I bet that blog post title made you think I’ll be talking about some rank smell omitted by the lovely Sadie this morning.
In reality, I’ll be discussing just the opposite.
Really though, she does.
And she’s an expert poser, in case you haven’t noticed. She’s not above nudity.
I know this may sound asinine to many of you out there, but Sadie’s smell is one of my all-time favorite things in the entire world.
Vizslas, as a breed, are highly recommended to those who want a (crazy) dog that doesn’t omit “that doggy smell.” Their coat is very low maintenance and the only time Sadie smells like a stinky dog is after a day at the beach.
(She was cracking me up this morning with those facials!)
Sadie’s coat smells like a mix of comfort, love and home. I breathe her in before bed and in the morning and her smell, coupled with her overzealous cuddling, relaxes me and puts me at ease. It grounds me and forces me to be in the moment and soak up her love.
And if I decide not to be in the moment and love her back, this happens…
Every time. This dog seriously loves to be chest-to-chest and face-to-face.
Needy?
I think so.
Breakfast
After annoying Sadie with my camera this morning, I headed into the kitchen to make breakfast.
Ryan and I slept in until 6:30 a.m. and I plan to use my normal walk time with Sadie to go for a run for today’s workout. The extra 90 minutes of sleep were much appreciated.
My morning meal included another egg, cheese and jelly sandwich, served with a side of tiramisu coffee from The Fresh Market.
The tiramisu coffee flavor was a winner. Of the coffee samples my mom gave me last weekend, so far my favorite is the crème brulee, but the tiramisu is gunning for second place.
Time to take Sadie for a run before it gets too hot outside.
Hope your day is full of good-smelling things!
Question of the Morning
- Do you love the smell of anything unusual?
- Do you enjoy the smell of your pet?
Cait says
im so glad you had this post julie ha! i love the smell of my cat which sounds so crazy to some but she just smells a mixture of everything you described. plus she also loves to be up close and face to face on my chest. those silly furballs.
peanutbutterfingers says
welcome to the pet-obsessed club! 😀
Alyssa @ fit and fun in third says
Hahaha I thought I was such a weirdo for absolutely LOVING the smell of my cats head… So happy I’m not alone! My husband laughs at me because it’s literally my favorite smell ever and I could smell his sweet head all day! I still feel like a weirdo after writing that…
Janet says
this is so timely! i was just telling my husband that my favorite smell is sleeping dog of our crazy pit!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
LOL, sadly I don’t have a pet but I DO enjoy the smell of flavoured coffee! I don’t drink coffee at all any more (I never actually really liked the taste but made myself drink it out of desperation when I was in uni and needed to stay awake and study), but all of these yummy flavours kinda make me crave it again!
Erin says
Awww, I love this! I am totally a smell person. From my cat’s soft fur to my boyfriend’s manly skin scent (when he’s not running!), a familiar smell can mean home to me so much more than just sitting on my couch.
In my theatre classes at university, we often used smells as a way to start off improv scenes- for example, smelling a tube of Chapstick, or a cup of coffee beans, and then making up scenes with the first memory that the scent called up.
Katie @ Katie Moves says
I loveeee the smell of my dogs…i find it comforting too. and no worries my dogs are as needy as Sadie…of course the one is 75 pounds and wants to be in your lap or in your face haha!
Becca says
I loved this post 🙂 I need to try the tiramisu flavor. Fresh Market really does have great coffee.
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
That breakfast sandwich = so much win!
I love the smell of my parent’s house. Every time I walk in I am immediately comforted by the smell of my childhood!
Lindsey says
I totally agree!! Love the smell of my Gloria 🙂
This is going to sound totally crazy, but just go w/ it for a minute. Have you ever smelled Sadie’s feet? I first did this when I lived at home w/ my parents…their dog’s feet smelled like crackers. And now I always smell dog’s feet (only dogs I know, ha) – and it’s always crackers!
If you think I’m more than nuts, just ignore this.
peanutbutterfingers says
this comment literally cracked me up!!!
Lindsey says
did you smell them?!
Debbie says
Lindsey, I totally agree! I can’t quite figure out the smell, but i like it! Okay, just to make it myself sound even more weird, i also like the smell of my dog’s ears, like the inside of them….hahaha!
Lindsay says
My dog’s feet smell like malt-o-meal. that’s what we say!
Nikki says
I have toatally done this with my friend’s Yellow Lab. My friend and I would play with her and smell her feet because they smelled like Cheetos. lol! I always like they breathe in my kitties’ smells. 🙂
Cassie D. says
You’re not crazy – my husband and I love to sniff our two cats’ paws. We call them “popcorn paws” because for some reason, they smell like popcorn.
Leslie says
Our Ridgeback’s paws smell like popcorn too! He has a very distinct smell, but it’s not a nasty stink. I love the way he smells – he just smells sweet and lovey.
kate says
this is hysterical. my husband and I thought we were the only weirdos obsessed with the way our golden retrievers paws smell. we can never figure what exactly they smell like but always laugh at our guesses.
Georgia says
Oh my gosh. My dog’s feet smell like beautiful, sweet oats!! I love it. This is my first time commenting on pbf though I am an avid reader. All it took was this subject to get me talking, I guess! 🙂 haha.
Kristen @ notsodomesticated says
Aww I love this post! Sadie just seems so sweet. I love the way my mom’s dog, Sophie, smells. She doesn’t smell like a normal, stinky dog. But maybe I’m just biased. 😉
Danica says
That coffee sounds so good! Just looked up The Fresh Market and realized they have one in Sarasota! We are hoping to make our annual trip to Venice, FL next year and we usually take a day drive to Sarasota! Looking forward to getting some of that tasty coffee!
peanutbutterfingers says
if you’re there around the holidays you have to try the peppermint creme! it’s one of my all-time favorites.
Danica says
Do you think you can send me the name brand of the coffee? or is is just made by the store you purchase it at? I’m not sure I have the patience to wait till April to try it out! Thanks!
peanutbutterfingers says
it’s simply fresh market coffee! just made at the store! 🙂
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love the smell of my family dog too. It reminds me of comfort and home. I love that. 🙂
Tiramisu coffee sounds incredible!
Lindsay @ In Sweetness and In Health says
That’s good to know that vizslas don’t have that doggy smell! My family has always had little hypoallergenic dogs that don’t shed so they never smell. But, when Chris and I eventually get a dog I have a feeling he’ll want a bigger one, and a vizsla sounds like a perfect option :). Haha and my dog at home totally likes to spread her legs for the world- and it’s even funnier because her hair is a bit red down there so she displays her fire crotch haha. Hope you have a great day Julie!!
Alexis says
Hahahaha!!!!!!!
Lindsay says
Haha omigosh I LOVE her poses!! My Pomeranian, Chewy poses the same way…he lies on his back with his front two paws bent up by his face and sprawls out his hind legs to give the world a show. Animals just crack me up in the best way possible. And since there’s 3 women in my house (me my mom n sister) our dogs typically smell like the perfume of whoever’s been cuddling with them the most lol
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Well… I have a goldfish so I’ve never tried smelling him. Don’t think he emits any odors though unless I don’t clean his bowl! Haha
Hillary says
I love the smell of my pillow. I’m one of those ridiculous people who feels the need to take my pillow with me on vacation, not so much because I like the feel of it (which I do!), but for the smell of it. Smells like home!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I usually love the smell of my dog too! But right now he smells like this special tick spray we bought for our furniture and bedding – it sucks!
Sarah says
We rescued a German Shorthair Pointer named Susan from the humane society just over a month ago. My husband has never had a dog/pet and I’ve always had them growing up. I tell him I love how she smells, it smells like home, his response is, “she smells like a dog.” Maybe dog is what home smells like to me?
Kendra @ The Rhoton Family says
I love love love the smell of my dog Remington… especially his feet! We call them “Frito Feet” because my husband swears they smells like Frito chips 🙂 Aren’t dogs wonderful 🙂
Heather @ Housewife Glamour says
The only time I notice my dog’s smell is right after a bath – and it’s addicting! We wash him in Oster Oatmeal Naturals and the week following I can’t get enough Roadie smell!
Now if I could just figure out to get it to stay longer… 😉
Andrea says
I seriously thought I was the only freak in the world that loved the smell of their dog!! My dog Lucy also doesn’t have that “dog” smell and I find myself always smelling her head like I would a flower..it is completely comforting!! Sadie actually reminds me a lot of Lucy…both crazy, happy go lucky dogs with a serious need for some ridiculous cuddle sessions!! I told my boyfriend that if we ever have to get another dog, which will never happen because Lucy will live forever, that we should get a Vizslas! I always look forward to your Sadie posts, her facial expressions are hysterical!
peanutbutterfingers says
i’ll fly my freak flag with you! 🙂
Michelle says
I love this post Julie! I love the smell of my dog too, except for his breath these days! He’s getting old and has “ODB”….old dog breath. lol. So this post brought a little tear to my eye 🙂
peanutbutterfingers says
sadie is getting more and more white hairs and it makes me so sad… and she’s only 4! i just call them her “highlights.” 🙂
'Dee @ 'Dee's Garret says
Aw, it’s just a little “frosting” 🙂
Did you know that Belgian Malinois also get “frosting” at a very young age? Some start getting their little grey-beards at age 2!
My 2-year old pup is part Mal and she already has this little bitty grey patch under her bottom lip. I wonder if this is a trait of Viszlas, too?
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
My pup gets the “doggy smell” when she’s due for a bath! 🙂
Kimberly says
Absolutely! I love the smell of my pups too. Dogs are the best.
Nicole says
I love the smell of Zeus! He still has the softest coat and puts up with me nuzzling my whole head into his side. The only time he smells bad is after a day at Camp Bow Wow – he comes home smelling sweaty, probably because he runs around ALL day there.
Kaitlin @4loveofcarrots says
I wish I loved the smell of my dog, unfortunately his breathe is horrendous and you can literally smell it from a mile away, some days it is worse than others. This may sound weird but I notice people’s scents and my boyfriend has a strong one, I love it though it is so comforting to me.
Angela says
Posts like these make me so happy. I <3 my dog. And the way he smells, minus his breath…
Lindsay says
I love the way my silly pitbull smells. He has a short, thin coat, too. I love your Sadie posts. Dogs are the best thing ever. Ever.
Kara says
I have a little Jack-Russell terrier and she too rarely smells bad (until she opens her mouth lol). But I had to laugh when you said that Sadie loves to be face-to-face because Gracie is the same way! If she’s feeling neglected, she’ll crawl up my torso until her nose is right in my face, just like your pic today. I could never live without a dog and it amazes me that some people do!
Ashley says
I love the smell of my horse. It was a comforting smell. He could roll in mud and dirt and get rained on but his smell always remained the same. LOVE!! Also, my shih tzu smells pretty fantastic especially her little head which I always cover in kisses 🙂
Stellina @ My Yogurt Addiction says
I have a puggle whose coat is also short and easy to take care of. The only time he stinks is if he hasn’t been to the groomer in a few months, otherwise he smells just fine!
Chelsa says
My dog doesn’t get that doggy smell either. He’s an American Eskimo. Sometimes I wash him with my Moroccan Oil shampoo and he smells like heaven. Because he is super fluffy his fur sometimes absorbs smells in the air and his breath isn’t the freshest even though I brush his teeth regularly. But no doggy smell thankfully!!
Bethany says
my husband and I say our dalmatian smells like fritos when she sleeps–haha! It sounds awful but it’s such a good smell 🙂 so I know exsactly what you mean!!!
Alexis says
I love the smell of my dog!!!! I get caught breathing her in quite often. Not right after she’s been to the groomer or had a bath, but her natural scent. So good. They should make a perfume out of it. Lol.
Katie says
I have a 6 month old Vizsla & I love her smell too 🙂 People think it’s a bit strange because I never complain of her “doggy smell” but I love it! 🙂
Amber @ Busy, Bold, Blessed says
My dog is the same, she’s such an attention whore… if you stop petting her she’ll put her face right in yours. Or lick you… in the mouth lol!
She doesn’t smell very good though… pooch needs a bath!
Mandy says
Hey Julie! How long does it take you to digest a meal before working out?
peanutbutterfingers says
i usually have to wait a solid 1 – 2 hours after eating to workout to prevent cramping.
Laurie @ Love, Laugh, Laurie says
I love this post!! We always say that our dog smells like a baby because he has the cutest little smell that we love! Everyone always thinks we are crazy, but seriously! It’s awesome (he’s a ridge, so I’m assuming he smells similar to sadie)
Amanda @ Click. The Good News says
I love my 2 Vizslas and their low-maintenance coat was one of the reasons why I {heart} the breed. They only smell bad if they roll in something or are *emitting* some odors. 🙂 They are easy to toss in the shower or pool during the summer and dry so quickly.
peanutbutterfingers says
yes! vizslas are some gassy dogs. that’s for sure.
Mrs Type A says
So cute 🙂 Unfortunately our terrier mix (looks like a 35-lb jack russell!) does not smell good. He tends to get that doggy smell!
Alex @ therunwithin says
i wish my dog would stay still, Sadie is a professional poser! I am just loving the face.
peanutbutterfingers says
do you have a camera with an action mode? it’s the ONLY way i can get good pictures of sadie.
Alysia @ Slim Sanity says
now that i think of it…Barkley doesn’t really smell that bad at all 🙂
Meagan @ Managing Meagan says
The smell of fresh cut grass is amazing! I also LOVE the smell of burning leaves/grilling… it reminds me of fall which is my favorite season!
peanutbutterfingers says
i love the smell of burning leaves, too! people in ocala seem to burn leaves a lot so i get to smell it quite often. a small town perk, i guess. 🙂
Lena @Fit on the Rocks says
I love the smell of flowers in bloom, but my allergies, not so much. I actually like the smell of my dog, too. He doesn’t really get stinky unless it’s been forever since he’s gotten a bath. If he starts to really stink, then I know I’m being a bad mama and need to wash him asap.
Andrea @ Andrea Out Loud! says
yes! Everyone always comments on konas coat too and asks about grooming and luckily she is so low maintenance and not stinky at all! She gets a little stinky if she is super hot for a long time but even her wet dog smell after swimming goes away very quickly!
the random thing that i love the smell of is 2 stroke exhaust! from snowmachines, boat motors, dirt bikes, etc. love it!
Theresa says
what a cute post 🙂 i have no idea if this is just a chihuahua thing but as nacho has gotten older..he definitely is more stinkier. i bathe him all the time but it doesnt help, lol. he doesnt smell terrible, just like dog. my sisters chihuahua who is much younger smells so nice in comparison!
Jessy says
I always think my dog smells like taco chips after she has been sleeping. It is my favorite smell in the world, and makes me happy every morning.
Katie @ Soulshine and Sassafras says
Hah, I love that 6:30 am is sleeping in for you 🙂
Michaela says
the smell of a beloved pet is just divine!! I will never forget the lovely smell of my pet 🙂
And happy belated birthday, Julie!! It seems you had an absolute blast- you guys must be such fun to hang out with!
peanutbutterfingers says
thanks so much, michaela!!
Laurie says
I am so glad to know that I am not the only one who loves the smell of my dogs. I love to sniff my Jack Russel’s head every morning and evening, so comforting. My daschund smells sooo good too – he’s needy like Sadie (he even looks like a mini version of her), so I get lots and lots of sniffs of him! Love the blog and especially your Sadie posts!!
peanutbutterfingers says
feel free to email me a pic of your daschund aaaaaanytime. 🙂
