I bet that blog post title made you think I’ll be talking about some rank smell omitted by the lovely Sadie this morning.
In reality, I’ll be discussing just the opposite.
Really though, she does.
And she’s an expert poser, in case you haven’t noticed. She’s not above nudity.
I know this may sound asinine to many of you out there, but Sadie’s smell is one of my all-time favorite things in the entire world.
Vizslas, as a breed, are highly recommended to those who want a (crazy) dog that doesn’t omit “that doggy smell.” Their coat is very low maintenance and the only time Sadie smells like a stinky dog is after a day at the beach.
(She was cracking me up this morning with those facials!)
Sadie’s coat smells like a mix of comfort, love and home. I breathe her in before bed and in the morning and her smell, coupled with her overzealous cuddling, relaxes me and puts me at ease. It grounds me and forces me to be in the moment and soak up her love.
And if I decide not to be in the moment and love her back, this happens…
Every time. This dog seriously loves to be chest-to-chest and face-to-face.
Needy?
I think so.
Breakfast
After annoying Sadie with my camera this morning, I headed into the kitchen to make breakfast.
Ryan and I slept in until 6:30 a.m. and I plan to use my normal walk time with Sadie to go for a run for today’s workout. The extra 90 minutes of sleep were much appreciated.
My morning meal included another egg, cheese and jelly sandwich, served with a side of tiramisu coffee from The Fresh Market.
The tiramisu coffee flavor was a winner. Of the coffee samples my mom gave me last weekend, so far my favorite is the crème brulee, but the tiramisu is gunning for second place.
Time to take Sadie for a run before it gets too hot outside.
Hope your day is full of good-smelling things!
Question of the Morning
- Do you love the smell of anything unusual?
- Do you enjoy the smell of your pet?
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Is this where we’d say “mommy of the year”? 😉
peanutbutterfingers says
Mommy 2012!
Cate says
Julie, you should get a Keurig!!! you would love it!!
peanutbutterfingers says
i have one! i use that little pod where you can add your own coffee grounds. 🙂 it’s great!
Tressa says
Oh good I’m not the only one who loves smelling their dog! I think that my dog’s paws’ smells like cool ranch doritos especially when she sleeps. I inhale her aroma every day and I don’t care if people think I’m weird but it brings me comfort and joy :).
peanutbutterfingers says
HA!!
Lauren says
My golden retriever had a personal scent of corn chips. It sounds really strange, but I enjoyed his smell.
lindsay says
I love the smell of my dog Lottie, usually. Typically, her “need a bath” smell is something like popcorn. No joke – the dog smells like popcorn at her worst. That is not too bad 🙂
Melissa @ SquatsandSquash says
this only makes my longing for a dog even WORSE!!! lol. I’ve been married for 5 months and it has been my MISSION to get my hubby on board for getting a dog. it’s ridiculous how stubborn he is…maybe ill just show him this post to help sway him. sigh.
Meg says
Haha! I love the way our golden retriever smells too! He rarely gets stinky, unless he’s been swimming in the river/lake (no beaches in idaho!). On the other hand, our German shepherd puppy is the stinkiest! Oh well, we still love him.
krystal@coffeecardiogoddess says
Sometimes my dogs smell ok. But most days unfortunately they are just stinky little dachshunds. Sadie is sooo precious looking in those pics.
Jill @ Jill is Active says
I love the smell of permanent markers and gas – is that weird? Have obviously not TOO much though, I’m not a druggy!!
I absolutely LOVE the smell of my puppy too! She’s a West Highland Terrier/Poodle mix and she smells heavenly!! I actually don’t like after she’s just been bathed because you just smell the shampoo. Her natural smell is so comforting 🙂
Faith @ For the Health of It says
Haley isn’t a smelly dog (she’s Catahoula/cattledog) but her ears are always RANK! I never understand that – its not like she gets water in them!
She’s also a ridiculously needy pup. I’ve never met one who was more into spooning or laying on top of me than Haley!
Renee @ Bendiful says
I’ve never met a good smelling dog mine were always stinky! I saw on my itinerary for FitBlogNYC that you are speaking! I’ve been reading your blog for a while now I can’t wait to meet you IRL.
Charlie (the runner beans) says
I find the smell of really horses comforting, and the smell just before it rains! Oh and lots of other more normal things like chocolate chip cookies yum!
Annie says
I love the way my dog’s feet smell! My husband thinks it’s super creepy that I sniff our dog’s paws, but I don’t care. 🙂
Yellow Haired Girl says
Hahaha. You’re not alone on the dog smelling. I love the smell of my parent’s dog. Makes snuggling up with her even better!
Lindsay says
I totally know what you mean! I have a dalmatian and they are the same way, no “dog” smell. I rarely have to bathe her and her smell is one of my all-time favorites.
NIcole says
I love this- that smell of love, comfort, and home are all in my pup’s scent too 🙂 I can’t get enough of him it’s insane! He’s a lover as well as sadie!
Jess says
I totally know what you mean. While I don’t think either of my dogs has a “dog” smell, the vizsla is definitely the better smelling of the two. It takes some swimming or a couple of days in a row of the park to get him smelling “doggy”. Even more weird, I think he smells like syrup lol. And he definitely has frito paws too! In fact, both of my dogs do! Love that smell 🙂
Tiffany says
I love love love my frenchie’s smell. He still has the puppy smell thrown in there so it is extra delicious. It’s my crack. I also don’t mind his morning breathe 🙂
It takes a dog owner to appreciate 🙂
Ruthie Hart says
so weird but my husband loves the smell of our frenchie’s paws….he is such a cuddle bug and I always see Jon *my husband) sniffing his paws and smiling! I think they smell like concrete haha. But I do love the smell of Ernie (our frenchie). I was sad when he lost the puppy smell, he is 18 months now, but I still love his smell!
Ashley @ Sweat for Sweets says
Hahaha I love how all the pet “crazies” are coming out of the wood work! 😉
I, too, love the smell of my doggie after she comes in from outside. Very specific 😉
Kendra says
I completely agree!! I have 2 dogs and I always say they smell like a blankie. You know like when a toddler has a favorite blanket and they walk around with it up against their nose, and they borrow their faces in it at night to smell it? That’s how I feel about my dogs! They are my security blanket through and through 🙂
Vicki says
Apparently I’m not the only one who thinks my dog’s feet smell like chips! So weird but so comforting. Love the pictures of Sadie and love your blog! Inspiring and positive, it’s great 🙂
Alysha @Shesontherun says
I have a beagle shepherd and he actually smells really good! Especially when he’s lying all curled up. His breath kinda stinks when he yawns, but that’s about it!
Lindsay says
I love the smell of my vizsla Brooklyn, and love that we barely have to give her baths! She is also very needy like Sadie! She keeps sneaking into the bathroom while I’m in the shower! She patiently waits for me on the bathmat! She is definitely a “velcro” dog!
Megan says
We have a Vizsla too! I love her smell; we call her “Cheeto toes” because we think they smell like Cheetos! I love seeing Sadie in your posts!
Angela @ Health, Happiness & Harmony says
I had a hard time getting out of bed with my pup this morning! We had terrible storms overnight and even when I tried making the bed she wouldn’t come out from under the covers she was so scared!
Made an avocado pudding, and would love your thoughts on it after you made your awesome mousse. Just posted the recipe this morning. Thanks Julie! )
Ashley says
My husband and I have always joked about our dog’s feet smelling like fritos also! Glad to know we aren’t the only crazy ones. Her smell always comforts me especially if I’m having a bad day.
I actually wonder if Elly (our dog who we adopted from a humane society) is part vizsla because while her coloring isn’t the same as a vizsla, the body shape/size is extremely similar. Plus she’s super energetic and definitely a velcro dog. We saw another dog at Petsmart who was almost her twin, and the Petsmart people knew the dog was a vizsla mix but weren’t sure which other breeds were in the cocktail.
Jodi @ I Run for Food and Wine says
I know what you mean…the smell of my cat in the morning is a normal thing. He lays on me and licks me in the morning, but his fur smells slightly sweet. This makes me sound crazy, haha, but he’s me needy child.
April says
my golden retriever smells like wet dog (only bc it she was just out in the rain) which sounds gross but I find it so adorable.. her feet smell like chips too though so weird
Abby @ Change of Pace says
I knew exactly what the title of the post meant! I LOVE the smell of Harold, my dog. I can breath in his chest and paws all day!
My husband and I often say we need to find a way to bottle the scent!
Elizabeth @ reads recipes runs says
I totally know what you mean! My puppy doesn’t smell like a dog either, just happiness 🙂 except when she has rolled in mud and we have to bathe her… Auroura does the same thing as Sadie and likes to sit on your face, this morning she was chewing on a rawhide and sitting on my lap just wasn’t close enough. She sat on my chest and put the rawhide on my head hahaha.
Annette@FitnessPerks says
Have fun on your run 🙂
Shay @ Whine Less, Breathe More says
The doggy smell is one of the reasons I can’t bring myself to get my girls a dog. I just find it so… put offish? (Is that even a word?!)
Alana says
I love the way my cats smell! Everyone thinks I’m crazy, but it’s just such a comforting scent. I’m always picking them up and smelling their heads =p
Sarah @ RunningChickago says
oh my gosh, tiramisu coffee sounds amazing! does it have a hint of rum to it? i’m not the biggest fan of rum!
Caitlin @ This Bride's Joyride says
I was not expecting you to say Sadie smelled good!
I LOVE the intense chlorine smell of certain Hotel hallways or hotel pools. As a kid my family all got together for Thanksgiving at my aunts and we always stayed in the same very chlorine smelling hotel. We would play hide & seek in the hotel hallways and hang out in the pool in swimmies. Memories 🙂
Lauren says
Aww Sadie, I love her. I have a Vizsla named Bethe and I love her smell too, especially her ears. It is nice to have a dog that does not have that “dog” smell. I will say that Bethe has some pretty bad breath at times, but other then that she is perfect, just like Sadie! 🙂
Michelle says
I feel the same way about my Vizsla! Glad I’m not the only “weirdo” :).
Erin @ Girl Gone Veggie says
My puppies love to be cuddled like that too! Sadie is so cute!
Katy @ HaveYouHurd says
My husband and I both comment ALL THE TIME about how much we love our corgi, Wrigley’s, smell. It’s hard to describe and it’s not the type of smell you’d want to bottle and wear everyday, but I love it and it makes me happy 🙂
Amy says
shes so cute! i want a dog!! i have to say, i love that doggy smell!
Lindsay says
I love the smell of my two yorkie-poos (exept when they come in from outside when it’s really hot…don’t like that “hot dog” smell). I just love to cuddle them and breathe them in too! 🙂
Liza says
This is so dang funny! Everyone saying their dog’s feet smell like chips…… I know what I’m doing to my Yellow Lab first thing when I get home……. SMELLING HER FEET! Will report back.
Gina Matko says
Love the way my cat smells, like home, love, and super cuteness! My very own aromatherapy!
Lizzie says
I seriously laughed out loud at work when I saw the pic of Sadie on top of you! SO freaking funny. I think “Mommy 2012” is working 🙂
Amanda @ Dogs, Chocolate and Fruits & Veggies says
This is probably gross, but I like the smell of my dog’s paws. I would think they would smell horrible with all the crap they step on, but they actually smell kinda earthy!
Lindsey says
Look at all these people who smell their dog’s feet!! You need to do some kind of poll. This is hysterical! The consensus seems to be salty snacks…
Renee says
OMG! Love this post and I totally know what you mean. I have a weimeraner and she seriously makes my heart hurt! I lover her so much!! Her name is Miles, she is a beast on the leash, but never fails to sleep with my sweaty socks post run!
Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana says
That’s so funny that you mentioned this because I love how our dog smells, there’s something so comforting about it. I tell my husband that I love his stinky doggy smell, and he looks at me like I’m crazy 🙂
colleenzo says
I am the QUEEN of weird smells. I love how my American Bulldog smells precisely because he DOES smell ‘doggy’! Our other dogs are greyhounds, and they’re similar to Sadie in that they really don’t have a smell, so when we got Gus, our AB, I was so happy to have that stink around again! Also, I love the smell of horse manure and skunk, but I can’t stand anything flowery or perfumey. I’m all backwards!
