew that stage!
Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola says
Oh my gosh, Ryan looks so different in that first picture!! And I’ve had everything from almost blonde to black hair! Now I’m at a Kate Middleton-esque brown which is my fave. Oh man, I def have a hair story. Remember when Jessica Simpson had that curly short bob? Well I went in with super long, straight hair and she surprise me and I came out with that. My bf at the time was devastated and I have to admit, it wasn’t a good look!!
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
You guys are so cute :). People have asked my fiance and I if we’re brother and sister. Kinda weird, but we’re used to it now.
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
Omg I love seeing the progression of Ryan’s hair!! Too funny! People say my boyfriend and I look like each other and I’m like why would you say that?! We don’t want to be related!
Alicia says
Haha I never would have guessed! In hs I had bleach blonde hair (think Marilyn Monroe) with dark underneath. It was um unique. My hair felt like straw though!
Bianca @A Healthy Gourmet Lifestyle says
That was awesome! He looks so funny with long blonde and brown hair. How did his hair color change, did he color it?
Khushboo says
I went through a phase of blonde highlights..sounds ok but in reality, it was a terrible idea! Blonde is not a good look on an Indian..of course I thought I was hot shiz at the time!
Meghan says
Hi Julie!! I love the old school pictures of you and Ryan. Too funny! 🙂 I have a random question for you.. do you typically watch your carb intake on a given day? For example, if a bagel is included in your breakfast, do you shy away from eating 2 more pieces of bread with your lunch/dinner?
peanutbutterfingers says
No I don’t. I really don’t think much about eating or not eating carbs… I just try to eat mostly healthy and center my meals around lean proteins, veggies, fruits and wholesome carbs. Some meals may have more of one and less of another. It’s not really a conscious planning on my part though.
Alexis says
Hope you have a blast in New York! Can’t wait to see pictures. 😉 Ryan’s hair is awesome. Definitely looks better short!
Kate says
You two are still one of the most gorgeous couple’s I’ve ever seen, I must say though I love men with their hair short, back and sides. And don’t worry, I swear my hair is thinner than your’s!!
Linz @ Itz Linz says
Ummm do you remember Sun-In? My sister used to spray an entire BOTTLE in my hair during the summertime. Yikes!
Caitlin says
Have you been taking a break on desserts? I know you don’t write about everything you eat, but haven’t seen you blog much about sweets? Just curious if you have taken a break and if it has been hard?
peanutbutterfingers says
Haha, nope! My sweet tooth is still running rampant. I should probably reel it in a bit. 🙂 I guess I just haven’t posted about sweets since a lot of the time when I eat cookies it’s not at typical mealtimes… usually around 3pm or after dinner. I have intentionally not been baking quite as much because I was the only one eating the end product for the most part. I’d make a batch of cookies for me AND Ryan and he’d eat two while I’d be left eating the rest.
Kim S. says
Ugh totally get that. I love baking, but I hate leaving the baked goods in the house, hate throwing them away, and hate bringing them to work because everyone is trying to lose weight. I’ve been tempted to try some of the mug-cakes on Pinterest, but I’m too scared!
erica says
horrific: sixth grade…late eighties big huge “Wave” hairstyle with your bangs. i cringe. i cringe!
